We stayed at the Hotel Konzerthaus, and several times during our stay in Vienna we walked past this little subterranean hole without knowing anything about it. My partner and I both prefer to eat at small, neighborhood restaurants whenever possible and this looked like it might be fun so, on our last night in Vienna, we tried it out. I wish we'd gone sooner.
Although it's not much to look at on the outside, walking inside is like visiting a place you've gone all your life. We arrived at 8:00 pm on a Monday evening and were seated immediately. (They serve until 11pm or midnight, which can be a huge bonus in a city like Vienna.) The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with friendly people all around you, subdued lighting and candles on each table. The menu might be a little intimidating to those who don't speak German, but there is an English menu at the back of the book which spells out about half of the dishes for you on a single page. The other eight pages of the menu were drink listings, so don't let the heft of the menu intimidate you.
Being German illiterate, I let our waitress suggest a dish. She said that the Pike fillet was excellent, and I went with her suggestion. Several other tripadvisor members recommended the mushroom-potato soup so I had that as an appetizer, with a bottle of Grieskirchner Dunkel beer to drink.
My companion ordered the fried turkey strip salad to start, and was kind enough to give me a sampling of it. The meat was hot and crispy, perfectly fried and absent any greasy aftertaste. The greens were crisp and lively, and the tomatoes full of flavor. I had not expected to like the use of tartar sauce as a dressing agent, but I found it to be surprisingly appropriate!
From the first spoonful of my soup, I never wanted it to end. It was a well-balanced, creamy exercise in everything a soup should be. It had complexity, it had heft, and it was totally satisfying. Creamy broth was fortified by a good amount of small chunked potatoes and small, whole mushrooms. There was a subtle, acidic tang to the soup that I think might have been lemon, and at one point I would swear that I crunched down on a fennel seed. Whatever was in there was magic. By the time I finished it, I could have pushed away from the table and been completely happy. But then, the main course appeared and I retracted that thought.
The pike fillet was served on a bed of creamy mushroom risotto, on top of a generous smear of flavorful pesto. Surrounding it were fresh florets of broccoli and cauliflower, sugar snap peas and carrots which had been perfectly steamed. The fish might have been a *tiny* bit on the dry side, but I'm not going to count that against the dish because the flavor was excellent. The risotto was creamy and smooth, (and perhaps a bit gummy, but since even the best prepared risotto begins to get sticky after about 30 minutes, that's something I have come to expect when eating it in a restaurant) and had a good number of those delicious small mushrooms in it. Several times during the meal, I found myself making embarrassing little grunty noises while I was eating, the surest sign possible that I'm very happy, indeed!
My partner's main course was the goulash. It was bold and had strong notes of pepper in the sauce, the meat was tender and well trimmed, and the potatoes that accompanied it were tender and buttery. Several times during the meal, I couldn't resist the urge to reach over and help myself to another forkful of that delicious gravy.
It may be a long, long time before I am able to return to Vienna, so I wasn't looking closely at the cost of each individual item we ordered. When the final bill arrived, I was pleased to find that dinner for the two of us came to 47 euro plus change. We spent that much the night before on a substandard meal at a far more well-known Viennese restaurant! In my mind, this meal was an absolute BARGAIN!
All in all, it was a wonderful, wonderful meal. In contrast to what some few others have said on here, the waitstaff were very pleasant and easy to deal with, and were gracious when receiving our rave reviews of the food. In searching through my electronic translator, I learned a new word last night to complement the food to the staff - Erstaunlich! - Amazing! read more
