Dr. Gopal Sachdeva was my doctor. Several things went wrong with the radiology on my breast. (1) He asked me if I were using lotion after the treatments, and I said yes - but no one told me to put the lotion all around the breast. I only put it on top after each treatment. The radiation burn that I got was on the bottom of the breast, which I never saw. (2) When the doctor discovered the burn he sort of laughed and said he had seen worse, and then asked the assistant to come take a picture of it. When I got home I looked in the mirror - it was awful - the skin under my breast was GONE and what I saw was just red stuff - muscle? (3) he told me to put a dressing on it 3 times a day using a hydrogen peroxide solution and then to dry it in front of a fan before applying the antibiotic cream - this 3 times a day. I got a cold standing in front of a fan three times a day. The solution hurt like crazy. And the burn was not healing. I had an appointment scheduled with my skin doctor (checking on a pre cancer on my face she had taken care of few years ago) and she told me to switch from hydrogen peroxide to saline, and she told me to use a HYDROCOLLOID DRESSING which was fantastic. You can shower with it on, and you change it just once a week. No more 3 times a day freezing in front of a fan. The burn finally healed. All of the STAFF at Epic Care were terrific!!! The parking garage ticket machine is NOT made for short women recovering from breast surgery. I had to get completely out of my car going in and out each day. It was awful. Just: put the lotion ALL AROUND the breast - not just where the x-rays went in. read more

Dr. Valery Uhl is absolutely wonderful. She blends knowledge and deep expertise in radiation oncology with true compassion. She's a powerhouse, bringing energy, positivity and answers that make radiation less scary and easier to understand. Dr. Uhl is surrounded by the most incredibly skilled team in Robyn, Diane and Michelle, who work together in perfect harmony--fast, spot on, supportive and confident. They were completely professional, moving my drape to cover me, ensuring I was in exactly the correct position each and every time. As they said, this is radiation and "we need perfect." I saw this team for radiation treatment every day for a straight month. They are warm, personable, and I am so grateful for them all--the exceptional care they provided and the kindness they showed made my experience easier and so much better in every way. I found the front office staff to be helpful and efficient--after seeing me a few times, they would smile, check me in and wave me back to treatment. They made it a breeze, even when I hit traffic and was running a few minutes late! Note that you can easily park for free in the garage and validate your parking ticket at the desk yourself without waiting--another small detail I really appreciated. read more

Dr. Valery Uhl is amazing. I always have a ton of questions and she patiently works through them with me. I had a lot of anxiety about radiation and she took the time I needed to discuss the risks and benefits. I am grateful to her for her understanding and compassion as well as her expertise and experience. She is a super star who knows her stuff but is approachable and kind. Also... I want to give a huge shout out to her radiation therapists Diane, Michelle, and Robyn. They took the time I needed to orient me and answer my questions during my set up appointment which put me at ease. They are meticulous about getting everything right and I don't feel awkward if have to ask a question or ask them to check my position. They are incredibly efficient and stay on schedule (which makes a huge difference when you are going every day), but they are kind and friendly and never make me feel rushed. Make sure you understand the process and the timeline before you get started. I was thrown by the logistics and had to reorganize my life quite a bit. But I wouldn't go anywhere else and I wouldn't want anyone I love to go anywhere else either. read more

The worst scheduling experience ever. There are 3 different numbers that will direct you to the same automated options. I wanted to reach the Emeryville location each time but there is no waiting on the phone, no waitlist, no next available caller. You hear some ringing, and get either told to leave a voicemail, or voicemail is full. What am I suppose to do? I smell a lawsuit for playing with peoples lives by making it as difficult as possible for patients to reach an actual person on the other end. It's ridiculous, and congratulations, this is the only location I've ever had a problem with making an appointment. It shouldn't be this hard. read more

Physicians have been great, but ancillary staff can be very rude, insensitive, & condescending, which is a shame given the sensitive nature of their patient population. I witnessed a technician approach an elderly frail woman with a walker seated in the waiting area, she attempted to lift the woman out of her seat without asking her if she needed assistance. The elderly woman had to tell the technician "Don't touch me, I can do it myself" . The technician did not apologize, & the elderly woman proceeded to use her walker to ambulate to the treatment area. I had the unfortunate experience of also interacting with ancillary staff at this location. They spoke over me as if I were an inanimate object lying on a table, literally I was on the exam table, talking about what they were going to to my body. I advocated for myself, letting staff know I was not OK with what they were doing & was asked in an extremely condescendingly manner " Do you need a break?" instead of being listened to. They removed my gown exposing by naked chest, without asking or telling me they were going to do so, or why. I subsequently advocated for myself again, & the technician condescendingly asked me if I had read the consent form I signed. This is the same technician throughout by the way. I even tried to appeal to this individual's human side, describing how difficult it is to have to need this type of treatment. The technician again, with her back to me, sarcastically said " I understand you're going through a lot right now" . I was appalled by the cruel insensitivity of this person. She called in her senior colleague who told me they are following the protocol set forth for patients by the physicians . Are these people even human? Again, I explained how difficult being a patient needing these services can be, the senior technician then asked me how I would like to be spoken to & said " You just want to be heard". After this, again, the same technician from earlier in my writing proceeded to mockingly describe every action she was engaging in regarding my care. I am sure they labeled me as a "Difficult patient" because I advocated for myself. It is very sad that patients are seen as lumps of flesh to be worked on, instead of vulnerable individuals who are suffering with potentially terminal illness who are just trying to survive. read more

As plenty of the other reviews have stated, this location really is so unprofessional, dysfunctional, and disorganized it's unreal. I'm making a point to be specific about the Emeryville location because I was seen at a different Epic Care location prior to this one and it was the complete opposite in every way. My doctor was professional, friendly, knowledgeable, and more; we had excellent rapport. The front desk staff was phenomenal -- professional, organized, friendly, and respectful. I really hate that I had to switch locations but that one was just too far from home. The doctor I have now at the Emeryville Location is fine and his medical staff is good. However, the front office staff? Yikes. I think the worst part is that this office staff runs the office 10x better than it used to run. I noticed a major overhaul when they replaced the office manager and a few staff members. It's much, much better now. As others have said, trying to get anyone on the phone is still nearly impossible -- their system of calling, leaving a message w| some random person, and hoping for a call back in a decent time frame leaves a lot to be desired. The front office staff (most; all except one person) is NOT at all respectful, mindful, or considerate when it comes to maintaining patient privacy or confidentiality -- they could not care any less than they do right now and couldn't pretend to if their lives depended on it. Let me stop here though becauase I have a laundry list and my goal is not to tear these people or this place down. I really want them to improve, to take the feedback seriously, & not simply for PR sake but for the sake of the patients, who are not well! This is not a typical clinic, every patient is battling a potentially fatal chronic illness and there for treatment, trying to survive & thrive. Last thing any if us need is stress, which exacerbates//triggers illness. Let me end this update by echoing an earlier statement -- Terrence is Epic Care, Emeryville's saving grace. That man deserves a raise and a couple of weeks of paid vacation. Just give me a heads up when he goes so I know not to try to get anything accomplished at EC:C while he's gone. Laura, Blanca and Jennifer were quite helpful. They managed to push through and get my father the meds he needed. Epic care front office has struggled to get back to patients and return calls, but in this situation, I found some very helpful people at Epic care who went over and beyond. I found communicating through the patient portal with my father's physician to be very effective and his doctor responded quickly and found people to help us. They made multiple attempts to ensure my father got what he needed. I appreciate their time and effort and not giving up on us even after submitting the same paperwork and information multiple times. I do agree with other reviews though, the reception and front office staff at the Emeryville office need more training on patient care professionalism and etiquette. read more

My mother had Dr. Yan as her oncologist, and he provided excellent and compassionate care for her as he helped her with her best course of treatments. He always answered all of our questions, and he was also prompt through the messaging portal. The wait time sometimes might be a little long, but that's always because Dr. Yan is spending time helping other patient. When he does make time for us, it never feels rushed, and we always have a plan forward. The chemotherapy nurses are so kind and friendly as well. She's going through a radiation treatment course now, and we feel well taken care of on that side as well. Front desk was always pleasant to work with every time we came to check in for appointments. I was referred to Dr. Goodwin due to Stage 4 breast cancer. Between her and Dr. Marshall, the medical oncologist, I felt very well taken care of. I'm a researcher and they were happy to discuss anything that I had found out and honestly, were always a step ahead. The oncology nurses, Vanessa and Anne who I dealt with primarily, were true professionals. I had only one issue, brought it to the attention of Dr. Goodwin and it was immediately resolved. If one must go through such a life changing Dx, I can safely say that you would be in good hands at Epic Care. I noticed a few people were unhappy with the front desk but from my experience they were very helpful. Queen, who works the front desk always has a smile on her face which is comforting when you walk in knowing that you are facing down some nasty medical issues. Billing is confusing when you are dealing with so many hospitals, insurance, outside doctors etc. I found that calling the billing department and asking for help was easy and they were gracious enough to explain what was going on with insurance. All in all a great medical group which I highly recommend. read more

Dr. Melnyk does take his time with you, but getting your medical record reports sent, communicating with the office staff, and getting them to pick up the phone when you call are all way below par in their Emeryville office. On 3 separate occasions, three weeks apart, I called the office in the morning, with the call never returned. You have to press the "doctors and pharmacies only" option to get anyone to answer-after the 20th ring. Apparently I am not the only reviewer who believes this organization's Emeryville office doesn't have a clue how to run a medical service. The reviews on Indeed.com and Glassdoor- both only 2 star ratings - tell it all. Apparently, they don't pay clerical and support staff enough money, and they don't "call themselves on the phone"-the basic way you periodically check that your company is providing good customer service. I have liked my Dr. here but agree with others who say it's impossible to get anyone to call back and no one answers the phone. I get a call, telling me to schedule a scan and am never able to do that when I have to call back. This place seems impossible to deal with. Maybe the doctors need to hire more people as they seem too busy to respond. Very frustrating. Where else can one go? The doctors here are quite good - Dr Bailey and and Dr Marshall are kind and smart and good - if you can ever get to them. But the office itself is impenetrable and not focused on patient service. I had a appointment last week and waited in line 15 minutes to even check-in, making me late for my appointment. They had one receptionist working. The stress of being late for an appointment to get the results of a cancer biopsy is brutal. It's also impossible to get anyone on the phone who can actually answer any questions, and they say someone will call you back and they never do. Questions about test results, procedures, basic questions for your doctor go unanswered. It's like the staff doesn't realize the majority of the patients they are helping are in some some stage of cancer diagnosis or treatment. read more

I want to say we will forever kiss the ground he walks on for this referral. Now let's talk about Epic Care. Epic is a perfect name as the care my husband has received has been Epic, kind, compassionate, humane, loving, I could go on and on. Dr. Natalie Marshall is a no nonsense tell it like it is, cross your t's dot your i's, powerful, warm and compassionate woman. She is everything any human being could hope for in an Oncologist. Epic No Care is what I have been referring to this health care facility. This review does not reflect how I feel about my doctors and nurses in the infusion center. My frustration is with the front desk and the phone system. The front desk people are bored, disgruntled and seem as if they would rather be anywhere else than where they are. They provide a fresh look at how care does NOT begin with a warm welcome. And if you ever phone in... goodness what a terrible experience that is. If you can get past the numerous phone prompts, the mail box to leave a message is often full. What kind of care is that? I have been so frustrated with this place and have never felt like the care I received was worth the frustration. I would check out other facilities to see how they treat you. read more

My new place to go, as I'm following my Oncologists, even though I'm Cancer Free 10 yrs.

Among the worst communication I've ever been on the receiving end of (that's a stretch because it's hard to get information out of the office staff even when you're having surgery in 4 days!) from so-called medical professionals in my life. And I've had back surgery before. I wish I didn't have to go through them anymore but I need to at this point and it honestly makes me feel so uncomfortable to go through with it dealing with this level of incompetence when it comes to scheduling, phone calls and paperwork. I saw Dr. Liu about a month ago after a gall bladder attack and he recommended surgery right away. I wanted to schedule it as soon as possible. After trying to stay on top of the office staff, they said they had not received pre-approval from my insurance yet. I called my insurance who indicated they had no requests for me. When I called Epic Care back to tell them that, like magic, all of a sudden that afternoon they had all they needed. They then proceeded to schedule a surgery WITHOUT CONSULTING ME ABOUT THE DATE which happened to be the Monday after this phone call which was a Thursday. Apparently unaware of the fact that people have jobs and lives they may need to get in order if they're going to be out of commission for a week and maybe need more than 2 days notice. I was getting calls from the surgery center about pre-op instructions and passed around from scheduler to scheduler at Epic Care. Finally got someone halfway competent on the phone who rescheduled and told me she would cancel the first appointment - guess what -- she did not actually do that (which I found out later). At this point she told me the time I would need to check in and what time the surgery would take place. A week before the surgery I'm having a call with the surgery center who told me the surgery would take 3-4 hours -- the doctor had told me it would take less than 1 hour. Pre-op also said to confirm with my doctors office when to arrive. So I call Epic Care again to ask these questions and confirm what the doctor has told me, and to see if I can get my medications ahead of time so I don't have to fill them on the day I have my surgery after I've come home. Turns out the time has changed, no one ever told me, they never sent out paperwork to me (but they sent out paperwork for the first surgery they scheduled without consulting with me, which never happened). I asked if they could email me the information, they said they can't, then 5 minutes later ask me if I received an email invitation to an online patient portal. I ask what email address they sent it to and it turns out they don't have my email address on file. So first they can't email me, then they can, then they ask if I received an invitation to a portal they could have never invited me to because they don't even have my email address. Oh, and the info wasn't in the portal when I got there, it took sending another message. But what is in there is a post-op appointment that *I NEVER SCHEDULED* and which time had also never been told to me. What a freaking disaster. It's clear they don't care that having surgery is stressful to their patients. This is like below minimum acceptable level of care. 100% recommend going somewhere else. And if you have to go here, be prepared for utter incompetence. read more

My mom was referred to Epic Care by her PCP and paired with Dr. Santoli. Dr. Santoli, without knowing what kind of cancer my mom had, wanted to start chemo ASAP. We didn't want to start treatment until we knew what we were dealing with. Thinking our appointment was to review the results from the CT, the nurse was ready to begin treatment on the spot, which we refused. Dr. Santoli read the CT results and informed us that my mom had neuroendocrine cancer similar to that of Steve Jobs, which was slow growing and could be slowed by chemo so that my mom would be comfortable. We asked for the records so we could get a second opinion, and was told by an oncologist in Redwood City that my mom had a rare, aggressive form of neuroendocrine cancer and would be lucky if she lived a week. She did not. In all, it was three weeks from being diagnosed and dying. Dr. Santoli's office did little to comfort or assist our family. On the day of our mom's death, his office called to follow up with us about her care. We told them that their services were no longer needed. Dr. Santoli called immediately upon our having dismissed his office and said that neuroendocrine cancer is genetic and that his office provides genetic testing and my sister and I should come in to have that done. I asked my PCP if neuroendocrine cancer is genetic and if there are any tests to detect it. I was told that it is not necessarily genetic, and that there are no test to detect it. Our family felt like our wishes were not heard or respected by Dr. Santoli and his staff. We also felt it was insensitive of him to call and try to scare money out of us on the day of our mother's death. read more

I went to Dr. Melnyk for a second opinion and liked that he was on top of all the current research and clinical trials. So I went with him for my chemo. The clinic is especially nice. A special mention for the staff who are all very warm and friendly. The place has a sunny, clean and open feel to it and there are only 2-5 people at a time so it never feels crowded. They have very nice and comfy recliners. I have heard from others that a small clinic has an advantage over larger centers in these ways: you meet the same people each time and they get to know you and what you prefer; there is less waiting time; you don't have to go from one office to another to get various tests done since it is all in the same place. And that has been my experience as well! read more

OMG if you are diagnosed with Breast Cancer, do NOT go here! I don't mean walk, RUN away. Ask your primary care physician to find another facility. The admin team is horrible, you can read that on other reviews, they are rude, they do not record or pass on messages and they forget things 5 minutes after they are told to do them by the doctors, you need to remind them what the Drs said. Now, they are already filing for Insurance for something that is weeks away, before knowing what test results say, before they even tell you what the plan is! The insurance company has sent me 3 letters saying the service is denied for lack of information. 2 of the letters were dated two week or more after I cancelled all my appointments and tests at Epic care Emeryville. The surgeon pushes for full mastectomy after being told by several (including my current Dr) that a lumpectomy would be more than adequate. They must be having financial issues. On a Friday afternoon, there was no one in the waiting room and the front desk said its been like that all day and she is so bored!! really promotes confidence. When I complained to the Dr about the systems in place, the lack of follow thru and the absence of communication, all she said was that there was a new office person in charge and she was fixing things, and she was suprised that stuff had been fixed that no one thought could be fixed.... This is the person who would be holding a scalpel over me.... NO THANK YOU. There are good facilities all over the Bay area, I moved to a nationally recognized facility and could not be happier. My team is working together, trying to make a difficult situation as easy as possible, and moving forward in the right order, with full explanations and follow thru. Do not put up with this kind of incompetence when you have other things that you should be focused on. read more

I was over the moon when I was first referred to Epic Care and Dr. Abe. I made a wonderful connection with her after feeling that no one listening to me or doing a very good job explaining what the term "dense breasts" meant or why I was suddenly being sent for a bunch new tests that were all painful for something that was NOT cancer, but COULD be SOMEDAY? Really? Dr. Abe took the time to explain in detail, for the first time how and why I ended up on this merry go round and set up a care program that I could live with. Then without warning when I went to book my next appt. I was told she no longer worked there. NO EXPLANATION, AND NO INFORMATION ON WHERE SHE IS. I am happy to say that after posting this on Yelp, Epic Care contacted me and explained that they had tried to send letters to all of her patients and somehow I was missed. They contacted me almost immediately and gave me the information I needed to contact my doctor and I am very grateful to have this misunderstanding behind me, but I encourage everyone to NEVER abuse Yelp, because it is a powerful tool to use when looking for what you need and reading about other people's experiences can guide you to better results. read more

Dr. Karen Goodwin and Dr. Natalie Marshall were amazing during my grooling and scary time of Breast Cancer diagnosis and treatment. The doctors and their staff always acknowledged my presence and answered any question I had. And if they didn't have the answer right then, the doctor will call me immediately with the answer. And boy is the infusion center nice and clean with large comfy chairs. and with large windows that bring in alot of light, it doesn't feel depressing and hospital like. I actually looked forward to radiation because they are so welcoming and make radiation efficient. They run on time, work together in a very collaborative manner and make radiation rather fun if you can imagine that. This review is only about scheduling non-urgent appointments by phone, NOT about the medical care or in-person support staff or urgent care scheduling. EPIC doctors need to have the phone scheduling re-organized so there is consistency and follow-through with individual patients by routine scheduling staff. As a patient it is frustrating to get reminder voicemails from different individuals giving me different call-back numbers and leaving me slightly different messages. Worse, I am unable to reach them. When I call the numbers given to me I get voicemail or an off-site operator. In the best case I get a random person -- not the person who left me the voicemail -- who is ignorant of my specific scheduling issues. I know 2lst century medicine can be an impersonal and cost-conscious business, but there should still be decent customer service. read more

Dr. Kirman has been outstanding on my breast reconstruction journey following a bilateral masectomy 9/2018, as has my expert Medical Oncologist Dr. Natalie Marshall, and my super knowledgeable Radiologist Dr. Valery Uhl. All of these doctors are from Epic Care Team in Emeryville, CA. I sought long and hard to find all of them for several months following my breast cancer diagnosis in February of this year. Prior to discoving Epic, I went through several doctors from John Muir Medical in Walnut Creek (BASS Group) before I found these folks that were referred to me by a non John Muir Cancer specialist. You need to go out of your current network to get impartial referrals. LISTEN to your intuition when seeking doctors and care professionals - do not accept just anyone recommended - meet them and take your time selecting them.
