The prices here are crazy high, however the presentation of the food and the taste made up for it. Do not expect this to be like any other Haitian restaurant from queens where they over stuff the containers because you will be disappointed. The restaurant looked clean and well organized. You have to call in your order as it will take 20mins or longer for it to be ready.

After driving by here so many times with my husband, we finally came in for lunch and we are so happy we did. Everything about this place is perfect. From the food, the smells, and the love you can taste in the food. I ordered the conch and hubby had the oxtail. Both were fantastic! Flavors were amazing!!!! Everything was so fresh, flavorful and the portions are pretty big too. I am so looking forward to trying more of her food. This place is so special, and so are the people who work here. I'm so grateful to have this place so close by!

Here's the Scoop! Went to the beach to have a walk and worked up an appetite. My honey and I decided to look on the Yelp app to see what was in the area. Gingerbites was it. Very cute restaurant that can hold at least 20 people inside and about 20 outside . The owner took our orders and explained the menu. The menu was chock full of delicious sounding food. We went with the oxtails. Oh my goodness they came in a brown gravy with rice and beans flavored with coconut and 2 large tostones. Finger lickin' good. Seasoned to perfection and nice portions. I was definitely tapping a tune while I ate. Accompanied with an ice cold ginger veer that came in a pouch. So, so delicious. So happy we looked on the Yelp app under Black owned businesses to find this gem. I will definitely return. This was a Winner!!!!

The owner was initially not nice. I'm not sure why she's not automatically pleasant to her customers. She's automatically rude and abrasive. I truly don't get it. I'd be happy if customers came into my restaurant. My husband and I wanted to try some Caribbean food while visiting family in NY and this was a convenient spot as it was about 5 mins from the home we were visiting. As we stepped in, no one was at the counter to greet us for what felt like 8 mins, give or take. Finally a lady came out and was walking out to hand curb side orders. She came back in and finally acknowledged us and said just a moment. She was busy. My husband sat down and she said if we're not eating in he cannot have a seat bc she'll have to disinfect the area he was in. But the way she said it was with annoyance. She assumed we weren't going eat in. There's a better way to speak to customers. So we placed our order and got some drinks. Food was ok. It could've been good if it wasn't overly seasoned with sodium. The drinks were on point. Her customer service improved towards the end of our stay. She said she gave us larger portion than normal for the wait. I appreciate her acknowledgment but I wish this was our first interaction rather than the latter. Best wishes.

Whenever I visit my family in New York my son, grandson and I try to experience foods from other ethnic cultures. This time we visited Gingerbites and had a wonderful meal. Marie was very friendly and told us about all the foods on the menu. We had the Akra Croquette and Marinade for appetizers and they were different and really good. I ordered the G-Bites Festive Platter so I could sample a little of everything. There was so much food we were all able to taste everything. My son ordered the Oxtail Nan Sous and while it is not something I would have ever thought I would try I did and it was very tasty. My grandson had the Griot which he really liked. We wanted to try the Kibbeh but Marie said it would take too long to cook as they had just opened. My grandson started talking with Marie about hot peppers and before we left she went outside and picked a bunch of peppers from her garden to give him.

Gingerbites is a unique bistro/cafe that serves Haitian cuisine with distinct flavors and tastes. We were confronted with a few problems at soon as we sat down: for one, they were not serving salad because of health Department regulations. They didn't have water for the table, so we had to buy a bottle of water. After we ordered, we were told that the bathroom wasn't working. We stayed, though. We ordered a platter with different samples of their fare; while varied, every item was fried, which made everything taste the same. For his entree, my companion ordered Griot (fried pork) which came with rice and beans. While the portion was more than adequate, he didn't care for the dish as a whole. I ordered the Shrimp Djon Djon with linguine and diced vegetables. It was very tasty, and I was satisfied. Probably my favorite part of the meal was the Ginger Citronade, sort of a lemonade with a strong hint of ginger. It was refreshing and original. We probably will not be going back, at least not until some of those problems are corrected.

We are looking to live out east and decided to take the drive to see how the Haitian food was! Honestly, we have tons of Caribbean food in Queens/New Hyde Park area, but Akra was well worth the drive! We ordered the Jerk Chicken with Duriz Djon Djon- 10/10 recommend. The jerk chicken wasn't too spicy, it was juicy and flavorful. They also gave three big pieces! The rice was also well cooked and not too salty. We also ordered Griot with Bannan peze- it's a requirement if you're going to eat at any Haitian establishment. The woman dishing out food out said "this meat is a little dry. Sorry." We ordered it anyway and it turned out to be pretty good! The bannan was a little soggy, but really that's part of ordering takeout for certain food items. Lastly, we bought two bottles of their lemonade and it was delicious! A great balance of sweet and tangy! We would definitely come back!

However, my next two experiences were extremely frustrating. During my boyfriend's early-morning visit, he was initially told there was no food available--even though the restaurant had just opened. Only after insisting did they offer limited options. Most recently, I ordered through Uber Eats and spent about $70. The containers were small and arrived half-filled. When I called to address the issue, the manager explained that because they pay Uber Eats fees, they don't provide full portions for delivery orders. That is not something any customer wants to hear, nor was any solution (like a coupon or replacement) offered. The food at Akra Deli tastes great, but the lack of consistency, poor customer service, and reduced portions for online orders make it hard to recommend. If you do choose to order, I strongly suggest going in person, otherwise you will likely not receive the amount of food you paid for. Overpriced and poor customer service!

However, this is a hidden gem you should try. It appears to be a family owned restaurant. Decor is light and seating is sparse, so if you plan to bring a party of 4 or more I'd definitely suggest calling ahead to potentially make a reservation. We also came on an extremely hot day and sadly their A/C system wasn't working so it was on the warmer side. Not unbearable but a bit uncomfortable, so just keep that in mind if that's the case when you show up. What I will say when it comes to the experience and food is that it doesn't get more authentic than this. I asked for a recommendation and was told to order the griot, which was well seasoned and quite large portion size wise. The plate came with a rice of choice, two fried plantain, beans, pikliz and dipping sauce for the meat. Not bad for $20. I ordered to go because I had an event to go to, but can attest that they do a great job of plating their dishes when you dine in. If I'm ever in NYC again I wouldn't mind returning, dining in and hopefully trying something different like their Kalalou or legume which looks incredible.

Do not confuse this dish with Jamaican Callaloo, which is made from taro (dasheen) leaves and is often combined with salt fish. The owners make their own passionfruit and ginger juice. The ginger juice is potent. It is stronger than any ginger beer that I have ever tasted. I have to dilute it with some water. I am only giving this deli three stars because it is a new business that must iron out some kinks. For one, sometimes all the daily specials are not put out by noon.
