Mocha Coconut and Pistachio Creme Chillers
David F.

Gloria Jean's Coffees is smack in the middle of San Rafael's Northgate Mall. We stopped by on a recent Sunday morning while in the neighborhood. I was curious: I had never heard of Gloria Jean's Coffees, but the handsome store seems professionally designed from the outside logo to the store interior. I always like seeing if a new coffee shop has something different, something not available at places I usually frequent. That was definitely the case here: Coconut? Pistachio? We were all in! Their iced-blended drinks are called "chillers". I had the Mocha Coconut Chiller while my wife had the Pistachio Creme Chiller. Both were excellent -- as good or better than Starbucks or Peet's. The Coconut was especially tasty and a nice mix with the mocha. But looking them up on the web, there's more to the story of Gloria Jean's. It's an international coffee business, based in Australia as another reviewer mentioned. This San Rafael location is the only Northern California Gloria Jean's; in fact, other than one in Modesto and Burbank, that's it for California. They have a scattering of stores across the US, about 50. But they are in dozens of other countries. Browsing their website I see China, Egypt, Korea, New Zealand, Philippines, Vietnam and several dozen more. This unassuming Northgate Mall is the sole Northern California portal to a global collection of coffee shops.

Iced vanilla caramel latte

Iced vanilla caramel is always my go to! With whipped cream and a caramel drizzle. So yummy. Very sweet, so if you are looking for something to wake you up with a lot of caffeine I would definitely choose something else. Service was excellent, the lady making drinks knows my order before I even open my mouth! Memorable place and the only one in NorCal!

Pepto bismol chiller, aka a "white chocolate cookie chiller." At least it tasted decent.
Liza C.

This used to be my go-to place, back in the days of Mervyn's. I lived off coffee chillers. Today, I went in and asked if they could make a white chocolate cherry chiller, something they used to have on the menu. The lady said sure, no problem. I figured it would resemble the other cookie chillers on the menu, with a hint of cherry flavor. Wrong. I got a pepto bismol looking drink, liquidy and not at all like what a cookie chiller should look like. There was another prepared drink on the counter, it looked like a proper cookie chiller. As I grabbed my drink, she didn't even offer me a straw, even though there was one in front of her. She told me to go to the counter on the side for a straw. As I walked away, I heard her say, "this isn't Starbucks.... Looks like pepto bismol." YOU MADE MY DRINK WRONG, that's why it looks so wrong! They just solidified losing my business. Worst customer service ever. I'll drive all the way to Java detour instead, even with a line down the street.

A good cup of coffee

Good cup of coffee. Nicely cleaned tables for a quick Christmas shopping break. Nice service.

Triple nonfat coconut latte
Marshawna C.

I usually hit this place up whenever I come to this mall. They have a lot of different flavors to choose from. I usually go for the coconut flavor since I can't get that at Starbucks. I believe the owner is always at the shop, which is a good thing(means he making sure the drinks are made correctly). In a nutshell If your at the mall and in need of a tasty drink, make a stop.

Madagascar coffee, delicious!!!

The service there was just amazing. They did everything I asked on for the drink to the letter and I did ask for a lot.

Love it! Their shakes are very tasty! Missed it so much since I moved out of Marin. Wish there was one near my new home!

Is this place closed?? I went there during their hours around 12:00 and it looks like no one is there. Tried calling them. Such a bummer since I drove far away to come here.

There's street parking, but we parked across the street in the lot by the music shop (it's closed on weekends, which makes it even easier). Zero stress before carbs -- we love to see it. It has that super local, neighborhood energy where everyone clearly knows exactly what they're ordering before they even walk in. Always a good sign. The bread basket? Unreal. The soup was divine -- comforting, flavorful, and exactly what you want on a cozy day. And the bread somehow manages to feel indulgent and wholesome at the same time. Warm, hearty, and clearly made with care. The space itself is just as inviting -- warm, relaxed, and effortlessly charming. And the pastries... they looked dangerous in the best way. I didn't even get one this time, which honestly just means I'm definitely coming back for round two. Already planning my next visit.

My "Soft Scramble" was a pile of astonishment. It was so unrefined that it was an insult the the ingredients. There was nothing soft about the eggs, they were overcooked. The only thing soft on the plate was the watery run-off from the vegetables they heaped into the eggs: Too many chewy mushrooms and HUGE. Too many cherry tomatoes. I had to dig to find the eggs. The leeks were strips of inedible ribbon. The toast? I think it had been toasted yesterday and left on the top of their oven overnight and then reused today. I had to get up from the table and ask for butter to make it edible and still I worried whether I was going to break a crown. The pickled vegetables? Again, HUGE, hard and barely pickled. I will refrain from criticizing the service because they are all unaware of the nightmare in which they are working. Bless their hearts. I was so sad and annoyed. People think they can buy a restaurant with recipes and wholesale accounts and staff and just run it, "business as usual" but they are wrong. I went in and asked if they had sold the restaurant and was told, "yes." I imagine some tech-bro's wife or some hedgefund community doodler wanted a pet project with zero idea about food or food quality or how to treat and retain employees because what happened to MHBB is astonishing. It's rude and insulting to anyone who opened this restaurant and put in their best to keep the name and claim to be catering to the same people. But then again, this is par for the course or, from my vantage point, everything wrong with what's happened in Marin in a nutshell. Faux authenticity. Zero care. This is now all about the money. I will never bother with it again.

I initially tried to place an online order through their website but they weren't taking online orders at the time so I ended up walking in to order. Located in between several industrial companies, it can be easy to miss if you're not looking. Plenty of street parking along the front or just across the street. The shop is segemented into 3 connected sections; the main room where orders are taken, crafted, and served along with bags of coffee beans. The connected room had shirts, sweatshirts, and a fridge with grab n go items. The back room, had a few vintage pinball machines along with some tables and chairs. That'd be such a fun place to hang out at! Ordered a vanilla latte with almond milk and ice maple latte, also with almond milk. Both were wonderfully crafted and provided the morning jolt needed.

The SO is totally in love with the roast turkey and stuffing hash. Given the opportunity, I think he'd eat it every day. (He did have it both days this past weekend.) I was a bit disappointed in the buttermilk-cornmeal griddle cake that came with my Farmers Breakfast. The taste was fine but it was tough. Chewy is just not an adjective I ever want to apply to a pancake. However, they more than redeemed themselves with the BAT Scramble. I'll need to try a few more items on the menu, but that could easily be my "go to" breakfast. Portions were generous. I took my scone home since the scramble and potatoes were more than enough. The SO had great things to say about their chai. The space is bright and airy, and tables are not so close together as to feel like you're part of your neighbor's conversations. If there is any problem with this restaurant it is with the service. As far as we could tell, there was only one server working the entire space - both indoors and out. Although she was very personable and was doing a more than admirable job considering, it was just too much for one person. (Management, take note! She's great, but could do with some assistance.)
