Jerk chicken plantain cabbage Rice and Peas

I can't believe my sister finally took me to her favorite Jamaican spot and it has me questioning what I've been missing out on all this time! We both got beef patties, mild for me and spicy for her and apparently we were lucky to get some this time since my sister said they're usually out most of the time. I also heard they do a BOGO special on Monday's and I'll definitely be there for that! The mild patty was perfect for me, just a hint of spice, perfectly savory, with a golden (hence the name) flaky crust on the outside. The spicy wasn't that spicy at all so maybe I'll opt for that next time. My sister got the small jerk chicken plate with rice, plantains and cabbage. TRADE SECRET ALERT: you HAVE TO, I mean HAVE TO ask them for oxtail gravy over your rice. GOOD GOD ALMIGHTY, that rice smothered to death in that stewed gravy was honestly my favorite part of the entire meal. The jerk chicken was flavorful and had the right amount of spices. It was most on the inside and the skin was packed with spices. I loved the cabbage and the plantains were perfectly sweet and soft. Will definitely be back!

We drive from 336 to eat here. The best in the business. The owner and staff are very pleasant. The establishment was clean and in order.

"Inexpensive but tasty Caribbean food and patties" This chain store is nestled in a little strip mall with Roses. I came twice- once for lunch with some Duke Yelpers and once for dinner with my family. The restaurant is bright and playing fairly loud music (though comfortable). Prices are posted visibly, and most of the food is right there in front of you as you're ordering. For lunch, I got three of their "patties"- basically like empanadas or English "Cornish pasties". They come in a variety of flavors, so I tried the spicy beef, jerk chicken, and vegetable. Surprisingly, the veggie one was, hands-down, my favorite- very spicy, and full of great tasting veggies. The meat ones taste good, but they have a sort of soup-like texture- almost like the meat was run through a blender for a long time. I also tried the coco bread- it was "just OK." The patties range in price right around $2, so they're a good value. For dinner, I had the goat curry meal- the goat was AWESOME. Melt-in-your-mouth good, though watch out for lots of small bones. The large goat curry meal cost $10, and it came with the meat, rice (I had yummy spinach rice), vegetables (good but a little oily/ buttery), and fried sweet plantains. It's a huge meal, and really good. My family also got the plantains, and although they usually love eating that, they said these had a funny after-taste/ texture (I didn't notice, but I only had 3 pieces). My daughter also wasn't crazy about her patties- she said the spinach one tasted like canned spinach, and the chicken one was too soupy (few "chunks"). They had traditional Caribbean dishes available, too, like callaloo, ackee, etc. I wanted to try the Jamaican "festival", but they didn't have it either time, unfortunately, despite it being on the menu. Service was friendly- you order at the counter, and they dish out for you- almost cafeteria-style. Overall, A-OK. Good place to try. Since my family wasn't crazy about it, I'm not sure it was quite good enough to enter our regular "rotation", but I certainly enjoyed my food both times (especially that goat curry). For a more authentic edge, I prefer Caribbean Paradise (http://www.yelp.com/biz/caribbean-paradise-durham), though.

Never ever disappointed. I'm always so delighted when I get a chance to eat here. The oxtails, brown rice, and cabbage are absolutely divine. The ladies at the counter are always kind and friendly and the portion sizes are extremely generous. If you haven't tried this place, you simply must. I promise you that you will absolutely love it.

Ample parking Friendly staff Quick service They have roti but it's not on the menu! Ask for it. It is impossible to find roti here in the Triangle. I got a curry goat Roti for $14. I was stunned by the cost but it's HUGE. Check out my on yelp. The dining area is clean but not immaculate -- like any other fast food place. Overall, I will return. I wish there was one in Raleigh.

The chicken is dark meat served on the bone - and by on the bone, I mean falling off the bone, it's so tender and moist. There are also some carrots and potato bits in the gravy, and I would happily eat a whole bowl of just those. The rice and peas (beans) were perfectly cooked. When I ordered through the Toast tab screens they have set up, it gave the option of indicating whether and how much gravy you'd like on the rice. I did the standard amount, which I think is just right, as the rice balances out the saltiness of the gravy. The mac & cheese was also really good - creamy, with some chewy baked cheese crust, and a hint of tanginess. The large portion was a ton of food. I shared my plate with my toddler, who loved the chicken, and it would be enough for at least one more meal. I also got a chicken patty, which had a curried chicken filling that brought a bit of heat. Too spicy for little kids, but not so spicy that I was hurting from eating it. We ate in the restaurant, which is clean with several tables. It's counter service, and it seems like they pack everything as if it's to go, even if you dine in. For folks with kids, they do have a single high chair. I don't remember seeing a changing table in the ladies room.

The collard greens had SO MUCH FLAVOR, I could eat a big bowl by itself! We can't wait to come back and get the oxtails and some other menu items, I think we will be very happy with anything they cook here!

"Delicious Honduran food just south of I-85 on Guess Rd in Durham"…read more Came here on a Saturday evening a little after 6pm-- this is the building that used to be "Pad Thai" a few years ago. There's parking out front, but not a ton, and a bit more along the side. Inside, there's a counter by the door with a register and mints (and probably where one would pickup takeout), but you wait to get seated. The place was bright with interesting Central American paintings and lively music. A few tables were taken but it was hardly what I'd call "busy". I ordered the Tajada con carne molida (fried plantains with ground beef) off the "Honduran menu". My dining partner had a creamy chicken mofongo. We also had Jarritos sodas-- I got the pineapple and she had the tamarind. One awkwardness was that the menu didn't have any prices, but I assumed (correctly) that nothing would be crazy expensive that we ordered (though weirdly the tamarind and pineapple Jarritos were different prices). Service was good-- although English was a second language, our server made do, accurately took our order, and was attentive. As other reviewers noted, this is not a speedy place-- I think it was at or maybe over 20 minutes to get our food, but that was fine. Both dishes were really good. The creamy sauce on the mofongo was to-die-for... so yummy. And I enjoyed my plantain/ beef dish-- my dining partner said it was somewhat analogous to "nachos" in a funny way, and she's not wrong. The plantains were pretty stiff-- almost like plantain chips, but still yummy, and the beef and accompaniments were excellent (see photo). The quantity was HUGE-- both of us had enough easily for a second meal. Price wasn't bad-- with the drinks and tax and tip, it was slightly over $50 total. Overall, I'm very happy we tried this place, and I have every intention of coming back.

Came here after the Durham Farmers Market with a friend and wow this place was a surprise. …read more I went with the grain bowl and honestly it is one of the best I have had in downtown Durham. It is built on quinoa and rice with black beans and kale, then layered with corn salsa, tomato cortido, guacamole, and a creamy acevichado style sauce that pulls everything together. It is finished with a crunchy mix of pepitas, nuts, and grains. The balance is quite ideal in my view. My friend had the rotisserie chicken with two sides, kale and slaw, and it was just as impressive. Crispy skin, juicy inside, and really clean flavors. Simple food done right and GF friendly. Everything felt thoughtfully prepared. Prices land right where you would expect for the quality, roughly 16 to 21 dollars depending on what you order, and it feels worth it. My bowl plus side of dark chicken was plenty. A few notes. Parking is what you would expect for downtown, so plan accordingly. Service was solid and friendly, but nothing that stood out. The vibe inside is festive and relaxed, bright and open, and just a fun place to hang out for lunch. Porbably not a special occasion. I also suspect it could get loud when full. This is definitely going into my regular rotation. That grain bowl is going to be hard to pass up next time, so instead of replacing it I will probably just add a side or an empanada and start working my way through the rest of the menu.

With their big lunch boxes, and delicious food, Jamaica Jamaica got me hooked on Jamaican/Caribbean food and I consider it one of my favorite cuisines. I'd say my Jamaica Jamaica life could be split into 3 segments, in which I would always get the same thing no matter what. My first phase was the curry chicken - such a fantastic dish with chicken that came off the bone, a vibrant curry sauce, and potatoes and carrots to round out the dish. When you paired it with rice, cabbage and plantains, it was an almost perfect meal. My second phase was the curry shrimp, I was always enticed by having a seafood option. The flavors of the curry shrimp were the same as the curry chicken, except the vegetables varied. I enjoyed this dish too, but I would say the biggest issue would be that the shrimp sometimes got really soft after sitting out for some time. My current phase is their Jerk chicken. I would say that their Jerk chicken is unique because they make the chicken, but they let it sit in a sauce that soaks up the seasoning. This is a great topper for my rice, but I think it contributes to the fact that the Jerk chicken is definitely not as flavorful as I know it to be. It misses the mark on bringing the heat, it has some flavor and heat but it is very very mild in my opinion. Generally speaking, I would be aware of the Jerk chicken drying out. This has happened to me on an occasion or two, along with the rice being dry too. Outside the realm of food, I would say the interior could use a little work. The furniture is a bit dated and things are cluttered. However, the staff working there is nice and they always pack the food in a big to-go container, so you can bring it back to the office, and then home because they are not shy about the portions. Glad that hasn't changed!
