Inside though, the merchandise is really nice and unique. Obviously, all sorts of pottery pieces, and other decorative pieces by local artists. Knick knacks abound, and there's also some CDs and jewelry. Prices are aimed at tourists who want to buy a special piece of pottery crafted in Rockport. Local people won't buy their pottery at a place like Alexander's. Most shops in Rockport are like this: jacked up prices so a tourist can buy a "special" piece that people who live here know better than to buy. That being said, it is a pretty cool shop for browsing. I can't say I've ever purchased anything there. They have plenty of customers though, and the clerk is always friendly, if not a bit stand-offish. Be sure to pop in and look around.

The stores are pretty much mirror images, and sometimes only one location is open. I love browsing the "kitchen" items at Artesano's! Things like plastic fruits to hang on your walls and the death themed Mexican figurines. Particularly chilling is the pregnant skeleton person. There are a lot of unique items, however, they aren't hand-made. I've seen similar items in similarly themed stores all over New Hampshire and Massachusetts. They may be "unique" but they are definitely mass produced. The jewelry is always cute. I have bought a few pairs of earrings. My favorite are the crocheted flower earrings that they offer in abundance. Some of the bracelets are cheaply made though and will break if you wear them too often or hit your wrist against a hard enough surface. The prices are normal for Rockport, but still kind of high. I don't want to spend almost $20 for hand-painted plastic peppers to hang on my wall. The jewelry is priced reasonably, as are the popular clothes from Nepal. Be aware that sizes in Nepal are vastly smaller than they are here. My poor boyfriend is an average sized guy and had to buy a triple x large jacket, and that's a snug fit! Artesano's is a nice break from the usual tourist traps with their nautical themed items at inflated prices so be sure to go in and browse if you're in Rockport. You may find some cute items, and some good bargains!

If you're in town for the day and forgot your Moleskine, you can grab yet another here. The other half of the shop is full of really cool, non mass-market toys. Small producers and European makers offer a really unique selection of toys of all sizes for babies and kids. The shop is well-thought out and comfortable to visit and completely dangerous if you happen to have a thing for paper goods, like me!

I stepped into this special space and told the older gentleman what I was looking for. He was so kind and opened every case for me to try rings on while I had my son in his infant carrier. He made me laugh and out me at ease. I kept apologizing for trying on every ring because I wanted to find "the one." It didn't end up being at this store but I would go back and certainly send folks his way! What a kind soul with a beautiful collection of jewels. Get your booty there ASAP!

I was having a private QUIET whispering conversation with my fiancé about items in the store and seeing which one he liked for a set of earrings. The man behind the counter chimes into said conversation by saying, "yeah that piece is so nice" Annoyed--so i put back the earring and proceed to the small display of rings. just staring at them. He again says" we have that moonstone ring over here as well in other colors and in gold and in many sizes--he kept pushing and pushing the item no matter what angle you said that you weren't interested or were looking for something different. Again we move to another part of the store and the woman hollers out for us to go up stairs and how amazing it is up there. 'I reply, we've already been up stairs" This was our cue to leave. I'm sorry -- THIS IS NOT CUSTOMER SERVICE. you're trying wayyyy to hard to be something you're not. Leave the hippy bit for someone else. We're locals and don't need you passive aggressively trying to sell us the same sterling silver junk and chotsky trinkets that have been in your store for ages. If we needed help, we would ask.
