I really wanted to like this place but it just didn't do it! Beautiful day to sit outside with waterfront view for Happy Hour. Convenient to the ferry port. Location is awesome! First disappointment(s) 1 hour into HH and they did not have a few of the HH menu items - boneless wings and cheese steak egg rolls. I hope the wings were really out because the daily special was offering wings for $1 each and these were pushed. The diet soda that was served was pretty flat and had a strange flavor and was definitely an off brand. The chowder was creamy but had a very sweet flavor to it not much of other flavors. Could be canned or frozen? Double Burger was cooked well and served with a bag of Cape Cod chips. Had to ask for pickles as did several other diners. It was bland as well, was not seasoned. We also had tater tots that were served on a pool of ? ?? The French fries that my dining companion opted for with her burger were grease soaked and were an undisclosed up charge of $2! Grain On The Rocks is at the Lewes Ferry Port. I was looking for a place for happy hour and the place we wanted to go to (Irish Eyes) was packed. It was a beautiful day out and we wanted something on the water as well with outdoor dining. This was our first time here and the atmosphere and outdoor dining was wonderful. The food was such a disappointment. The Happy Hour menu for food included: Loaded Tater Tots ($7), Traditional or Boneless Wings ($11), Cheesesteak Eggrolls ($9), Smash Burger ($10), New England Clam Chowder ($8) and Oyster of the Day (1/2 dz $10; dz $18). Happy hour beverages included $2 off draft beer, Rail Mixed Drinks ($6), Crushes ($9), House Wines ($6), and Canned Domestic ($4) - Miller Lite, Coors Lite, Natty BOH, and Michelob Ultra. They also had Weekly Specials (Sunday) which included Traditional Wings ($1 each) and $10 Grain Burger along with some others, you can see in the attached photo. We arrived at 5 pm and the Happy Hour Menu is from 4-6pm so we were only an hour into the Happy Hour. They were out of the "Traditional or Boneless wings ($11) but said we could order the Sunday weekly specials of traditional wings at $1 each. They were out of the Cheesesteak Eggrolls as well. I elected to have the Loaded Tater Tots from the Happy Hour menu and the Smash Burger which came with chips and the server asked if I would like to substitute the chips with fries which I agreed. The Loaded Tater Tots were cheese sauce, bacon, scallions and sour cream. They were greasy and the cheese sauce, I don't know. I couldn't even tell you what type of cheese it was. Maybe cheddar, but I'm really not sure. There were just a few pieces of bacon on it and loaded with sour cream. Not very good. The smash burger was 2 4oz beef patties with cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion on a potato roll. No pickles. Who serves a burger with no pickles on it or on the side? We did request pickles and they were given. There was no offer of any ketchup or it being on the table. I asked for BBQ sauce and received that when I had a bite left of the burger. However, the BBQ sauce was very tasty. The "cheddar cheese" was a mix of cheddar and mozzarella or something and it was shredded cheese not a slice or anything. Guess they were running out of cheese and had to improvise. There was a huge chunk end piece of lettuce that should not have been on the burger, and the tomatoes were chopped not sliced. Who puts chopped tomatoes on a burger? After having this AMAZING burger in Virginia Beach a week ago at The Atlantic on Pacific for $6 on their Happy Hour menu, this was "ok". I accepted the substitute of fries with the Smash Burger over the chips. I was truly sorry I did that. They were partly raw, greasy, and I don't know how else to explain them. Just horrible. Some looked like they were overcooked but yet they were not crispy or anything. Just limp fries. Majority undercooked. To my surprise, I received the check and my burger was $12 where my sisters was $10. The only reason for the upcharge would be the substitution of the fries for the chips. Say what? There was no mention of the upcharge when offered, which is just horrible when servers don't mention any additional charge for things and the way he offered it was like it could be substituted free of charge. Needless to say, that $2 came out of his tip since he didn't have the knowledge to notify a guest of this. Not to mention the disgrace to be charging $2 additional for those undercooked and overcooked greasy piles of disgusting things they call French Fries. I also ordered a Diet Coke which I like to have with lime and what do you know, they were out of limes. This also tasted funny. It was either really cheap Cola however, it tasted more like pretty flat soda. Sitting on the dock of the Bay (hee hee get it?) was the best part of this meal. The service was ok. Things were delayed when requested, such as the pickles and BBQ sauce (which was requested at time of order). The food was horrible. The fact that they were out of so many things just an hour into happy hour and the cheapness of the cheese sauce on the tater tots that you couldn't even notice the flavor and the greasiness of it and then those fries. No, I can't get over those fries. No reputable place would ever serve fries like that. It was just horrible. I wanted to like this place, and it was a pure let down. Definitely a pass for me. Irish Eyes is right down the road; on a bad day they are better. Awesome Happy Hour menu, just make sure you get their early enough so you can get a spot at the bar (inside, porch or outside) or a high top in the bar areas. read more

We ate here on a Monday evening around 6ish. We went here after arriving on the ferry because it is conveniently located at the harbor. We were promptly seated (we ate outside because we had our dog with us). They had giant fans to help cool down patrons dining outside, which we appreciated because it was a hot and humid evening. Our server was a very friendly, professional, and prompt young man. He quickly got us and our dog drinks and appetizer order. Short thereafter he delivered our drinks and took our entree order. The Philly cheesesteak egg rolls were delicious! They were served with a spicy ketchup, which complimented them well and was surprisingly tasty! I had their cheeseburger and fries and my wife had their lobster roll. We both enjoyed our meals, and would recommend eating here when taking a ride on the ferry. Really, we come for brunch and you serve us coffee in a paper cup! That was the beginning of a very bad brunch! The food was so bad, served cold. We had to hunt down our server three times. All the staff was gathered by what appears to be an office, they were talking and laughing and having a grand old time. Our guy was indifferent to us. We were never offered coffee refill (IT WAS BRUNCH). We asked for ketchup which never arrived. Getting a glass of water was out of the question. Considering it's right next door to a major ferry terminal, the Grain is a surprisingly pleasant space to pass the time while waiting to board your ride to Cape May. Indoors is clean, spacious and well lit, with sorta new-ish industrial but modern decor and a really nice happy hour - $5 beers! with an okay tap list. Outside you have a sprawling patio with great views of the bay (and ferry). I only stopped in for a beer so I can't speak to the food, but the bartender was nice and the service was quick. Wanted to take a ferry from Lewes to cape May but arrived 1 hour early . Didn't know what to do and wanted to have some light food . Kids and us ordered few things . This place had a few bars inside and outside. Ambience was good and lots of tables inside to dine in . Service was pretty slow... waitress never comes to us to ask for stuff .. they said they had draft beers on tap but when we asked for something to taste , they said their draft didn't work well. I came on a Monday to get some food and drinks. I ordered the salmon blt which was really tasty! I also got a cosmo which was standard and Chardonnay. It wasn't too crowded at the outside bar so I sat with a view of the water. As I was there, the ferry docked which was fun to see. Another picture in my review was from last year sitting at a large table with another great view at sunset. They also have a cute outdoor area with play toys for the kids, seats, a fire pit and more. I was really happy that the SoDel group recently took over. The old team was horrible, serving more horrible food. The menu is kinda limited, ok, they do volume here. Ordered a 'Jersey Joe" club sandwich. Multigrain, and one slice each of ham, RB, turkey and cheese. A bit of slaw, and invisible Russian. Comes with a tiny bag of Sysco chips. Gotta pay $2 for fries. Not bad, but this is NOT a $21 sandwich. Sausage & pepper sub is $20. C'mon! My son had fish & chips. Beauty cod fillet (fresh) and low end fries. Fish was excellent. Came with honey mustard. Had to ask for tartar sauce. It was more like lemon mayo, not tartar sauce. Had to ask for the missing cole slaw. Biting flies everywhere. Damn water bowl for dogs was 3ft, away! Good bar cheesesteak. $14.25 and it came with fries. When I first saw a cheese sauce poured on top I was not excited. When I bit into the Cheddar cheese hiding inside, I was very excited. I wish it had more meat. The roll was of the chewy variety. I was looking forward to air frying the leftovers but I forgot them in Cape May. read more

I have been taking the Cape May Ferry several times this past month. On my return in Lewes we arrived a bit too early for our next return ferry, therefore, we decided to enjoy our dinner here. I am glad we stopped here for dinner. When we checked in at the front, we were told it was about a 15 minute wait for a table outside. We waited about 15 minutes for our table of two. We were seated at a nice table outside. I started with and enjoyed my frozen mango margarita with silver tequila, mango puree, lime and lemon juices and real sugar for $12. I also enjoyed my Hula Bowl for $18.75 with salmon instead of yellowfin seared tuna, because they were out of tuna. The hula bowl includes jasmine rice, avocado, edamame, slices of carrots, scallions, and spicy aioli. I especially enjoyed their spicy aioli. My total bill was $67 less gratuities. Service here was surprisingly good considering that this is a ferry restaurant. The restaurant is located on the water so there are some nice views of the bay. We agreed we will continue to return here again given the opportunity. read more

We stopped in one weekday afternoon after reading some questionable reviews about Grain On The Rocks, we had to experience it for ourselves. Offering free, ample parking. We arrived with very little expectation. We sat outside at a table, along the water where we were able to watch the ferry. The ambiance is wonderful. Along with the inside area to sit and interior bar, There is a nice outside bar to sit at also. The location is amazing. There is a beer garden with a tiki vibe also.Our servers name was Mikayla(sp), she was very pleasant and attentive. We order a Cola and a Beer to start. We ordered a simple lunch, bone in wings and . Simple and delicious! We didn't have to wait to be seated and did not have to wait long for our order. Let's start with the $9 Dewey Beer Swisahy Pants. Not served in a pint glass, (the bartender told me they don't even have any) for that price but in a 12 oz cup. $13.75 for a lb of chicken wings that were tasty but under-sauced. The hamburger I ordered took 30+ minutes to get to me and I didn't have time to eat it at the bar but had to get it boxed up for the ferry. It was overcooked and seemed to be a frozen patty but don't quote me on that. It could have been more tasty, in fact pretty tasteless. We went to the bar inside but then switched to outside because the bartenders did not greet us to take our order. So, we decided to go to the host to get a table and order drinks instead. We are currently waiting to be greeted by a server. Two tables after us have been seated and already been greeted, had their drinks ordered, and served. The service is pathetic. Anyway, I know it wasn't Austin's fault; he wasn't supposed to be our server, but he came to the rescue after we told the host. Worst food we've had at the beach! We love Lobster Roll and get it at all the good restaurants here, we've had it here at grain before too and it was chunks that were just a little dry, overcooked and unflavorful. However, we decided to order it again. This time it came all mushy oily and shredded. Literally like eating mush and didn't even taste like lobster! We tried to eat it and it was inedible. The sweet potato fries were also overcooked and hard and dried out. As well as the brussel sprouts as you can see from the picture. Not a very good experience (the waitress wasn't very nice when we unfortunately had to bring it up), but the manager was very helpful and professional.
