Just before heading home we stopped by Gino's Pizza for a couple of slices for the road. The inside looked nice with exposed brick walls and white tablecloths on the tables. There was a gentleman behind the counter on the phone having a lengthy private conversation. He could have been Gino or maybe his son. Meanwhile I noticed there was another man who could've offered some assistance. My friend and I pointed to the slices of pizza we wanted. I selected the tomato pizza and my friend picked the eggplant. The man on the phone picked the pizza slices with his bare hand and popped them in the oven. What's even worse, this is a cash only establishment, of course he was the one to handle the cash barehanded, while the entire time on the phone. He did use gloves and parchment paper as he removed our slices from the oven. I was a bit turned off by the lack of sanitation and professionalism. I was a bit hesitant about eating this pizza, but I was hungry. This slice was thin and a generous size. It was filled with plenty of mozzarella and tomato slices. My friend's was equally tasty with eggplant and mozzarella. If it weren't for the observations made above, this would have easily been a five star review. read more

This place rocks. I've lived in nyc for almost 6 years and on 83/1 for 2. Not sure why it took me sooo long to try this gem of a place bc it's literally 300 feet away from me. Maybe it was my mind knowing that I would love it, and because it's so accessible I would go all the time I always get a small plain pie. I'll pop in and order at the door on my way back from walking my dog, go put him upstairs, then run back across the street to a ready and amazing pizza pie. I think it's like $16 or $17. I just kinda throw a 20 at them and run away so I can enjoy their amazing food asap. Since finally stopping by Gino's the first time back at the end of April, I think I've been like 4 or 5x, so like 1x a week. I write this as I eat a leftover slice from my small plain pie last night. If I'm in the mood for Italian in the east 80s, I always come to Gino's. I've been coming here for many years and I've never been disappointed. The food is so good and the prices are reasonable. Last night I ordered the chicken Milanese special which was $18 and came with a generous amount of breaded chicken over an arugula salad with avocado and tomato. After eating at 83 1/2 for a couple of years, we made it to dinner next door. The outdoor seating is very comfortable. Luis, our waiter, was charming. We were started off with warm, crusty bread. Pizza isn't available for dinner, but is potentially shareable as an appetizer. The house sauvignon Blanc is very solid. My wife ordered the chicken Francese and I ordered a special of swordfish, mussels, shrimp and asparagus in a white garlic sauce. It was very good. The portions were generous. The accompanying pasta was good- I really liked it with oil and garlic. We were too full for dessert. This restaurant is cash only and is very inexpensive. Dinner for two was $80. I worked as a server in the restaurant industry for years. I do not take publicly posting a negative review lightly. Such a review is warranted in this instance because of the extreme unprofessionalism of Gino's Pizzeria when I called to resolve two food quality issues. I ordered lasagna and penne a la vodka through Grub Hub. The penne a la vodka had so little sauce on it that at first I thought the restaurant had accidentally sent me plain pasta. The little bit of sauce I subsequently found was bland. Additionally, the container of lasagna had apparently been been smashed en route, and the lasagna arrived in the paper bag rather than its container (this second issue is admittedly Grub Hub's). Stuff happens. I assumed the low amount of sauce was a simple mistake in preparation. When I called, the Gino's Pizzeria representative was immediately hostile. He loudly and aggressively interrupted me mid-sentence during the very first sentence I uttered to explain the problem. I tried a second time, and the restaurant's representative loudly and aggressively interrupted me mid-sentence again. At this point, I told the Gino's Pizzeria representative that I thought it was unprofessional to interrupt and talk to customers in the manner he was doing with me. In response, he started cursing at me, so I hung up. Luckily, I was able to obtain a refund from Grub Hub. I would have preferred giving the restaurant a chance to correct their problem and provide me with the Italian American food I was craving, had paid for, and had waited nearly an hour for. But the unreasonableness and inappropriate behavior of Gino's Pizzeria prevented me from doing so. I ended up throwing away the food from Gino's Pizzeria and ordering from different restaurant. read more

If you want a pretty good, reasonably priced Italian meal in the UES come here. Don't expect any royal treatment as the owner and staff aren't very friendly. I'm not sure if they're just very unhappy people, or if they have ZERO personality and that makes them come off rude. I know I didn't just catch them on an off day either because they've acted this way every time I've been in. Also, its a little annoying that they're cash only...BUT at least they have the decency to post a sign on the door stating that fact. I've been to other places where you don't know it's cash only until the bill comes, and you're forced to go the the shady ATM at the bodega next door. I stopped in last week for a Chicken Parm sub to go...It took FOREVER and I was the only one there. I've ordered this before and it was great...this time it was ehhh...Chicken was fatty and just not that good. Pizza slices are okay, but if you order a fresh pie its much better. I've also had their salad and pasta before and it was great. Large portions, fresh ingredients, good price. Seems like eating at the restaurant (as long as you're okay with the unfriendly service) is the way to go for the best food. Gino's in a nutshell - Don't come here if you want friendly, fast service. All I can say is...WOW! My coworker grew up on the UES and recommended this hole-in-the-wall as her #1 favorite pizza! They are cash-only and in my experience, that's been an indicator of great pizza. The crust was perfect & it had a nice ratio of cheese to sauce (I generally like a heavier sauce ratio but this was pretty average and was still great). My fiancé & I got the 18" pizza and we could BARELY finish it. Let me just say that we can normally polish off an entire pizza easily so this is a big & filling 'za. I called ahead to order and the woman on the phone was LOVELY. I wasn't able to order online so I suggest just calling (you have to pay cash anyway so it's not a big deal). In all, we loved this pizza! It was extremely affordable ($19 for an 18" pizza) too, which is refreshing on Manhattan! We'll be returning! read more

Was expecting more from this spot but it really was a very lackluster experience. The seating area was in the road (which I totally get - pandemic means we gotta eat outside) but there were trucks and cars and loud motorcycles zooming past us a lot (not the restaurants fault - just didn't make for a great atmosphere.) The drink options are pretty limited. They only have wine and beer and as a person who drinks neither I was disappointed. We asked our waiter numerous times for a pizza menu because we knew we wanted a pie and he informed us that there was no pizza menu - they had the basics and we could order whatever we wanted. This was fine but I felt like fro an Italian restaurant you would think they would have some pre-laid out options for you ... We ended up opting for a plain pie. We also ordered the antipasto and the artichoke appetizer. The artichoke app was really disappointing and was mostly breadcrumbs that were soggy and mushy. I went to Gino's last night for dinner with my sister. We have been here a few times before and I always look forward to their food. Gino's is like classic italian-american comfort food. Italian-american food is comforting for me because i grew up in an italian-american household. Their marinara sauce is great (A very easy thing to mess up!!!) Their eggplant parmesan is DIVINE. The service is also great and everyone is very attentive. I'm really sorry to see they only have 3 stars on yelp. Their clientele is mostly older people from the UES, who definitely don't use yelp. Gino's has been a local neighborhood pizza place for many, many years, and while there are many other pizza places around, this is both convenient and good. I generally have a slice or two, and I have never had a bad piece of pie. The prices are cheap, service is always friendly, and you won't be disappointed if you come here for a slice. We dropped in here tonight to grab a bite after dropping off our rental car getting back from our AC weekend. It's a decent little spot. A mom and pop pizza joint serving the local UES area. Cash only but reasonable prices. Two sizes of pizza with a 12 inch and 16 inch. We ordered the 12 inch was was freaking huge! Half regular and half with pepperoni. Pretty tasty and the slices are big, with a thick doughy crust. Also had a vegetable salad to start that was filled with grilled eggplant, asparagus, beets, broccoli, mushrooms, zucchini and much more. Nice and fresh. No complaints as we were filled and satisfied after this meal. Friendly waiter too who helped us with our luggage on the way out as we hailed a cab. As part of crawling through the list of top slice joints in Manhattan according to Slice Harvester (http://www.sliceharvester.com/), I had to hit Gino's. Out of the hundreds of pizzerias this psycho visited, this is one of only 28 that he called a great slice. What's also great is that Gino's is an old school place that looks less like a pizzeria and more like a restaurant, especially from the outside, even though you can sit down and just grab a slice. The place was almost full when I went in on a cold winter night, which was also a good sign. Most of the guys behind the counter were Italian, and after a short wait they called me up to grab my slice. As an average street slice, Gino's is pretty stellar. Lots of gooey cheese with a little grease, the crust had the right textures, and they didn't skimp on the suace. I wish they had topped with a bit more restraint, that the dough had fermented a little more, and that they left in the oven for 30 more seconds. This isn't a destination slice by any means, but it is a great everyday slice that I would be happy to have in my neighborhood. Well above average and well worth it. read more

Excellent meal. Met a friend and we were both craving traditional Italian, none of that overpriced gastropub stuff that's been suffocating the city. Gino's, Gino's, Gino's where do I begin? maybe it was the mid-Thursday, post MET time slot on a beautiful 75 degree day. Maybe it was the freshly tossed huge pizza we ordered (to aid us on our drive to Montreal that night) which was INSANE. Maybe it was the red brick, the authentic pictures on the wall, the lack of overhead lighting and the feeling that if I was in the back, I might get whacked. Or perhaps it was the old guys chatting up everything from politics to religion to pop culture who almost made me choke on my slice when someone exclaimed very matter-of-factly... ..."you know, Jesus was a Paisan!" Class on a Pan Gino's is one of the classiest pizzerias you'll ever visit. Walking in startles you because you have pull on a latch handle to get in. And then when you're inside you have to close the door behind you, like a real human being with manners. There's wine bottles casual and ready in the dining room. Mostly wood and brick styling. Very pretty place and they're not showing off - like Martha Stewart. The slice is served on a pan, not a plate. It's pliant, a bit chewy and the crust is tasty with a little char.
