Health care the way it should be! Dr. Avon takes the time to listen, understand, and communicate. Always a quick joke or story...Never rushed. Always looks you in the eye. Absolutely the best bedside manner I've experienced in recent memory. I wanted to consult with Dr. Avon, but was treated like dirt. In fairness, I never actually got to MEET Dr. Avon... but that's exactly the issue at hand. I had an appointment to see him last week, but when I arrived at the office and checked in, the receptionist asked, "Oh, so you didn't get my voicemail? You were rescheduled to this morning." My thoughts: A) My presence should have been indication enough that I did NOT get the message (I've checked since... it wasn't received). Isn't it best practice for a dr's office to follow up to ensure that it was received??? B) John Muir Urology has a text message system- no such change was communicated via text **C) I had called the practice earlier that day to confirm the LOCATION... why wouldn't they provide me an update on TIME at that point? Still, my trip to the office was a minor inconvenience (I only live 10 min away), and I didn't think much of it at that time. I rescheduled the appointment for today. I showed up for today's appointment and checked in with no issues... but then nothing happened. I waited for 30 minutes before approaching the desk again, at which point, the receptionist asked me for my last name so that she could check me in... THEY FORGOT I WAS THERE! When I explained that, the receptionist then apologized and said she would check the reason for the delay. When she returned, she suggested that the doctor was running over with another patient... but then she started to say that him running over was expected and that they tried to call me... which was wrong again. It never happened. This time I made sure to confirm the time of the appointment beforehand. They took me back to a private room, but then they forgot about me... again... so after another half an hour, I left. I don't think I'd be so irate if this consultation wasn't supposed to be the only contact that I was supposed to have with the doctor before having surgery... but I couldn't go through with that. If this practice can't get scheduling right, how could I trust them to do anything else? Don't waste your time. Go to a different practice. read more

Awesome experience!! I was very apprehensive about having a vasectomy. My husband found Dr. Avon for me and I'm so glad she did. Dr. Avon and all of the staff were wonderful! I had a kidney stone blasted. my x-ray was red negative by the radiologist, but when he looked carefully at the film, saw the stone. He was able to do the lithotripsy at Fremont Surgical Center, (which was much better than a hospital based facility). the stone was successful disintegrated, and the stent was removed in the office the following week. very quick, accurate, and capable. his office staff are always kind and professional. read more

Dr. Avon is awesome, he is truly caring... but how far does his attention to patients go when his Admin. Assistant Joan is a flat out an arse to patients? No phone manners, extremely rude, and uncaring, the absolute opposite of this wonderful Doctor. Loved him since we first met him 8+ years ago, but the lack of professionalism and cordiality from his Admin has stopped us from going back to him. I've been seeing Dr Avon for a few years now. Originally I saw him when 2 E/R's and multiple tests were not able to determine the cause of my pain. As anyone who knows kidney stones can be very painful. He reviewed my X-rays which were deemed negative for kidney stones and saw something no one else did. A little spec 3french (medical measurement) big. He determined it was a stone and scheduled me for the proceedure to have it removed. Nothing but the highest level of professionalism and experience. I have the utmost respect and continue to see him. As for his receptionist in San Ramon, I have to agree with other reviewers that she could work on her people skills as they are none existent. read more

If you want a personable, professional urologist, I would highly recommend Dr. Mark Avon. My husband saw Dr. Avon after having a three month kidney stone pain and coming back from an ER visit. Dr. Avon impressed us with how he took time to make us feel comfortable in his office, answering all our questions about my husband's health and kidney stone problem. Dr. Avon, proactively made recommendations such as surgery to help alleviate my husband's severe kidney stone pain which was exactly what helped and what my husband needed. He also had great bedside manner and diligently followed up with my husband after the surgical procedure. Dr. Avon also has a great sense of humor and overall has great people skills. If you need an urologist, I would recommend Dr Avon. He is very professional, truly caring and his admin at the fremont office is awesome. I felt very welcome as I set up my 1st appointmment. I went to my appointment after I went to see my chiropractor and when I told her I was going to see Dr Avon, she replied "you're in good hands, he is such a great dr" and she went on telling me what he had done for her and her husband. Dr Avon is the reason they were able to conceive 2 beautiful twins. I was very worried about having a cystoscopy done. I had heard from people that had experienced pain but Dr Avon is a pro (my boyfriend's words who was allowed to be with me in the room at the time of the procedure). Dr Avon took the time to explain things and I didn't feel rushed at all. We need more Drs like Dr Avon, it's nice not to feel like a number when you go to an appointment. The office in San Ramon is a little nicer than the one in Fremont but I would go to either one of them. read more

How does one review a doctor, especially a urologist? Not sure, but for the most uncomfortable procedures, you really want a doctor that listens to you, addresses all your needs, and overall, just makes you feel comfortable in regards to what you will go through. I have gone to Dr Avon for my Kidney Stone over 10 years ago that I had to have broken down, a vasectomy a few years back, bladder check, and I had a recent well-check. He is one of the funniest doctors ever, and as I am just talking and laughing with him during my well visit, before you know it, he tells me, time for prostate exam, wait, what? Now, today? And before I knew it, done. Guys, get it done, it will save your life. I am not going to talk about it anymore though; but last note, all procedures, everything that Dr Avon worked on me, went great, no complications, and I highly recommend him to others. My doctor/patient relationship with Dr. Mark Avon began back in 2000 when I was referred to him for prostate cancer screening which eventually culminated in him performing successful prostate surgery on me in 2010, a procedure known as Brachytherapy. Now, thanks to Dr. Avon's thorough approach to treatment of my prostate I will be seeing him only once a year instead of every six months. Oh, I will still get my PSA blood test done every year, but gone are those evaluated PSA tests and biopsies prior to 2010. In the fifteen years I have known Dr. Avon I can say he is a very special man as well as a very talented doctor. You know, " back in the day" doctors tended to be evaluated on their "bed-side manner"; well, I can tell you Dr. Avon's is outstanding. His sense of humor is therapeutic and he dispenses it at just the right time. To sum up; having known Dr. Avon for 15 years I can say from experience that he is a very special and talented doctor as well as a fine man.
