Big day for my 13 year old! He got his braces off and asked if we could stop at Sweet's after for an ice cream treat. I thought ice cream was reserved when the braces go on, but who can say no to ice cream on a hot summer day. And getting your braces off is a big deal! Ice cream isn't the only "sweet" thing at Sweet's. They have chocolate and candy too, but he was on an ice cream mission. Lots to choose from, but after sampling a few flavors he opted for a cookies & cream shake. He said it was very tasty and enjoyed drinking it without all the cookies getting stuck in his braces. Downtown Lake Forest is lucky to have a great homemade ice cream shop a long with homemade fudge and other candy. It's a very creamy ice cream and they have great waffle cones. They have lots of options and make baskets of candy and chocolate covered confections. I'd lose my paycheck if I lived close by. read more

A sweet evening to stop in and get a scoop of ice cream at Sweets. I went for the coconut almond joy on a chocolate sprinkle cake cone. The ice cream was creamy and full of coconut flakes, chocolate chunks and almonds. The only quibble ( a small one) is that the chocolate band of sprinkles kept falling off the cone. I love the chocolate and ice cream here. However, the service is not good! I took my children here, and the service was even worse. Usually, I would like a smile, or even a "welcome" because these people are forced to! But these servers? NOTHING. Not even when you say thank you! Don't expect a you're welcome. I have been going here for years because the sweets are delicious and the location is convenient. However the service is absolutely awful. I'm done! I want to know who pissed in all these people's cereal! Not once in all the times I've gone have I been greeted with a "welcome" or even a smile for that matter. I wonder if the owner knows every employee in their shop has a severe case of resting bitchy face. I feel like I'm burdening them with my presence. With the high price of the product I would at least expect a thank you and a smile. I guess that's asking too much. I finally found this place! The luxurious smell of candies hits right as you enter. The pecan praline ice cream was smooth and creamy. Slightly sweet. Really cute chocolate shop. The quality of chocolate is exceptional. My favorites are the chocolate with almonds and turtles. The toffee is excellent too. The ice cream is great too. I love the Blue Moon which reminds me of bubble gum ice cream. Service is too notch and friendly. My only gripe is it's really expensive!! More expensive than Europe as I've gotten chocolate from Brussels, Paris, etc which is home to some of the best chocolate in the world. Good grief I love this place. My wallet, however, does not. So we come to Sweets as a special treat. When we walked into this place with the kids, my lindergatener exclaimed that it was like walking into a candy shop. Because really this is what this place is. It's dreamy and smells wonderful and you just want everything. The ice cream is amazeballs. My kiddos want blue moon. But this mama is all about the caramel collision. It's possible this ice cream may be illegal in a couple of states. My hubby and I also adore the individual chocolates. The coconut are my favorite. Ooo. That and the chocolate covered apricots. Sweet visit to this sweet shop! My daughter found her favorite ice cream here, Blue Moon. I opted for some chocolate; a piece of toffee and a dark chocolate turtle. Anything dark chocolate in here looked good to me! I also like that there were some unique flavors of ice cream and cold drinks to choose from. It wasn't too crowded yet on our visit, which surprised me because it was around lunch time on a sunny Sunday. Wow I'm buzzing from the rich milk chocolate in my cashew cluster and the mint ice cream cone treat I stopped in for today. They don't mess around here. No fake crappy chocolate at this place. I'm not on a diet, but I'd surely and gladly break it here. Each bite is worth every extra pound. I'm not much of an ice cream fan. In fact, I'm especially not a mint chocolate chip ice cream fan. But holy cow thank you to the four-legged friend who contributed to making this supreme scoop of silky lusciousness. Cute but expensive. Everything from the decor to the presentation of the sweets were delectable. The prices were not clearly displayed which was inconvenient. I would rate 3.5 stars for the festive decorations and themed sweets. I definitely would return to try the ice cream but for this trip, I only got a ladybug. which was pecans held together with caramel and chocolate. My family has been going to Sweet's for many years. It is an ice cream shop, a candy shop, and an old-fashioned soda fountain all-in-one. The ice cream is Cedarcrest brand and really good. They will make you a milkshake or malt by hand with any ingredients you choose and they are delicious. I recommend the caramel and chocolate for ice cream Sundaes as they make it in-house. The handmaid toffee and other chocolates are fabulous. Many times I skip the ice cream and chocolates and go for a simple handmade Coke. They pump in the syrup and add the carbonation. If you've never had a handmade soft drink, it's worth the trip alone :-) They have some interesting food items as well, care to try a chocolate dipped Twinkie? Or, how about the novelty candy section for a package of Pop Rocks or other memorable candies from your childhood. The store is always decorated for the current season or special holiday. It's not just a place to visit during the summer. We enjoy our Sweet's fix year round. Try and visit around Easter time to see the massive chocolate bunnies :-) Don't be discouraged if you see a long line when you arrive. This was a quaint old fashioned ice cream parlor that has about a dozen or so flavors. I saw an ice cream container sitting out and it looks like they serve Cedars Crest ice cream, from Wisconsin. A single scoop on either a sugar or cake cone will run you about $4 (including tax). Scoops are decent sizes (not like Homers but bigger than Baskin Robbins) and flavors are pretty standard. Amongst my kids and I, we tasted the mint chip (didn't see any chips), elephant tracks (chocolate with itty bitty peanut butter cups), chocolate and strawberry ice cream (strawberry was the winner IMO). They had a variety of sprinkled cones and you could add a magic shell type of topping if you'd like. Seating is limited to the counter and by the window but there are some benches nearby and you could always sit by the market square fountain. They also had some old school candies (i.e. candy dots) and a large selection of chocolates but we didn't try any this time around. Cute shop for the area. read more

The displays of handmade candies, treats, gift baskets, and such are ready to be taken home with me. Everything is calling my name! The good news for my waistline is that I usually only leave with ice cream. They have hand dipped and soft serve ice cream. Their hand dipped selections change time to time. The waffle cones are fresh and delicious. They offer a great variety of ice cream treats: sundaes, shakes, etc. There is street parking in front of the store. The people who work there are efficient and business oriented. They don't mess around. I can't say they are overly friendly. There is a counter or two to sit at...small. It's a must-bring for when my mom comes to visit from Illinois to Maine and has made for many happy family and friends. But the prices do make you think it must be coated in gold. A classic Lake Forest staple! All the ice cream from here is delicious. As kids, my brothers and I would bike here from our house on summer nights for a yummy cone.
