After a nasty mountain bike accident, I was treated at the Walnut Creek wound care center, with Dr. Young as the surgeon. After watching the team in action, I can see that the surgeon is a bit of a scientist, as well as an artist, promoting the healthy healing of a wound. It is not a trivial process. You really have to know what you're doing. I appreciate the dedication and professionalism of Dr. Young. I feel like I was in good hands the entire way. Thank you!

Last august I had a seemingly easy surgical procedure that went awry, these things happen. But Dr. Steven young was the general surgeon called in to repair the damage of having my bowels actually nicked, and he literally saved my life. It was quite an ordeal, with infections, abscesses, pancreatic issues, and finally, a large and painful incisional hernia that couldn't be operated on for four months after the infection ended. Saying that I was scared going into the hernia repair surgery was an understatement. But Dr. Young is so confident, kind, and non stressed I knew I was in great hands. Because of all my previous abdominal surgeries and the emergency one I had last August, Dr. Young originally recommended I consult with a plastic surgeon about doing what's called "components separation" in addition to a mesh to hold in the hernia. I had that consultation, but I decided that I wanted Dr. young to do that specialized surgery himself. At first he was humble and reluctant, but he agreed to do that procedure if it was indicated when he opened me up on March 25, my surgical date two weeks ago. I marvel each day at how beautiful and sculpted my abs look now. I have a six pack, it's really work of art, what he has done for me. And I know that's just the icing on the cake, the internal mesh and hernia fix as well as the reconstruction of 4 to 5 layers of my muscle was a difficult task, but Dr Young did a great job. I used to think I should only find arrogant, conceited, and cocky surgeons, because I heard if you had a surgeon with a good bedside manner and a kind demeanor, he wouldn't be as good. That is completely untrue. Dr Young also runs the John muir wound care clinic, he plays in his Church band, he is a dedicated father to his children and a loyal husband, he represents the best qualities out there. He is supremely confident, but never arrogant. He is patient, and explains things well. He even very subtly told me that losing weight would really help the abdominal hernia repair surgery, and I did, I lost 45 pounds in five months. :) Doctor's orders were a huge motivator, and especially Dr. Young's orders! There was no way I could have gotten through all this over the last eight months without the superior surgical skill as well as the knowledge and experience that Dr. Steven Young has. I wish I could give him ten stars here

Before the procedure, he spoke proudly about his hand technique being more skilled than using a laser machine. Unfortunately, my experience was devastating. The procedure removed layers of skin much more deeply than I expected, and the skin never recovered properly. I was left with permanent scarring and have spent more than 10 years trying to correct the damage and improve the appearance of my face. During my recovery, I was also asked to backdate a release so that he could continue treating me. I found that request deeply troubling and inappropriate. What makes this especially difficult is that I have to see the results every day when I look in the mirror. A procedure that I believed would be simple has had a lasting impact on my appearance and my life. I understand that complications can happen with medical procedures, but my experience has been extremely difficult, and I feel that the depth of the dermabrasion and the resulting scarring were not what I consented to or expected.

No follow up call, no checking in, nothing. Days 4, 5, & 6 I was in the worst pain of my life and every single call to Dr. Maz's office went unanswered & unreturned. Countless calls. Countless voicemail messages. Day 7 my message was angry & desperate and that's when finally someone random from his office called me back and told me to take more Percocet. That was it. Nothing more. So I did and it almost cost me my life. My wife was out of town but thank god over the phone she heard in my voice that the situation was scarily wrong and forced me to go to the ER as she scrambled to catch a flight home. I couldn't drive myself as I could barely function at this point. In the ER I was seen immediately and admitted immediately and that's when I knew I was in trouble. I went into septic shock that next morning. I would soon be told that if I'd waited 1 more day I would've been dead. My kids almost lost their dad because Dr Maz did a appendectomy he would later say must've had a "leaky suture". He chose not to cauterize for a reason he was never able to explain to me. Dr. Maz would make a few angry trips to my hospital room over the next week. He was as unprofessional as anyone could've been. All ego and no empathy whatsoever. During his 3 visits he repeatedly badmouthed the infectious disease doctor who saved my life. He was only concerned with his reputation and how he was being 2nd guessed. His most memorable visit was when he roughly drained the blood from a tube in my stomach and literally emptied it into a paper coffee cup that was sitting next to my bed as it splattered on me, then he dropped the blood-filled paper cup in the sink for someone else to clean up. I kid you not, this actually happened in an American hospital. Him, his office staff and the way they do 'business' is haphazard and dangerous to say the least. Routine surgery is only routine if the surgeon understands that he's not God. Dr Maz does not understand this. Avoid him at all cost.
