This place is like nails to a chalkboard. The gentleman and woman running the store this past…read moreweekend were unbelievably cringe, nosey and pushy. I was having a private QUIET whispering conversation with my fiancé about items in the store and seeing which one he liked for a set of earrings. The man behind the counter chimes into said conversation by saying, "yeah that piece is so nice" Annoyed--so i put back the earring and proceed to the small display of rings. just staring at them. He again says" we have that moonstone ring over here as well in other colors and in gold and in many sizes--he kept pushing and pushing the item no matter what angle you said that you weren't interested or were looking for something different. Again we move to another part of the store and the woman hollers out for us to go up stairs and how amazing it is up there. 'I reply, we've already been up stairs" This was our cue to leave. I'm sorry -- THIS IS NOT CUSTOMER SERVICE. you're trying wayyyy to hard to be something you're not. Leave the hippy bit for someone else. We're locals and don't need you passive aggressively trying to sell us the same sterling silver junk and chotsky trinkets that have been in your store for ages. If we needed help, we would ask.

Don't waste your time driving here if you're interested in any of the rare or collectible books…read moreshown on their website. I collect rare books, first editions, signed books, and other collectible editions. After browsing this store's website, I was excited to visit because I saw several books that were on my want list. I made a 90-minute drive on my day off and arrived with cash in hand, fully prepared to purchase several books. Only after arriving did I learn that none of the rare or valuable books shown on the website are actually kept in the store. Apparently, anything rare or valuable is removed from the shop and stored at the owner's home. There is no clear warning about this on the website. The books are individually photographed and presented as the store's inventory, so naturally I assumed I would actually be able to see them when visiting the store. I essentially drove 90 minutes for nothing. I've visited hundreds of bookstores across the country and have never encountered anything quite like this. The entire concept is baffling to me. If I'm considering spending hundreds or thousands of dollars on a rare book, I want to see the actual book. I want to examine the dust jacket, check the boards, look at the pages, and judge the overall eye appeal of that particular copy. That's a huge part of buying collectible books and, frankly, one of the primary reasons to visit a physical bookstore rather than simply ordering online. A bookstore advertising rare books that customers apparently cannot actually see at the bookstore is absurd. At the absolute minimum, the website should clearly and prominently state that the rare and collectible inventory shown online is stored off-site and is not available for viewing at the store. Had that been disclosed, I obviously would not have wasted three hours of my day making the round trip. The store itself is fine if you're looking for ordinary used books. But if you're a serious collector who saw something on their website and is considering making a trip to see it in person, don't bother unless you call ahead and confirm that the book will actually be there.

We were in the back and looking at the kids stuff for our nephews when I saw a kids shirt that I thought was adorable and reasonably priced. However, I wanted to look the manufacturer and took out my phone. Right when i took my phone out - before I had even unlocked it - the women managing the store came up to me and asked me what I was doing. I distractedly explained that I was just looking up the company that made the shirt and before I could think much about the question she said "So, you're not interested in purchasing it?" Before I could even respond - particularly because I was confused by the question since I WAS interested - she literally grabbed the shirt out of my hand and hung it back up. I was honestly in a state of shock and my friend, who was horrified, and I left immediately. I was most likely going to purchase that shirt and my friend and I had even talked about how we needed to come back. The experience I had today was so off-putting and surreal that I will be sure to never go back. And others should be aware.

Alexander's Pottery store is on my favorite stretch of Bearskin Neck, and kind of easy to walk by…read moresince the outside of the store really doesn't stand out. Inside though, the merchandise is really nice and unique. Obviously, all sorts of pottery pieces, and other decorative pieces by local artists. Knick knacks abound, and there's also some CDs and jewelry. Prices are aimed at tourists who want to buy a special piece of pottery crafted in Rockport. Local people won't buy their pottery at a place like Alexander's. Most shops in Rockport are like this: jacked up prices so a tourist can buy a "special" piece that people who live here know better than to buy. That being said, it is a pretty cool shop for browsing. I can't say I've ever purchased anything there. They have plenty of customers though, and the clerk is always friendly, if not a bit stand-offish. Be sure to pop in and look around.
