I absolutely love this place. Every time I come through Pacifica - I always stop here and get a plate. The portions are good size and it's a little pricey by it is worth what you pay. I always enjoying the people and again I can't speak enough to the food. The ribs are fall off the bone ribs and the brisket is tender. I also recommend the pull pork. It's all kinds of awesome. The sides are good - not great. So that would be my only bad thing if you want to call it that. Overall this place is a four stars! read more

After a great morning trying to catch a wave down at Linda Mar, nothing beats grabbing a combo at Gorilla Barbecue. Gorilla is one of those places that you can easily miss. It's in a bright orange cargo train car that many of us pass by on highway one every time we try to hit the beach. Now despite, being a small place, with no real seating (other than the picnic tables on the hill next to the restaurant), I really have to recommend the place. The pork ribs are spectacular. They literally fall off the bone. The brisket is superb, and despite my best attempts at self control, I really can't stop myself from devouring every juicy slice, fat and all. The hot links are simply a joy. The sauce is spectacular, with a slight smokey taste, a tart vinegar tomato base, and a creeping heat that seems to be from a good ol' dash of Dave's Insanity Sauce. One warning! Don't be overconfident and ask for "extra hot" as I did one time, as "extra hot" is enough to make a grown man cry... or hiccup for a good thirty minutes. The chicken and the pulled pork, while good, aren't my favorites on the menu. I'd have to recommend a two item combo with the pork ribs and the brisket, for a sublime carnivorous experience. I'd give Gorilla five stars, but I'm disappointed by their take on two of my favorite dishes. The grilled eggplant, is only sufficient and tastes too much of balsamic vinegar. Second, the rice and beans needs a little bit more flavor. I think that maybe their recipe needs a little bit more salt pork or pork fat is needed. Despite that, Gorilla is one of the best barbecue places in the bay. I know what you people are thinking, why did this guy wait in line for an hour, at a BBQ spot, for a sandwich?? Fool didn't get the ribs. They ran out of ribs smart asses!!!! Coming back from a trip to Texas and gorging on authentic Texas BBQ, I was not sure if the BBQ in the Bay Area could hold up. Surprisingly, Gorilla BBQ does! Who knew BBQ from a trailer parked on the side of the highway can be so good? All the meats are smoked just right -- not overly wet with sauce, but a good balance between sweet and spicy. The mac-n-cheese and cornbread it comes with are delicious as well. This is strictly a take-out joint, with no place to eat whatsoever. Have a plan of action where you want to eat the BBQ. If you find yourself traveling down the 1, this place is easy to miss but it is a must stop. Gorilla is a great permanent BBQ food "train" cart fashioned out of a old train car. Prepare for a wait on weekends, but the line moves fast. They do have some picnic tables outside, but most customers end up parking their car in the lot and getting their food to go. Pork ribs are a bit fatty and require some careful trimming before consuming, but very tasty. I like their rub and smokiness here over all of the other places I've been to in the city. The pulled pork is excellent and very juicy. Beef brisket is mouth watering and some of the best I've had. Beef ribs are hit and miss depending on how dried out they happen to be. One tip: If you are making your way here, try and get here by the early afternoon, sometimes they sell out of the good stuff! In the summer of 2010 my wife and I planned a trip from our home in Las Vegas, through the towns of Reno, Nevada and from there, Sacramento, Oakland, San Francisco, San Jose and Los Angeles California, visiting family along the way. At the time I was big into this television show, Diner's Drive-In's and Dives. On this show they once featured a man with the words "pork ribs" tattooed to his own knuckles. The man cooked barbecue and I was interested in checking out the place. The place is an orange railway car turned into a barbecue joint. Who doesn't want to see an orange railway car ? My three year old daughter sure did! Low and behold we did find the place, Gorilla BBQ, on a late afternoon. Sadly we pulled into the parking lot just as the owner turned a sign around to signify the closing of business for the day. We needed to stretch our legs anyway so we got out and started to take pictures of the business. The owner, Richard "Gorilla" Bacchi came out and actually took the time to greet us. We told him of our travels and he was very thankful that we had Gorilla BBQ as part of our plans. Gorilla invited us come inside the converted railway car, and offered us a small side dish of macaroni and cheese for our daughter. The wife and I each took a bite of the side dish and it tasted amazing! I offered to purchase a soda, and Gorilla said that was on the house as well! A few pictures later and we were on our way. We decided to do that after we realized the food may've tasted "off" because it steamed in the takeout box and the texture changed. So we were planning to eat in the car when we noticed some makeshift tables up the hill from the parking lot and we ate there. Guess what? We were right. The food was dramatically better. You can taste the smokiness in the meats. All of us left full and satisfied. TIPS 1) The meats are best when they're eaten right away. Don't let them steam in the box. If you must drive somewhere else to eat it, have them cut some slits in the box so air can escape. 2) Bring a jacket. Pacifica gets really cold. If you plan to eat at the makeshift tables, make sure you wear layers to keep warm. 3) The 2-meat combo can feed two so consider splitting the meal. I'm originally from Texas where there is amazing BBQ so I avoid BBQ in California because I'm afraid it will not taste as good. Wow! We were super impressed with the BBQ here! We arrived around 5:00pm on a Saturday, and found they were sold out of all meats except the ribs. Fortunately, the ribs were amazing! The tangy taste of falling off the bone pork ribs still lingers on my lips like a the day after an all night make-up session in 12th grade. The ribs were that good. Thank goodness we did, the portions were huge! After a short 5 minute wait, Caroline and I hiked up, with anticipation, a small hill behind the train cart and made ourselves comfortable for our afternoon indulgence. Beans and rice was just so-so. The pull pork sandwich was really good and I liked the bread roll that it came with; no lettuce, no tomatoes, no onions, just meat. Stopped by on a Tuesday right when they opened, walked right in, and ordered without having to wait in line. I ordered the 3 meat combo with ribs, brisket, hot link, mac n cheese, and potato salad. I tried to demolish this entire meal while sipping on my coke in my car but I had to throw in the towel. The brisket was my favorite because it had a smokey taste that did not require any extra sauce on it. The ribs were second and paired well with the BBQ sauce. This might be a Pacifica pride! The food is great and the service is very friendly. The brisket is always tender, the spicy sausages pack on some real heat, and the ribs are fall of the bone tasty. On the sides, the mac 'n cheese and beans are both crowd pleasers, and I always get their muffin style cornbread as a dessert afterwards. Ask for extra BBQ sauce if you like that (and I like that).
