Disclaimer: 1. Only tried the food truck version, which I…read morehad for lunch today. 2. I really wanna give a 3.5, since it doesn't deserve a 4, but it's better than a 3. Friendly staff, easy ordering, though very small subset of the full offerings, with only 3 egg roll types available (the brick-and-mortar location has 16). These are smaller egg rolls, more along the lines of a Vietnamese egg roll or a mini version of a Chinese spring roll. Know going in that this isn't going to be something you'd get on an old school pupu platter. Also know that you gotta order in pairs that can't be mixed. So if getting two, it's two of the same kind. I found a trading buddy. Buffalo Chicken Egg Roll ($5 for 2): Soft, tender meat, a little dry, a little spicy. Served with a tiny container of blue cheese for dipping. Cheeseburger Egg Roll ($5 for 2): Soft, crumbly meat, good moisture, cheese melted in, good ratio of protein to shell. Served with a tiny container of ketchup for dipping. General Gau's Chicken ($16 for plate): Think McNuggets, with a similar size and flat shape, only higher quality. Moist. Batter not crisp at all, but when is it crisp even at a Chinese restaurant? Lacking in the sauce and flavor departments. More of a clear, thin glaze than a sauce, and needed more of it. Served with white rice and pickled cabbage. Solid portion.

Food and boba always 10/10. Quick and friendly service. Crab Rangoon eggrolls are always a fav…read more Tried the curry fried for the first time and they were so good!

    Chinatown

Nestled above the heart of Chinatown -- in what could be an artist's charming top floor studio loft…read more-- is My Thai Vegan Café, a modern veg take on traditional Thai dishes that feature an impressive array of shredded veggies and mock meats tossed into a wok. Here are some important distinctions to know for my fellow veg foodies: If you are the type of vegetarian who generally avoids Thai food because of the sneaking suspicion every dish has fish sauce, then this place is truly paradise. However, for people used to eating Thai food, it should be noted that this is not an authentic Thai eatery -- it is Vietnamese-owned with a Chinese staff, and I find that most of the dishes have a more traditional Vietnamese palate. I am writing this as a person who's consumed a lot of Thai food and couldn't help but make comparisons. The "fish sauce" is a combination of vinegar, chili sauce, and sugar--it works as a substitute and is generally offered as a side to garnish your main entrees, but those who eat Thai regularly will notice a subtle difference lacking in the pungent umami realm. The mock meats are either made with textured soy (chicken and beef), vital wheat gluten, or konjac root starch (same as shirataki noodles) for mock shrimp, which can have a gummy texture. For newcomers, the curries come highly recommended by staff, especially the mango yellow curry or pumpkin curry. Most tables also order the fried wonton appetizers and summer rolls. The wok noodles are a classic, but lack the same savoriness as traditional Thai eateries, I'd recommend the Pad Woon Sen plus, which comes with an assortment of mock shrimp, beef, tofu and chicken for just $1 more. I also tried the Tom Kha, which had a smooth coconut broth, but lacked herbal kick and tasted like it was missing the deep steep of lemongrass and galang root -- adding lime juice gave it a nice brightness and burst of flavor. Lots of reviews also recommend the birds nest, which is a fried nest of shredded taro with vegetables and protein inside. Do not order the Tom Yum, maybe it was an off day but the soup was a sodium bomb and couldn't be consumed. The restaurant is located up two flights of stairs in what feels like an intimidating, gritty stairwell tagged with graffiti. The space itself is warm and inviting though, decorated with lots of plants and string lights. The staff is friendly and attentive upon walking in and taking your order but then leaves you to enjoy your meal after serving. The dishes come in hot, large portions and every entree is plenty for two moderately hungry people. The pricing is fair, with most dishes between $15-25. I recommend going with a group and getting several items to share.
