Garlic knots with cheese and pepperoni, meat lasagna, and the meat lovers calzone
    Garrett L.

Starting off I just wanted to say I was glad they were open on Easter. Walking in you definitely get the family restaurant vibe, and that was a great feeling. Looking at the menu you definitely have quite a bit of options as far as food goes. The waitress we had was very warm and gave amazing service. The price point may scare some people, but you definitely get your bargain for your buck. The food was delicious and served hot, and the service was just as great. Definitely going to make this a regular Italian go to. Thank you Giovannis. P.s I definitely recommend the garlic knots with cheese and pepperoni appetizer. Amazing

    Spicy chicken pasta

Good food, the pasta was great, Cesar salad was delicious and the dressing was amazing, fresh soda. Unfortunately they didn't have wine but that is okay. Quiet "hole in the wall" atmosphere but great food that came out fast and fresh.

    Our burnt steak.

She said it wouldn't be a problem and put our name on the waitlist. We headed in to sit at the bar and we were promptly greeted by 2 bartenders. As we waited for the others to arrive, we both got a drink. Within 10 minutes the others showed up and our table was ready. Cam, who was one of the bartenders, waited on us. She was phenomenal. Great service from beginning to end. Daisy set up a spot for us and everything was excellent. The restaurant and bar area were both clean and comfortable and all of us enjoyed our meals and drinks. Can't wait to come back and order the Chicken Scallopini again. It was delicious!!!!!

The pepperoni roll had a buttery garlic outside. That was amazing. The bread was cooked perfectly. I tried it and that was probably my favorite. I wish we would've ordered one to go for dinner. I ordered the shrimp scampi. It was very good. My only complaint was a scam. Was they put cold tomatoes in the center. There is one other restaurant as well as several businesses using this parking area so there is always traffic. Handicapped parking is limited with a couple spaces near their entrance and a couple more spaces further away from the door. You'll need to look for a ramp if needed as there is not one by their entrance, but that is not their fault. Walking in for lunch, there was a sign to seat yourself. The restaurant was slightly less than half full. Seating is a mix of tables and booths. There is a low wall on the left with tables on the other side which may be a bit more private or less busy. Most of the booth seats we passed need recovering and the general decor is older and could use a freshening. There is also a small bar in rear with about six stools. There is some background music noticeable but at a low volume which did not interfere with conversation. The temperature inside was rather cool and we left our coats on during our meal. Our waitress came by within a few seconds of us sitting down. She took our drink order and brought the drinks back within a minute. We asked for a few minutes to review the menu. After about ten minutes she returned, apologizing for getting distracted with bussing tables and taking other orders. It appears the restaurant was understaffed and our waitress was performing many tasks. We ordered two appetizers and two entrees. One appetizer dip came out piping hot in about ten minutes. The Buffalo Chicken dip was very good. There is distinct Buffalo flavor without significant spiciness. The majority of the included chicken was shredded as expected but there was one very large chicken piece in the middle. This needed a fork and knife to break apart to eat. The accompanying pita-type chips were warm, crispy on the outside and little puffy inside. The remaining appetizer was delivered about five minutes later, with the two entrees about five minutes after that. The Fall special Four Cheese Bruschetta dip was good. Three of the cheeses were well mixed and the mozzarella was layered on top in the middle of the bowl. Once this cooled a bit it was difficult to use the pita chips to dip any of the mozzarella so a fork was used. The fresh basil and roasted cherry tomatoes were nice garnishes. The Johnny's Special sub was fine but not really special. There was enough meat, lettuce, and tomato to feel it was a decent value but the flavor was overall bland. The onion, mayo, and Italian dressing were minimal to non-existent, at least as far as flavor was concerned. The bread was nicely toasted with a crispness without bordering on hard. The bottom of the sandwich did get soggy by the time the first half of the sandwich was eaten but it did not fall apart. The accompanying French fries were very good, crispy outside and tender inside. The Syracuse Stuffer Calzone was another decent value with adequate ingredients to make a complete meal. The steak was decently flavorful but there was also gristle (possibly grill scrapings) included which took away from the experience. The accompanying marinara dipping sauce was underwhelming. While the recipe ideas and flavors are interesting, the execution was lacking. The kitchen had an issue with the timing of sending out the different parts of the order although the entrees did arrive at the same time. Our server was obviously good at her job but was saddled with additional tasks beyond any reasonable expectation of being able to handle while still serving the customers. The overall potential of the menu does merit another visit.

The service from them, the speed at which the food was brought out was good, except for two dishes that were slow in coming. The interaction with the maître d was horrible! So - NEVER reserve a room well in advance at the Black Olive in Jonesborough TN . IF you do, make sure you add about 5 to ten extra people to your party (who may or may not actually be coming). That way, when you are seated in the reserved space, you actually have enough seating. WE reserved the space for 20 people well over a month ago, for five o'clock. We were later called and asked for an exact number. We told them we didn't know, but that maybe only 15 would show up, and we reserved for 20. So what did they do? They set three tables for us. Two pushed together and one alone. Where in reality, 12 people could fit. We had 18 people show up for my very special milestone birthday dinner. When we arrived, we were told they could not seat that many, that the rest of the room was reserved for another large party that would arrive in an hour. They allowed the overflow of our group to sit at two other tables in that room, while they were empty. BUT at 8 minutes to 6, we were told the other party had arrived, and those of our party that were sitting at the other table would have to leave! Thankfully, we had all finished eating, but had not had dessert which was supposed to be an entire carrot cake we ordered to be cut and served to all who wanted it within our party. The rest of the cake we were going to take home. Mind you, a whole carrot cake there costs $80.00! It was my birthday, and we weren't concerned about the price. When those of our party were told they would have to leave, the maitre d ' (a man with a man bun) started clearing all of their plates from the table. We were never asked if they wanted dessert! We kept reminding them about the cake. The waitress said she would cut it for us if we wanted. We did. She did not. There was never a cake brought to us. Thankfully, we were not charged for it either. Needless to say, we were told repeatedly before, during, and after our meal by this maître d that he had arranged seating for 15 people and that we had told him there would only be 15 - wrong. We told them 20. Plus, there is no way even 15 people could have fit into the seating he had arranged. Bottom report - we were not happy, but we will get over it. And for most of the 18 people who were there ---- we won't be back. It used to be my favorite restaurant in Jonesborough. I will no longer be there, nor recommend it. Our minister was part of our dinner party, and now he has a new sermon to work on.... Bad customer service and how not to let it escalate. We were never told any of the waitstaff's names. So I don't know who to tell you was a great waitress. On our way out to pay, the girls at the register were frustrated but friendly. When we got home, we realized that while we had paid for our almost $400.00 meal, we received receipts for two take-out orders. I hope those customers got their food for free, as when they arrived, there was no receipt for them.

You see it from the road but you can't turn directly into it. Unless you got a really cool off road Jeep, you "might" be able to make it up that steep hill. I've only been here twice actually. And I would come here more often if it wasn't for the fact that I've missed that turn 100 times. First off! Yes it's Italian food. Not real real Italian food, but they never said they were real Italian either so that's a BIG plus when an establishment doesn't try to be something they are not. Secondly, I think it's a really cool setup inside for a FASTFOOD joint. Hell its nicer and captures the Italian experience better than some REAL Italian places! Also their staff are really nice. No, you're not gonna find any Italian chefs back there. I looked. Lastly.... they are super quick, food is super cheap, and while it's not meant to blows your socks off, it's actually quite good!! And they also have a drive thru. How cool is THAT?? When you're carving some pasta, pizzas, sandwiches with a slight Italian flare to it, and want it quick (as opposed to boiling pasta at home, who actually enjoys that step?)... you can be in and out of here with your own Italian dinner in no time. I love them yes, but only for what they are. Italian fast food. Yep, they do that well enough!

Would I call it New York style ?...ehhhh...meh...probably not. I grew up in Central PA where all the pizza places were owned by NY/NJ transplants. The differences here are typical to what I've found in the South during my 37 years here. The dough doesn't quite have the gluten chew of NY pie and tends to be heavier. You don't get the airy bubbles on the crust end, etc The cheese is different as well and lacks the stretch of NY pie. The other differences are prep/convenience choices ...the Italian sausage here is ground and the onions and green peppers are diced. True NY pie uses sliced Italian sausage (looks just like the pepperoni) and jullienne cut veggies. These may seem like insignificant things but it matters. So...if you like the doughier Mellow Mushroom type pie this will satisfy you. If you're from the northeast and want something to make you feel like you're back home... then not so much. Get the single slice with pepperoni or just plain cheese if your want a foldable slice.
