Dr Kenneth Hsiao (pronounced--Shaow) has been following me for prostrate/bladder issues for about 15 years. He has been nothing short of professional, thorough and kind in caring for this very sensitive area for men. For years, he had me on meds to deal with enlarged prostate issues, until those meds no longer did the trick. Together, we explored options and chose an Aquablasion procedure done in the hospital, to clean out the prostate gland and give a more healthy solution than medicine. That was in May of 2024. It was extremely successful and aside from him not allowing me to resume normal running, cycling and pushups, etc, for a month, it went flawlessly. That procedure was highly successful, and he handled himself like a true professional. Recently, I had bladder issues, and he was able to resolve them with precision and his care was exemplary. I am in terrible pain from kidney stones right now and when I called to make an appointment with Dr. Kenneth Hsiao the main receptionist of NorCal Urology was so extremely rude! Extremely! How she got a job there or anywhere for that matter I will never know. I really think someone should explain to her that she actually works in the medical field and people are actually in pain when they are trying to get in touch with the Drs. that work at this medical facility so a much more pleasant demeanor would be a lot more acceptable. This discourteous individual then proceeded to tell me that the Dr. doesn't have any appointments until a month from the time that I am actually calling, then basically hung up on me. I will never be recommending anyone to NorCal Urology and I will be letting my primary care doctor know how unprofessional and rude the front desk is over there as well, as they might not want to be referring patients to such an unnecessarily nasty experience. I then proceeded to make an appointment at a different establishment where the receptionist who answered was friendly and courteous and very thorough and this place will be seeing me by the end of the week. So no to ever wanting to go to or recommending anyone to NorCal Urology when there are so many other establishments that hire competent personable people who know how to answer a phone. My visit with Dr Kenneth Hsiao was ok. His personality is not very welcoming. He's typical stern no emotion straight forward kinda dr. His medical assistant is more not the kindest nor makes you feel comfortable. There was no comfort in this visit. I'd wish the bathroom was more clean as well. I understand the bathroom was used a lot but the toilet had a bunch of crap on, I didn't want to sit on the toilet. I had a very unpleasant office visit today with Dr. Kenneth Hsiao. He was rude to make comments that were totally unprofessional. I never met a doctor that showed no courtesy to say the least. He said to my face that Medicare will go bankrupt to have patients like me because I have taken follow up tests that he viewed unnecessary but it was my primary doctor requested the test. It was regrettable for me to pick this doctor to care for my health, it would be my last appointment with Dr. Hsiao. read more

Dr. Yang-Loudin left the NorCal Urology practice a few months ago to join Stanford Healthcare; she never notified me by letter or phone call leaving me with a medication refill unattended. I only learned of this by calling the Walnut Creek office asking why my refill had not been approved. The staff was apologetic but had no reply when I asked why I had not been notified. Having worked in healthcare for over 40 years prior to retirement, I have NEVER seen this degree of inconsideration for patient care and professional irresponsibility. I thought I should post a recent review, since there are so many one star reviews which appear to be dated. I have been treated there for over ten years and while I agree with the characterization of a certain doctor who has since retired and the fact that the office staff has seemed inefficient at times, I have to say that my experience has been very good. I first visited Dr. Hsiao in October 2017 for complications that were thought to be caused by Prostatitis. I spent close to a half hour with him. After answering all his questions, he was puzzled. The last thing he did was order a CT. After getting the CT all the sirens went off!! I had a huge abscess on my bladder caused by diverticulitis. "Diverticular Abscess" If the abscess had burst I might not be here today. In February 2018 I underwent a 4.5 hour colon resection. If it wasn't for Dr. Hsiao, I might not be alive today! My poor husband was in so much pain and confused about what was even wrong with him. Dr. Hsiao rushed my husband out of the office with a handful of expired medication. My husband cried all night in pain but would not let me take him to the Emergency room. In the morning we called the office and explained the urgency to speak to the Dr. No one called back. We called at 4:30 pm and the receptionist told us that antibiotics had been ordered that morning, but no one had told us that. Dr. Hsiao had not taken a urine sample from my husband so why would he prescribe antibiotics? My husband's general practitioner said his test was negative for an infection. Here we still are with my husband in severe pain and Dr. Hsiao doesn't seem to care to help him get out of it. Horrible. read more

Update. So I decided to have the surgery. Everything went fine. My results are perfect. My experience with the doctor and the nurses and the receptionist at this facility have been wonderful. I am very pleased with the results and feel great. My only true complaint is that there's just no way to find out how much procedures are going to cost you before you have them. read more

I don't usually post reviews, but this experience was particularly bad. I went in to get a diagnosis. They asked me questions but ignored my answers and diagnosed me with something much more serious, I was given treatment, and was told to get tested only AFTER 3 WEEKS! I was devastated by the diagnosis, got tested later that day and results came in on the next day -- negative. I went to another doctor who told me what I actually have, and she was literally shaking her head when she heard what the other medic diagnosed me with. It's not just that I got a wrong diagnosis, this happens often. It was the seriousness of the wrong diagnosis, combined the fact that they ignored the information I gave them -- which would have ruled it out -- combined with unwillingness to order fast and simple labwork which would have ruled it out as well. The second half of the surprise came back after a month -- I have a HDHP and didn't meet my deductible yet, so I pay out of pocket. This useless visit was 3 TIMES more expensive than the second one -- both providers were in-network read more

I made two visits to Dr. Ken Hsiao, one at the end of July 2013, and a follow-up visit three months later. I waited to write this until after the follow-up visit. What I thought was a urinary tract infection turned out to be more serious. My "situation" was not a typical one, but one that needed attention right away. The good doctor spent the necessary time with me to figure out what was causing my symptoms, and after asking the right questions, was able to pinpoint the problem. He also dug into my past medical history (from 30 years ago) to help narrow down the problem. Dr. Hsiao surely had the technical skills to help me with my issue. His bedside manner was terrific as well. But, again, what impressed me the most was his desire to get at the crux of the problem. He stuck with it until it was resolved (I think it might have made his schedule slip a little that day, but was I grateful!). At the end of the first visit (which was after my procedure) he gave me immediate relief, and he made sure I knew what I had to do to prevent this from reoccurring. He went over the prescriptions, how to apply, etc. A lot of doctors don't take the time to do that. Lastly, I should mention Dr. Hsiao's assistants -- they made me feel comfortable with what I was going through. Okay, let me rephrase that, they made feel as good as possible. Let's face it, it's a very humbling experience to go through a procedure like this. They were awesome. Got a vasectomy from Dr. Kenneth Hsiao - I highly recommend him and his practice. I liked Dr. Hsiao's confidence which reflects his extensive training and experience. STAY AWAY!!!!! I had Dr. Hsiao perform a vasectomy. I notified him during the procedure that it was hurting and he brushed my off. During my follow up I informed him I am in a lot of pain. He refused to accept the fact that it had to do with my procedure. After 1 year of being in pain and many visits to him without any relief I decided to visit another urologist. He right away knew what was going on and put me on meds that cured my problem within a month. He put me in a year of depression because I had constant pain and inflammation in my testicles. read more

I like Dr. Hsiao --he has a very good personality--, but I would caution anyone regarding elective prostate surgery. Mine led to retro ejaculation, even though that was supposed to happen in only about 1% of those who underwent the same procedure. Another consequence was anorgasmia. Now I can only hope that the medication that Dr. Hsiao prescribed recently will eventually cure this second, unexpected side effect. read more

dr hsaio is not only my husbands dr for the past 10 years we credit him for catching a bladder tumor early and my husbands continued care and remission of this cancer we could not have asked for a better dr or friend of all the drs we have had dealings with over the past 10 plus years he is the only one we have stuck with and would never consider another ! read more

Dr. Hsiao caused me nothing but pain. The first time I saw him, he put some substance in my bladder that caused a worsening of pain that lasted almost 3 weeks after seeing him. He subsequently performed a cystoscopic procedure without adequate pain relief. He says he specializes in women's issues, but the care I received begs to differ. I finally got a chance to review my medical records, and they were full of inaccuracies and misstatements of fact. He prescribed medication for me that IS NEVER GIVEN TO WOMEN, and when I started received tons of literature about erectile dysfunction problems, I found it his office had released my personal information to a mailing list that specialized in boner pill literature. I would NOT recommend him as a urologist to any women patients. Sorry. read more

Dr. Hsiao's examinations, surgery and follow-up were a role model of skill, expertise and respecting the patient. I can't imagine how the results of his care and expertise could have been better, and my overall experience was exceptional in terms of trust, exploring options, and attending to a range of needs I posed that were often beyond the norm. He was always there for me, and acted with the most genuine concern for my welfare, coupled with a rare blend of humility and positive realism. Three words for "doctor" Hsiao-unprofessional, arrogant, useless. From the minute I walked into this office, I got a bad feeling, but once again, did not trust it. I am 35 years old, and have been having an on and off functional issue, which I have seen my Primary for. I was not looking for some quick fix, I was simply looking to start the process somewhere. A Urologist seemed like a reasonable point. I would not be exaggerating if I said this man was rolling his eyes as he walked into the exam room, and it didn't stop there. Had he asked me some actual, relevant medical questions, and from that concluded that a different professional would be more appropriate, I would have accepted that. Instead, I was treated like some punk kid looking for meds. There is nothing this man could give me that my Primary MD could not. Dr. Hsiao did nothing but attempt to make me feel stupid for coming to him with my concerns. He rolled his eyes at every answer I gave, and arrogantly stated that my very basic and relevant concerns were "unrealistic". Really doctor? A 35 year old male who wishes to have proper, full function consistently is unrealistic? Okay, then educate me on a more appropriate view...but no, more huffing and eye rolling. You have one job in medicine, Urology, and you cannot even handle what should have been a very quick and simple consult. This appointment was so horrible, that I actually got up and left 5 minutes into it. I then attempted to call my insurance to let them know that this appointment should not even be billed, as it was a complete waste of time. Dr. Hsiao can be assured that I will be reporting this further than just Yelp. This unacceptable behavior will not be tolerated. read more
