I will start with the phone was not working so I couldn't ring takeout; Buttt it was so nice to sip a refreshing cocktail while I waited to bring home a surprisingly perfect crafted burger. My girlfriend made reservations for 6:30 Sat night (5/13). When we arrived no one showed us to a table, the bartender said no reservations necessary so we chose a booth to sit it. The booth had dirty glasses and silverware. We waited 15 mins for our waitress, she never cleared the tables or returned with any menus. This place was chosen because of the positive reviews. Located next door to Cafe Madison and under the same ownership, this recently remodeled bar looks like a neighborhood pub: large square bar in the middle of the room ringed with tables and stained glass hanging lamps over each table. The TVs are aligned with mirrors on the wall, so you get a good view of the game. Good happy hour specials. They do have an outdoor seating area that was pretty swank. Not sure if they share it with Cafe Madison. I had the meatball sub (was lukewarm and tasted like frozen store-bought meatballs) and fries.My husband had the chicken steak sub. We stopped in for another try using the two'fer lunch coupon. Jeff the bartender was doing a good job waiting on the tables and a few people at the bar. We both got the Philly cheese steaks and I asked for very crispy fries. The fries were dark and perfect and the cheese steak was excellent. Before they blew up and became Cafe Madison next door, the space that is now Towne Tavern was the Madison Pub. I used to go with a friend every once in a while for a chocolate martini or three and some catch-up. At the time, they had several different chocolate martinis on their menu and some came with a Hershey kiss at the bottom which sealed the deal for me. My brother had a gift card for the family of restaurants so we decided to check out Towne Tavern for drinks on Saturday night. The bar looked exactly the same but I didn't see any chocolate martinis on the current menu. I'm wondering if they put that menu at the newer, fancier Cafe Madison. Only a couple tables were open when we waked in so we grabbed a booth and checked out the menu. The beer selection was really weak, though they did have Flying Fish HopFish on tap. My brother's girlfriend had a couple different flavored martinis that she said were okay but not super strong. The crowd was mixed and by 10pm or so, we were one of the only tables left, outside of the people sitting at the bar. They had a guy singing and playing guitar who was decent, but the bar is so small that it was also a little awkward. Our server, Holly, was a peach.* She kept the drinks flowing and stopped by at the right times to make sure were were all set. Honestly, if my parents want to catch a drink at the Towne Tavern sometime, I'm all in. Went to this place during a restaurant week. This place has a beautiful dining room. Lots of dark wood, there's this waterfall thing over the bar right when you walk in. They do a great job setting the atmosphere for a special evening. The service was good. I think I got a steak, and my date got salmon. I had the crab and corn chowder soup. That was very good. The highlight for me was the wine. I ordered a bottle of a Barolo merlot. It made the evening. All in all... I'd say even with all the fancy decor, underneath is just another typical steakhouse. 3 stars out of 5 read more

My first time here, and I was impressed by the bar and the space. The bartender was excellent, and very friendly. The beer was cold, and the other bar patrons were friendly. Here is what I didn't care for: the food. I ordered smoked wings, and a wedge salad. The wings appeared to be from malnutritioned chickens. They were very small and didn't have much meat on them. They were claimed to be of the smoked variety; they were far from touching smoke. There was no evidence that these wings ever saw the inside of a smoker. No color and zero flavor of smoke. The sauce was pedestrian at best. Noting more than a store bought sauce. Don't advertise you have great wings if all you do is buy a frozen product and toss it with a commercial wing sauce I could buy at the corner store. I asked for the wings, specifically, to be crispy. Epic fail. The skin on the wing was rubbery and not enjoyable. I didn't care for the wings at all. There is nothing remarkable about the wings here. Hard pass. My wedge salad was a nice large piece of iceberg lettuce. The think cut bacon cubes were the best part. The roasted tomatoes were too much and too away from the refreshment of the lettuce. There was a minimal amount of dressing on the salad. I didn't bother to ask for more, because I had already expressed my disappointment with the wings. The bleu cheese crumbles on the salad were minimal. It was basically lettuce and bacon. If that is how it's served all the time, it is grossly over priced. I probably wouldn't eat here again. I would go for drinks, as it is close to family in this area. I was told the food was good here. My opinion is obviously different than the folks of Riverside, NJ. read more

I can't believe this place is hidden in Riverside. I went for the first time with family and was blown away by the food quality. Everything is incredibly fresh, the menu had so many options that intrigued me. The service staff was fantastic and the atmosphere is very mellow and classy. The outdoor dining area is beautiful! Never really had a bad visit here. We like to sit at the bar (which has purse hooks) and take advantage of happy hour specials. (Monday-Fridays 3-6). The restaurant THE MADISON attached is upscale and delicious as well and boasts a pretty decent banquet area. Our Firehouse 125 Anniversary dinner was there and the food was premo. We got a gift certificate for this place. But I was hesitating to go. Feel it is too pricey. My husband and I like good food, good atmosphere, but don't like to over pay. But my husband insisted to give it a try. So we went for dinner on Sunday. The moment we stepped in, we loved the environment immediately. We ordered appetizers (Lamb Ragout), soups and seafood main courses. I even ordered Pink Grapefrutini. We loved everything we ordered. Nice portion, great taste. It is a little pricey but worth it. The steak that I ordered was cooked to perfection. They had a great wine lists with and excellent selection. I teated myself after dinner and had a snifter of the 20 year old Grand Mariner. I was disappointed that at the table next to me was a guy wearing sandals and shorts. That was the only negative. Love it here, never had a bad meal. Came in this afternoon for drinks and a few apps. The tots and waffle fries were a hit. I really enjoyed the cajun garlic wings. My friends and I love their outdoor courtyard but it was closed today for a wedding. The courtyard is a great place to hang with a group of friends- the drinks and ambience are on point. I would have given a fifth star if the bartenders were friendlier. At times it felt like we were an inconvenience for ordering another round or wanting to place a food order. Food was good , drinks were cold, service was not so great. Three stars is due to service. Stopped in this past Thursday. The waitress was non existent. We generally get Brenda who is beyond awesome and friendly but this night it was not Brenda. Place was moderately busy but not too busy that we should have had to wait 20 minutes for the waitress to take our drink order, at which time we attempted to put In our appetizer but we were told she was going to do drinks first then food. Mind you we sat for 20 minutes already. We then ordered dinner, place started to clear out then without requesting the check got dropped, we were surprised since we were planning at least one more drink. Went to the open air outside courtyard with good friends anticipating a great experience, considering the beautiful atmosphere and hype. We arrived at 6:15 PM and ordered drinks. It took 15 minutes to get drinks. We ordered food from the very limited bar menu. 3 hamburgers and a sausage sandwich. We didn't receive our meal for an hour and a half. The waitress kept apologizing for the delay without any excuse or reason. The burgers finally came out and they were cold. They came with bags of potato chips which expired in July. I asked to speak with the manager and the waitress told me the manager was too busy to speak with us. Seriously? Too busy? The place is beautiful, but unfortunately the service and food sucks. We won't be back and I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. You're better off going to PJs or Otts. read more

Been to this establish multiple times. Typically have a positive experience. Tonight was a different story. The bartender was NASTY, from the moment we walked in. She set the vibe for the entire place. This is the 3rd or 4th time that I have had the same experience with the same bartender. In the business of customer service, her attitude is inexplicable. Unpleasant as a welcome could be and from there it continues to get worse. Eye rolls on questions, nasty feedback on general questions as if we should know the answers. I like this place and the food is good but if I go again and this girl is bartending, I will be turning around and walking out. Good food, friendly staff and reasonable prices. The Towne Tavern has been around for a long time and the food here just keeps getting better. They have great Happy Hour deals and the staff is friendly. The Chili is one of my favorites and the burgers are very good. The beer selection is average so if you're looking for a lot of choices this may not be the place for you. They do not have the NFL Ticket so you are limited to whatever games are on network TV which is why I only gave the Towne Tavern 4 stars. read more
