Nothing beats a great family-owned, small-batch ice cream shop. I stopped by the Northbrook location and tried the seasonal blueberry pie ice cream--it was fantastic. The shop itself is spacious with plenty of seating both indoors and outdoors, and the staff behind the counter were genuinely friendly and welcoming.
This is located in downtown Northbrook. There's parking around & easy with a tiny bit of walking on a weekend. I got to try the signature raspberry chocolate chip, cherry chocolate chip & coconut. Coconut was my least favorite & the raspberry chocolate chip & cherry chocolate chip were incredible. I got a double scoop in a waffle cone & it's highly substantial, making up like half meal so go a bit hungry, not after a full dinner. The double scoop is something like $1.50 more vs a single scoop ($6) & a waffle cone is only $1 add on. Service was good but lines are behind (5-10 min wait) so don't try too many flavors & keep others waiting. Ambiance is a cute little shop & lots of people order it to go & walk around the cute downtown Northbrook instead of dinning in. Protip: They offer self serve free water at the end of checkout, so you canwash down your palette instead of ordering a drink & loading up on more calories. Also, there is an app offering an initial free ice cream, single scoop & you can do an upgrade for the price difference. Great addition to the area! I want yo try the cakes next time.
I got the chocolate waffle cone, birthday cake ice cream and peaches ice cream. It was very yummy but they were out of a lot of flavors. The place was a little gross inside too. Friendly staff. Moved decently fast. Parking is street parking.
Only in "The Chicago" Berbs can you find an ice creamery that's 155 years old! And for anything existing 155 years, they must be doing something VERY right - and in Graeter's case they certainly are. Their Flavor Menu is so eclectic that it took me several minutes to not only deduce what the flavors were, but also take several minutes to make my choice. I chose - black cherry chocolate chip in a cup that was pretty darn great. Coming from California, I grew up with these incredible brands: * Afters Ice Cream in Huntington Beach * Humphry Slocombe, San Francisco * McConnell's Fine Ice Creams, Santa Barbara * Wanderlust Creamery, Tarzana so I had the advantage of some of the best creameries in the country. Graeter's Ice Cream was up there with the "Biggies". I love what they do and how they do it!
After a family gathering at a nearby Italian restaurant, we stopped by for some ice cream to end the evening. The staff were friendly and happily offered free samples, which we appreciated. The ice cream itself was good, but the selection of flavors felt fairly ordinary. There wasn't anything particularly unique or memorable that stood out or surprised us. The shop had a pleasant atmosphere, and the service was welcoming, but overall it felt more like a place to visit once rather than somewhere we'd go out of our way to return to.
Honestly the best ice cream I have had in awhile. This shop stays busy but it is worth the wait. They have their standard flavors and limited edition/seasonal. They let you try samples before you commit to your purchase. I ended up getting the skyline chili scoop in a cup. It sounds weird but the taste was phenomenal, it even had oyster crackers in it but so good. They have some table and chairs set up inside.
This is an updated review and I've been coming to this particular location for years since they open. Very sad to see the Winnetka location close. Came here on a random Friday evening after having an early dinner right down the street in downtown Northbrook and this place was completely packed with families and children. It was a great site to see. The staff here is always friendly. They were eager to help and ask if you had any questions. The staff you're always seems to be very young perhaps high school age employees and I think that's a great thing because it presents a great opportunity. As always, they have incredible flavors and options and it is the best quality. This last time came by for ice cream as usual and it's great that the indoor seating is very nice and cold while the outside is been super hot.
Boldly bearcat is probably my new favorite ice cream ever- marscarpone ice cream with Oreo and chocolate pieces. The chocolate pieces literally melt in your mouth. Love how this is small batch ice cream- and you can really taste the difference. The ice cream is pricy for a scope, $6+ but well worth. They do have pints, cakes, and pies, along with chocolate. I believe they also sell smoothies and shakes too. The store is very clean and well taken care of- and has old school vibes to it. This place is in a cute downtown area, near the train station and a parks.
$6.33 for a kid's cup!? Ridiculous. It's decent ice cream but that price is highway robbery. Horrible value per dollar.
Decided to stop in on a Monday night after having dinner across the street. This location was hopping! Service was extremely fast as long as you knew what you wanted to order. Many delicious handcrafted flavors to choose from. Prices are a little higher than normal but worth every penny! I tried their small hot fudge sundae minus the nuts with double chocolate brownie ice cream. Delicious! They have indoor and outdoor seating available. A great way to spend a summer night in downtown Northbrook.
Hands down the best icecream I've ever had. Miles above anything else I've reviewed. Kosher too! Clean environment, on-the-ball employees and plenty of great flavors. Cherry chocolate chip 5 stars Black Raspberry chip 5 stars Cotton candy 5 stars Mint chip 5 stars.
Love love love the ice cream at Graeters !!! The staff was very helpful and guided us pick their best flavor. Nice cozy place for a quick dessert date Bet you can't have just one
Thanks to a promotion that offered some certificates for complimentary ice cream at the popular Graeter's Ice Cream shop to our daughter, and we are lucky that there's a shop right in town, we went there and checked it out. This ice cream shop is almost always busy, when we went on a late afternoon on a Monday, there was still a line, but it moved pretty quickly. The promotion was for a single scoop of ice cream on a sugar cone (it's $5.25 each on the price board). I got a signature Black Raspberry Chip, Hubby got the Black Cherry Chip, and daughter got the Mint Chip, and they were all delicious. I read that Graeter's makes small-batch ice cream with the French Pot process, which results in ice cream that is dense and rich. I like the ice cream that I ordered a lot, it had a nice flavor, and was creamy and smooth! However, even though I love chocolate, I don't care that much about the big chucks of chewy chocolates in the ice cream. Of course, this is only my personal taste. I wish there is an option for black raspberry without the chip. There are so many different flavors, though, I will try another flavor next time I go. The staff members that we had encountered were all friendly and welcoming. The place was clean. There were a lot of nice seating indoors and some outdoors. The Village Green Park is just right across the street. The views from the Graeter's shop are pretty nice. Although it could be pricey to some people, they do have a special for July, they are celebrating National Ice Cream Month and also their 153 years with $1.53 single-dip sugar cones, you do need to download their app though. If you like ice cream, I would highly recommend this shop!
Nice corner location with convenient street parking. The place is big for an ice cream shop, with plenty of window seating. I'm somewhat unfamiliar with Graeter's, I believe they're based in Indiana?!? In any case, I had the chocolate/coconut/almond shake so that I could compare that to Oberwies' exact, same shake. And here are the results of my fact finding: - the shake is in a paper cup so you can't really see it unless you take the cap off - no whipped cream, no cylindrical cookie - I think they use more milk than ice cream, as a result, it was lighter and not as thick - related to bullet point 3, it wasn't as rich in flavor and lacked crunchiness (from the almonds and coconut) - this shake did provide more chocolate chunks at the end of slurping everything down, that was a big plus. I took some Chunky Chinky Hippo to go and I'm looking forward to trying that during a hot summer night. read more

Josh the manager was very rude, I had to use the bathroom, he run to me and stopped me. I told him, me and my wife customer here and my son is a regular customer , he told me that he doesn't care since there's a rally he isn't letting me use the bathroom. I told him I'm very disappointed, Josh the manager, told me that I don't have to come here and he doesn't care that I will tell to my son to stop to buy is weekly ice-cream cups and I don't have to come here. Must say, the ice cream is excellent but Josh the manager must learn manner and can't stay as a manager that supposedly need serve the community in Northbrook and keep the customer happy. read more

Good ice cream speaks for itself. This ice cream was amazing! I'm lactose intolerant and they offer several flavors. It honestly didn't taste different then regular ice cream. I'm not going to comment on atmosphere because we took it to go. The staff was helpful. I do wish that I could have sampled the ice cream before ordering. read more

Graeter's Ice Cream was- you guessed it- pretty great!!! No, really I LOVED their ice cream. It's one of the best ice cream parlors I've ever been to because their flavors are so wel developed and they have so many options. I highly recommend their S'mores flavor and their Maple Cinnamon Crunch! So yummy. Price was standard for ice cream places like these. I found it WAY cheaper to just buy their pints as opposed to actually getting their scoops. Sure, it's not exactly the same experience and whatnot but you get so much more! A double scoop is about $5 and some change. A pint is $5.99. Seriously, do yourself a favor and get a pint. Just stick it in the fridge for later and now you've got some for when the craving hits! I also may have checked their website and found that they sell in local grocery stores too! It may be even cheaper. I've found my new obsession!! A pretty location and a beautiful interior. They are taking precautions against COVID-19, with limited capacity, face masks, and marked spots on the floor. Everything is separated and their dine-in is closed. read more
What a fabulous job this store has done during these Covid times. Walking into the shop they sectioned off the counter creating a good distance from their employees and customers. There was also boxes marked off 1 and 2 to stand in so that only smaller groups would be inside the store at a time, the others if there was a line would stand outside. Then they also extended the credit card machine to away from the cash register and after each customer they wipe off the machine. The napkins and spoons along with receipt is placed in a paper bag that is handed to you and then you can exit the designated exit. read more

Closest location to McHenry County. Love the seasonal flavors and their new Bonus Flavors. New bonus flavor added about every two weeks. Today's was Caramelized Chocolate Truffle. Tastes like salted caramel, creamy chocolate, & lots of little chocolate truffles. All their ice cream is creamy, delicious, and perfectly flavored to match the name. Graeter's started in Cincy (Cincinnati), OH and has been a ice cream favorite for several generations. This location is located near the train line and across the street from a park. Plenty of places to walk around while licking your ice cream cones. Only disappointing thing: Graeter's, as a company, has decided to discontinue selling all low-sugar ice cream flavors! Why? Their monk fruit Low-Glycemic ice cream is a real treat for diabetics! Please, please, please bring it back! Friendly, helpful servers. Free samples to help you choose the flavor you want. Clean dining room. Restrooms around the corner from the cashier. read more

Our favorite local ice cream shop. The folks are always friendly and it feels like a home town shop vs a chain. They have the best selection too! If you're a brownie fan - give their brownie sundae a shot. You won't be disappointed. read more
One of the best old-fashion handcrafted ice cream shops in the midwest. Oh, and you're gonna wanna order the black raspberry chocolate chip ice-cream. This is what they're known for. You can tell this place is good as Baskin robins across the street is empty and everyone comes here for a reason. Located very close to the Northbrook train station, and very good on a summer afternoon. Around five dollars a scoop/cone. Pricey. YOu're getting good quality, and the raspberry chocolate chip is addictive. read more
I just love the quality of the ice cream here - smooth, silky, fresh, rich. Delicious. Service not the best, but the quality of the ice cream makes up for it. Great store with ample seating, attractive displays and plenty of little things to peruse and possibly buy. I can tell the quality of the ice cream by tasting their vanilla because it does not have nuts, chips and other ingredients to distract from the natural flavor. Just scrumptious. My favorite. read more

Friendly service; great ice cream! Highly recommended! Very comfortable and cozy, with ever-burning fireplace, chairs & tables, and windows on two sides (corner location, across the street from a park with many lovely trees and children's swings. A great afternoon break! read more
SO excited that Graeter's is in the neighborhood! Which of the following do you enjoy? A) dense, huge choc chunks B) pretzel cones C) a selection of candy and Papyrus cards to also choose from D) a frequent buyer rewards program via a free app called Loyaltree E) a slightly trashed environment for having been open only a few weeks* If you answered one or more of the above, stop on by Graeter's! My current fave flavor is the mocha chip. Very refreshing, intense coffee flavor, and you will not be able to get enough of those chocolate chunks! Note also: I actually DO NOT recommend the bourbon pecan chip. It has a weird banana-cherry fusion flavor. *We've been here twice in the first couple weeks of Graeter's grand opening, and I was surprised at the number of dirty napkins left on tables and ice cream spills left on the floor. I mean, I know it's hard to keep up with the lines of customers, but someone should do a quick cleaning of the tables every once in a while, with the volume of families and little kiddies coming through. On our first visit, the paper towel dispenser in the bathroom was completely empty, and there was a not-so-clean looking roll of paper towels sitting on top of it. Not very inviting, and not the image I think Graeter's wants to maintain. read more

Our go-to ice cream place here in Chicago. But of a drive, but the consistency of the food and the incredible customer service make it worth it. We drive a few miles further to go to this location over the Winnetka location, as they're just that much better here. read more

Just opened not too long ago. Line out the door, but it moved quickly. Be sure to see my tips. Apparently the first location in the state of IL, which I found very interesting. Why not down town? I asked and the staff member said the location reminded them of a fave place of theirs in Cinci. I have been told by OH local that the blueberry pie is the go to which was NOT on the menu, so I opted for the bourbon pecan chip instead. If you like bourbon, you will like. Prices are on par with like establishments. Not sure why they like to put chocolate chips in everything. Even more disturbing I had a big chunk of chocolate bark in my cone stem which took my bourbon trip in an entirely unwanted direction. They do offer some flavors sans chip. No cake cones?! What?! What?! read more

Hi Alexcia, thanks for the sweet review! We're happy you enjoyed the…
Good ice cream, standard old fashioned flavors with a few modern twists - salted caramel...hazelnut. Prices are outrageous - $3.50 for a kiddie cup, $4.25 for a single cup and not one sundae is less than $6.25. Soon as the "new place" euphoria wears off people will head back to Baskin Robbins kitty corner from here. read more

Went here yesterday with my daughter and her friends to celebrate her birthday with some ice cream after the school day. I always find the staff extremely friendly, patient and place is clean. We were waiting for her friends to show up, and not once did they pressure us to order. Hands down this ice cream is delicious! Plenty of flavors to choose from, cone, cup, Sundaes and coffee, Latte & Cappuccino. All in all this place has great service, ice cream can't be beat. Summer can be a little Crazy here. So I recommend if and when summer does decide to show up in Chi-Town go on the early side to make sure you get in before closing. My personal favorite is the Bourbon Pecan. Yummo! read more

What a find driving thru Northbrook. Ordered black raspberry with choco chip and cafe macchiato on waffle cone. Taste was wonderful. You can taste the long history of this creamery.deep flavor not too sweet nor fatty. Just the right balance. I wish the server was a bit friendlier. Otherwise it would have been a 5 read more

Best ice cream we've ever had. If Oberweis is 100... this place is 1,000. Only problem for us is we live an hour away. :( Took the wife and kids. We were all in heaven. We had: 1). Dark chocolate brownie 2). Chunky chunky hippo 3). Chocolate coconut almond 4). Chocolate chip read more

When you're in the market for a place to call home, it's all about LOCATION.. and when it comes to finding an ice cream shop to call your second home, it's about location and TASTE. Yes, this place is a little more expensive than your average ice cream shop. But you're getting a nicer quality ice cream - very creamy, very smooth.. and they have fantastic seasonal flavors! My personal favorite, however, is their black cherry chocolate chip. It is HEAVEN in a cone! My second favorite is their salted caramel - and it's a heavy contender for first place when you load that baby up on one of their PRETZEL CONES! The sweet & salty combo is perfect for mommy as she watches her two little humans deplete the rest of their sugary energy at the (gorgeous) playground across the street! You can pick up a pint (or two. or six) at this location as well, but I'd rather just get my ice cream dished up for me. I feel less guilty that way. My friend came with me once and ordered their affogato. She loved it, but it was her first time ever having one. I was a little taken aback by the price (over $5!), but I'm still not sure if the size matched the price - it's still only 1 or 2 shots of espresso over a scoop of ice cream. Standard anywhere you go, but for double the price. Let's not forget, however, which neighborhood we're in ;) Overall, this place is my favorite dessert stop in the area. In good weather, it's got that perfect location so you can sit outside and watch your kids or just watch the cars go by. On not so great weather, just do it from within the building! ;) read more

Hi Michael, we appreciate your feedback and will be sure to pass it…
This place is amazing and does not disappoint. I usually get the black raspberry chocolate chip but I'm also open to trying the flavor of the months. This one is peanut brittle and was delectable! The service is usually quick and very friendly. The coffee is also pretty good too! One thing is my friend was in a rush and had her baby with her, as many busy moms she grabbed food on the go and met up with the rest of us for a ice cream play date. The manager came over as she was eating her salad and said she couldn't eat it in there because it's a kosher place. I'm not sure what the exact details were but it was a bit of a bummer as Moms on the go with little babies you eat where you can when you can and it set kid of a weird vibe on the rest of the time we were there. Apart from that instance I've only have the best experiences at Graeters! The first time I tried it I needed up going back every day for a week because it was that good!! read more
