Wow... absolutely ridiculous!!! I ordered a 4 piece chicken meal and 3 piece catfish to be told my catfish would be cold! I asked what she's that mean? The guy said we don't drop anything past 8 so what's left is what you get and our fish is cold!!! I pretty much never expect much from fast food, particularly in the service department. But the sweet guy working the drive-through window at Golden Chick (whose name, regrettably, I failed to get) completely made my day. I pulled up with a completely unplanned large order for a spontaneous Fat Tuesday celebration at my office. He was ridiculously upbeat, brought the huge bags out to the car for me in freezing cold weather, and thoughtfully included some free rolls with our order. He went way above and beyond, and his unexpected kindness was a breath of deliciously-fried-chicken-scented air. The food was awesome, too. The crispy fried exterior belied the juiciness of the chicken inside. The sides were all delicious, as well. And I fed our entire office for a mere $70. In short, two wings up. read more

I saw there was a Golden Chick in front of me and since I never been to one I thought I would try it and boy I'm glad I did because the chicken tenders were so tender and they were good size also. Personally, not sure I would run back here for the chicken, but almost everything else I really liked a lot. The catfish is excellent. This is southern style catfish with a light cornmeal crust -- my favorite. Chicken was juicy, but had a lot of breading that wasn't really crisp - a bit greasy for my tastes. Very meaty pieces though and to be fair, my husband loved it. He thought the chicken was perfect. The only sides we tried were the cole slaw and mac and cheese. We both loved the mac and cheese -- great quality, noodles weren't mushy at all and the cheese had a nice sharp taste. The cole slaw was a little mayonaisy/sweet for me, but my husband thought it was perfect. He thinks I like my slaw too dry. Yeast rolls were great and buttery. Other sides are fried okra, green beans, mashed potatoes and corn on the cob. Too bad they don't have greens. I would love a nice southern style plate with cornmeal fried catfish, greens and mac and cheese. Why can't you find that in Austin?? Everyone was very nice there, too. read more

This is my biggest guilty pleasure behind Starbucks. I'm terrible, I know. But if you don't like golden chicken, we can't be friends. It should be a requirement when I meet people. I would just like everyone to know that Golden Chick chicken is awesome chicken but this location is run by some awful people. The men there have continuously disrespected loyal customers and made rude comments and gestures. They told my mom she was a "crazy lady" and told her to "get out" while waiving their hands in her face. She went to go get her favorite chicken salad salad but was upset about how her son had been treated by them previously. There was no one else in the restaurant and the guys working there, twice her size, who laughed at her, should be fired immediately. Customer service is one of the most important aspects of the food business and people like that make places like the local, delicious Golden Chick a crappy place to go. read more

I've never been to Golden Chick before until last weekend. I'm from Baton Rouge where Raising Canes is king and I'm guessing this is Texas' equivalent. Prices are very reasonable but it is a fast food chain so that is to be expected. My friends and I ordered the "family" serving which tends to be a better deal than ordering individually. The mac and cheese side was nothing memorable and reminded me of just the instant Kraft mac and cheese someone could easily make at home. Wylie 501 S. Hwy 78, We have been here on other occasions in the past. we have always liked the place because it was clean, and service was great. The last time we went we realized it had been sold to another party. The original staff was not there, the " new manager" did not seem to know the flow of things. we got our order after waiting a little longer than usual. My wife decided upon the traditional ice cream cone. The machine was not turned on and the counter was littered with parts of cones, and not clean. He did not seem to understand pre opening routine. This time 9/4/18 we entered and ordered, Cashier Toniya apparently did not have his register drawer, so had to wait for change. The ice cream machine was there but turned sideways(?) it was not plugged in. We had to search for the pepper shaker, found one. Then another table needed it and shared it with them. I looked up and the bulbs in the ceiling fan/lights were missing and globes gone as if It appears they are broke but not expending $$, and that rest room cleaning, and dining room condiments are not priority. However, in the middle of relocating to our new home, Golden Chick became option #1 for dinner, and I have to say, it was really good! The curb appeal is lacking, and gave me the feeling the food was going to be greasy and sub-par. But, the fried chicken was very good, hot, moist, flavorful, and not greasy at all. The chicken salad sandwich delivers home-coked style chunks of moist chicken, sliced grapes, and nuts in a flavored mayo on a sweet bun. I have been on the quest for the perfect chicken box. Golden chick is up there. The chicken was fried to perfect, not dirty grease, the right oil temp and nice portion sizes. I think there is corn meal or something in their breading that gives it a contrasting inconsistentcy that throws me off a bit. Their gravy is eh but the Mac n cheese is amazing. I was excited about the corny dogs during fair season. I got one about a month ago - really expensive; I could get 4 strips for the same price. It was fair and hot, crispy outside. Two weeks later, I order another. Got home and took the thing out of the bag ... OMG! That was not eatable food and should have never been served! Had apparently been recooked or something ... burned on bottom end, had no dough in the middle, so weiner was burned and hard there. Just horrible! I must say that this place is one of my favorite places to grab a bite in Austin. The staff is always super friendly and helpful. The menu is fairly large but I only ever get one thing and that's the chicken tenders with fries, a roll, gravy, and a sweet tea. I'm pretty sure that they put crack in the chicken batter because it's so good that you just keep coming back for more. They use a high-quality, white-meat and it's fried to perfection with their delicious batter. The fries are good if you like them greasy and the gravy is a basic cream gravy that obviously comes from a dry pouch mix but is still pretty tasty. The rolls are hit-or-miss with their texture; some can have crispy outsides or aren't buttered quickly enough after coming out of the oven but when you get a good one, it's divine. The sweet tea is sweet enough to cause instant diabetes so I always do a 70/30 sweet tea to unsweet tea mix. When I buy my son food there, the cookie that comes with the kids meals are bigger than his face so he loves that. I, however, have to play the bad guy since I only give him some if it after he eats and the rest later. They just did a renovation about a year ago so it's not the dingy, hole-in-the-wall I was originally endeared to but it's now a nice place to take friends that I want to share this gem with. I'm pretty sure that each Golden Chick is an individually owned franchise because, I've tried other Golden Chicks and their chicken just don't match up the quality of this one. Totally dissatisfied! I placed an order Uber eats, for pickup 1 family size macaroni and cheese and when I got there at the arrival time. They told me they had ran out. Why wouldn't they stop the order or contact me that way I wouldn't have drove there for nothing! This Golden Chick location is exceptional. We stopped there last night around 7:00 pm for takeout and I could not get over how delicious everything was. For example, the salads were super chilled and fresh - not a wilted or brown edge to be seen on the lettuce. We also ordered their fried shrimp and the staff prepared them perfectly. The catfish was delicious, too. I got the sense the manager seeks to delight the customer with little extra touches I haven't seen at its other franchise locations. There were fresh lemon wedges wrapped carefully in plastic wrap nestled among the shrimp and catfish and there were store-made crouton packages to add to the salads. The crouton were made using their famous rolls and were an unexpected and tasty addition to the salad. Do not miss their iced tea, un-sweet or sweet it is full-bodied and robust. So I'm 90% certain I have written a review for here before and it is gone now? I have one dirty crack habit I refuse to let anyone know about (other than my brother, who is equally addicted). It is despite my hatred of almost all fast food joints, I love Golden Chick... so.. so... much. About 10 years ago (different golden chick in the DFW area) I use to fake doctor notes (told them I did monthly allergy shots, and they bought it) that I had to leave class early so I can make it all the way over to the other side of town so I could get Golden Chick for lunch while in High School. Even better they did a deal that allowed students of their near by high school to get 50 cents off, and I always lied about that too. The chicken is magical. Crispy and flavorful batter. Super moist and juicy chicken. I have never felt it was too greasy, or too dry. The real secret however, is you ask for the packets of spice. It is the best spice mix, with a bit of heat and alot of flavor, I have ever found. I put way to much on so it stings a bit and I love the pain. I even know some friends that don't like hot and spicy food, but admit to using a bit of this stuff because it is so good. Best Chicken Strips Anywhere. Chick Fil A is the only other fast food I will get, but I seriously can't decide which has better chicken (they are very different, so I get them depending on how I'm feeling). I did stiff you a star however, and I will stick by it. First: Golden Chicks in Dallas offer free ice cream (or ice milk, whatever, it is free and delicious) Your fries kind of suck. I'm not the biggest fan of crinkle fries. Once again grew up on these delicious oh so bad for you double fried version. I can't find a single golden Chick that still has those types, but they were the best "thicker" fries from any fast food joint. Bring these back and bring the trans fat with them, they were good, crinckle are bad and many times soggy. One time I was here and the Manager called an employee an idiot, right in front of me. I couldn't believe it. He is always very nice to costumers and myself, and he seems to hustle alot... but every time I go back I think of that time. Maybe it was just a bad moment, because other than getting frustrated a few times I haven't heard him say anything bad since. Still doesn't seem like the best person to work for, but does seem like an effective manager. I also saved the second best thing for last: Raspberry Lemonade is the greatest must sugar filled drink, and you are the only people I have ever seen serve it. read more

This place USED to be a great chicken place, Not anymore. It seems they've hired people who have no customer service skills. The woman at the drive thru window had such a bad attitude that it got in the way of her taking down a simple order, and when I told her she gave me the wrong drink size she slammed the widow in my face , and Proceeded to fill the large cup to the brim with ice out of spite. Then I asked for her name so I could complain to her manager and she refused then she tells me she is the manager! Then she slams the window in my face again mid sentence and walks away, It's unfortunate the the management at this place is so bad that it can't even be Courteous to their customers. read more

I'm pretty sure that this place is one of the top ten contributors to the existence of my man-tits. Our lunch crew eats here at least once a week. Be sure to arrive early and avoid the rush if you're actually planning on eating there and not getting your food to go. There are only about six tables inside, and a couple of folding tables outside. As far as the food goes, I usually stick with the tenders. The #1 combo (four tenders, gravy, fries, a yeast roll, and a drink) is a good-sized meal, or the the #4 (same as #1, but with seven tenders) if you're having one of those "I sho' am hongry" days. Sometimes, I'll get the three piece regular ol' fried chicken combo, but I can never seem to finish it all. Be forewarned that the regular chicken is super crunchy and harbors a LOT of grease.
