My relative had to deal with the Foley for 5 days until he was able to get an appointment to see Dr. Yan. He also suffered with the skin blisters with water due to the Foley straps. I called in Dr. Yan's office on the following business day and before I let them know what happened to my relative, the receptionist thought I was trying to ask for the urine test result, and she clearly said the urine test result showed my relative had no infection. Isn't it funny? Can we or the future patients trust their urine test result anymore? Then, I told the receptionist about my relative's Emergency visit during the weekend, and she just scheduled my relative to see Dr. Yan 3 days later. I drove my relative to Dr. Yan's office, and again we waited 1 hour at the lobby and another 20 minutes at the patient's room before we could actually see Dr. Yan. Dr. Yan took us to his office and he sat behind the computer. He didn't even bother to close his office door himself; he just asked us to close the door for him. I asked Dr. Yan what will cause urinary tract infection to my relative; of course, Dr. Yan was defensive and gave us all kinds of possibilities and excuses. We're so tired of Dr. Yan's excuses. We just wanted to get this infection treated and can't wait to escape from Dr. Yan's office. Dr. Yan prescribed some medicine for my relative and sent him to the patient's room again. Dr. Yan didn't even want to check on my relative's condition, and he just instructed his nurse to remove the Foley for my relative. Dr. Yan didn't apologize at all, perhaps in an attempt to avoid legal liability. During the last 2 visits I went with my relative, I found out the following problems for Dr.Yan's office: 1) Dr. Yan doesn't respect patient's appointment time at all. Dr. Yan's standard late time for each appointment is 1.25 hours to 1.5 hours. For example, if my relative's appointment was at 10am, my relative needed to wait at the lobby for about 1 hour before the nurse came out to get my relative in to the patient's room. After getting into the patient room, the nurse would say just wait, Dr. Yan will come soon, and that's another 15 to 30 minutes wait until you actually see Dr. Yan. About almost 99% of Dr. Yan's patients are Asian, and they are non-English speakers. During the wait time at the lobby, patients will talk with each other and complain how Dr. Yan always late for appointments and his bad bedside manner. Those patients don't have many choices to other urology offices because they don't speak English, or they don't have friend/family to take them to other offices. 2) During all the appointment visits, Dr. Yan didn't spend too much time with the patients. He was focus more on computer and typing in electronic medical records. He doesn't even bother to have eye contact with the patients. 3) The medical reclining chair in the patient's room is old, rusted, and the seating cover is broken. 4) Hygiene Concern in the Patient's room: paper towels were just put on the countertop, not in the paper towel dispenser. Plastic syringes with no packages were just put on the countertop as well. Anyone (nurses, doctor, or different patients) can have access to the patient's room could touch the paper towels and plastic syringes which will cause germs to them. No new gloves inside the patient's room. 5) Big concern on the Dr. Yan's and the nurse's hygiene practice as well. There are no new gloves inside the patient's room. Dr. Yan and the nurse had the gloves on before they entered the patient's room. They both touched the door knobs on both side with the gloves on. Both Dr. Yan and the nurse didn't change a new pair of gloves before they started any procedures. What a bad hygiene practice for a medical office! No wonder, patient got infection after their sloppy work! 6) During the final visit, we witnessed Dr. Yan used Cantonese to yell at his elderly woman patient in the back office. Dr. Yan was yelling at the elderly patient in Cantonese something like "I don't have time to help you. It's wasting my time. Go to ask the front desk." When Dr. Yan saw us entering to his office, he lowered his voice, and the nurse took the elderly patient out of Dr. Yan's office. We voiced our horrible experience to the primary doctor. We are so glad that we no longer need to deal with Dr. Yan. Stay away from this office!

I was admitted with a kidney stone that left me literally kneeling by the hospital bed in agony when he first came in to see me. From the moment he walked in, his kind and calm demeanor made a huge difference. He didn't just rush through -- he took the time to explain what was happening, what my options were, and how we could relieve the pain and get me on the path to healing. He treated me like a person, not just a patient in crisis. His expertise was clear, but what stood out most was his compassion. He reassured me in a moment when I felt completely overwhelmed, and he guided me through the procedure with such steady confidence that I felt safe placing my trust in him. Thanks to his care, I am able to move from a place of unbearable pain to healing and stability. I'm deeply grateful to Dr. Barme and would highly recommend him to anyone facing urological issues -- not only for his medical skill, but for the humanity he brings into the room.

Every other word was the eff word. He kept wanting to fist pump, kept asking if we were offended, and continued to tell us why he would not help my husband. He dismissed my husband. His answer to my husband's situation was... it's life and deal with it. It was a terrible experience. Such a disappointment. He treated me like a moron, didn't listen, and didn't solve my problem. So he only gets 2 stars. I was born with my right ureter through a muscle, which caused many kidney infections as a child. The local doctor misdiagnosed this as backwash. Luckily, my mom persevered and got a correct diagnosis and I was successfully operated on when I was 6. Last year (at 28), I had 3 kidney infections within 6 months. I thought this was a problem, so I starting the slow path through the insurance and doctoral hoops until I finally got to a urologist, who had a test done, which revealed that (surprise surprise) my right kidney had reduced functioning. He said this was likely due to scar tissue from the childhood operation, and could be fixed easily enough. Unfortunately, I moved to SF before we could get on with the fixing. The old urologist recommended Dr. Rosenberg here in SF, and I immediately made an appointment in hopes that we could start out where I had left off with other urologist. I brought with me my chart from the other urologist, including the results of the kidney function test. I wrote down my whole history in their "new patient" forms, and then told it all to Dr. Rosenberg. He pretended to listen, and then proceeded with the generally uncomfortable process of manually exploring my urinary tract. Below is a small excerpt of the frustrating conversation that ensued: Dr: It's probably backwash. Me: Actually, that is what I was misdiagnosed with as a child. Dr: Hmm. So, where's your scar? Me: On my lower abdomen. (Dr. examines scar on lower abdomen) Dr: Well, that is not where the scar should be, if the operation was what you said. It should be up here on your side. (Dr. proceeds to physically turn me and search for a scar on my side. Like there really might be a scar there that I had not noticed in the past quarter century. Like maybe I got a long thin scar on my lower abdomen through some other childhood scrape, like, I dunno, falling off a bike, and that distracted me from the REAL surgery scar on my side, unnoticed by me until the astute Dr. pointed it out.) Me: Um, no, I am sure I don't have a scar on my side. I don't know exactly how they did the operation, but I know it was my ureter through a muscle. Dr. (giving up on searching for the elusive side scar, but with no explanation as to the actual scar on my lower abdomen): Couldn't have been. It's probably backwash. If you have backwash, go to Dr. Rosenberg. For any other problem and/or for an actual doagnosis, go elsewhere. I am.

Dr Frick is caring, exceptionally skilled and really is the "go to" surgeon for bladder surgery. She is very compassionate and down to earth. My surgery went well and I have no more leakage. However, the system of communications at Sutter Health is abismal. It's virtually impossible to reach the actual doctor's office or get close. The measures they've put in effect to essentially "gate" calls puts patients through a maze of frustration just trying to reach your doctor. Their operations processes are just broken. The doctors get the downhill brunt of that. I had trouble reaching someone anytime I needed anything. If I got lucky and got through to Dr Frick, all went perfectly. But the path to getting heard and getting help needs re-evaluation at the corporate ops level. I personally decided it was worth the frustration to have Dr Frick and her team as my surgeon because she is so stellar. But it was not without moments of some fear when I couldn't easily reach her post surgery. Again, I doubt she even knew-it really was the system not the doctor or the people made to work within the system. In the end, I am SO much happier with life! I can jump, sneeze and laugh with wild abandon! So, it was worth it.

I finally stopped going to the office due to the ineptness of the staff, but was coaxed back in by the doctor. Unfortunately, the same issue has occurred on my first visit back- not yet a full hour, but I was the first person in the office and they still took the person who arrived after me first. I'll address the issue with the group and appropriate licensing boards, but you should be aware of their lack of professionalism, timeliness and standards. I've done all my due diligence in relation to arriving early, checking in and following directions- and I have no issues with interpersonal relationships or behavior- so this is egregious.

During that time, he has performed several procedures on myself and my husband. I can attest to the absolute caring and professional treatment we have received. While I was in the Hospital with Kidney issues his bedside manner and explanation of the medical part of my procedure gave me a very positive outlook on what the future would be for me. But, I'm very…read moreshy, and I explained my last visit with his partner whereby a female came to prep me for a procedure, and I was totally horrified, shocked in fact. His comment was "we don't have any male nurses" & "they have seen it a hundred times", neither comment of course eased any of my discomfort. After explaining the options, we chose one, and he advised that the first procedure would require a female to show me how it works. I was aghast, I just explained to him how uncomfortable I was about that. At any rate, I called back the following week and canceled the prescription & first initial instructional visit with his female assistant. I came away thinking, these doctor's aren't really interested in helping you address the core problem, it's more of a philosophy of hey try these drugs (even though they probably have never tried any themselves) and they will be your cure. But none of them are a cure, it's just a continual cycle of doctors who give what they think is best, and patients relying on medication that really doesn't address the core issues, or adequately treat the problem. I'm left frustrated with our healthcare, not just with doctor's, but insurance companies too. Insurance always seems to come between what your doctor & you agree is the best course of action, because insurance follows the cheapest path of care. Interjecting themselves between you & your doctor, as if they know better than you & your doctor, just isn't right. The state of healthcare in America is horrible, and that's a person talking from decades of healthcare coverage. Imagine people with no coverage, or MediCaid. Why can't we as a society push for cures, decent medical care, less pills, more research, a system where doctor's are not handcuffed by the final decision of insurance companies. Dr. Kaplan was a good doctor, but he's in the rabbit hole same as all the other doctors. Hamstrung by today's inadequacies in our medical care system. Would I recommend Dr. Kaplan, and go back to see him? Yes I would, he's the best in his field that I've met so far.
