    Henry, the service manager to call

    Having to get a tire fixed is one of my least favorite activities, because there's always a sense of being out of my sphere of expertise and being shunted through a sales pipeline of fee structures and last-minute margin increases in products based upon availability even after having research tire prices and labor costs ahead of time. I seek out a shop with a person that I can trust wherever I live, and I've just moved to this city so when I got a slow-leaking flat I sighed, because I had not yet found my place, my go-to person. Wow. Now I found my place, my contact: Henry Henry is the kind of service manager ninja who has memorized the customer, their vehicle, and last service and refers to it as they walk in. He sees people in the parking lot and opens the front door to greet them and ask what's the problem. Sitting and waiting for my service inspection to be completed, I had the pleasure of observing as Henry performed his master class of customer service and precision in scheduling and turning process into efficiency for the customer as well as the shop. He is a gentleman and also very direct in tone. If in doubt, he doesn't charge without explaining to the customer in detail exactly why and how the charges are built. He did my inspection and found a cracked wheel and didn't recommend a tire replacement even though he could have. No charge. He sent me on to a validated wheel repair shop that had a handwritten number and clearly years of referral stored away in his plastic binder of many local servicers. He put me in early on the schedule even though I had no appointment and it was a busy day. Further, I saw two different customers thank him for being so honest and helpful over time, and one was a busy professional who stopped by solely to make this statement to Henry. "Thank you. You are remarkable." If I had doubts I didn't after sitting in this lobby for 45 minutes and observing how the shop worked and the customers were treated. The shop deserves our support, and Henry deserves to be an operations and customer service case study in management and ops programs.

Service: 10/10 This place should win an award. They have ASE certified mechanics and highly & competent knowledgeable staff. I observed not only how they treated me, but other customers who walked in whether by appointment or not. It's not just a good business practice, but a good way to treat people. The gentleman I spoke with (Steve) was my POC and he took care of me and my car; answered every question (which was many) with almost a level of excitement to talk about the details of car mechanics. He taught me a lot and combed through the extensive mechanical analysis the shop did; guiding me on what are the "must fix now,""nice to have," "what can be postponed," and "what's completely unnecessary." They have a keen attention to detail. Amenities: 10/10 The free coffee is really, really good. There's a table with free bags of chips and books. The owner even has free copies of his book about being an entrepreneur which I was excited to take. The lounge is cozy. I was in there for a few hours doing work on my machine. The ambience and internet speeds were excellent. Service: I had the following work done on my Ford Fusion Hybrid: Fluid Change (Transmission, Coolant, Brake), Engine Mount replacement (they caught my engine rocking back and forth in the bay before a catastrophe occurred). They also did a thorough analysis of the rest of my car e.g. hoses, struts, suspension, etc.

I looked online to research what issues it could be. Starter? Fuse? Easy to repair? Take to shop? I was stressing. Battery "shouldn't" be an issue cause I got a new one a year ago from the dealer. So what was it? So this morning (Saturday) I took the car at 8am to see if Matt Curry's Craftsman Auto Care could fit me in. Initially, the service said I would have to leave it and they would shuttle me home. I understood and didn't expect preferential treatment cause I have been a loyal and repeat customer. What I didn't expect was that Ray told me he would have a tech look at the battery quickly and if it wasn't then I would have to leave it. It took 2 mins and they told me it was a loose terminal connection with the battery & they tightened it and sent me on my way. No charge. Again, I totally expected to pay for a diagnostic charge and was okay with it. But Ray chuckled and said all they did was tighten the loose connection. That is customer service. Other places would have have charged me and I would have been fine with it. But this act demonstated that they want me as a customer for life. And they got me for life. Quality, honesty and compassion/empathy. That's what you get with Matt Curry's Craftsman Auto Care. I am not the only one cause they are always busy! Cause tons of satisfied customers who trust their vehicles to this business! Over and over again! 5/5

    Time for a feel good great service story…read more This past Saturday I had a routine oil change at Valvoline in Alexandria. Upon leaving their facility I accepted a Lyft rider to Manassas. While cruising down I-66 the check engine light appeared on the dashboard. Upon completing the ride, I attempted to call the Alexandria Valvoline- couldn't even get a ring. Penny called, asked to speak to their manager..... nobody picked up. At this point I'm driving winding rural Virginia roads in a full blown panic. Penny then called the Fairfax location and spoke with their manager, Anna. They told me to bring the car into Fairfax ASAP. Within 15 minutes I was at the Fairfax Valvoline. Despite being the fourth car in line, Anna greeted me with the diagnostic sensor remote. After a quick read, it was the catalytic converter which trigged the check engine light. This was a first for my car. She then reset the dashboard. Upon her recommendation, I went next door to Meinecke. The manager there gave me a full blown lesson on catalytic converters and said it was quite possible the oxygen sensors 'got lazy' and gave a false read. Regardless, the current result is the probable false alarm from the dashboard and does not affect the performance of my car. If the light does reappear, the kind gentleman at Meinecke will do a more thorough analysis. Ultimately, it's great to have Penny come through in the clutch and Anna following through on a promise to take care of my car so efficiently in their shop, even though they did not initially service my car!! 5 Star Service!

    We got one flat tire... so we came here since it was close and we didn't want to break down or…read morecause an accident. NTB said it would take a couple hours. So far, we are still waiting after 3 1/2 hours and they finally got to our car. And now it's going on FIVE HOURS!!! FIVE!!!!! And they still haven't replaced the tire. Or fixed the TPMS sensors. The employees are yelling at each other. Arguing. The mgr in charge is missing and isn't taking any calls. Will we ever get out of here???? It's 6pm and we've been here since 1pm. WTF???? Will update later..... 6 hours and 45 mins later... one patched tire & 2 tpms sensors changed but one is defective so I will have to go back and get that fixed... a customer SHOULD NOT have to stay in the waiting area that long for a minor repair yet here we are. Also, the mechanic who worked on my car decided to leave without finishing the job. He left when his time was up. Eventually the manager and another mechanic had to finish up an hour after he left. I know they are doing their best but sometimes, their best isn't good enough. And the arguing and screaming between coworkers in front of customers is not a good look. No coffee, no cups, no sugar, no creamer, nothing in waiting area. Not very welcoming at all for customers. Overall a really bad and negative experience. I wasted basically my entire afternoon & early evening. I would give a negative star but Yelp doesn't allow it. I will be giving their mgmt a earful and then some. District manager & regional manager be ready. The least they could have done is comped my charges as my time is expensive, more than their labor per hour. They actually owe me money! Update the day after: they gave me a bad sensor so they reordered one and I am back here again to get it re-installed. I might have to take up residence here. Just missing a bed and a bathroom with a shower. It's been an hour. I appreciate the manager fitting me in while they are busy but I have been here over 8 1/2 hours the past 2 days. Still waiting for them to finish... So finally I was able to get out of there. A little longer than expected but the dang flat tire light was still on. They guaranteed me that the sensor is good and the plugged tire is also good. All the tire pressure amounts were good. As soon as I pulled out of NTB's vicinity, the flat tire/tpms light was off and I drove the car around for a couple hours running errands and all is good. Overall, it is still absurd for me to waste all that time there in the past couple of days. And I had to return cause the issue wasn't fixed. But now, I am satisfied with the result (for now). Add 2 stars for actually eventually getting it right and apologizing. All I wanted was a safe vehicle and ultimately, after going the long way around, I got there.

I paid $150 for a new tire and left thinking everything was fine. The very next day, that same tire was completely flat again. I put air in it and drove 30 minutes back. When I called ahead, the person on the phone immediately blamed the roads and said I probably ran over something, which felt dismissive. When I arrived, they found that a piece of metal had cut the tire. Despite just buying the tire the day before, I was told there was no warranty and my only option was to pay for another new tire. The manager, Mark, and employee with tattoos and big glasses were very passive aggressive throughout the interaction. I was talked down to, laughed at, and even told they wouldn't put my tire back on if I "kept arguing." When I tried to get their names, they refused and handled it unprofessionally. I ended up leaving with the damaged tire and went somewhere else where I got better service, a lower price, and an actual warranty. Very disappointing experience overall. I wouldn't recommend this place.

Even though it's a smaller shop, they have a comfortable waiting area with free coffee, snacks, and water, which was a really nice touch. They took care of my oil change and filter without an appointment and finished in less than an hour and a half. What really stood out to me was their honesty and generosity -- they even told me my next oil change would be free, which I've never experienced before. I've been to dealerships and many other auto service places around the Washington area over the past 20 years, and I can truly say this level of service is rare. This was my first visit, but based on this experience, they've earned my five stars. I'll definitely be coming back and highly recommend them!

They do a very comprehensive assessment of your vehicle, and I can always feel the difference in my vehicle after my repairs are done. They're very transparent, and do a good job of taking care of their customers by doing jobs well and in a timely manner. I think their warranty on certain parts and services is also great. They really take time to make sure the issue is resolved even after they install the new part. Brennan has taken care of me the past 2-3 of times at craftsman. I really trust these guys and will continue to use craftsman (in merrifield) as my mechanic for the future.

    5.0 Stars Outstanding experience and great customer service…read more Yelp brought me here. I did a search for the top auto repair shops in my area and Craftsman was well on the list. Reviews were solid. Once I realized how close I was to two of their locations, I made a mental note to check it out. I called, they were welcoming over the phone and not in a spazzy rush like some of the other shops I had been calling around to. They took their time over the phone!!! I made an appointment to get some estimates, showed up, told them my concerns, and they checked out a few things going on with my car. Again, very welcoming in person as well. I came to get an estimate for front and rear brakes replacements, possible oil change, state inspection. As I waited, I skimmed through two books the owner had written! They said I could have a copy, so kept one. The owner has the right idea and it shows. The waiting area was cozy and super chill equipped with coffee and snacks and TV. What took the service over the top was how well the gentleman took to physically show me what was going on with my car. He also took pictures. In the front office we examined the photos and he explained, and educated me about what was going on and what needed attention and why it was relevant. He made additional recommendations based on car mileage and manufacturer recommended maintenance. We discussed pricing and I agreed to get some of the work done. They gave me a Lyft ride home. Called me when it was done a few hours later. Scheduled a Lyft for me to return. Back at the auto shop, I paid and I was on my way. I felt really impressed because they explained things about my car I had never known about in the 5 years of owning it. I felt educated and walked away understanding things better. In all the 20 years I've maintained cars, no shop has ever explained things to me the way they did. I must admit, I felt the labor fees were a bit steep. I felt my wallet go ouch! However, I feel extremely safe in my vehicle because of everything I learned. I will definitely, without a doubt return for future maintenance work and I will knock out some of the other recommended maintenance items in the near future. Highly recommend. Great experience without a single hiccup.
