Late last year, I learned I needed prostate surgery. One of my other physicians recommended Golden Gate Urology to perform the surgery. I selected Dr. Daniel Oberlin, of the practice. I can not recommend Dr. Oberlin highly enough. He is very considerate, kind, and very sensitive to the specific needs of his patients. Dr. Oberlin took as much time as necessary to thoroughly discuss available surgery options and provide valuable insight regarding the appropriate procedure for each of his patients. Dr. Oberlin recognized my anxiety and did everything possible to minimize it, both before and after the surgery. Because the need for surgery occurred late in 2023, I was unable to get an appointment for the procedure until this year. Crystal, one of the staff who is truly an angel sent to Earth, saw to it that my catheter was changed frequently for cleanliness and to minimize the risk of infection. Everyone in the practice, from Dr. Oberlin, his assistant Danielle Shanahan, Crystal, the wonderful front office, and the scheduling team actually made me look forward to appointments. This includes post-surgery follow-up appointments. Huge mega kudos to the entire staff of Golden Gate Urology, Inc. I just read the clinical notes on 10/9/2025 " His daughter complains the he gets up too much at night to go to the bathroom. However the patient himself only states that he gets up once or twice at night. In addition, the patient is not terribly bothered by his nocturia. The daughter does not wake up with patient when he has to go to the bathroom. ... that is not actually bothersome to the patient." (I showed my hand count 6 times on 10/8/2025 to Dr Barme, I stayed up to 3am, and count the rest with baby monitor alarm.) What's is the definition of bothersome? If it doesn't bother my dad, he doesn't need to get up. This is totally ridiculous to me. If my 92 years dad need my help to got to bathroom every single time at night, he should use diapers instead. He's still good mobility that's why he should seek for help. Finally, I paid for the subscription with video recordings and daily counts. I changed to SutterHealth Urology at Fremont (an hour drive). I showed the recording to new office and explained the situation. I only see PA. They trusted me. They made medication changed and add generic (low cost, not $600 Gemtesa) overactive bladder medicine. About 3 week, he get up 4 times recently and only REAL twice last night. read more

Care and quality could improve. Dr. Pinkney inserted a TOT sling in my groin area when he performed surgery on my prolapsed bladder. The sling in my groin cost me a lot of pain and suffering. Very sloppy work and he did not explain very well. I would never recommend him to anyone. read more

My son has had lower abdominal/urination/lower back pain for 6+ weeks. He saw Dr. Piekny and was told he has a case of prostatisis, was prescribed a 4 week course of Bacrtrim and naproxen sodium (for inflammation and pain) and sent on his way. 2 weeks later, the pain was the same, so he talked to the doctor. Doctor said to wait the 4 weeks. At 4 weeks and one day, things completely broke down. My son was still in extreme pain but the doctor would not renew the naproxen sodium, so my son is in worse pain then the prior month. The doctor said they would order "imaging." My son received the number for the imaging place (after multiple calls to the doctor). Two weeks later, the imaging center has not received an order for imaging, my son is in excruciating pain, and every person I call just tries to book me an appt with Dr Piekny (vs solving the problem). In the end, I actually figured out the problem. The imaging center told me my son would need kidney screening labs before the imaging could be scheduled. This someone resulted in the schedulers at the center not having an order and Golden Gate Urology clearly has no process for following up and ordering those labs (as someone who designs clinical workflows sometimes, I am pretty sure this is a standard workflow exception). It is terrible that they left a 21 year old guy in pain for 2 weeks, unable to process a request for imaging correctly. It is even worse that they were so insistent that we should just book an appt every time I tried to find out what was going on with the imaging. I really hope all this is worth something. My son's symptoms are also similar to a kidney stone. But it seems Golden Gate urology waited this long to do any imaging. Meanwhile, he lost a semester of college. There has to be a better way ... read more

I had a vasectomy done by Dr. Andrew Pienkny and his workmanship was very sloppy. I shaved the area as instructed and the medical assistant noted that the area was sufficiently hair-free when she did an inspection immediately before the procedure. While Dr. Pienkny did a good job on one of the incisions, he took a lot longer to operate on the other side and ended up sewing some of my pubic hair into the suture. I didn't discover this until I got home, but it was very obvious once you looked at the area. My wife, a veterinarian who regularly performs delicate surgeries on furry animals, was particularly peeved by his work because keeping hairs out of the suture is one of the most basic mistakes first year medical students are taught to avoid. Predictably, the non-sterile hairs in the suture caused an infection. I went back to the office a week later to get it treated and was seen by Dr. Dan Oberlin. I tried telling Dr. Oberlin multiple times about Dr. Pienkny's poor workmanship, but he, perhaps in an attempt to avoid legal liability, never apologized or acknowledged my complaints and simply responded with a patronizing "oh, that must be so frustrating." Fortunately the infection was not serious, but recovery was delayed significantly. It's been almost 5 months since the surgery and there is still a lump of scar tissue at the site of the infected incision. In contrast, the site of the other incision has been completely healed for 3 months now. I would highly recommend against having any surgical procedures done at Golden Gate Urology. Side note: nobody working at the office from the receptionists to the medical staff wears masks. Seems odd for a medical facility in Berkeley in this day and age. read more

My relative had to deal with the Foley for 5 days until he was able to get an appointment to see Dr. Yan. He also suffered with the skin blisters with water due to the Foley straps. I called in Dr. Yan's office on the following business day and before I let them know what happened to my relative, the receptionist thought I was trying to ask for the urine test result, and she clearly said the urine test result showed my relative had no infection. Isn't it funny? Can we or the future patients trust their urine test result anymore? Then, I told the receptionist about my relative's Emergency visit during the weekend, and she just scheduled my relative to see Dr. Yan 3 days later. I drove my relative to Dr. Yan's office, and again we waited 1 hour at the lobby and another 20 minutes at the patient's room before we could actually see Dr. Yan. Dr. Yan took us to his office and he sat behind the computer. He didn't even bother to close his office door himself; he just asked us to close the door for him. I asked Dr. Yan what will cause urinary tract infection to my relative; of course, Dr. Yan was defensive and gave us all kinds of possibilities and excuses. We're so tired of Dr. Yan's excuses. We just wanted to get this infection treated and can't wait to escape from Dr. Yan's office. Dr. Yan prescribed some medicine for my relative and sent him to the patient's room again. Dr. Yan didn't even want to check on my relative's condition, and he just instructed his nurse to remove the Foley for my relative. Dr. Yan didn't apologize at all, perhaps in an attempt to avoid legal liability. During the last 2 visits I went with my relative, I found out the following problems for Dr.Yan's office: 1) Dr. Yan doesn't respect patient's appointment time at all. Dr. Yan's standard late time for each appointment is 1.25 hours to 1.5 hours. For example, if my relative's appointment was at 10am, my relative needed to wait at the lobby for about 1 hour before the nurse came out to get my relative in to the patient's room. After getting into the patient room, the nurse would say just wait, Dr. Yan will come soon, and that's another 15 to 30 minutes wait until you actually see Dr. Yan. About almost 99% of Dr. Yan's patients are Asian, and they are non-English speakers. During the wait time at the lobby, patients will talk with each other and complain how Dr. Yan always late for appointments and his bad bedside manner. Those patients don't have many choices to other urology offices because they don't speak English, or they don't have friend/family to take them to other offices. 2) During all the appointment visits, Dr. Yan didn't spend too much time with the patients. He was focus more on computer and typing in electronic medical records. He doesn't even bother to have eye contact with the patients. 3) The medical reclining chair in the patient's room is old, rusted, and the seating cover is broken. 4) Hygiene Concern in the Patient's room: paper towels were just put on the countertop, not in the paper towel dispenser. Plastic syringes with no packages were just put on the countertop as well. Anyone (nurses, doctor, or different patients) can have access to the patient's room could touch the paper towels and plastic syringes which will cause germs to them. No new gloves inside the patient's room. 5) Big concern on the Dr. Yan's and the nurse's hygiene practice as well. There are no new gloves inside the patient's room. Dr. Yan and the nurse had the gloves on before they entered the patient's room. They both touched the door knobs on both side with the gloves on. Both Dr. Yan and the nurse didn't change a new pair of gloves before they started any procedures. What a bad hygiene practice for a medical office! No wonder, patient got infection after their sloppy work! 6) During the final visit, we witnessed Dr. Yan used Cantonese to yell at his elderly woman patient in the back office. Dr. Yan was yelling at the elderly patient in Cantonese something like "I don't have time to help you. It's wasting my time. Go to ask the front desk." When Dr. Yan saw us entering to his office, he lowered his voice, and the nurse took the elderly patient out of Dr. Yan's office. We voiced our horrible experience to the primary doctor. We are so glad that we no longer need to deal with Dr. Yan. Stay away from this office! read more

I am nearing a year of incapacitating side effects from a SINGLE SHOT OF LUPRON DEPOT (instead of the 18 month regimen Oberlin recommended) and there seems no end in sight. Oberlin offered no warning of side effects other than "possible mild fatigue". his irresponsible, unprofessional behavior has essentially brought my life to a standstill. GG Urology employs a role, linear treatment process which ignores possible negative variations. I'd like to revise my previous negative review about this business. I have had numerous follow-up appointments in the interim, and have needed to call the office at least three or four times for information or requests. I have found that if I press Option 5 when I get into their phone system, I will usually get a live person (as long as it's not during lunch, when they close) and get an answer right away. All of my encounters with staff during my in-office visits have been very pleasant and professional. I have also continued to find both Dr. Barme and Dr. Pinckney professional and very nice to deal with. read more

I wish I could give the front desk a minus 5. I am actually writing this review as I am now sitting in the waiting room waiting for my turn. This is my first visit to an urologist. I was told that I had to do a urine test upon arrival. I held my urine so that I was able to provide a sample when arriving at the office. First thing when I arrived, I told the front desk right away that I urgently needed to use the restroom and if they could please provide me with a receptacle. ANDREA at the front desk, ignored my urge and proceeded to file paperwork and ask for my insurance card. I explain again that I urgently needed to use the restroom. Again, I was ignored by ANDREA, with a smirk on her face. I was about to urinate in my pants in front of everyone in the waiting room when I ran to the hall, to get to the bathroom. What part didn't she get as I was feeling humiliated stating again that it was urgent. I flipped her the bird in frustration of her not providing me the cup and being dismissive of my desperate need to relief myself. As I ran to the bathroom, a nurse provided me with the cup so I could finally relief myself and provide them with a sample. The manager of the office came to tell me that I should've been respectful. Respectful?? ANDREA was the one that should have been respectful of me! I am the patient! I went to the urologist, my first time ever, because I am having bladder issues. I am appalled of what happened! ANDREA never apologized and it was not reprimanded by the manager. How can that happen at an Urology office?? How?? I felt completely humiliated. ANDREA should not work at a doctor's office. She had no remorse for her behavior. I informed the doctor that I would be living a review about what happened. Awful customer service. No one ever picks up the phone or calls you back when you leave a message. Doctor Regelman rushes to get you out when you final have your appointment. Test results never arrived before my visit despite being assured they had! Quick to take your copay but unfortunately not a place I would recommend. Their system is broken. read more

In a former life, I installed phone systems, so I am familiar with how they work, and I can say with very strong certainty that this was not a "technical malfunction", but rather an employee who turned the phone system to "out of office" early--that's fine if you want to close early, just don't hang up on patients right away to do it, and don't try to explain it away with an inaccurate portrayal. As my initial experience was a genuine experience and reflective of one star, and the follow-up did not seem to merit any change, I'll keep this at single star. read more

I was a little concerned because some of the ratings online are so low and when I got to the waiting room it was packed and chaotic. The office itself feels cramped and not updated, but the visit went well from start to finish. It seems that most people who visit urologists are senior citizens. I'm not quite there yet and had a specific undiagnosed medical issue. I was surprised when Dr. Oberlin came into the room. He appears to be very young, and looks more of someone who would play a doctor on TV than an actual doctor. He's alarmingly handsome. But he was fantastic. Asked all the right questions, ordered the right tests and had me diagnosed within a day, even though the issue turned out not to be urological in nature. Two doctors before him had not been able to figure out what was going on. I hope I don't need a urologist anytime soon, but if I do he's my guy. read more

I went to see Dr Yan for a consultation, and received a surprise bill. I have now sent them 7 (!) letters and called them 6 (!) times, but this still isn't resolved. I'm sure the doc is good, but their back-office is an absolute shambles, and for that reason alone I would avoid them like the plague. I have made numerous attempts for the last two weeks to get my medical records as I am starting a fertility process with a clinic. The medical records voicemail line doesn't work, when I called they leave me on hold for half an hour, and when they finally pick up they transfer me to the voicemail line that doesn't work. I finally got a hold of someone today and they said the person responsible for medical records is away and won't be back until a week and a half from now. And until then nothing can be done and that they were short staffed so the process stopped. Then she proceeded to send me to his voicemail that does not work. This is seriously the most unprofessional customer service I've ever had. I didn't ask for anything other than what Golden Gate Urology said they were going to do. Dr. Wieder recommended that I get an ultrasound which I did. This was in May. In June I got a call from Dr. Piser, Dr. Wieder's partner, who told me the results came back and that Dr. Wieder would give me a call. I asked him a question two times, but he REFUSED to answer and just said that when Dr. Wieder returned he would give me a call to answer my question. On August 23 I called the office to ask Dr. Wieder to give me a call. They said he would but didn't give a timeline. Not receiving any call I called again on September 14 and asked again to be given the call and for the results to be mailed to me. They LIED and told me someone already called and left a message which never happened. They said that Dr. Wieder would return near the end of September and give me a call about the details then. They also said they would put the results in the mail that day. Guess what? Yep Dr. Wieder never called and they didn't even send the letter. Yeah they LIED ABOUT SENDING MAIL. By October 13 I still had not received the results so I called again and left a message. On October 17 I called again and asked when they thought the results would arrive and they "didn't know what happened" and would send the letter "right away". They also said that an assistant called me and left a voicemail but that also never happened. Seriously why would you LIE ABOUT LEAVING A VOICEMAIL??? I have an iPhone and can see no one called or left a voicemail. Hey Golden Gate Urology staff, I know exactly what happened. You are shady scumbags who LIE TO PATIENTS ABOUT SENDING MEDICAL RESULTS. So the next time you're in the market to spend THOUSANDS of dollars for NOTHING and to be LIED to by SHADY SCUMBAG DR. WIEDER, SHADY SCUMBAG DR. First of all, I've never met such a kind, attentive, caring and fun DR like Dr Oberlin. I wish he was my primary doctor! I went to see Dr Oberlin for the first time for bloody urine, I called Golden gate after I got my appointment cancelled by pacific urology, due to Dr's personal emergency. I was desperate to see Dr asap so I called Golden gate urology. I called on Tuesday and my appointment was set for that Thursday, much sooner than my original appointment with pacific urology (pacific urology's waiting time was 2weeks) The staff there was all kind and smily, it made me feel at ease. Dr. Oberlin took time to explain my condition and what would be happening from now on without scaring me. Hours after the first appointment, I came up with one question so I emailed him. It normally takes days to get Dr's reply but he emailed me back only a few hrs later with kind sentences, not like robotic, short, minimum sentences like you normally get from Drs. I went to my second appointment today, The Dr and people there were all nice as the first time. He explained about all my test results one by one. I'm Japanese so I have hard time understanding those medical terms. I had my American friend with me, but that didn't stop him from taking time to patiently explain to me in a way that even a 10 year old could understand ^ ^ Again, after my appointment, I came up with another question. I was still there at the clinic so I asked the nurse if she could quickly ask Dr my question, but they seemed very busy, so I left thinking I can ask him via email. But then, 5 minuets later I left the clinic, he personally called my phone to ask me what the question was about. That was unbelievable!!! I've never had such a great experience with Drs or medical offices before. I'm very very thankful for that. read more

Dr. Wieder might be a great urologist, but I wouldn't know, since I left Golden Gate Urology (as this place is now called) before I got the chance. I did everything possible to have a painless appointment experience (made an early morning appointment, gave insurance and history information over the phone, arrived on time) and still had to wait about 40 minutes in the waiting room. During this time, two other people were admitted, one of whom had a *later* appointment time (see below). Once I finally got into the examination room, I waited *another 45 minutes*. The assistant told me a few times that "the doctor was coming soon" (including once when I went out in the hall and asked, clearly annoyed), but after a few times I learned the hard way this wasn't actually true, and left in a huff to take my business elsewhere. The assistant was apologetic but didn't try to get the doctor to try and save the situation, she seemed resigned that I was now an ex-patient. She wanted me to wait around further to refund my co-payment but I told her to mail it to me; I wasn't about to waste any more time with these people. As an aside, I also witnessed an unhappy patient while I was in the waiting room: She was late for her appointment since she waited at the other office on the same floor, but still arrived before the appointment time of another man who was taken early and before her. She was visibly upset and complained, and didn't get much emotional reaction from the staff. She was taken next and might have been part of the reason the doctor delayed in seeing me, but that's not my problem. All in all, I would at least expect the doctor himself to peek in and apologize for such a long wait. Of course, the main problem is overbooking and expecting that patients will wait through anything. The doctor's time is valuable, I am sure, but so is mine. read more

Avoid this place at all costs. I waited well over an hour for my appt with no explanation for a less than 5 minute appointment with a distracted supposed doctor of Urology. He told he knew nothing about fertility , gave me a referral and sent me back up front where I was told I needed to pay nearly 500. Even though I was in network and Cigna had cleared the payment . I paid the bill as instructed but requested that the bill be submitted to Cigna so that I could be reimbursed . They did submit to Cigna for the full amount and got paid again. I have since found out that they charged me double the rate . Not sure wheat get their dishonesty or their incompetence will get them shut down first but these guys are a nest of sleaze and stupidity read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Chi Lee's for over ten years. I could not ask for better care. After a few years of using medication to increase urine flow from an enlarged prostate, we ultimately had to do surgery. Dr. Lee did a tunneling procedure that preserved the prostate yet removed tissue surrounding the urinary tract that was causing the blockage. I had to be catheterized for four days but once it came out, I had flow back. Many years later I still have good flow and bladder emptying thanks to Golden Gate Urology and Dr. Lee. read more

We waited over an hour to see the doctor for a procedure that only took a few minutes. One doctor was literally out the whole month, and Dr Lee "managed" to fit us into his schedule, but clearly there is time management issues. The office doesn't call back quickly and half of them are rude sitting behind a glass wall where you can hear them but they don't seem inclined to help. Dr Lee was okay, but it wasn't clear why he used a much smaller Plastibel on our son than was used on our older son. There seem to be a lot more bleeding and redness in this procedure than there was her older son. We don't doubt his skill level if he's been doing this for 18 years, but he does tend to talk down to you. They gave us no aftercare documentation or follow up information other then a quick verbal description from the doctor. The only reason this doesn't get one star is the fact that the doctors have been doing this for years, and the presumption is that they are actually fairly skilled. That said, our old pediatrician seemed to do a much better job both in procedure and bedside manner and he isn't a full time urologist. read more

Dr. Pienkny was very professional and did a good, efficient job in the surgical suite. Very little pain was involved. And the support staff were great - very helpful and efficient. He did leave a patient with an incomplete prescription for vicodin the day of the prescription, so it wasn't legally possible to fill the same day. We called in to ask how to fill the 'scrip, and they just brushed off our questioning, telling us to figure it out with the drug store. They could have given us the prescription the weeks in advance of the surgery. I can't imagine what would have happened if the pharmacist had not taken pity and filled the script for us anyway. The work itself might be excellent, but you shouldn't necessarily expect personalized service. read more

I recently had the pleasure of being a patient of Dr. Barme and I can't recommend his services enough! The entire support staff at Golden Gate Urology were friendly, personable, and efficient (even during these difficult times). They outlined which forms I needed to fill out prior to my arrival and clearly explained how the first meeting would go. I recently had a simple procedure and Dr. Barme explained and walked me through each step. His bedside manners were spot on and we even had a pleasant conversation during the whole thing. Fast forward to last year and I visited them myself for a surgical consult -- professional and knowledgeable all the way. Golden Gate Urology staff and office management is one of worst communicator and unprofessional medical clinic I have used. Scheduled appointment with staff and received email confirmation. I arrived with my son for appointment time about 5mins earlier. The receptionist gave me bunch of paper to update the info and took my insurance card. While I am filling the paperwork she comes and tells me that the doctor can't see us because they are busy and we are still filling the paper work. I said I don't think it is right because I took a day off from work, took my student off from school drove an hour to get here before appointment time and don't understand why they can't keep the appointment. She went back to check with somebody in the office and came back to say that they can't see us because somehow somewhere they told us we should arrive there 45mins earlier to do the paerwork. I checked the email that was sent to my wife and COULD NOT FIND any such mention. After repeated requests and also offering to let my son go for the exam while I am completing the paperwork was not heard. What kind of professional CLINIC is this? I HOPE THE REFFERING PHYSICIANS realize this. I AM NEVER GOING THERE and going to drop my physicians TOO....HOW COME THESE KIND LOW LEVER SERVICE STILL EXIST...is a mystery to me. If you are a female, stay away from Dr. Pienkny. He has the worst besides manner that I have ever experienced. The exam left me in excruciating pain. He told me that he had no idea why I had urination problems, considering that I was a woman. Went on to tell me about how since I didn't have a prostate that gravity is all it takes. Chalked up my symptoms from being a mother of 2. Luckily, I went to another Urologist. They were able to help me and I was ultimately diagnosed with MS. read more
