a menu for a good morning

Riverside, NJ, is no longer the thriving Delaware River side town it was in the middle of the last century. Scott Avenue is still a wide expanse well designed for Independence and Veterans Day parades, but the storefronts on either side are now either boarded up or operating as low budget businesses working hard to survive in this dusty backwater now that its industrial base is gone. That is, except for the Golden River Restaurant. Their building has been standing for over one hundred years, taking many forms from drug store to early age department store and appliance outlet. Since about 1992 it has been a restaurant, most recently in its present form as a breakfast/lunch emporium. I stopped in after court in Mt. Holly to see what they had going on. It is a large room with booths and tables up front and an old lunch counter in back. It feels dated, yet comfortable - quietly fitting into the over the hill sensibility of Riverside itself. I took a stool at the counter and was immediately approached by a very friendly server offering Lacas Coffee and a menu. People were shorter a century ago, and I discovered that I could not fit my legs under the counter. I moved over to the end of the row where there was a bit more room due to warpage and a bent stool frame. Fit my 6' 4" fine there. I ordered their Greek Omelette with rye toast, and suggested the chef put the home fries inside the egg case along with the onions, peppers, mushrooms, sausage, feta and whatever else was in there. In the meantime I sipped my joe and chatted with my counter lady and other customers. Everyone was talkative and willing to share their thoughts. Cool! My breakfast was delicious and filling. The eggs were still wet enough to meld with its filling, allowing each element to speak in its own voice, yet harmonize perfectly together. It was definitely a case where the whole was greater than the sum of its parts. A splash of hot sauce completed the dish, adding a touch of heat to the rest of the opus. The rye had crunchy texture and sourness, exactly as I like. This was a strong candidate for omelette of the year. As I departed the chef/owner met me at the door to ask after my satisfaction. He was pleased with my reply. Turns out that he had spent years in Trenton and knew many of the same restaurants and lawyers from the capital city where my office is located. A pleasant surprise. I congratulated him on his success in Riverside, and reminded him that his employee at the counter deserved a raise. Hope she gets it.

The restaurant doesn't look to appealing when you walk in and sit down. The staff are very friendly. My mother in law mentioned that we did not order waffles and they bought complimentary waffles over. When we got our food we had what we ordered plus other sides that were appealing to us at no extra charge. What I did not like was the scrapple did not taste fresh and the syrup was cheap.

If you are ever in this area, don't overlook this little gem. Been here multiple times for breakfast while in town for car repair. Always seated immediately, staff super fast and friendly, food always as ordered. Menu regular breakfast fare. And it's CHEAP! Same breakfast at any diner in the area would be at least twice the price. They give you a whole carafe of coffee, as well. Don't normally give five stars, but I honestly can't think of one complaint. This review is for breakfast only, never had lunch or dinner.

Food and service was great. I love a good breakfast in a small diner. The homemade cream chipped beef was fantastic.

If you're looking for good food at a fair price then this is the spot. There's not a long wait at all either

As far as diner food goes Golden River never disappoints. Great service, a relaxed environment, this is exactly what I expect in a diner.

I ordered 4 rolls: Lump crab cake roll, sweet chili salmon roll, Caribbean jerk chicken roll, and General tso's chicken roll. I did a 3 roll combo and one roll order by itself. The combo came with fries and a drink. The rolls were all very good. My favorite was the lump crab cake roll. I would definitely come again.

So because it was my first time and fam was in town we decided to do them all. The chicken and beef cheesesteak, the crab, the salmon, the general tso's chicken, the jerk chicken. We also did the sweet combo rolls. We took our rolls and a couple of bottles of wine and headed to our god mother's to surprise here with a night of rolls and wine! It was a hit! She loved the salmon rolls, filled with tons of salmon and so tasty. I loved the beef cheesesteak, general tso's and the crab rolls. One thing about these rolls is they are packed with yummyness and perfectly crispy on the outside and not at all greasy. The dessert rolls were all amazing but those funnel fries were so good! Staff was super friendly and suggested some items and you can tell they love what they do, all smiles. Meer was super sweet and blessed us with the sauces which they have plenty to choose from can't name them all but my fave was the habanero one. I'm due to get back and get me some mo!!! Rolls and wine for the win!!!

Given the commotion of attempting a large party at…read moresuch a place on a Sunday evening, we came here today, as we always do, only for a special occasion. Waitlist via the app is recommended. We were ultimately waiting ~15-20 minutes from the time that we arrived on site since we had put ourselves on the wait list an hour prior. Staff is super friendly given all the incessant "is my table ready?" questions that they get from folks. Things are pretty packed here but we got a table, and were helped and served quickly, and checked on regularly. Our table got the usual: Cactus Blossom, ~6 baskets of bread over the course of the meal, and individual meals. We shared a 12 oz. ribeye w/ ribs combo. Today it was actually not as good as usual, a bit more medium rather than medium rare, and the ribs were dry on the outer half. However, still a completely filling and enjoyable meal all things considered. Pro-tip: put the last bits of your Cactus Blossom in a bun with both butter and sauce for a treat that is much more unhealthy and delicious than you bargained for. To boot, we asked the staff to put our celebrant on the saddle, even though we weren't celebrating his birthday, and they happily fulfilled our wish. Folks here love a good time, even though they are probably easily clocking 30K+ steps filling all their tables.

Steak, Rolls, and a Birthday Win!…read more We were heading from Philly back to NYC and wanted something out of the city, easy parking, and REAL food. Nothing beats a good steak and a roll. Add the fact that it was my boyfriend's birthday the following day and he loves a solid steak, Texas Roadhouse became the stop. They opened at 12:00. By 12:01, people were already seated. On a Sunday!!!! The locals knew what time it was, and that told me everything. We were greeted warmly, seated comfortably, and our waitress was an absolute gem attentive, kind, and on point from start to finish. Love love loved her! Even accommodated my birthday surprise for my boyfriend. But listen... Norm, the owner or manager (forgot the title but may be both ‍), deserves praise. That man was WORKING. Serving tables, slanging salads, running food, checking on guests. I have never seen an owner or manager that hands on in a franchise spot. Ever! Shout out to Norm because leadership like that shows. The staff were wearing "I love working here" shirts and you could see what a well oiled machine it was. They sang my boyfriend Happy Birthday without the saddle as requested by us, respected the vibe, and made it special. He demolished the buttery rolls and said the peanuts reminded him of home. You even get a birthday scoop! The ice cream was delish. Ribeye? Perfect. Salmon? Delicious. Beef tips with all the fixings? Hit. Loaded potato? LOADED. Great food, great energy, great service. This wasn't just a meal, it was a moment. If you're passing through and hungry, stop here.
