Uhhh...holy shit this is some good stuff! The fact that there is a line forming well before they open, and that the line gets about 35 people deep about 20 minutes after they open pretty much tells you all you need to know. Although it has a rather unusual sort of name for a BBQ joint, it feels oh so fitting after you get your order of food. I'm thinking it got the name because the serving size would probably be enough to fill a BBQ loving gorilla's stomach. In any case, the ribs, hot link, and chicken are ridiculously tasty, though I hear some days certain items will taste better than others. Regardless, it's still better than pretty much every place i have ordered from around here thus far. As for sides, the cornbread is a big winner, while the portabella mushrooms and mac n cheese aren't exactly slouches either. Get there early to grab yourself a table on the hill and get to chowing down while other people are still waiting. Once upon a time there was a girl who was craving some down home good BBQ for lunch. At noon, she whipped out her iPhone and searched Yelp for some good eats before deciding to take a chance on Gorilla BBQ. Once she arrived in Pacifica at 12:30, she was quite suspicious due to the lack of a line (previous reviews said to expect one) and she immediately thought, "Maybe I made a mistake by coming here and maybe it sucks". But she proceeded across the wooden steps to the tiny shack and placed her order regardless. It was sort of difficult bringing the baby carrier up the steps to place her order and then having to sit in her car eating on her lap. She wished maybe someday they would expand and add a seating area. There was a party for her palate. IT WAS A CARNIVORE'S DELIGHT! Long overdue review. Small BBQ joint in an old railroad car strictly for take out only (no tables to dine in at). Saw this place on Food Network's Triple D show a couple years ago and the hubs and I were curious to check it out. In order to properly sample the entire menu, we ordered ribs, brisket, chicken, pulled pork, corn bread, baked beans, coleslaw, and garlic mash. Mind you, this was enough for at least four people. Or two or three separate meals for one couple... which is what it ended up being for us. I'm not a huge BBQ fan, but I truly like coming here. CALL AHEAD. Yes, they have a menu. Yes, they make those items. But they make it fresh daily, and when it's gone, it's gone. The later in the day you go, the more likely that things will be sold out. It's delicious and a hot commodity. A great business plan, but if you go in the afternoon, it's hit or miss as to what you'll be able to get. It'll be delicious no matter what, just be open and flexible. Stopped by here because I wanted some good BBQ without having to pay for parking in SF. I got the 3 meat dish which included the brisket, ribs, and chicken. The Brisket wasn't as good, no smoke ring, spice, or tenderness, but the ribs and chicken were delicious. You're going to have to eat in your car or take it home because it's not an actual restaurant (literally). It's an old train wagon that got converted into a kitchen. Gorilla Barbeque knows how to make some great meats. Barbecue is all about the meats, and Gorilla BBQ has that aspect down pat. Their sides, however, were lacking, which wasn't really a problem for me since their meats were so good, but prevents me from giving them a 5th star. I liked that they had some different options for sides like eggplant, zucchini & mushrooms, but the sides were not very good. This is located in a railroad car. There is just a small ordering area & no restrooms or seating, so it is meant for 'take-out'. I ordered the 2 meat plate & paid a dollar extra to get the better meats. -Ribs: These were some giant untrimmed spares. So juicy and tender. I even took a picture of a perfect bite mark in my ribs. They had a good smokiness to them and the rub was okay and served dry instead of wet (yay). I don't think the rub impacted the meat too much, but that was fine since these ribs were so juicy and flavorful on their own. After watching that TV show and seeing them put cumin in the rub, I was a bit worried that it would negatively impact the taste since I'm not big cumin fan in my barbecue, but that didn't end up being a problem. -Brisket: The brisket was moist, but was a tad bit too tough for me still. Unfortunately, I felt like I had to sauce these up to really enjoy them. -Corn Bread: Basic corn bread. -Beans & Rice: Really bland and boring. -Coleslaw: These tasted way too much like raw cabbage to me. I think this meant that it needed more vinegar or more creaminess. It definitely needed something to cover up that raw cabbage. -Eggplant: I thought it was awesome that this was an option, but it was pretty bad. Hard & not tender. -Sauce: I actually really liked this sauce. Tangy with a strong flavor. It greatly helped out their brisket for me. _______________________ Conclusion: I can see why Gorilla BBQ is so popular. Those ribs were some fantastic barbecue. Their meats are done very well. I think after having gone to Texas it's hard for most "meats" to compare because they're not really as good, tender, flavorful, juicy etc. as anything there ... but their pulled pork and BBQ sauce really took me by surprise. Get a combo with the ribs, brisket and mac and cheese, those items were standout amazing, the meat was super tender and flavorful, the mac and cheese was crusty and had intense cheese flavor. After seeing this place on the Food Network we promised ourselves we'd take the short (yet seemingly long) drive down to Pacifica to try it out. Today was that day. The weather was good, about 80 and what better way to escape the heat than to head to foggy Pacifica? Finding the place was easy enough though unfortunately it's only accessible from one side of the street. We ordered the 3 meat combo, both sides being mac and cheese. We got the brisket, pulled pork, and ribs. Along with the combo came a cornbread muffin and beans and rice. The BBQ sauce is served on the side, which is a good thing if you don't like too much sauce. We moseyed up to the picnic tables outside the place and opened up our containers. The mac and cheese was good, but nothing spectacular. It's actually pretty good with the bbq sauce on it. Out of the 3 meats the ribs were my favorite. They were really juicy and full of meat. The pulled pork was the second tastiest. It's some of the best BBQ I've had up here, but definitely not the best BBQ I've had. Each serving of meat is 1/2 pound so the 3 meal combo was more than enough for 2 people to share. I'm not gonna lie. I found out about this place because of my addition to the Food Network Channel's Diners, Drive-Inns & Dives (GUY!!!). We got the pulled pork, the ribs and brisket with sides of mac and cheese, rice and beans, and potato salad with two sides of BBQ sauce, oh yeah and my corn bread muffin! :) The ribs just fall off the bones, the pulled pork was cooked to perfection and were so tender. I had a three meat plate (shared with my wife and her family) of pulled pork, brisket, and links, and two sides of coleslaw and mac and cheese. The pulled pork and links were nothing special at all. I will say the brisket with crust and the mac and cheese were both very good. But only two of five items were worthy of eating again. Sure, it's close if you live in Pacifica. After a great morning trying to catch a wave down at Linda Mar, nothing beats grabbing a combo at Gorilla Barbecue. Gorilla is one of those places that you can easily miss. It's in a bright orange cargo train car that many of us pass by on highway one every time we try to hit the beach. Now despite, being a small place, with no real seating (other than the picnic tables on the hill next to the restaurant), I really have to recommend the place. The pork ribs are spectacular. They literally fall off the bone. The brisket is superb, and despite my best attempts at self control, I really can't stop myself from devouring every juicy slice, fat and all. The hot links are simply a joy. The sauce is spectacular, with a slight smokey taste, a tart vinegar tomato base, and a creeping heat that seems to be from a good ol' dash of Dave's Insanity Sauce. One warning! Don't be overconfident and ask for "extra hot" as I did one time, as "extra hot" is enough to make a grown man cry... or hiccup for a good thirty minutes. The chicken and the pulled pork, while good, aren't my favorites on the menu. I'd have to recommend a two item combo with the pork ribs and the brisket, for a sublime carnivorous experience. I'd give Gorilla five stars, but I'm disappointed by their take on two of my favorite dishes. The grilled eggplant, is only sufficient and tastes too much of balsamic vinegar. Second, the rice and beans needs a little bit more flavor. I think that maybe their recipe needs a little bit more salt pork or pork fat is needed. Despite that, Gorilla is one of the best barbecue places in the bay. Coming back from a trip to Texas and gorging on authentic Texas BBQ, I was not sure if the BBQ in the Bay Area could hold up. Surprisingly, Gorilla BBQ does! Who knew BBQ from a trailer parked on the side of the highway can be so good? All the meats are smoked just right -- not overly wet with sauce, but a good balance between sweet and spicy. The mac-n-cheese and cornbread it comes with are delicious as well. This is strictly a take-out joint, with no place to eat whatsoever. Have a plan of action where you want to eat the BBQ. Close spot for a casual lunch after checking out Mori Point. The 3 meat combo is more than enough for 2 people! They give a generous helping and i found myself with enough pulled pork leftover for breakfast, lunch and dinner at home. Mac n cheese was a bit bland. Cheese and pasta is always good but i would get an extra scoop of potato salad instead. Also, no restaurant seating! We were lucky to snag one of the tables up on a hill bordering the parking lot.
