On Saturday, we drove to the Madison Ohio area to sample wines from a few vineyards. Grand River Cellars was our first stop. We love the ambiance here. It's a wooded setting, which offers plenty of shade, and makes outdoor seating so nice. They also have a nice bar area indoors, if that is your preference. The servers are very polite and amiable. Stopped in on a warm Sunday (for March). We had our dog so I specifically called ahead and asked if they were dog friendly. She said yes, and then put me on hold to ask her manager if we could sit on the upper patio since it wasn't very busy. She said they would make an exception, so we drove out from another winery. After finding a table off to the corner (there were only two other tables occupied at the time)- the waitress said we had to move across the "parking lot" to an open gazebo that was clearly not set up for service yet. So we moved, but since we were in nowhere land we decided to just put the dog in the car to enjoy our wine back on the patio. I understand if you are not dog friendly, but I did call ahead and wouldn't have showed up if I knew we weren't going to be sitting within distance to enjoy the atmosphere. As for food - we ordered the artichoke dip and it had about 3/4 cup of dip - the rest was a chunk of bread. Margarita pizza was good. We'd come back again, but bummed how the evening went. read more

I absolutely love everything about this place! The food was really good and very reasonably priced. You get a lot of food. I was particularly excited because they have a gluten free menu, and everything is really good! I know it sounds weird but if you're GF you'll know what I mean. They give you schar table crackers and not those weird seed crackers. I was so impressed! And the gluten free brownie (also vegan) was one of the best brownies I've ever had. Grand River Cellars has one of the most beautiful wineries in Geneva. Sitting on the patio, you almost forget you're in Ohio--it feels like you've stumbled into a hidden spot in the California woods. The trees, the quiet, the fresh air--it's incredibly peaceful and picturesque. We didn't do a wine tasting, but my friends split a bottle of the Pinot, and they couldn't stop raving about it--perfectly dry and smooth. What truly set the vibe was the live music. A ukulele player played softly in the background with the most beautiful voice and playlist. It set the vibe for the evening. Now for the letdown: the food. We were surprised to be served appetizers on paper plates and water in paper cups. It felt like a mismatch for the otherwise elegant, scenic winery atmosphere. We ordered the hummus and veggie platter and were served Club crackers (literally from Walmart) alongside it. When we asked for more, we were charged extra--which felt a bit tacky, especially considering the quality. I ordered the pulled BBQ chicken sandwich for dinner, and unfortunately, it was a miss. The bun tasted like a basic Schwebel's sandwich bun, not toasted, and the chicken was dry and sparse. My friend got the salmon and had a similar experience--overcooked and disappointing for the price. One of the wineries in wine country. They are usually on one of the many trails. I have been here a few times, and honestly, in the beginning, I didn't care for it, but it grew on me, and my experiences got better every time. Their food is very good and they have a large selection of wines. There is an outside patio, very pretty in the fall. Unlike many other wineries, you wait to be seated, and some will wait on you. I always enjoy the Grand River especially the ambiance, wine and sangria. However, I am seeing recent posts here and on Google maps from repeat customers disappointed by quality and service. I too felt my last two visits this summer were off, but do not like to post negative reviews. I am hopeful the issues being discussed are addressed and the Grand River can continue as a quality Winery with value dining. Haven't been here for years, but it is a nice stop. We stopped for lunch on a Tuesday and there weren't many people, which was a plus for us. They said the menu was limited, but there were lots of choices. I started with a glass of Austin Red, which was fairly full bodied. My lunch choice was a Club Wrap, which came with chips, coleslaw and a pickle. The patio is beautiful and the music was playing softly so we could have a conversation and enjoy our wine. Food was delivered timely and my wrap was delicious. The chips were crunchy and the coleslaw was the best I have had in a while. Service was just ok, but I was more flabbergasted by the fact that the servers just walked by trash that was blowing around because it was so windy. All 4 of us were served $23 steak dinners on plastic plates. I asked for gravy on my mashed potatoes and got none, no bread rolls served with dinner either. We stopped at the Grand River Cellars for dessert and I am so glad we did their desserts were delicious, and the service was excellent. The Chocolate Lava Bomb Cake was airy and rich. Very chocolatey and smooth. The Lemon Cake was pleasant tasting and finely created. The winery has a cute little patio and they have a full indoor restaurant. This place also has music in the evenings, with a small stage, check their calendar of events ahead of time. Grand River also offers community events throughout the months. Kudos to them for being so inclusive. Overall we enjoyed our desserts and our server was pleasant. The wife and I love the place and the food and it's our favorite spot when we go out in that area. It has a great outdoor area for eating and listening to music. But after reading some of the reviews I felt it worth mentioning that we also had an incident. I brought a bottle for the "refill" program that they have going on and after eating our lunch I got the bill. Now mind you when the staff came out to give us the bill they looked at it first before giving it to us. On the bill I noticed I was charged twice for the bottle. Once for the Refill and once for a new bottle. When the guy came back I approached him about what happened and he wasn't even shocked that we had been billed twice. The wife found it very odd like he knew it and figured we were too tipsy to notice. "oh, yea, I'll get that removed, I told them to do that before and they didn't do it." So he did know about the error the first time, but didn't verify it was corrected, or ignored the fact it wasn't correct. And we where not tipsy as that was our first stop of the day and we just got the little flights to see what they had. The bartender was a bit rude as well when I asked him a question. We rented the party room at Grand River Cellars for my mother in law's 90th birthday party. The space was decorated so beautifully for the holidays! 32 adults and 8 great grandchildren came from all over the country to celebrate. The space worked out fantastic. The food was delicious. We opted for the pizza,pasta and salad buffet. They also accommodated family members who are vegan and gluten free. Our server Gabby was awesome. She refilled our drinks and buffet efficiently and with a smile. Grandma had a wonderful time suuounded by family. I don't know what people are complaining about... Wish I had taken pictures to show how lovely this place is. I got the Greek salad and the oil and vinegar sampler with bread and it was delicious! The salad was huge and was a great "meal portion" with fresh ingredients and a perfect balance of flavors. The bread with oil and vinegar is a great item to nosh on between sips of vino. I tried the red sampler and the white/blush semi-sweet to dry; all fantastic wines, and the descriptions of each on the menu were spot on! I decided to get a sample of the maple ice wine and the port/ice wine blend... My. Goodness. I ended up getting a bottle of the maple ice wine because it was so unique and delicious. A lovely ice wine with subtle notes of maple. Not sickly sweet, and would honestly be a perfect compliment to something like bread pudding, French toast, or vanilla ice cream. The service? Phenomenal. Very sweet and attentive waitress who was more than happy to accommodate us moving inside to get into the AC, and she communicated well with the bartender so that it was seamless when we got our tab. The bartenders were happy to chat with us, and had no problem letting me purchase the dessert wine samplers after I closed out my other tab. Overall, I will absolutely be back again. I asked to speak to a manager to make it right and the manager told me that they didn't care if they had bad reviews, because they knew they will get the business still being in Geneva. I told them I understood they may be overwhelmed, But they didn't care to make the simplest compensation to make it right. We never got 2 appetizers. She ignored amd entire end of our table? And never took their order. The Slovenia sausage was like a shriveled hot dog. The hostess was very rude and the wait staff was short and slow. The owners should be horrified with employees that are representing their business.
