This place is like nails to a chalkboard. The gentleman and woman running the store this past weekend were unbelievably cringe, nosey and pushy. I was having a private QUIET whispering conversation with my fiancé about items in the store and seeing which one he liked for a set of earrings. The man behind the counter chimes into said conversation by saying, "yeah that piece is so nice" Annoyed--so i put back the earring and proceed to the small display of rings. just staring at them. He again says" we have that moonstone ring over here as well in other colors and in gold and in many sizes--he kept pushing and pushing the item no matter what angle you said that you weren't interested or were looking for something different. Again we move to another part of the store and the woman hollers out for us to go up stairs and how amazing it is up there. 'I reply, we've already been up stairs" This was our cue to leave. I'm sorry -- THIS IS NOT CUSTOMER SERVICE. you're trying wayyyy to hard to be something you're not. Leave the hippy bit for someone else. We're locals and don't need you passive aggressively trying to sell us the same sterling silver junk and chotsky trinkets that have been in your store for ages. We love the girl, Karen, she's always sweet, helpful, nice and informative. The male owner, however, needs to take a class in psych to learn that condescending is not good. The crazy hair color girl is always weird and creepy too. We don't like to shop while she is around either. We go to Rockport and Gloucester often. We will not be buying from anyone who brags, boasts and acts snooty or pushy. Keep your attitude! Please give us space. Don't pressure us to buy things we do not need. Extremely overpriced, double, tripled or quadrupled in price. The items are low quality exports from East Asia, most likely not free trade. The Floating Lotus sews their own labels in. If you have ever been to East Asia and walk into this store and see the prices and watch their gimic it's horrifying. read more

I was happy to see this newly opened store on Bearskin Neck during a recent trip to Rockport. There's a very interesting mix of stalwart stores (like the Chinese collectible stores and the very pricey jewelry stores) and newer, more progressive and much more interesting stores like Floating Lotus. It's a welcome change- and I hope the trend continues! There are only so many uber expensive art galleries and equally expensive jewelry stores that one little downtown can support, and it's good to see some more color and newer ideas as a shopper. I found the atmosphere of Floating Lotus extremely relaxing; I'm assuming this is by design. The music was nice, and one of the store keepers demonstrated how to play the metal bowl for us. In fact, both employees were incredibly friendly, but never intrusive as we were left pretty much alone to browse. On the way out, I saw one of the employees very patiently explaining Indian jewelry to a woman- very easy going, and not in a rush to have you buy something or get going like most shops in Rockport. The prices were reasonable. Imported merchandise is not going to be cheap, especially when it's good quality like what is featured at Floating Lotus. We were lucky and there was a 50% off sale on clothing going on. My boyfriend got a very crazy green jacket from Nepal (complete with what I now call the elf hood due to its shape) and I bought a nice shirt. There is an upstairs that features collectibles, instruments, and fabrics. They had the neatest set of dolls, in a couple of different patterns. If I were a doll person, I would definitely have purchased a pair! The price was fantastic for high quality work! I found the whole experience very soothing. It was a nice break from the hectic pace of Bearskin neck where on warmer days you have so many tourists that there are mobs to get into shops. I hope the Floating Lotus does well and thrives in Rockport, and helps to usher in more stores that have a theme and value good employees over just bilking tourists! If you're in Rockport, make it a point to check out this store and I promise you'll come away feeling better than you did when you walked through the door (and maybe with some nice Indian garments!). read more

A great cute lil shop! they've got just about everything you'd ever need here! singing bowls, incense, clothing, cusions and rugs galore! i bought a beautiful turquoise and amethyst ring which was a bit pricy ($25) but resonable for the quality. i also bought some tibetian prayer flags which were great quality , but do have a strong smell that is filling my room now. the staff was knoledgable and friendly. you MUST stop in here when you're in rockport! read more

Strangely, or maybe not so strangely, "The Neck" of Rockport has evolved into a kind of subdued shakedown street. About 50% of the storefronts are occupied by business savvy new-agers peddling boho garb and collectibles. I guess this makes sense given the inherited legacy of the "art colony" and that coastlines are real hippie-magnets. Floating Lotus offers the best of the "neck" in my opinion --clothing, accessories, and house accoutrements from India and Thailand. In my younger pot-smoking days I once had the "importer dream" where I imagined my life would be one big vacation. Well, looks like the Floating Lotus folks are living that dream and have set up shop in Rockport of all places! Their two story shop is rich with colorful textiles and beaded accessories. The buyers have good taste and set their prices reasonably, considering Rockport is such a tourist destination. I bought two handbags. One was a fair trade one from a women's weaving collective ($57) and the other was a straight up cheap but pretty silk one ($10). I would have bought scarves and jewelry too, but my x-metalhead bf was giving me that look. read more

Prices are fairly reasonable for imported goods. The employers will tell you anything you want to know about the products and will work with you on larger purchases. I love the Floating Lotus stores. Walk in and you're in another world. Lots of beautiful clothing, jewelry, instruments, and items sourced from around the world through the owners travels, and personal designs. The staff are very knowledgeable and kind. They also do sound healing and alternative workshops that I've found personally helpful and transformative. Definitely worth checking out the stores during your travels! read more

Such a beautiful store, filled with Indian themes. I love the collections of clothes, jewelry, and even instruments. I mean these people sell SITARS! ( and I believe give lessons) The staff is pretty helpful and nice, but this place is very expensive, so I would bring some money... I just walked into this gorgeous, warm, intoxicating Gloucester store after working across the street from it for a year. The owners, Justin and his beautiful wife, were so warm and welcoming, and he took the time to explain the origins of some of the beautiful handmade pieces in the store. The space is gorgeous, and you don't want to leave... you want to find a cup of tea and a giant pillow and check out all the amazing musical instruments and textiles. The sterling collection is stunning, and I walked out with a beautiful moonstone ring and a handmade lantern and a long list of things I want to go back for. And a huge smile. Nice store with a lot of variety across jewelry, clothing and decorative home items. Sometimes the sales people, specifically the woman I believe who is the owner, can make you feel uncomfortable as I feel like I am being followed around, particularly if I go upstairs. Despite having shopped there over the years, and being a 40 year Rockport visitor (which she clearly would not know), I feel as if the owner is uneasy when dealing with me as if she thinks I am going to steal something. This energy makes an honest shopper feel bad particularly one who is a paying and good person. read more

This has been one of my all time favorite stores for years. I finally made it back today with my boyfriend (it was his first trip!), and we're still in a good mood from it. Going to this place is pretty much spending time in a beautiful temple with beautiful spirits. I got a new bag...their purses are made with recycled saris and wraps from other countries, everything is beautiful and fair trade. We were treated to hearing a metal drum being played upstairs, it was so relaxing and blissful. My bf got a dream catcher for his daughter. We will definitely be back. read more

I use to love this store and would drive to rockport from Boston just to go. I recently went and spent a lot of money on a ring which the guy there told me was 14k gold. The gold ring is now silver I can't believe he would lie to make a sale. This really doesn't seem like a place that would do this. I now will never shop here again and I am going to tell all of my friends who love and trust this store about this. read more

Floating Lotus is a must see in Rockport. There is an amazing array of musical instruments and many singing bowls. The shop owner is very well educated and loves sharing his enjoyment of the instruments with shoppers. He is very generous with his time and has some gorgeous antique singing bowls he demonstrates. There are also beautiful home furnishings - lovely cushions, wall hangings, and more. It is a delightful shop to duck into and explore! read more

A great local find. We were in the area and since I am from India I thought to check out the store to see how 'authentic' it is. To my surprise it is really a great store having such a good and latest collection. Usually the stores which keeps items from India are pretty sad and never have latest and fresh stock. Floating lotus on the other hand has such a large collection of items from Asia. I ended up buying a few things and was really tempted to buy some more! Definitely a great store to check out if you are in the area. Also the owner and staff is great and very helping. The whole environment is zen. Don't miss it! read more

Just moments ago my fiancee and I were walking around Bearskin Neck shopping in the few stores that were open towards closing time on a cold, rainy, windy Saturday in April. When we first approached the Floating Lotus I was somewhat excited as to what jewelry I might find inside for myself, or what gifts might be had for friends. Immediately we were greeted by the male shopkeeper/presumed owner and from the get-go I could tell this was not the shop for me. While the overall products the store provided looked great, the shopkeeper's attitude was enough to detract from the experience. He followed us room to room with that sense he was afraid we might steal something. He also felt the urge to explain to us several times he was a fair trade store and what that meant, as if we have never heard of this term before or its implications to the global community. The final straw for me was when my fiancee and I checked out the upstairs section, upon the shopkeepers suggestion, he followed up on us a few minutes later only to tell me that photographs were not allowed upstairs. While I can respect a shopkeeper's wish for such actions, he was borderline rude. I didn't go into explaining to him that the photographs (of Sitars) were to be given to a musician friend who would be visiting the area soon (a potential sale). He then once again explained that he was a fair trade store and gave yet another explanation as to what that means. While the products are of good quality and look nice, I could have done without a rude lecture from someone who doesn't know my background. Talk about karma. read more

Two of my other Chinese friends and I walked into Floating Lotus last weekend after spending some time on the beach near Rockport. The first question the male shopkeeper (Justin, I believe) was "are you guys from China?" Despite the fact that we have lived and worked in the US for a long time, we didn't think we needed to hide anything. As soon as he confirmed that we were from China, he started to lecture us with a condescending tone "I don't know if you guys in YOUR country understand Fair Trade, but the stuff we sell here are all Fair Trade... you know, helping those people in Tibet, Nepal being driven off their homeland to make a living..." I was shocked by his unjustified hostility towards us. I came to the US when I was a kid, became a citizen, and have spent most my life in the US. I am an active social justice advocate, including helping improve living and education conditions of children in rural Xinjiang area and providing education and work force opportunities in inner cities in the US. Simply because we came from China (even though long time ago) does not mean we support all of Chinese government's policies. This is like assuming every single American supports invading Iraq and refusing to sign the Kyoto Protocol simply because that was the US government official stand. I cannot believe a self-proclaimed supporter of Fair Trade would discriminate against other people solely based on national origin. That by default, makes you morally inferior, not superior. read more

I love the Floating Lotus. It is so nice to have a beautiful local Indian store. My style's really eclectic and bohemian so it's nice to find things down town that I like. All of the items in the store are fair trade and a lot fo them are crafted by local artisans in several countries including India and Thailand. The married couple that own the store are so nice and the husband Jason? can play almost all of the amazing instruments in the shop that he imported from India. He is really sweet and one time when I was younger, I really wanted this beautiful pink mulberry paper floor lamp he had but I couldn't afford it so he gave it too me half off. I'm very picky about purses but my favorite purse came from there. They have some fantastic rare pieces if you have the money or just want to look. The other day Jason showed me this antique prayer necklace that was from Nepal. It was one of the most beautiful and ornate necklaces I've ever seen. I also heard Jason talking on the phone to a man interested in buying a blue antique glass Buddha that Jason had bought from someone on the side of the road who'd gotten it from a temple excavation site in Bangkok. read more

We visited Rockport this past week end and I loved the Floating Lotus. Great products at great prices. I found an awesome unique jacket marked down from $106 to $68!! What a deal but it only got better...when I went to pay for it the very friendly clerk told me it was half off. SO- I bought this amazing jacket that I would gladly have paid $106 for- for $34!! I also found a great purse and that was also on sale. From now on The Floating Lotus will be my first stop in Rockport! read more

let me first start by saying -- The Floating Lotus has, since it's opening, been one of my absolute FAVOURITE stores on Bearskin Neck; I love their merchandise, their staff have always been very friendly, helpful, and, informative (or so I thought...) this rather negative review is based on my most recent purchase there, about 2-3 weeks ago. I purchased a pair of earrings, a pair of earrings which were sold to me as "genuine all natural purple turquoise earrings, mined and handmade in Northern India;" I had never before heard of this phenomena (purple turquoise), and so it was subsequently quite assuredly explained to me that "turquoise naturally turns purple when it becomes heated to a temperature of at least 30000 degrees under the Earth's surface; it is much more rare than the standard blue turquoise, or even green turquoise (of which we have a wide selection as you can see here, if you happen to be interested), which only requires a temperature of 10000° to undergo it's colour change. isn't it beautiful?" WELL. I am QUITE disappointed in this shop, which purports to exclusively support fair trade, and sell unique handmade and antique items, mainly originating from southeastern Asia, and seems as well to have a nice little backstory to go w/ practically every single item in the place ...perhaps I'm just a bit cynical, but this recent situation w/ them has began to make me doubt EVERY claim they make about what they're selling. Because I did some research, being someone of a perpetually curious mind and wanting to learn more about purple turquoise and turquoise in general after my interest had been sparked by my new jewelry acquisition, and I found that there is most decidedly NO SUCH THING as purple turquoise, or green turquoise for that matter. At least not in nature. What I purchased from The Floating Lotus in Rockport, MA (they also have a location in downtown Gloucester), for $65 (SIXTY-FIVE DOLLARS, I'm sure they're hardly worth even half that, MAYbe, and I will note that a virtually identical pair was simultaneously for sale at The Village Silversmith down the Neck for $55), is a pair of ARTIFICIALLY COLOURED, COMPOSITE TURQUOISE earrings. did the employee who provided the information and assured me that these stones were "genuine, naturally purple turquoise" KNOW that she was being deceptive? maybe. maybe not. perhaps she was provided this information to help encourage people to purchase by her employer, who did in fact know better, and genuinely believed it. perhaps her employer themself was provided w/ the information by the original retailer of the jewelry, and didn't bother to check their facts. or for all one knows, they all could be in on the fradulent marketing ploy. it doesn't really matter all that much. I do suggest though, that should anyone trying to sell you something offer up some bit of information that would seem to make the item in question more valuable/rare/interesting/exotic/etc -- if it is possible to do so, do a quick fact check on your phone! it could save you a headache in the future. the earrings are pretty. I just wish that they were what I was told they were. read more
