I called Golden Bear to troubleshoot a furnace that kept shutting off after 15 minutes of run time. Ricardo came over, and he figured out that my recent roofing contractor had fastened the furnace roof vent too tightly to the vent pipe thereby restricting the exhaust flow and causing the furnace to shut down. A simple fix, but nobody prior had figured it out. It's a lesson to make sure that when a new roof is installed that the roof vents need to be inspected when finished to make sure they still have proper ventilation. read more

(Finally got some time to write a summary for the episode.) tldr; You would like to hire capable, responsible and honest people. Golden bear is none of these. Don't be fooled by Yelp's ratings like I was. Read my story before you decide to use them. Find a qualified installer from the manufacturer's web site and choose one with good Yelp review. You won't waste time and money like I did. I hired Golden bear to install HVAC and tankless water heater. For the HVAC, one of the register is falling out. For the water heater, Tamim asked me to pay the full amount before the job was done. They water heater didn't work because they didn't install the check valve. Tamim refused to fix it nor they had any idea what was wrong. I found the issue and told them. Tamim refused to admit it. Instead, Tamim used the manufacturer's 10 year warranty to threathen me and ask me to get his trust. Tamim claimed I bad mouthed him on Yelp. He admitted that all I said was true. The full version: I hired a real prefessional to fix the installation. He also identified many other issues. He was shocked that the work was done so poorly. Following is his testimony: **************************************************** Original installation was performed with isolation valves upside down. The unit would not be able to be isolated in order to perform annual maintenance required. The flexible gas line installed only supported a maximum of 120,000 BTU's with is not sufficient for a 199,000 BTU unit. I removed the 1/2" piping and flexible gas line and replaced it with 3/4" gas piping and a flexible gas line. The dedicated return line was not installed with a hose bib to bleed the system properly and also did not have a check valve to prevent crossover. I installed a hose bib before the check valve so that way the system can be purged when needed. The condensation line did not have a air gap installed which can prevent the system from backing up inside the unit and also so the condensation can flow freely. The condensation line is also dripping directly on the the concrete near the foundation without any type of drainage or condensation neutralizer. ***************************************************** I attached a photo to show the issues. The manufacturer's manual clearly tells how to do it correctly. Golden bear didn't follow the instructions. Besides the incompetence, Golden Bear didn't work like professionals. They broke their own words frequently. They blamed others for their mistakes. They wouldn't admit that they were wrong after seeing the evidence. Golden Bear didn't test the water heater after the job is "done". I found that they didn't install the gas meter. Tamim told me that's not their job and I should contact PG&E. I had to call Tamim again to tell him that the city said it's your job. Tamim sent Pablo back to install the gas meter. Pablo also tested the water heater. It took a long time to get hot water, which according to Pablo was normal for the first time. The water heater didn't work reliably. Pablo came back with a manual and tuned some parameters. Pablo told me that they didn't have the correct manual when they installed the water heater. It still didn't work. I called / texted Tamim multiple times before he agreed to send Pablo again. Pablo was confused what's wrong for a while and eventually concluded that the hot water line and return line needed to be swapped. Pablo turned off the return line as a temporary solution and said he would come back tomorrow to fix it permanently. Tamim called me the next day saying that Pablo was not coming because they were busy with other projects. I agreed to postpone it. After a month, I contacted Tamim again. He scheduled it for next week. Didn't show up. Tamim apologized when I pinged him and rescheduled one week later. Didn't show up and didn't reply to my text. I complained. Tamim said he won't do it unless I pay him $140 per hour and the job will take 2-3 hours. He didn't even know it's caused by the check valve. Golden bear claimed that it's my general contractor's fault because they marked the water lines wrongly. I hired a plumber to swap the lines. The plumber was confused with the job. He did it anyway. Of course it won't fix it. Silly me that I believed Golden Bear. We figured out that the real culprit was that Golden Bear didn't install a check valve on the return line. I called Pablo, who confirmed that they didn't install the check valve. Golden bear didn't take action, not even an apology. I noticed the falling register and sent a photo to Tamim. No response until he saw the Yelp review. Tamim used manufacturer's 10 year wanranty to threathen me. I called him. Tamim showed no intention of fixing the falling out register, nor apologized for the poor job. He only cared about the Yelp review. He even asked me, a paying customer, to get this trust before he was willing to work with me again. read more

When the installers came, they surprisingly told me that I would need to get a roofer to properly patch up the hole where the line runs to the unit. I was very unhappy because this wasn't made known to me in the consultation or any of the days leading up to the install. I would think that with a service, they would leave things so that you wouldnt have to hire another contractor to come out to finish the job. If they had to hire a roofer themself to patch up the roof properly and add that cost to the install, I wouldn't mind. I wish I was made aware about this from the beginning. Now I have to spend another $800-$1000 to get the roof properly patched and sealed. Negatives aside, the install guys did and great job and they were friendly. I had Golden Bear come install a new A/C and Furnace with Heat Pump in late June 2024. TK came out and quoted me a price with a great promise of multiple rebates I would qualify for. They completed the work on time as promised. However, we had some concerns with our newly installed A/C as we felt it was not very cool especially during the hottest times of the day. They explained that the new A/C systems are like that and are in a sense throttled by energy consumption so it is not working 100% like the inefficient A/C system we changed it out for. Ok, I get that. Unfortunately they did not explain this to me before I authorized work on this, but I accept blame as I should have researched this more. However, they promised that the rebates for this would be really generous and most likely available for me. Well, I finally applied for the Silicon Valley Clean Energy Rebate a few weeks ago and I was told that I am not eligible for this $2,500 rebate because San Jose Clean Energy and not Silicon Valley Clean Energy is my electricity generator. Oooofff! This point was not explained at all to me from TK when he accepted the job. He just said I was eligible for this rebate. Well today, I was officially rejected for this rebate. And to add insult to injury, when the inspector from the City of San Jose came for the final inspection, our new unit did not pass inspection. The inspector looked at the crawlspace where the ducts were and told us that they were touching the floor instead of being suspended off the ground by at least 4 inches. Also, there was a lot of leftover insulation. With these two issues, I failed the inspection. Golden Bear did send someone out to remedy this immediately. But now I am having trouble connecting with the City of San Jose to finally approve the inspection. All in all, it's been a terrible experience. I'm giving three stars cause they eventually get the job done, but the whole experience is unpleasant. - They didn't know the permit requires HERS testing, plus there's a couple small things wasn't taken care off, so the inspection failed the first times. (no HERS test is done before inspection.) - Based on the result of first HERS testing, the duct work was poorly done. The first test result was 90, one worker was onsite that day so he tried very hard to bring it done to 60, but it need to be below 40 to pass. So it takes another guy to come in the other day to fix that. - When quoted for the job, I was asking for the price with permit included. However, the contact was written in a not so clear way (put what's included and what's not in one line), so I thought it's included but it's actually not. OK, maybe just my english is bad. My single story home from 1968 needed a helping hand staying cool in the summer months. At first I decided to get quotes for a more traditional central AC to work with my furnace and ducts. Other companies quoted me higher and wanted to replace my furnace and ducting. I didn't want to pay to replace something that IMO worked just fine, so I went looking for places that would do a ductless system. No duct replacement, and capable of heating and cooling off of electric - which is a nice bonus when the house has solar. I was quoted a Daikin 4-zone ductless system by Golden Bear, in the off-season, and went for it. I've had the system since February and have gotten to make use of both the heating and cooling. Everything is whisper quiet, and keeps the whole house comfortable. I can keep the bedroom chilly at 66 and the living room comfortable at 72/74. The install was very professional and painless. I hit a few snags trying to schedule inspection from the city. At first the inspector said I needed to schedule a longer inspection time. The inspectors were not familiar with the ductless split system and needed time to crawl the attic. One of Golden Bear's team (Marcos) was on-site to explain everything to the inspector (condensate drainage and electrical) which was very helpful. All in all I think the system was a great choice, and the work done by Golden Bear was top notch. I have recommended this to a couple neighbors with the same situation and style of home. read more

Tamim's technician came in to repair an a/c after entire issue was discussed over the phone. The technician diagnosed the issue might be resolved by a hard start kit but he didn't have it, so he had to come back. Golden bear charged me for both visits because their technician was not carrying a very common part ($100 each visit instead of $140). After two visits, the technician said a/c cannot be repaired and should be replaced for which I was given a quote of ~$9k. I asked my old a/c technician for another replacement quote. He asked why are you replacing, checked the fuse which was damaged and a/c was up and running in first 15 mins. The low rating is not for things till now. It is because when I reached out to Tamim, explained the situation and asked him to rectify it - he did nothing after almost 4 weeks, 6-7 emails and a phone call. He 'chose' to not make it right, every single time making an excuse that he didn't get the time for over 4 weeks to basically rectify such a wrong experience for a customer. Our house didn't have a centralized AC, but as new house owners strapped for cash we decided to brave the California Summer thinking it might be ok. Heat wave after heat wave last summer, forced us to reconsider the decision and opt for installing the AC before this summer started. Enter T.K and Golden Bear -- I reached out to Golden Bear since it had awesome reviews on Yelp. TK accommodated my estimate request on short notice despite having a busy schedule, came over and spent close to 45 mins assessing the infrastructure in place, and went over the necessary work to be done. He explained everything patiently, answered all my questions, even opened up one of our vents in the Living room since I complained that something was wrong with it to see if his guys would be able to fix it. None of the other people I got quotes from did that. He eventually sent over a pretty competitive quote the next day. After a little negotiation, we finalized Golden Bear to install the AC and get our furnace upgraded as well to account for extra space in the living room that was previously unaccounted for when the furnace was installed 12 years ago. I signed the contract, sent it back, and was immediately confirmed that the installation would happen 4 days later. T.K confirmed that he'll assign an extra guy to the job so that it can get done in 1 day. The guys who came over to do the installation -- Angelo, Pablo, and Mario were super nice -- wore masks, laid protective tarps over our floors, wore shoe coverings, and did the job very professionally. They arrived at 9 AM and were done by 4.30 PM. I got an appointment with them to fix the external fan on my old AC. Their tech. showed up on time and after an initial inspection told me I needed a new capacitor for the unit. That is not an uncommon problem for older units and I agreed to have it replaced. Subsequently, I was told that there may be a wiring problem too so I told him to go ahead and fix that. But after he had already snipped the wires, he said that the motor was probably bad and needed to be replaced since it was over-heating. I was later informed that because my AC was over 20 yeaars old, they couldn't get that same motor. I then asked if they could find a replacement motor. Since I was selling my house, time was short. They promised to try and after several days of having to chase them, I was told that the best they could do was order one from the original manufacturer, and that could take 2 weeks or more. I agreed to wait. But after 2 weeks, and some more back and forth, they told me that they couldn't actually order it and I was out of luck. Fortunately, I did find 2 other alternatives who told me they could solve my problem, and the issue was resolved in just a few days. But I had to pay for an extra service call and go through a lot of stress and extra effort to resolve the problem. The whole experience left me feeling very harried and having serious doubts about their sincerity - especially since the technician that fixed the problem needed just a day to get a replacement motor. My advice to those wanting an economical solution to keeping an old AC running - this company may not be the one for you. In hindsight, after they told me they could not get a motor for the unit, and didn't get back to me about finding a replacement motor in a timely manner, I should not have continued to rely on them. Trying to get them to find a replacement motor turned out to be a complete waste of time and caused me unnecessary and avoidable stress. While many have given them excellent reviews, I can now completely relate to other reviewers who have had bad experiences with this company. read more
