This is a place that my close friends from Mexico brought me to well over a decade ago. I've been to it many times since then and even go by myself to just grab a true Mexican food. The servers are super nice and smile and will be silly with you. Even though each time I've been in there, I am always the only American among total Mexican people and others from other countries, yet they treat me so nice and never treat me like I'm not supposed to be in there since I'm not Mexican. Multi-level grocery store with bakery, meat counter, and eatery. What more could you ask for? The produce looked fresh and was priced reasonably. The grocery portion of the establishment is small but packs quite the punch in variety of items - frozen plantains and yucca - plenty of tropical fruit nectars - Mexican cheeses - and more. The bakery had wonderful smelling conchas, turnovers, donuts, and more as well as a cake case full of beautifully decorated party cakes. Nothing labeled. I assumed it was all tres leches. It just entices you to interact with the baker in my opinion. They also sell cakes by the slice. The heart of Gordos is their taco counter. A cafeteria-style buffet of all the meat fillings as well as a self-serve buffet of condiments and fixins for your tacos. I ordered a LENGUA and an AL PASTOR. It was not anything to write home about, but I'd love to try the other options. Ooooohhhh. This place has been on the list for quite some time now. When trying to decide where for lunch, a friend suggested it. Win. For quite some time, I have touted Los Valedores food truck on Green Springs and Oxmoor as the best street tacos food truck. And that may still be true simply because Gordos is not a food truck, but a restaurant. Gordos is currently in the lead on my Birmingham street tacos list. First - the quality. All the meats here were simply tender, juicy, and therefore very tasty. And I got asada, carnitas, chorizo, and chicharron. They were out of al pastor, so that's what is on the list for next time. Seriously all of these were fantastic. The chicharron was amazing. So tender. The last place I had chicharron over fried it, so it was too crispy and chewy. The hot sauces were all freshly made with different levels of spice. The orange one had to have been  habanero based . Second - the speed. It's a taco bar where you pay, they put the meat on for you, and you grab the cilantro, onions, hot sauce, etc. on your own. Super fast and simple. Third - the environment. Even though I got takeout, there is something about eating the best street tacos in a joint that is connected to a Mexican bakery and grocery store. Fourth - it's true to its name - Gordos. I ate four tacos, and no doubt I could have skipped dinner. And even later in the evening after it all digested, I still felt fat and heavy. No false advertising here. Delicious. Unfortunately for me, I have not been in Mexico yet to check how tacos really are where they are from. But, I have a feeling legitimacy is not questioned here, and regardless, those tacos are darn good! Cherry on top, each tacos costs less than $3. And, if you are craving for the actual cake and not just the cherry, few steps upstairs and you get yourself in a delicious bakery with any kind of sweet treat from cakes to cold desserts! Mexican to the max. This combined grocery store / cafe / bakery has all the Mexican staples and then some! They had every Mexican spice you could want to cook with, fresh produce, snacks and even celebration cakes. And tacos of course!! They did get our order wrong and left out three chicken fingers, but we had plenty of food in the end. The tacos, burritos and quesadilla were STUFFED with meat and fillings. What a nice little hole in the wall! There was literally a line out the door when he first got there with so many locals. The restaurant portion is very small so there's not many seating options inside but they also have tables outside available too. After placing our order, we received our food in less than 5 minutes. They cook everything in front of you so you know it's fresh! I had the cubana torta and it was mouthwatering. The portions are huge!! I could only eat a half of a half. My Mexican friend is in town and he's introducing me to all the hidden gems in Birmingham that I had no idea about! Gordo's is a true authentic Spanish market nestled off of Valley Ave! I've passed by this place millions of times and never even noticed it! As soon as we walked in, we were greeted with warm smiles and a language I didn't understand, Spanish. When entering, there was a butcher cutting away at meats, so we selected steaks for tacos! We picked up a few more items, fresh baked bread and fresh cilantro from the produce section. There is a restaurant there as well, but I plan to visit and eat another time. I love discovering new places that are foreign to my usual. I'm excited to visit again! Being from a border town I always find myself picky when it comes to Mexican, this place hits the spot and feels like home! Authentic and delicious food, great prices. I had their al pastor and carnitas tacos. The tortillas are clearly homemade and fresh, so soft and perfectly flavored. The meat was tender and SO so flavorful. Cannot complain and tempted to go back multiple times a week! Great for takeout but they do have a few small tables if you want to sit and eat there. There's also an attached little Mexican grocery for all your Mexican candy and snack needs, as well as basics like dried beans. There's a bakery attached too for all your Mexican breads and sweets! Whenever I come here I wish I speak Spanish, ha. We love coming here. Their food is yum. You can eat there (order some tacos, you won't regret it) or you can buy the meat by the pound and make some tacos at home yourself. Both options result in yumminess your tummy. I recommend brushing up on your High School Spanish before coming here. It is not a must but I found that it certainly would be helpful. I found that even other customers tried to help with any communication issues for this Gringo. I can't speak to how authentic the "street tacos" may be. I will say they were some of the best tacos I have had. You can certainly tell all of the ingredients are extremely fresh. I decided to try a variety and went with the Pollo (Chicken), Carnitas (Pork) and Asada (Beef). The pork was my favorite but would be more than willing to eat any of the others. They have a variety of fresh salsas and other toppings. This is where I had my biggest communication problem trying to find one that was not too caliente. I love this hidden gem. They have the most authentic Mexican food. The meat is so flavorful. Chorizo is my absolute favorite. I also love their tortas, which are very filling. I love their food, but what keeps me coming back is the horchata. It is always a 10/10. Oh my tacos!!! We loved a good authentic taco and boy did we find them! So Gordos has three different sections, a bakery which smells absolutely amazing, a small restaurant, and a small grocery store with a butcher. We each ordered 2 tacos as we usually do. Chicken, asada, (which is grilled steak) and al pastor (pork with pineapple)which are my favorites. They have a small bar area where you can add your salsa, cilantro, limes, you name it. The tacos were some of the very best that we've ever had. That's a serious statement. The al pastor meat cooks on a spit that's infused with an entire pineapple. The meat is just delicious. The asada has grilled onions in it and the chicken was just that- pure shredded chicken all nicely flavored and juicy. We needed more so we each ended up ordering another three tacos. We stopped in through their bakery on the way out and picked up a few items. They were perfect since they were sweet but not so sugary sweet. Next time that you're craving tacos, go here. You order at the encounter and they call out your order, which makes service very fast. It's a no frills establishment that defines laid back dining experience. Gordo's is an authentic Mexican bakery, restaurant and grocery that is quite a treat to visit! I have been looking for something like this since I moved here from south Florida and Gordo's does not disappoint. One large building houses all three areas and each has it's own door for easy access. I will say that it is not very wheel chair friendly so keep that in mind if it pertains to you. I recommend entering up the hill at the bakery, working your way down the stairs through the restaurant and exiting through the grocery. You have to pay at the grocery for all of the food and product so it works well this way. The sweet bread selection is large and they have numerous cakes available to order. The smell inside is wonderful! Each sweet bread will run you $1, a great deal! I did not try any other food today, as it was only 10am but they have a good selection of traditional entrees. You can also purchase meat to take home as a small butcher stand is in there too! The grocery is small but has ample dried peppers, spices, sodas, popsicles, and pantry items. The perfect authentic taco experience right here in Birmingham, Alabama. I don't know how I've never heard of Gordos but I feel cheated. How did I not know there was such a perfect place for authentic Mexican fare?! We stopped in for an early dinner on a Friday so the crowd was just starting to trickle in. We surveyed the grocery for a while then went on to the bakery and finally ended in the restaurant. I love the variety that Gordos has while still sticking to their routes. The menu is in Spanish but the employees are more than happy to help you make a choice. They were so patient with me which I really appreciated. I eventually settled on a chorizo quesadilla and my partner had a few lingua and chicharrones tacos. We also took advantage of several salsas and toppings that were free of charge. I LOVED the chorizo. It was full of flavor and very satisfying. The tacos did not disappointment either with the crisp yet tender lingua and the pork skin that was swimming in a tasty gravy. This is my favorite taqueria! I've been eating here for about 7 years. There are a variety of meat offerings including: chicken, carne asada, chorizo, carnitas, and a few that are less common to the American palate (lingua, for one). I typically order chicken, carne asada or chorizo tacos or a chicken quesadilla, which is served with a small salad topped with sliced avocado. The large selection of sauces and other toppings are really what makes Gordo's special. There are red and green salsas of varying degrees of spiciness, and one creamy avocado-lime sauce which is very mild, but tasty. During the week, rice and beans are offered as sides. On the weekends, there is an amazing pico-di-gallo with avocado added to the buffet of toppings. The bakery on the top level of the tiered grocery store-taqueria-bakery is also amazing. Our family favorites include churros and pan dulce, which is a delicious concoction reminiscent of both cheesecake and pound cake, falling somewhere in between. First of all I love going to this store's bakery. They always have fresh made bread and pastries. I went in to get a small birthday cake for my daughter, for the size the price wasn't that bad. All their "to go" cakes are tres leches that can either be vanilla with either strawberries or peach filling or chocolate with walnut fillings. I ended up getting our favorite, which is chocolate with walnut filling. After having a bite that night, the cake was very moist and very wet with the three milks, just the way I like it! They also have chocoflan and flan, which from past experience they have been very moist and tasty too. As for the tacos this place has always been a hit or miss. The meats are already prepare, so you will choose from a selection, sort of like a buffet style selection, so they don't have that fresh off the grill taste. They have a bar with different toppings and salsas, it is kind of hard guessing which salsas are mild to spicy. The taco comes with 2 layer tortillas which is good for the amount of meat that they put on the tacos. The upsetting part is that the tortillas are not reheated either in the meats juice or a little bit of oil to get that crisp on them, which the tortilla can be very dry and breakable. read more

Street tacos are life!! Gordos has the best AUTHENTIC street tacos in Homewood...I've been to other spots (Tostadas, Mi Pueblo, La Tia Paisa) and Gordos is the best in my opinion. I've had several variations of their street tacos (pollo, asada, etc.) and the one that I keep ordering is the Pastor (marinated pork). The meat is seasoned well and incredibly flavorful and prepared well. They assemble everything in front of you...I typically ask for queso (cojita) and crema to go on mine. They have individual serving cups of onions, cilantro, lime, and red or green salsa. Very good flavor...my go to for street tacos. read more

This is a hidden gem in Birmingham for sure (literally). I passed it twice before noticing the sign on the side of the building. There are two entrances, one for the small grocery store and the other directly to the restaurant. If you take the grocery store entrance like I did, just walk up the stairs. My fiancé and I were quite intimidated at first because the menu hung on the wall was all in Spanish and most of the customers spoke Spanish as well. The owners were really nice and helped us with our orders. I asked for a plain vegetarian taco, which I don't think was on the menu because they seemed a bit perplex by my request at first. Lol. My vegetarian taco turned out delicious! My fiancé gave two thumbs up for his steak taco as well. My absolute favorite thing about this place was their condiment bar. In the spirit of Cinco De Mayo, I was craving horchata today. I had an incredible glass of horchata in Brooklyn last summer and wanted some of that here in Birmingham. After a little Yelp searching, I decided to try out Gordos for the first time. They gave us a glass and we filled it up ourselves. The flavor was pretty good, but it wasn't as thick as the one I had before and it was a little sweeter than my liking. Loved the cinnamon flavor though. This place has it all....the atmosphere is fun, but not something that some could handle. It is very authentic Mexican, where they make the food right in front of you. There is meat everywhere; cooked and raw. It is loud and hot, with minimum decor, but MAXIMUM flavor. It is the most authentic Mexican food I've had in Birmingham, maybe EVER! The prices are amazing for the amount of food that you get. Usually it's cheaper even than Taco Bell, and WAY better!!!!! (Taco Bell is the Dollar Tree of Mexican food...) There are no frills when it comes to the dishes. If you want frills, there is a bar to the side where you can spice up your dish. From fresh cilantro and limes to Habanero sauce that will make even your feet sweat, there is something for the weak and the strong. I wish I had discovered this sooner.
