While staying in Springfield, Illinois, where Abraham Lincoln built much of his life and career, I had dinner at The Globe Tavern & Restaurant, located inside the President Abraham Lincoln Springfield - a DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in downtown Springfield. On a Monday night, this isn't a tourist-heavy spot. The atmosphere felt very much like a working dinner environment, with nearby tables engaged in animated and colorful conversations about what sounded like upcoming Illinois legislative meetings. It gave the whole experience a unique, real-time connection to the state capital just steps away. After a heavier meal earlier in the day, I decided to go lighter and ordered the crabcake bites from the small plates section and made them my dinner. The menu is clearly set up to support that kind of choice, and pairing them with a fresh side salad turned out to be a great call. The salad was crisp, well-prepared, and a solid complement to the meal, with dressing served on the side. The crabcake bites themselves were excellent and worked well as a smaller, satisfying dinner when combined with the salad. This is a practical option if you're not looking for a full heavy entrée but still want something quality. Overall, this is a convenient and well-executed dining option right inside the hotel, especially for anyone staying nearby or doing business around the Illinois State Capitol. I ordered the soup to go while staying at the Doubletree (where the restaurant is located). It's supposed to be presented with a swirl of basil cream and topped with fried arugula. Instead, I got a plastic container (hello toxic emissions, that thing is NOT intended for hot food) with soup blopped in it that looked like it had been pulled out of the freezer. To add insult to injury, the cutlery packet included in the bag (fork, knife, napkin, salt, pepper... um... it's kind of missing something important for the consumption of SOUP... the pack had been opened and the spoon removed, then I guess they threw the opened pack back in with the rest of the packs. Lucky me). The soup was just under $10, so plus tax & tip it wound up close to $15. I had to drink it from the plastic container because I was not, after a 12 hour journey, trudging back downstairs to get myself a damn spoon. And I asked for a roll or a slice of bread... and got a couple of packets of stale crackers. Really, really unimpressed. read more

Didn't feel like driving tonight so I ate at the hotel. Food was good. Would recommend the tuna poke crisps for a shareable. It's a lot for one person as a meal but just personal opinion. Service was pretty good and luckily the million kids around the hotel weren't eating there :). read more

Had the fish and chips. Fish was way overcooked to the point of being rubbery. The chips were undercooked and literally dripping grease. There was a pool of grease under them and were still dripping grease when set before me. Absolutely disgusting! read more

Ya'll -- the food was amazing! Our expectations were exceeded. It was a quiet atmosphere. The artichoke hummus is so delicious, and the serving size abundant. My spouse ordered the turkey club sandwich that is served on ciabatta. He liked it alotta. As I am a BBQ-lover, I went with the Whiskey BBQ chicken sandwich, also on ciabatta. Yummy! The chicken is quality chicken. The BBQ was such a nice, sweet flavor. The potato fries that come with the sandwiches are also very tasty. Served up warm, like they were, they are a nice addition to the meal. Prices were reasonable. Environment/ambiance was pleasant. Khasai was our server. He went to great effort to ensure we had all that we needed. Thanks, Khasai, for caring about your customers! Highly recommend stopping by for drinks and make sure you order the hummus. My husband and I visited this location while staying at the double tree hotel. It is located inside. There were a few tvs on the walls but lacked any other decor. We did not order food but also weren't offered a menu so didn't realize food was available. The bartender was very inattentive and definitely not inviting. read more

I really hate giving bad reviews, but I take my Yelp very seriously so I have to call out a negative experience in hopes that it brings attention to the restaurant's attention. We were driving from St. Louis and wanted to try something other than chain food and see a little of Springfield. The Globe fit the bill, reviews looked okay. We did not realize it was in a hotel, but that was our mistake for not reading more carefully. As for the decor, it is kind of vanilla to me with a lot of televisions so it would be a great place to watch a game. Here is where it gets bad, we seated ourselves and waited and waited and waited for a server. We ended up going to the serving station to find menus​ to looks at. Our server finally did come, they were busy but not so busy that we should have waited 25 minutes to order. We ordered an appetizer and our entrees and waited....and waited and waited. Everything came out at the same time. The server apologized and said he would bring me a glass of wine at no charge. The food was okay, not good or bad just food. When we finally got the​ bill they had charged us for the glass of wine and my husband had to go find the server to correct the bill, which took another 15 minutes. I hope that The Globe can see this as an opportunity to grow because it is in a good location if you find yourself in downtown Springfield. read more

Globe Tavern is located in the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Hotel. It is a beautifully decorated bar/restaurant with seven televisions. I will go by my standard criteria so it's easy for people to understand why I gave this place four stars. Atmosphere: Very quiet, ambience is perfect for a small bar restaurant located in a hotel. There are seven televisions located in the bar. The only problem is four are on one wall and three are on the other side of the tavern 25 feet on the other side of the bar. The restaurant/bar is shaped in a rectangular fashion so it is very difficult to watch any television from the bar itself. But, if you're sitting at a table having a bite to eat it is very easy. If you want you simply ask the bartender. At that time, it was Kathleen who was fantastic and she will simply change the channel for you. Beautiful decor, wonderful staff, wonderful music that is played, and all-around great bar/Restaurant, but very expensive. Food: I had a 12 ounce New York strip with a side of broccoli and a Michelob ultra light. It was fantastic. The steak had blue cheese melted on top of it. The broccoli was cooked to perfection. My mother had what seemed to me to be a BLT it was incredible in portions and she loved it. The Pinot Grigio wine she drank she said was fantastic. But, once again the food is extremely expensive. Service: Kathleen was fantastic. She was a great bartender. Was very informative about the local area and places we needed to go look at. Such as Lincoln's tomb, the Abraham Lincoln Museum and of course Abraham Lincoln's home. I would give Kathleen five stars. The only reason I gave this place four stars. It's because I could not give it four and a half stars. It is very steep in price on the food. The menu is very limited. Other than that I found this to be a fantastic little tavern to have a beer and watch a little sports to relax after a long day of walking around downtown Springfield, Illinois checking out all the wonderful sites of the area. First meal last week was good, second night the meal was almost as good. Sadly, the salmon was overlooked for my dinner companion, despite her explicit instructions. They redid it to her satisfaction. The house chips served with sandwiches were excellent. The waitress on Thurs night 9/26 was wonderful. The waitress the second night, Fri, was very pleasant and way too overworked as she was alone the whole time we were there. Fortunately we were not in a hurry. read more

I was neither impressed nor unimpressed with this bar. The bartender was friendly but not overly so. The menu was decent, but they were out of many things. For example, the dish I ordered was supposed to come with brussel sprouts, I was informed it would instead come with asparagus, and I ended up with green beans with no explanation as to why. They also ran out of to-go boxes while I was there. I found this to be very interested for a bar/restaurant in a hotel. I suppose the guests who wanted to take food to go back up to their rooms had to splurge for room service. Regarding the decor, it does have many TVs, as advertised on their website, but they are very small and on the far walls. It would be difficult to sit at the bar and see the score of any sporting event. On the plus side, the bar stools had nice comfy backs on them. I would say this is a good place to go if you're staying in the Abe Lincoln Hotel, the weather is bad, and you don't care what's on the TV. Otherwise, I would recommend guests venture out to bigger and better bars. read more

Staying in the hotel and we still get treated like garbage. They boast 7 screens to watch the game and yet they will not even turn on the volume, not one bit. The blonde haired bartender lied to us and said that she did not even know how to do it. When she finally came to our table she asked us if we wanted menus, left the menus and never even asked us if we wanted drinks. When we got up and left she did not even look at us. When we went to the front desk manager and explain what happened they ignored us and just directed us to another place to eat. I do not understand how this place has the ratings it has. Very disappointing to have driven down from Chicago to be treated like this. read more

My husband and I ate at The Globe one Friday night. He had the special of dill smoked salmon pasta and I had the grilled chicken pasta. Both were large servings and there was enough left for lunch the next day. The wait staff was friendly and the atmosphere was relaxed.
