What is the appeal of this place? I like good Chinese food. I'll even do mediocre Chinese. But this is awful. Nothing has any flavor! Everything is at room temperature! Who wants a lukewarm egg roll?!? The "hibachi" is all cooked to within an inch of its life. Each plate comes out looking exactly the same, regardless of what you put into it! And how is a self serve ice cream cooler, where you scoop your own, not against some health code?!? If your like old style large floor plan Chinese buffet, Grand China Buffet on the circuit around the old Franklin Mills Mall be your jam. Tons of cheap Chinese American dishes like found in most corner take out shops, plus for dinner the addition of a few higher end items like steamed crayfish, shrimp, crab and fresh fish fillets in various spicy or sweet/sour sauces. These last ones are only available after the lunch service is over and the crowd rushes in for supper. Very large dining room accommodates several hundred people at once, and the buy in is only $13.99 for lunch and $18.99 for dinner. Price is right. Beyond all that, there is also more traditional American fare like chicken wings and fries for the cuisine challenged. Too, plenty of sushi and desserts from jello to cheesecake, not to mention a chocolate fountain when it is working. Problem is that almost everything is cool when eaten from sitting around on the serving tables so long, and the quality of the kitchen is about the same as found in most corner Chinois Americano houses; which is to say, mediocre at best. However, if you focus on the seafood and shellfish, you may feel satisfied. I saw many people with plate fulls of crab and cray or shrimp, up to their elbows in breaking shells and sucking out the meat with abandon. Those folks really got their money's worth. The rest of us, well, it was a closer proposition. But, witnessing how into it my lady was (at least three plates piled high with broken and crushed crab shells), I suspect we will be visiting this old joint with some frequency, along with the thousands of others who can't get enough of too much. read more

This place maybe the worst I've ever seen and I have seen some pretty bad buffets almost no food to eat here. And what is here not very good

I pray you're reading reviews before going and you see my most sincere message. Like you, I come to yelp to check out other's experiences. There are times what's written seems sus and I try it anyway. Tonight was one of those grave errors in judgement where my risk taking got the better of me. I'll save you from having to read all of the other reviews. Just. Don't. Go. 1) Confirmed, there is food that tastes like detergent. I couldn't nail down what it was -- the soy sauce at the sushi bar? At least 4 different things on my plate tasted like chemicals. It truthfully ruined the rest of the meal. 2) Confirmed, food not served at ServSafe temps. Yes, I'm a science nerd and probed at my table within 2 minutes of plating. Needless to say, I passed on the few items that didn't pass muster. (You don't carry a temp probe?!?! ThermoPro or CooperAtkins have great pocket probes!) 3) Filth. The napkin holder on my table had sticky mess all over the top of it. Their mops (or the mop operator?) likely need replacing because edges in the dining room and bathroom have a sludgy wedge of floor juice in the corners. Flies zooming around isn't a good sign either. No hot water in women's rest room. ALL of the sinks. (Never mind that the "rest room checklist" was BLANK and numerous other disgusting things found on attempting to find a usable stall. 4) Confirmed, it's a damn ZOO in there. Not entirely the restaurant's fault but holy sh*t, the customers are savages, esp related to kids and the lack of parenting. Unsupervised at the ice cream, running through the rows of hot tables, galloping up and down the table aisles pushing/shoving one another. Not a single staff member intervened, even when they nearly knocked 2 customers over or when an entire plate of food hit the deck over a child tantrum. 5) Confirmed, this place is NOT safe. I should have turned around and driven away when I saw no less than 4 signs from the restaurant AND Phila PD warning about vehicle break-ins. Despite a security camera trailer not too far from the entrance, I came out to find a car a few spaces from mine had been smashed and tossed. Also, dirtbags in an ungodly noisy catless DP'ed Civic were tailgating and tossing beer bottles in the parking lot like they owned the place. 6) Confirmed, the waitstaff is pushy and not entirely friendly. They post up at the ends of the table aisles before you walk to get your food. In theory, this might be great for them to rapidly serve customers, but it's gone sideways. Scowls on their faces. GLARING as you eat. It completely stressed me out. 7) Confirmed, whatever's going on there causes GI upset in someone known to have a cast iron digestive tract. I've been accused of being raised by wolves and being able to eat carrion but tonight got the best of me. I'll be cutting this short to go hang out with my porcelain friend. FML PS. $18.99 on a Saturday for adults. Seniors get a 10% discount if you show your ID. A drink is $2.79. This buffet has the most variety out of all the ones in the area. I like that their food is not overly salty here. The wait staff here can get a bit rude. Better than expected all-you-can-eat buffet that serves Americanized Chinese food. You will not get top-end ingredients but for the amounts paid the food is tasty and often freshly cooked albeit pre-frozen. Bottom line: Definitely a notch above the golden arches for flavor. Rude staff and patrons. Loud interior. Excellent parking. Driving is always a major hassle in this mall; every traffic light is timed to be red and reckless drivers abound. Declining neighborhood yet still nice by Philly standards. Crime is common both in this store and the rest of the mall, so enter in large groups, carry defense spray, and lock your vehicle's doors. And make sure your alarm is working. A manager was stabbed in the chest here by a thief who refused to pay. The perp was caught but released weeks later. Welcome to Philly-style justice. read more

With a name like Grand China Buffet, I expected this to be... well Grand. While there are a lot of choices on the buffet, its anything but grand! When I entered the restaurant, there was a odd dead fish kind of smell in the entrance. The rest of the restaurant didn't smell as bad, so I thought it was maybe some type of cleaning product. I should have left at this point. The food simply wasn't good. Most of the items I had were pretty cold, which makes me worried if they are being kept at a safe temp on the buffet. The items were dried out and pretty tough. There was little flavor as well. Later that day, I had quite a bit of "stomach issues". The seafood that is IYKYK Grand China Buffet is a good local buffet that has all the usual Chinese good options and then some. They had a wide variety of sushi, American food and I love the Mongolian/ Hibachi/ soup station although you're not allowed to mix the options up you will get pointed at and yelled at (how do I know? Let's see, I wanted shrimp and the hibachi didn't have shrimp so I asked the guy cooking , can I add the shrimp to my hibachi and you cook it? He said yes. As I'm waiting, another guy comes out with AirPods and started yelling NO MIXING, I explained calmly the other guy said I can add a few. They don't understand much English, he kept repeating himself and I ended up with a howl of soup as well) Now back to the review, many steam tables with different variety like crawfish, fried blue crabs, fried shrimps, coconut shrimp, spicy shrimp, salmon, fried fish, cold shrimp, mussels, clams all of my favorite. Typical Chinese buffet but has a good amount of selection. Pricing is not bad and they have a hibachi and Mongolian grill. I love the Mongolian grill, it's a great concept! The food is a hit or miss on flavor but there are some good choices out of the bad ones. The dessert choices are interesting. It's mainly ice cream, the chocolate fountain, and the small Chinese cakes. It's mediocre, but there is one thing that gave it the 2/5 stars. The temperature of some foods are very questionable. Enough to where the food might be lukewarm approaching cold to room temp. That's where food poisoning can set it for certain foods and can be dangerous for prolong period of times. Rating would be higher like 3/5 if they can fix the temps for their buffet cause it could get someone sick. Otherwise it's an ok buffet with a cheap price. read more

First off this establishment has a sign posted at all tables that says "Plz don't waste food. Take what you can finish". The food was cold. General Tso was nothing but breading with sauce. The fried rice was good. Overall it wasn't a good experience. I know they have a low rating but that doesn't always mean The for trash. But in this case yes! The decor was nice. Quality Chinese buffet with your typical fare. Favorite is coconut shrimp which is only served at dinner time (evenings and all day Sunday). Some staff are nicer than others but overall nice place to eat. The ambiance was alright nothing too fancy but it was nice enough. read more

Servers are very attentive and do t let your drink get low. Downside is the food is mediocre I mean yeah its a buffet so it is what it is the real kicker is its actually really good food other than most all of it is cold otherwise it would be for a fun time out to eat if it was all piping HOT! I got food poisoning after eating here and was violently ill for two days And reported them to department of health so other people don't get as sick as I did . The food here is about on par with most Chinese buffet places - low quality bulk prepared and filling garbage. My low score is because of the service we received. Our server was fairly rude for the duration. She seemed annoyed to have to do her job. Normally, especially during the continuing pandemic, I would find this understandable, but it really did seem like she went out of her way to project annoyance. In addition, there was a $3 off coupon on their website and when I showed it to her she literally grabbed my $1000 iphone and just wandered off with it. Although I surmised she was going off to ask a manager about the coupon, the way she just absconded with my phone without asking permission was not appreciated. Then, at the end of the meal, because there were two adults and one child in our party we asked to split the check on two cards. This was when the waitress really went off the rails. She said fine, but then grabbed the check and obnoxiously pointed to the suggested tip amounts at the bottom. Basically saying "But what about my tip?" So I said "Yes, when you run the cards, we will write in the tip accordingly." When she came back with our split checks for our signatures, she then stood there LINGERING to WATCH US sign, and she was clearly attempting to put pressure on us to leave a tip. Which we would have done ANYWAY, for crying out loud, but guess what sis? This is a buffet. Standard tip is 10%, you did not do a full service waitstaffing job. However because it's the pandemic we have made a habit of tipping 25% to EVERYONE, but because of your behavior, your tip dropped to 15%. Me, hubby, and baby go there so much that they immediately start talking to us the moment we walk in lol. They make these toy balloons(butterfly, sword,etc) and added additional ones on the stick, they range from $1 to $2. Baby got to get one every time we go to Grand China. I got plates after plates for their crawfish, cheese spinach, cheese crabmeat, asparagus. Today I like the lomein and the buffalo wings too. Hubby enjoy cheese spinach, cheese crabmeat, fried chicken wings, fried rice, crab cakes, etc.... My family and i went on mother's day evening. Seems like regular price for dinner was 13.99 I gave them a call to ask price for dinner that night The woman on the phone said it was 15.99 since it's holiday. I dont know why mother's day is holiday but anyway.. when we got there, price was actually 16.99 and The place was packed. So many food tray were empty or filled with non popular or cold food. This place is pretty typical when it comes to Chinese buffets. The one thing Grand China has going for them is their large size so they have many stations and a large variety of food. That being said, I appreciate quality over quantity. While their selection is large, their food is very average. If you just want a quick Chinese buffet meal and don't care about the taste of the food, this place is probably fine. I don't recommend their sushi but their Mongolian BBQ section is actually pretty good. You pick whatever foods you wants (meat, veggies, noodles, or soup) and a chef will cook it fresh for you. Their desserts are nothing to write home about but again, if you're not picky and just want something quick and easy, it'll do the trick. The one time we went, they must have not turned the heaters on below the food cause everything was cold.
