I interviewed four roofing and exterior companies to replace my worn roof. Three of the companies provided quotes to do the work, after they inspected the roof and attic space. The initial quote from Gold Shield Exteriors was the most competitive of the three. The second company reduced its initial quote 13% for signing within 30-days, then another 15% if I signed on to another discount scheme, then another 17% (!) when it found out I had chosen Gold Shield. The final quote was 44% lower than the initial quote. The third company reduced its initial quote 10% for one of their discount schemes, then another 11% thanks to the sales person's employee discount. Their final quote was 21% less than the initial. The question I have for the two multi-quote companies is, "What could I have done with the thousands of dollars I would have lost if I had agreed to your initial offers?" Gold Shield's initial quote never changed, and I was never subjected to the sales pressure of signing right away in order to take advantage of various discounts. I spent three and a half hours with Taylor, one of Gold Shield's owners. I was impressed with the Gold Shield business plan he described, his extensive experience with the roof and attic issues I was facing, and - most importantly to me - his emphasis that I take as long as necessary to consider their single offer. After I agreed (there really was no reason to take an alternative offer, Gold Shield's was still the most competitive even after all the other's discounts), I met with David, who would be the project manager for providing me with my new roof. Also a very stand-up guy who knows his stuff and is a real pleasure to work with. After an efficient two and a half-day install and a thorough clean-up, it was like they were never here. Gold Shield Exteriors did a full roof replacement on my house. I got quotes from four roofing companies and Gold Shield was the only company that insisted on going inside the house, into the attic to inspect leak damage and any other issues. They took photos of everything they found (good and bad) and made their fixed quote recommendation based on what they found. Other roofers had variable statements in their quotes that allowed them to increase the price based on what they found later. For a job this large ($30K), I wanted to know what the final bill was going to be and Gold Shield was accurate to the penny. More importantly, this company was excellent to work with - great communicators, sending me daily updates of their work (I was out of town during the process) and photographs of their progress. When I called their office, a real person answered the phone. Everyone I talked with at their office was prompt and professional. Dave was my main contact and he was excellent to work with, even returning my calls on the weekend and after hours. Great experience! My roof had a few leaks that were in dire need of repair, and ultimately was decided that I should just get a new roof. Once I decided to move forward with working with GSE they put a tarp on my house to get me covered for a couple weeks until the weather cooperated and they could come over and start the project. A crew came over and everyone was professional, efficient, and friendly. They brought a dumpster and really didn't make too much of a mess. They came in the morning and stayed until after dark. They finished in two days, cleaned as they went, and did a final clean up on the third day and hauled away the dumpster. They made it very clear on what was happening. I feel like I got a very good product too. When they were explaining what exactly I was buying, it seemed to be a far superior product than what I already had on my roof. After all was said and done, GSE even credited me back for some unneeded plywood. Overall, I'm happy with the company and the work they provided. They were by far the most thorough in their walk through and estimate so there were no overages when the job was done. The workers were polite, friendly and very respectful of the property. They removed a double layer of old shingles, tore down and removed an old patio cover, replaced rotten fascia boards, replaced some roof plywood, added more attic vents and replaced the gutters. I needed to replace a roof and some gutters quickly after an unexpected problem. The Gold Shield team was thorough in helping me by providing details of options at several price points.
