Thanks Macklemore, thrift shopping is back in! The most important thing to remember about thrift stores is that it is all about timing. The Goodwill Store in Kaimuki has some awesome bargains on some real high quality stuff. Remember, it is just up the hill from Kahala so I'm sure they get some great donations. And, I would never set food in a Salvation Army shop. But, timing is everything. I'll stop in for a quick look to see if they have got something good, but that is not always the case. So, one trip is not enough to find a Armani blazer or Cole Haan shoes. Persistence pays off. So, don't get frustrated if you don't find anything that fits the bill. Just come back in a week or two. Parking is not too bad mid-mornings or mid-afternoons in the municipal parking lots near by. Busier during lunch and parking is tough at night. On the opposite end of things, though, if you have some quality clothes or appliances at home, play it forward and donate them! read more

I'm one of those girls that has always bought her clothes, shoes, accessories, and whatnots from the mall, retail stores... ALWAYS, and usually at full price. One of my friends is an avid thrifter, and she always has this really boho put-together look. She never looked boring. Her style is eclectic and unique but in a very surf and turf kinda way, so one day, I asked her where she bought most of her clothes. I expected her to say freepeople or urbanoutfitters, so imagine my delight when she said, "I thrift shop! ALWAYS!" And that marks the beginning of me venturing into the Goodwill in Kaimuki. Their selection is very good, and I'm highly impressed. I recommend going with somebody who thrifts, and who knows how to thrift well. I would allow you to borrow my friend if I could. She makes the shopping experience that much more enjoyable. I scored a maxi dress, a nice skirt from Split that could also double as a tube top, a flowy dress, and a nicely patterned tank top. I'm pretty satisfied with my purchases for sure, and I can't wait to go back again... This time, I'm going to go early, and spend a couple hours in that store. A recent tourist to Oahu, and staying in Kaimuki with friends, I made visiting this thrift store a priority on my list- and am very glad I did! I love thrifting, recycling, upcycling- and the thrill of the hunt in never knowing what you may find. This was the only thrift store I had time to visit but it exceeded my expectations. This store was huge, racks neatly spaced out, floors clean, dressing rooms tidy and not overflowing with unwanted clothes thrown everywhere- which is often the norm in these stores. I started in the handbags and scored big time in 2 minutes- a grey microfibre Coach bag, worn but great shape for $19.99! Woot! Saw a second small Coach satchel, two Nine West bags, one Dooney&Burke but just purchased the one Coach. Found a cute top that ended up 50% off, lots of stuff to look at. One annoyance is that while racks are organized into "S" "M" and "L" sections, everything is mixed up size wise- making browsing the racks more tedious than it need be. Staff was courteous and I left extremely happy. My last visit was the day I was flying home- I bought too much stuff and needed to purchase a second piece of luggage to take everything home in. I didn't want to buy a suitcase at high Honolulu retail prices, but didn't want to risk shipping my purchases back to Canada either. I found an XL forest green duffel bag for $8.99 that fit my extra stuff perfectly and is a perfect neutral piece for future adventures. 10.19.13 I love thrift stores.. I can spend hours sifting through their racks just to find the perfect treasures.. The sole purpose of today's visit was to use the 20% off coupon that I got at Goodwill's "Go Glam" event a few weeks ago.. Parking was easy.. Use the the parking lot behind 3660 on the Rise (Wilhelmina drive).. Stalls 72-79 are reserved for Goodwill customers.. Keep in mind that you only have an hour.. I always have a plan whenever I shop so I knew exactly what I was looking for.. I started with the ladies skirts.. After flipping through a few items I noticed that they weren't size properly.. No problem I thought, It's probably just this section.. and then I realized that the whole rack was messed up.. still, no problem.. I found a skirt that met my needs and so I forged ahead.. ugh... it only went downhill from there... there were empty hangers galore.. on the rack, on the floor.. clothing just thrown over the racks.. clothing on the floor.. I finally gave up and decided I was wasting my time.. I probably won't be back any time soon.. read more

Been coming here for years, as it is close to where I stay when I'm in Honolulu, and because I have been getting good stuff here for years! Been hearing a lot about Savers, so I went there. Not overly impressed. I am very grateful Goodwill organizes by color; it makes it easier to search. When I needed a blue top to go with an Anne Klein skirt, I found a pale turquoise Tommy Bahama silk tank in 10 minutes. When I looked for a red sweater (because red is one of my stand-by colors), I found a J Crew cashmere sleeveless turtleneck. If I was in Savers, I'd still be looking. I found 4 pieces when I was here this time, and that was because I limited myself to $20. Some great labels. As with any thrift shopping, check carefully for stains and rips, Their selection of luggage was tiny, but I found the perfect, barely used suitcase to take my goodies (including a bottle of Lokelani sparking wine [amazingly drinkable stuff, people!]). My sister, the traveler was very impressed with the suitcase, and I promised to bring it back for her. Oh, and Savers is not a non-profit. They may give some monies to charity, but make no mistake about it, it is a business. That's fine if you're looking for low prices, but just don't think it is a charity. read more

Great place to go for deals especially if you have a lot of time to kill since although they try to be organized, it really isn't and you have to have the time to look for click quality things. There have been several times that I've found good deals. They also have items that would have been sold at Target in the front area which are good for stocking up on little gifts for the kids. read more

I like this location for donations. Drop off is easy on Koko Head Avenue on the East side. We come here at least once a year. It feels good that someone might be able to get a good use of them. We get more space in the house; it means we can get more stuff! YELP 365 - 139/365 read more

Although I support the mission in general, this is not a good location to donate things. They often limit how many boxes or bags they accept to just one or two or some days either no dishes or no clothes.. And it's just too much of a hassle to drop off two bags to them and then take boxes somewhere else. Big brothers and big sisters is an easy place to donate items. One stop and done. read more

Goodwill got a face lift! The store is much cleaner now and the customer service seems to have improved as well. Some of the prices are a little bit higher but the money goes to help support Goodwill's numerous programs so I am okay paying more. I love getting things for a bargain and second hand- it is good for the planet, for those less fortunate than us (that goodwill's programs help support) and for my own wallet! The book section is at the front of the store now and set up with a reading corner as well. They have such amazing kids books, awesome young adult selections and journals and coloring books as well. Granted, you need to have the time to look through things- call it hunting for treasure! The parking is a little tricky but there are metered spots and a metered lot on Koko Head Ave, just a short walk away. Remember to bring your own bag as well! read more

This is my favorite of the goodwill stores. The clothes are arranged by size and color, and yes, they get out of place on the racks, but when you're thrifting, isn't the search half the fun?! Usually a good selection on kitchen wares, fabrics, baskets, books, and so much more. So easy to spend a rainy afternoon here. I like this place alright, but they are picky with taking donations. We went to drop off a good working electric Christmas tree, and they said they wouldn't accept it. This is a bizarre practice. They were also fussy about taking a donation of rolling luggage. read more

Let me start here. I am a thrift store junkie. Perfect date day with my husband consists of hitting up thrift stores and digging out treasures. Goodwill Waialae is one of our go-to places. Not only because its in our neighborhood and a/c'd for hot summer days.. But because we've managed to fill our shelves (shelves we've bought from goodwill) with stacks of unique dishes and vintage kitchenware. All the pieces we bring home are ones you'd pay upwards of $12 at marukai for as low as $1. I've also found lots of clothes that are gently used and sometimes pieces that still have tags on them. I know some people are weary of recycled clothes and houseware -- but it doesn't bother me one bit. It feels good to get a deal but also feels good to support non profit organizations such as this. Minus one star cause parking can be the pits. read more

I figured I'd finally check it out since I'm in this used & vintage clothing phase. Funny, I never set foot in here even when I lived within walking distance. Anyway, I did find a pair of denim CK shorts, a Banana Republic top, and Charlotte Russe sweater all for $4.99 a piece. However, I can't say I really enjoyed the shopping experience. Came across a few stained items and every so often I had to sniff the merchandise because I'd catch a whiff of something funny. Clothing was organized by color and supposedly by size but by 3 PM that was no longer the case. Can't say the cashier was all that friendly either. read more

I'm new to the Yelp community but wanted to share an awesome experience that I had at Goodwill today in Kaimuki. I am new to the island and am just starting to get settled in my new place and there is always a few odds and ends you need when starting somewhere new. I went to Goodwill and the place was PACKED! Never seen a Goodwill so busy before! I headed in looking for furniture and a few glassware items. I immediately found a dresser still in the box for a very reasonable price! I flagged down a worker asking for some help in getting it to my vehicle and was met with a manager, Sage. He explained that he would take care of it and even offered to let me pick it up from the donation center on the side of the building!! I was so grateful I wasnt going to have to carry it all the way to my car. I found several additional items and made my way to the front. The line was quite long but I soon realized it was because of a Halloween sale. 25 percent off!! What a deal! The cashier who helped me, Mars, was also very helpful and polite and even recommended a few new places for me to check out in town. I was so impressed with the level of customer service especially with how extremely busy the store was! The store was neat and organized the people were very friendly and helpful, and the music was nice too!! I will definitely be back for more in the future. I DEFINITELY recommend this store if you are looking for a positive thrifting experience!! read more

Now that they have remodeled the inside of this location it's a lot nicer. Although I do notice that with the remodel they also jacked up the price on a lot of the women's clothing. You can find newer cheaper items at Ross now for what this location is trying to charge! However they still get 4 stars from me because the service is always friendly and attentive. They constantly have new items for sale, especially in the homewares area, and all in all the store is pretty well organized. Fitting rooms are clean, the store is clean, and there's no weird lingering smells. This one and Kailua are the best ones on island. read more

I'm in search of the perfect shrunken red blazer (with preferably gold buttons), so why not thrift for one? I decided to hit up this Goodwill while I'm at home, and particularly since my sister has found some good stuff at this location. Listened to Susan F.'s advice on parking -- the lot was practically empty when we went, so there were no issues there. It was such a relief considering street parking in Waialae is a nightmare. I like how the store is organized. The women's section is the biggest, so good for us I suppose. There were several red blazers, but they were huge/oversized, so I had no luck there. I wish I did though, because $6.99 is a steal! I did spot several books that I was interested in, but decided against them only since I wasn't sure I'd have room in my suitcase going back to school. The books are in excellent condition. The dressing rooms are okay. My sister said it smelled of urine in hers (yikes), but mine didn't. My allergies flared up while browsing -- probably due to the dust. A runny nose didn't enhance the shopping experience. Note to self: bring tissues next time. I would come again to kill time or if I was looking for something in particular. College students get 20% off on Sundays when you show your I.D.! read more

At the suggestion of the Professor at parking, I Went here and got some odds and ends for my extended stay on Oahu. The place is very clean and I found everything I needed and more. Prices were excellent. My only complaint is that it was painfully hot in there. read more

If you need a hawaiian shirt, this is the place. Unlike the other goodwills, that have a conservative collection of aloha shirts, these guys go all out. The first time i went here, they had at least three racks of pure aloha ...shirts. The people that work here are nice, and they have decent work rags here. read more

Bad experience: Tried to donate a like new Graco Bassinet slider at 5:58pm today. The Goodwill sliding bay entrance was shut already but, I could hear the employees were moving around inside. I placed it next to the bay entrance. An employee easy to identify by the facial tattoos, bandanna pulled over the head, dialed down pupils, and nervous shake approached quickly from the store entrance yelling that I was making his job harder (I couldn't understand most of what he was saying, he was so out of control). He tossed the donation into the street and told me to drop it back off during business hours. I told him "Calm down, why don't you just take it back inside with you". He went back to uttering angrily that I was making his job harder, and started taking photos of me and my vehicle. Creepy. I picked up the now "not" like new bassinet from the street, put it in my SUV and left that completely disappointing situation. I should have sold it on Craig's List. I will never donate at that Goodwill again. Poorly managed/ trained employees. read more

HOLY STREET FASHION BATMAN, look at those STORE WINDOWS! Best window display by a clothing establishment on island. Bar nuttin'. I mean...did you SEE the LEGOs used as lace on one of the dresses/skirts? Those 2 mannequins are more fashion forward than most Friday night club kids in the HNL. There's a very talented dresser/stylist hiding among the staff here. Plus: GREAT finds. Go to the window on the Diamond-Head side, near the street, for BRAND NEW clothes from Target, such as Mossimo and Merona. I found an unused-looking BABYPHAT faux-leather (pleather?) jacket, to die, here, in XL, li'l small for me, but DAMN. Cousin got an apricot colored KIPLING hobo bag for $9. I scarfed down...a bee-and-honeycomb-themed, black scarf, for practically nothing. This is the cuz's hidden hunting ground; she thrifts, she scores. Yelp 31 Challenge: 23/31 Looking for some items to decorate my new abode, I have been on a mission to find some unique items. I dont want to call it a mission to find things "shabby chic" but I am definitely taking my time to find pieces that are unique to tastes and style sense. Having said that, Goodwill has been a spot for me to check out along my pursuit of all things ecclectic and unique. Not really having a lot of luck in that sense yet but I am finding a few really cool things to look at and keep me entertained. I think what makes this location different from many of the rest is the fact that they offer a pretty extensive collection of handbags and clothing. Found quite a few boho tops that seemed really cute and DEFINTELY affordable. Given their practically brand new condition, everything I saw was more than tempting to say the least. Wish that they had a few more furniture pieces but the did have a nice selection of lamps and other knick knack decor items that I think might make nice additions to my new home. So much stuff! Located conveniently on waialae with some street parking. Lots of clothing, some kitchen stuff, purses and media. Just a lot to look at. They use the color system of the plastic tag to get extra percentage off on whichever color is special. I just found out they have a rewards card to get 5% back! When I am in the area, I try to go to this Goodwill and see what kinds of hidden treasures they have. They usually have a couple of nice kitchen plates or pyrex dishes.. the clear glass ones. When I was pregnant and the tummy was going crazy, I was also able to find couple of nice shorts and dresses that helped me feel kind of cute even though I felt HUGE. It is one of those places where if you have the time, it is fun to search around and look for those treasures. If you are also getting rid of things, they accept donation at this location. read more

This is one of my favorite thrift stores on O'ahu but please do not rush there and ruin it for the rest of us :) Their selection is good for womens' clothing, purses, books, knick knacks, furniture, dish ware, etc at AFFORDABLE prices. There is one public restroom in the back of the store which is a plus. They do not make you ask to use the restroom as though you are four years old. Just make sure you do not take any merchandise in with you and you are fine. Dressing rooms are spacious though untidy at times but the AFFORDABLE prices make it worth while. have always been Goodwill fan. This goodwill parking kind of can get tricky. They have reserved numbers I often forget what numbers are reserved. Luckily find street parking most times. I use my discount card at this visit and was shocked to see that I had earned $7 from previous shopping which was very exciting. I went in finding an awesome game for family game night. My BF went with me this visit and the cashiers were very helpful in signing him up for a rewards card also. I like finding a good deal and I like donating to the community. Goodwill has always been a great program that hires people with special needs. i'll skip the cliche "one man's trash" intro and settle for OMAHGERD RICH PEOPLE'S SECONDS! there's always a ton of new stuff, and i've scored some great items. i don't spend a lot of time looking through every rack, so i'm sure i could've gotten a lot more but that's not my thing. i haven't donated to this location since it's not the closest to our house, but i have heard that they turn stuff away...like a bag of clothes without even looking at them? sounds like my caterkids experience, so i won't risk ruining this place over that and i'll donate to another goodwill. read more

I like going to this goodwill even though Its a little drive from where i live. I love getting good deals and this is the place. My friend found a huge 10.00 fake banana tree here and i have found misc. items that have come in handy. They have more items for the house than the one on Beretania and the staff has always been friendly. I will continue to shop here for deals! read more

We bought a desk and returned to load it into the car but they sold it to someone else after they already sold it to us. They didn't even try to contact the 2nd person they sold it to so that we could get it back. Indian givers. Don't waste your time going there as you have to pay for parking and you never know if they will sell something out from under you that you already purchased. read more

My vintage-loving friend turned me on to this particular Goodwill location. Because this is close to the Kahala area, she explained, the Waialae Ave. Goodwill often has great brand name stuff (amongst all the other typical second hand goods). I'm not saying that you're gonna find a Louis Vuitton handbag everytime you go there, but come often enough and you'll surely find something to your liking. read more

Their Dell program allows you to drop off old computers. This is a good program and I take advantage of it.

This goodwill is among the biggest on the island. It definitely seems to be the best-stocked. The clothing is very well organized and I almost never have to struggle to find what I'm looking for. They also have a wide selection of household goods, books, records, toys etc. The staff is capable and friendly. The men's selection is great, and the women's clothing section seems even better. This is hands-down my go-to thrift shop in town. read more
