A solid 5. After 10 days in Seaside, my wife and I made our way to North J to resume life. Decided to just cruise up the coast since no rush was required. Since we're in the middle of what we're in the middle of, dining options we're limited in the AM. Anyway, we got to Highlands, a place my wife had never been so I drove down towards marinas so she could see what's what. Drive past the Girl's Cafe and decided it was the perfect place to stop. Since you can't go inside your order is taken at the window and they'll bring it out. The folks here aren't just nice, they are NICE!!! We ordered an omelet (for Lola) and I ordered The Bomber! Pork roll (what I call Taylor ham), cheese, fried eggs and some of the best freakin' home fries I've ever had on a hard roll. Tough to beat a better breakfast combo. With my big cup of coffee, that was the ticket. My wife's spinach, tomato and cheddar omelet was awesome she said. Word of caution - cash only! Visited today in the middle of a bike ride for breakfast, our host was extremely accommodating and friendly. Offered us a safe place to park our bikes with incredible customer service. Everything was super affordable and great tasting. I experienced the best bacon grilled cheese of my life, and the bombers received high praise. A 10/10 experience and will definitely be returning. this place is such a tiny little cafe, but one of the best places Ive stopped to eat in a very long time. the food was delicious, service was incredibly fast and friendly, even during a rush. Great little local joint for breakfast. We found this place on Yelp and loved it. The pancakes are the largest I have had and delicious. All good is cooked to order. Cheddar cheese omelet is served with home fries and toast. Coffees is fresh and delicious and the staff is wonderful and friendly. You can sit at a table or the counter. They serve breakfast and lunch daily except Tuesday when they are closed. The place is located behind Driftwood Liquors and their is ample parking. read more

Who am I to give Girls Cafe anything less than 5 stars after these stellar reviews? (All well deserved, by the way.) Girls Cafe may be a 'locals' place, but no matter where you're from, you're a local to the friendly staff when you walk in the door. My boyfriend and I have been to the cafe (in its present and pre-Sandy incarnations) a number of times after birding excursions at Sandy Hook, and without fail, we've been welcomed warmly, brought into conversations, teased and joked with. The food is tasty and filling, and served quickly, with a smile -- perfect for us when we need to fill our bellies and get back out to the Hook for more outdoors fun -- but we've never felt rushed. We know that we can always count on the Girls for a good breakfast or lunch... and we're really glad they're a Highlands staple. read more

I eat here all the time. It's tucked away behind the Driftwood Bar & Liquors and it's a small room with a few tables and some counter seating. I strongly recommend everything here but the pancakes stand out as among the best I've ever had. There's always something new to look forward to on the specials board, which is nice since I've had the entire menu. The portions are large, the prices are very reasonable, and the service is terrific. The ladies are absolute delights and their presence + pancakes is the best hangover cure in Highlands. I go back with the owner of this place for maybe 40-45 years now. I can't go to the Jersey Shore without getting me a parrot sub. I know you look at that statement and think. The place is named Girl's Cafe and I called it the parrot. Well their old place was damaged in hurricane Sandy. They couldn't re-open so they went on. Cathy just couldn't stay away from the restaurant business. So she teamed up with her sister Vera and here they are. They make a really good breakfast but I'm here for a parrot sub. You know when you have a place that is special to you and they change names you just have to refer to them as the old places name. They will always be the parrot sub to me. They even remembered me from a couple of years ago. Cathy came over an asked how long I would be in town. Unfortunately I came in on our last day in the Highlands. But, I got my parrot and it was really good as I knew it would be. I got the italian sub and a rare roast beef both all the way. I will say that it was a bit before I could eat mine but it tasted as good as I always remember it to be. I will also say that this sub is the sub in which I compare every other sub that I will ever eat. The bread is just perfect made right down the road with the infamous NY water. The water is the secret believe me. I really can';t say enough about Cathy n Vera's place but I do hope that they stay here for as long as I keep returning. Ordered chicken salad w breakfast potatoes. Prior to ordering I asked if the chicken salad is made in house or purchased out and it gets brought in. The girl says, "they make it there ." They are the best! Kathy, Vera and "the crew" make Sunday Breakfast so special to us. They are so funny and personable and make you feel at home. The pumpkin pancakes are my favorite and always look forward to October to have them. We go there mostly every Sunday and sometimes during the week for lunch (which is great too).
