    Eel over rice
    Jeff C.

Walking by in the Financial District, we spotted an interesting-looking restaurant named Goku Kitchen at 26 Cedar St, and curiosity pulled us right in. We were promptly seated--no wait, which was a nice surprise for a casual drop-in. The menus are super cool; they feel like little children's books with thick pages and a small, handheld size that makes flipping through them fun. The entire decor is heavily anime-inspired, leaning hard into Dragon Ball Z themes--think character motifs everywhere, from the walls to the tableware. I'm not really an anime fan myself, but even I have to admit the vibe was very cool to look at and added a unique, playful energy to the spot without feeling over-the-top gimmicky. For food, I ordered the eel over rice (a standout donburi-style dish) and the pork and shrimp wontons. My wife went with the pork wontons and a smashed cucumber salad. The wonton soups came in smaller portions, which actually worked out perfectly since it left room to try more items--but wow, they were extremely delicious! The broth was rich and flavorful, and the wontons had great texture and filling. The eel over rice was fantastic--the eel was perfectly prepared, tender, and the seasoning was spot-on, with that savory-sweet balance that made every bite addictive. Seating-wise, the bench setups were comfortable, and even the stools were surprisingly comfy for a quick meal. We didn't notice a bathroom during our visit (maybe it's tucked away), but overall, the ambiance was great--cozy, themed, and energetic in a fun way. One note: the restaurant is on the smaller side, so it's not ideal for large groups (think 30 or more people). It feels more suited to couples, small parties, or solo diners. We loved it enough that we'll definitely go back to Goku Kitchen to try other dishes on the menu--the Asian fusion mix (Chinese, Japanese influences) looks promising. If you're in lower Manhattan and want something tasty with a cool, anime twist, this spot is worth checking out! Highly recommended--solid flavors in a memorable setting.

The atmosphere 10/10 super cute cozy restaurant. I got the beef soup it had a sweet taste I wasn't expecting so I didn't really like that if it wasn't sweet I would give it a higher rating I'll say a 4/10. I got the passion fruit jasmine tea sooo good! 10/10 My friend got the udon noodles she really liked it 10/10. She got the strawberry latte she said it was ok because she didn't know it was made with whole milk when she doesn't drink that so if you don't like cows milk you most likely won't like it. I didn't like that they don't have a public restroom for customers so that sucks but it makes sense since it's a pretty small space. It's a cute/fun experience to have at least once.

I work near Goku Kitchen in the Financial District. I've gotten takeout for lunch couple times. Very nice and friendly staff in a fun environment. The pork shrimp wonton noodle soup is very good, and somehow manages to stay hot during the walk back to the office.

This is a small ramen spot that is super unique. Great for fans of dragonball. The place does not have a lot of seating though so be prepared to wait, reserve seats ahead of time, or share the table with others. The food is delicious though. Definitely worth the wait if you're looking for simple, delicious food and anime.

First time here with my family for my son's birthday. Place is positioned down a side block where I happened to get lucky with parking. Gotta pay the meter but hey it's something. Once you get into the establishment you think you entered an anime time warp. They seemed to decorate the place with every dragon ball figure made. The dopest piece was the huge goku statue in the back of the restaurant. Good anime tunes that brought the place alive. We were accommodated with seating due to how small the place. We were sitting by the door but the server was kind of enough to put us in a warmer spot. The waiter took our order which consisted of chicken dumplings for my daughter, curry chicken noodle for me, my son had ramen soup and my wife had a beef with rice that came in the shape of a cool bear. I also ordered a strawberry milk that was delicious. They cups of water were themed as the plates. The dishes were accompanied with chop sticks but if you don't know how to eat with that you can ask for regular silverware. The whole experience was enjoyable. They even came out and sing happy birthday with a complimentary cheese cake with matcha ice cream that my son enjoyed. The only thing is that if need to use the bathroom you have to search for one outsides luckily I was able to find a bakery across the street that allowed me to use the bathroom. I would recommend this spot to anyone‼

Absolutely love this spot! They have everything from Chinese food, Japanese food & Malaysian food all in one :) would've never expected a spot like this in the fidi area. The interior was heavily decorated with dragon ball Z memorabilia and is the perfect spot for an anime fan! They had a good amount of seating, staff were helpful and accommodating as well. We ended up getting the grilled eel over rice, spicy wontons & crab/pork soup dumplings. Everything was great and I have no complaints. I'll most definitely be back!

We found this place for lunch and thought it was so fun it being decorated with abingdon wallpaper and nostalgic collection of anime toys and figurines. It was quiet late Sunday afternoon so the place was quiet with two other tables of customers. In total the is about 6-7 tables and 3-4 counter space with stools. The waiter was very frowns and quickly took our order. The menu was Asian fusion focusing on Japanese, Chinese & Taiwanese dishes. We decided to order the tonkasu Ramen, udon soup with sliced beef & onions & braised beef noodle soup. The service was quickly and good arrived in less than 10 minutes. + overall food were tasty - All the dishes were just missing 1-2 things that pushes to the mark of 5 stars with the word factor. Ramen could use 1/2 soy egg; braised beef noodle needed picked cabbage & more cilantro; curry that came with the roti just needed a bit more spice for the punch you expect from curry. + The prices were fair. If I'm in the area may stop by aydin but it's not a place I will go out of the way for.

One of my favorite anime that I watched growing up was Dragon Ball Z. I ended up buying the first few seasons of Dragon Ball Z, up to the Freiza saga on VHS! Looking for places to eat in the Financial District for dinner, I saw Goku Kitchen just a few blocks away from my office! I just had to go and eat dinner at Goku Kitchen on a Tuesday evening! I would have gone the first night I arrived in from Las Vegas on Monday, but it was closed. As soon as you walk inside Goku Kitchen, you'll see all of the Dragon Ball Z anime figurines, wall papers from the Manga, and even a large size Goku! The menu is so cool too! The menu and food offerings are all inspired by Dragon Ball Z. Even the dish that the food is served on is themed from the Manga! The service was outstanding at Goku Kitchen. I had ate a large lunch so I only had room for some of their pork gyoza. Goku Kitchen has a wide range of dishes from Ramen, Scallion pancakes, pot stickers, soup dumplings and so much more! While I was waiting for the Pork Gyoza, I was admiring all of the Dragon Ball Z decorations and figurines! There was even a cool Vegeta display with the scanner on his face! After about 10 minutes, the Gyoza was completed. The food was delicious! The Gyoza came with a side of soy sauce. It was perfectly pan fried too! There was plenty of pork inside the Gyoza! I enjoyed the meal and the prices are relatively inexpensive at this restaurant! If you're a fan of Dragon Ball Z, you have to come to this restaurant! It's awesome!!

Goku Kitchen is a nice choice when you're looking for some Asian dishes downtown in the Financial District. This place is unique in that it is a Dragon ball themed restaurant with lots of interesting figurines from the game. It was my first time having their food, and I was pleasantly surprised that it was so good. I ordered the unagi (eel) don and loved it. I have a passion for unagi after having lived in Japan for a few years, so I know a good don, and this was definitely a good one. I look forward to returning and trying other dishes, as I'm sure they must be good. The place is very clean (spotless), and the people working there are very friendly and engaging. The food is great and the prices are right. What more can you ask for? Recommended!

This restaurant is fun and has good food Great service too. Eric was great. Definitely get the sparkling waters. Exceptional. I loved my melon flavor and passionfruit. Pan fried dumplings delicious. Spicy. Chicken and mushrooms dumplings were yummy. Add the hot chili oil for a light dumplings with fresh flavors and a pop of spice with the oil. The curry chicken and rice was epic. The curry was delicious. Not heavy. I ate it all. Braised beef noodles nice broth. End with the black golden dumplings. The sweet egg running out perfect. Buy a surprise gift set while supplies last. I won't tell what mine had in but it was like a kids meal. Fun.

Stepping in immediately and the whole place is decked out in manga panels and figurines. The attention to detail was not missed. There were little Goku and Gohan keychains attached to the menu, even when we got our bill there were little magnet characters. Happily surprised by the food as well! I got the gyudon bowl and left full. The staff were really kind and attentive. It's not a huge space but there's a good amount of seating and tables. It's really an immersive experience for any DBZ fan and you should definitely make the visit!

Ordered lunch here on a weekday at 11:30, through their website. Got the vegetarian ramen, crab and pork soup dumplings and the Shanghai green in broth. All were so good. Especially the soup dumplings. I love that they weren't too doughy as some places tend to make them. So glad I found this place.

You can order a little and keep adding depending on how big or small each dish is. We came right at 5 pm when they opened. Their location is a little hidden, it's on the second floor above Soba Noodle Azuma on 55th Street between 7th and 8th Avenues, closer to 8th. You have to go up a stairwell on the side. Getting to the food, their focus is on meat, seafood and vegetable skewers though they also have a variety of appetizers, rice bowls and noodles, and dessert. The meats and veggies are grilled over charcoal while basted with "tare", a house-made sauce that adds a level of umami to the caramelized grill flavors. Recently I got a handful of skewers for takeout, including: - Ebi (shrimp) $8 x 2: the shrimp were cooked just right, tender and juicy, yum! - Hotate Eringi (scallop and oyster mushrooms) $8 x 2: the textures of the oyster mushrooms and scallop pieces complemented each other, and were kinda similar. Another tasty offering. - Negi pon (pork belly with scallions) $7: I'm not a huge fan of pork belly in general, though they grilled it well here and chopped scallions added a little spicy tickle. While not the cheapest for skewers that you can find, (and inflation hasn't helped,) their flavors are authentic and their quality and consistency is key here. I'm glad it's still here since there seems to be fewer and fewer good yakitori spots in Manhattan these days. They used to have another location in the city though I believe this closed pre-pandemic, however from their website they now have another location in Boston. This was also the sister restaurant to Ramen Totto which had four locations at one point though all have shuttered as well. Hope this location stays around for a long time!
