The pizza was fresh, delicious and everything a good Chicago-style pizza should be. The crust was thick, flaky, and buttery. The sauce was tangy and not too sweet, but well-seasoned. The mom and brother were in town, and whenever we have out-of-town guests, our thoughts tend to turn to pizza. Since Gino's tends to be a classic, here we went. Parking can be a minor pain, mostly due to the one-way streets, but there's a decent amount of it and a garage a few blocks away. (I know, listen to the suburbanite whine about parking...) The building itself is an old fire station, which is pretty cool. There's not a ton of atmosphere, but hey, you're there for the pizza. We got an x-large thin crust, toasted ravioli and a house salad to share (not the "2 or more" one, just a regular side salad). The ravioli was really good, a little different from the norm, not greasy with a nice light cheesy filling. They come five per order which is a slightly awkward size when you have four people... The salad was definitely big enough for two to share, and we could've probably thrown in a third, too. Nothing too exotic, romaine and iceberg, a few cherry tomatoes, olives, red onion; the house dressing is pretty tasty though a bit sweet. And the pizza? The kids spaghetti was swimming in butter, the kids mostocoli (sp?) with marinara sauce was taste less, and my Stromboli was so heavy and also quite tasteless. Very nice family owned and operated business! I come here a couple times a week and they never disappoint. Food is always hot and service is always friendly! Support local business especially this one! Good craft beer selection(mainly bottles) Pizza is very consistent and my personal favorite! Give the thin crust a shot too, they are known for their deep dish but the BBQ chicken pizza is my favorite thin in chicagoland! Dining here made me realize how much I miss the closed Naperville location and that's not saying much. I want to know though, what's the deal with crappy service at every Gino's location? It never fails. We came in on a Monday night. There were three of us waiting by the hostess stand. We waited about 10 minutes before anyone even acknowledged we were standing there. That probably wouldn't be a big deal but in that time about 3 servers passed by without even a "hello." I could have understood if the place was crazy packed but not the case. Only two other tables were occupied and they weren't big parties either. Once we were seated, the waitress was nice and friendly but mediocre on service. I asked (a couple of times) for a glass of water and never received it. Plus when the check was dropped off that was the last we saw her. I love Gino's pizza and it was pretty good here. The breadsticks were decent but nothing like the garlic drenched ones of the former Naperville location. Terrible and very disappointed. My wife and I came to try this place again after not having been here for a couple of years. The "Supreme" thin crust pizza was tasteless. It had very little tomato sauce on it, minimal sausage, minimal cheese, but it did have a very thick layer of small diced onions, the type you would put on a hot dog, on the top. The crust was actually soggy and on top of all that the pizza was barely warm. There were hardly any customers in the place also yet we had to get up and wander around the restaurant to find a waitress to get refills on our drinks. The wife and I took our little peanut in to celebrate the wife's birthday. We celebrate with a deep dish, bacon cheeseburger pizza. This, incidentally, is not the healthiest thing on the menu, but... we'll roll with it. Anyways, the pizza was as good as we remembered. Surprisingly not that greasy. Tastes like what you think a cheeseburger made into a pizza would taste like. I used to frequent Gino's East 4-5 times a year, because we had coupons for when I played football at Wheaton North. Anyways, Gino's East specializes in Deep Dish Pizza, but they also have thin crust pizza. Two words come to mind when describing Gino's East: Consistently Inconsistent. I'm a knife and fork Pizza guy, so I prefer the deep dish. Their Veggie deep dish is was really good; I've had it on two occasions and it has been excellent. I've also had the cheese, and it was okay. I'm not a fan of sausage, so I won't comment on that one. They make a good thin crust pizza too. I really like their pepperoni (which I usually don't like) and the cheese. Gino's East has decent sauce. Unfortunately, I've had bad experiences here, too. I once ordered a veggie thin, and it was awful. Maybe one of the worst pizzas I've ever had. Undercooked cheese and watery vegetables. This actually happened twice, albeit the other time it was a cheese pizza and not nearly as bad, but still undercooked. Cheese should be brown on thin crust!! As for the deep dish, I've never had a bad experience, but I actually don't prefer the cornmeal base. Gino's East is a nice place for groups. It's in the old firehouse in downtown Wheaton. Will I go again? Probably not, because I prefer Stuffed pizza. It's good for sitdown, but I wish their prices weren't as high and I wish they were more consistent! read more

I've been here twice and both times for take out (I did eat inside previously). On my initial visit, I decided to call and place a take out order. The people were nice and gave proper expectation on how long my pizza would take. It had been a while since I had been in downtown Wheaton. For those of you who are familiar, you know it's a series of 1 way streets. So while I know where to go (as far as location), it was a nightmare to park. You either get lucky and find a space on West Front Street (which the traffic flow runs east) or try and find the right alley to get to the rear (where the take out space is). Once I parked, I paid and left. The dining area is pretty cramped and if you order to go, you must go through the restaurant to the back (if you don't park in back). Now for the pizza. Two visits and one common problem. My pizza wasn't sliced at all. I can understand once but two visits in a row? That was not a good sign (unless they quit pre-slicing pizza). It wasn't bad at all but not as good as other locations. It did seem a bit salty sauce wise (I order sausage, mushroom, onion, green pepper, & olives). I expect to have a little salt but it seemed like it was a bit more so than normal. The crust was a softer than I would normally eat (on one visit). The topping were generous but did seem a bit under-sauced. Pastas aren't bad either. I would consider coming back for carry out but probably won't dine in. I can remember trying to leave from carry out (and parking up front). It was a real challenge to get out when the place gets busy. Not a bad pizza, but not one of my favorites either. We recently ate here for a family dinner and it was a great experience. Being a Sunday night it was really quiet (I didn't need to make the reservations that I did). Our waitress was really sweet and very attentive. Our party slowly showed up but our order came out perfect and the food was good! Only reason I docked a star was that I'm SO bummed to see that there is no writing on the walls allowed :( (big tradition for me when I was younger) and also I'm EXTREMELY claustrophobic and we were put in this booth that could have fit 16 people (8 on each side) and it was literally a cave. The lighting was terrible (dark yellow) and there was no circulation in this cove that they put us in, (I'll compare it to a very long NARROW closet) and I was fighting a panic attack the entire time. Great food...bad reservation accommodations. My wife called a week in advance to make a reservation for 12 people for my daughter's 5th birthday. The woman that took the reservation even took the time to clear it with her manager and they confirmed they could accommodate. We get there last night and they tell us that they are going to have to split us up. When asked how this happened, I was told by the manager that they had at least two other larger groups that made reservations before us. Fine, I get that, but why wasn't there full disclosure that this was a possibility when we made the reservation. The manager also never offered to "make it right" by offering any kind of free or discounted item. I finally had to flat out ask for it, and even then she made me feel like I was being an inconvenience to her. I also wouldn't have been too upset if all the kids in our group where a little older (1 adult table and 1 kids table), but when the average age is 2-3 yrs, it just doesn't work. Our waiter Zach was made aware of the situation and he was nothing but apologetic about the situation. He did a fantastic job waiting on us and tending to our needs (even with the fact that one person in our group has celiac disease). He really saved the day. Again, great food, but the failure in communicating the situation to us ahead of time really put a negative taste on our experience. read more

I am a lover of Gino's East, and was disappointed to find out they had closed in both Naperville and Orland Park, which are closesr to us. So we decided to make the trek out to Wheaton to eat here. Pizza = exactly as I remembered. Not as good as downtown, of course because they don't have the same ovens. But very yummy nonetheless. Totally worth the drive. Pasta = mushy and gross. My husband is not a pizza fan so he ordered a sausage & peppers pasta dish. The sausage was good, the peppers were raw and the pasta was so overcooked that we didn't need teeth to chew it. It literally turned into a paste as soon as we took a "bite". Yuck. Service = Not bad, not good. When the server was there he was nice but he didn't check back much. Our pizza came 8 minutes before the pasta so we were almost done by the time my husband started eating, which was amazing because the pizza took the standard 30 mins. We never got drink refills. When the server boxed up our pizza he dropped half of our leftovers on the floor. To be fair, he was honest enough to tell us the truth and take half off of the pizza price off of our bill. The gold standard, of course, in pizza is Papa Del's in Champaign Urbana. There is simply nothing better. Until you taste it, and I your fav, let's not argue. Just take my word and that of 100,000 other Illinis... And Gino's east is approx 85% of the way to Papa Del's, I would say. Which is a great compliment. So Ginos East deep dish pizza is a three star. However, the regular pizza is horrific. Dominos, Pizza Hut are better and less expensive. I ordered a regular supreme pizza from Ginos East in Wheaton and, it was so substandard. Little cheese, little sauce. crust overcooked. Dry, lifeless. As I told the employee I spoke with after receiving the pizza, I was not calling to get any free pies or the pizza remade. My family used to go to the St. Charles location once or twice a month for the family special on Monday or Wednesday nights. About 4-5 years ago, they seemed to change their recipe (cheaper cheese primarily - it had a plastic consistency, lacked flavor, and didn't stretch like it used to. The deep dish crust lost the corn-based flavor Gino's was known for, and the the pizza "just lost the Gino's taste we had grown to love over the years." Out of loyalty (or sentimentality), I thought I would give the lunch deep dish pizza special a try. OH WELL!! YOU CAN'T GO BACK. The taste reflected the cheaper ingredients (or a different supplier). I wish this "Chicago Legend" had left a good thing alone, but cost cutting has taken its toll. I, for one, will not be giving Gino's another chance. I wanted so much for things to be like they used to, but they are now a sterile (no graffiti) shell of their former selves. I feel for the people who work here. They try hard and seem to care, but the people can't overcome a product that can't hold its own any longer. For a Chicago Deep dish experience, head over to Lou Malnati's. We have loved Lou Malnati's but since moving to Wheaton - we wanted to try Gino's. We were greeted at the door, able to sit at a clean table outside and the waitstaff was very tentative ( a young gentleman - wish I would have gotten his name!) The spinach artichoke appetizer was very good - comes with warmed lightly toasted small slices of bread and the pizza was great (got the thin sausage and spinach). I just tried this Gino's East for the first time and it was so amazing! It seems to be a popular place in this area of Wheaton. The customer service here is exceptional, their staff is very attentive, friendly, nice, and decent. They are very accommodating and they all know how to talk to their customers properly the whole time. They also know how to treat and serve the customers so well. Very personable staff. They will even greet you once you enter the place and also guide you to the vacant spot for you to wait the serving of your food. This place of Gino's East is really worth the drive, they are so easy to find, and they are very near to other well-known places around the area. You can visit anytime you want. Very convenient location. This is fantastic Chicago style pizza! Everything at their place was great. They are really better than other well-known pizza places around the area. Outstanding service. Service, Service, Service. We have had nothing but the most attentive service at Gino's. Even last week when our order came out missing a favorite topping. (I blame the table of 20 screeching pre-teens that were leaving the table behind us when we were ordering) They sent it right back and made it right- and quick. We were impressed!! The pizza is good- I'm a bigger fan of D'Agostinos on Southport & Addison downtown. But for good sit-down pizza in Wheaton, this is the place. If you're looking for great Chicago deep dish pizza in Chicago's suburbs, you need to visit this place. Gino's East Wheaton location is true to the original Gino's East location in Chicago, Gino's East deep dish pizza is easily among Chicago's best deep dish pizzas. It's crust is very different than other Chicago deep dish crusts, it uses corn meal. It's a hearty pizza with a very fresh tasting sauce. I'm less impressed with their thin crust pizza, which is good, but for some reason doesn't also use corn meal. The service is good and servers are very friendly. The atmosphere is basic; this location is a converted firehouse. The section of the restaurant near the big doors is my family's favorite place to sit -- but beware, it can be drafty in the winter time. read more
