Is this place under new management? I tried it recently and was pleasantly surprised. This place has been a centreville staple for over a decade, maybe even two. At its peak, it was the best- comfort Korean food during late nights/ early mornings, but at some point they fell off. Hard. The last time I dined here was ten years ago and that experience was so bad, I stopped coming (speaking solely to food. I never expect stellar service at homey Korean spots). And with the addition of Yi's Traditional Noodle, my family never bothered to try Gom again. Someone ordered for my family via Uber Eats: seollongtang, Galbitang, yukgaejang, o Sam bokkeum (pork belly and squid stir fry). All good!! It came with 4 servings of rice, 3 sides of kimchi, and salt/ green onions for seollongtang. Galbitang had generous amount of beef. The broth was flavorful, and had long- simmered richness. It leaves your lips lacquered with beef oil. *I later looked at the menu online and they advertise it as wang Galbitang- wang meaning king or huge. Expect a decent portion. For $21.99 I thought it was reasonable. Hankki (down the street) also offers Galbitang but for $18 their amount of beef is a little disappointing. Yukgaejang (spicy shredded beef stew) is a little oilier than I like but it was also flavorful and full of beef. Seollongtang- I didn't try it but my persnickety seol long tang snob dad said it was good. This dish is what Korean people used to flock here for and also what led to their downfall for not preparing it correctly or having repeat bad experiences. I guess they're making a comeback because my dad loved the beef and rich bone broth. Osam bokkeum- also a little oilier than I like but still good. Flavorful. Pork and squid were tender. You can adjust the spice level on this. The only complaint we had was the kimchi was a little too sour/ fermented. Honestly kimchi has to be delicious at seollongtang places. Still really good overall. I took a peak at their menu and it does seem to have some revamping going on. Their newest addition- variations of steamed meat- jokbal (pig feet), bossam (pork), sooyuk (beef), etc. +pyunbaek namoo jjim. It's meat prepared by steaming it in pyunbaek (hinoki cypress) wood. Apparently it's really aromatic and has added health benefits. I'm curious about how this compares to their old bossam. Service used to be hit or miss. Homey Korean spots aren't usually known for service. You're kinda on your own. If the food is good enough people will come back (hot take for some). Yi's is still my preferred place for seollongtang, but I'd gladly come back to Gom, esp for galbitang. Gom Tang, welcome back. Centreville is happy to have you again!! read more

Dinner at Gomtaengi has become a bit pricey for me, so I've been going more for lunch. They offer several lunch dishes for around $10, which is a great deal. As a regular, here are a few tips: the $10 lunch menu is dine-in only--you can't order it to-go, and takeout has to be at dinner pricing (a bit unfortunate). Also, except for the seolleongtang, most dishes are pre-cooked and reheated, so I recommend asking them to make it piping hot; otherwise, some parts might still be a bit cold. Lunch is served from 11:30 AM to 3 PM, but it's not available on holidays--also a bit of a downside. On the plus side, the servers are always very kind, and sometimes during lunch they serve an extra side dish in addition to kimchi. The stir-fried fish cake (odeng bokkeum) is especially delicious. Tried Gom Tang E for the first time and loved it! I had yukgaejang which was OK, with generous portions. Husband ordered some bone broth soup and I actually thought his was better. The banchan was fresh and tasty, and everything came out hot and fast. I surprisingly LOVED their pickled radish (깍두기), I dare say - the favorite dish of the day haha. It's seriously so good!!!!!! This place was just SO good. We pulled up to this place approaching 9pm. This is gonna sound weird but- it was very authentically Korean ambiance. Like as soon as you walk in, you're greeted from across the room and seated. Reminded me of my own home country! There was plentyyyy of seating and an extensive authentically Korean menu- like there was no fries on this thing. There were burners on the table for stews I'm assuming. Our food came out in sensible timing and was SO HOT AND SO GOOD. Perfectly seasoned (like so good) and a wonderful sizeable portion. We came here 2 days ago. The food was okay, but unfortunately the service was not good at all. We arrived around 8:45 PM. When we asked for 4 bowls to share a soup, the server seemed to have an attitude about it. Later, I tried to ask for a cup of tea, but she completely ignored us. Maybe she was busy at the time, but about 20 minutes went by before she came back to check on customers. At that point, we also wanted to place a to-go order, but instead of taking our order, she just walked away. When we received the check, we decided not to leave a high tip because of the service we experienced. The server then came back and told us that we couldn't do that. The restaurant feels cozy and well visited. There was a huge boiling pot with some sort of liquid behind a huge glass. I thought it was cool. The lady who sat me and took my order was very nice. I ordered a kimchi stew and I asked what was in it. She told me that it had tofu and pork. So I asked if she could replace the tofu with soft tofu-she seemed reluctant and said she would. When I received my soup, it was kimchi heavy, very little pork and ok tofu. So I guess it wasn't equal proportions. I give it 4 stars because, although it was ok it wasn't my favorite. The place was gorgeously decorated! Even though it was 11pm, the place was packed. The restaurant is open 24/7 and the smell of cooking food hits you once you walk in. The waiting staff is nice but they speak minimal English. Bone broth with tendon: it wasn't for me. There isn't much flavor with bone broth but there was a lot of tendon! I was hoping for some dipping sauce with the tendon but there was none. I tried adding salt and pepper but the salt was a bit chunky and much more salty than table salt. I liked that it came with a side of rice and had noodles in it. 4/10 Braised beef: this was really good! Full of flavor and had veggies, rice cake, noodles, and plenty of tender meat. 9/10 The kimchi had a much more sour flavor than other kimchi I've had and I wasn't a huge fan. I did like the pickled radish though. I'm not sure if it was a misunderstanding but the server told me I couldn't take the left over kimchi home but then later gave me a takeout box for it. I love how this is 24/7. It's like a wall in hole and been around for a while. It's this old Korean grandma that served us. It's very cozy. They have this big soup bowl that they stir and make sure to scoop out the fat. They serve their food with msg. We got kimchi jjigae it wasn't the best but it was pretty good. The ox tail soup (wang galbi tang) you eat with putting salt and black pepper and rice and kimchi in it. We discovered Gom Tang E after seeing someone post a reel about them on Instagram, and the gigantic broth pot immediately caught our attention. We decided to check it out, and it quickly became one of our favorite places for soup and the boxed steamed pork set. Their Wang Galbi Tang is hands down the best! It's an absolute must-have every time we come here--rich, flavorful, and just so comforting. We come here pretty often now because it's become our go-to spot for comfort food with friends. The only thing I'm not a fan of is their seafood pancake--especially since I've tried Yi's Traditional Korean Soup's seafood pancake, which I prefer. The seafood pancake was hot and it tasted okay with lots of seafood, that was my favorite part of this meal. We ordered some cold noodles and beef broth soup. This is the traditional beef broth soup so it is BLAND (note for those 1st timers trying korean traditional soup). They do have salt and pepper for you to seasoned yourself. The intestine, and beef tripe still have a strong smell to it. I didn't like it much because of the strong smell. The cold noodles was good. Large bowl and lots of pickled radish. Seasoned right too. At the end of the meal, my brother gave some cash to pay and as the lady walked back to the register, he was half way pulling out more cash for tips while waiting for change. The server came back to the table asking us so theres only $4 for tips and demanded more tips. We were telling her we are in the middle of pulling iut more cash to tips. The pork neck soup at Gom Tang E is another one of those unique tastes that you must experience to understand. I couldn't compare it to anything else and to give you a nice analogy to help you get it. You just have to try it if you haven't. I brought a few friends here just for that purpose. I tried other stuff on their menu but nothing else clicked like the pork neck soup. The seafood pancake maybe my second favorite. This soup is constantly cooked in a giant pot (like a 4-foot diameter pot). The meat is so tender from this slow, constant cooking and the spices in this soup just make your soul feel good. Because it's on the giant pot for 24 hours, it comes out quickly too. Not to mention the staff works fast. With Korean staff, mostly Korean customers, and decor, it feels like you're in Korea. We got the Somuri gookbap, Seol Leong Tang, and Budae Jigae. The budae jigae was the best of the three soups. The stew is thick and had great flavor. There was pork slices, spam, and ramyeon. The food was simply amazing. Our crew of eight adults and five small kids feasted until we couldn't eat anymore. The bill was $296 post tip (18% was automatic. For $74 per family -- $37 per adult -- was very reasonably priced for the current market and the generous portions! We had the seafood + tofu hot pot, the big oxtail pot that served three, two small beef soups, a beef tongue + beef tendon box, a seafood pancake, fried dumplings, and a spicy stir fry of squid and pork. Every dish that I listed was a hit with the crew! Let me repeat that: EVERY DISH WAS A HIT! The restaurant is small and crowded. Due to the small spaces, any movement by the busboys and waiters intensified the claustrophobic feelings. I would heavily advise going here if your group is over 6 people (kids are included in the count). I would also advise going here if you care about the quality of service. How can you go wrong with a 24 hour joint in this area? If I don't have to trek to Annandale for Korean food, even better! The menu is solid here. I usually like smaller menus but this place does soups so well! Their kimchi is the perfect accompaniment to any of the soups but my favorite soup here is the sul lung tang. The bone broth is thick enough, creamy enough, and after you add your sea salt flakes and scallions, it's a soup that just makes you feel better. If you're dining in, you'll see those middle aged golfers fresh off the green slurping down their soup and soju, people one dates, and little families passing around their dishes to share. The service is quick and efficient enough. This is a Korean joint so don't expect Michelin level of service but they'll get the job done. Ambiance is nice enough.
