    Rice and beans

My parents and I were in Norwalk for the day and were looking for a light lunch. We were intrigued by the one Haitian restaurant in downtown Norwalk and thought we'd try it out. The staff were super accommodating, answering our questions and fulfilling our weird requests for a couple of vegetarian sides. They ended up offering us a large dish of rice, beans, fried plantains, and a green salad for $10. Halfway through the meal, they generously brought some extra plantains and a dish of bulgur wheat. The rice and beans were spiced nicely, mild and not too salty. The plantains were tasty and surprisingly light. This is mainly a takeout place, so the inside isn't really set up for dining in. But the staff were nice enough to let us grab a table and eat our lunch inside. Wish I could have tried a veggie entree but was happy with the food and service overall!

Brand new restaurant. Everything is take out. I came in for the first time to try some Haitian food. The cook and staff were in the kitchen filling orders. A customer noticed that my brother and I looked lost so she asked us if we wanted to order. The amazingly nice lady made some recommendations and told us about all of the wonderful dishes available. She was so nice. She treated us like family and brought the busy chef out to introduce to us. I think the chef's name was Flor. The food was great. I would come back just because the other customers were so friendly. The chef seemed a bit shy but had a nice smile and was very welcoming. I really felt I had been invited to my aunties kitchen for dinner. Such a lovely restaurant and great customers. Please support this place and give them your business. They are new to the business so please be patient. Come down and take some great Haitian food home to your house to enjoy with your loved ones. I'll be back for the beef patties and soup as recommended by the lovely auntie in purple. I forgot to ask her name, but she was a darling.

I ordered the stewed goat with plantain. The food was brilliant, staff was friendly, and everything felt authentic.

Phenomenal new Haitian restaurant in Norwalk. Try the griot. I will be a regular, wishing them much success.

The griot (pork) is seasoned nicely, well fried and still tender inside.

My husband happened to see a van with the logo for Akra Haitian Deli when we were driving in Queens…read moreand we saw they are located in Huntington area. We are looking to live out east and decided to take the drive to see how the Haitian food was! Honestly, we have tons of Caribbean food in Queens/New Hyde Park area, but Akra was well worth the drive! We ordered the Jerk Chicken with Duriz Djon Djon- 10/10 recommend. The jerk chicken wasn't too spicy, it was juicy and flavorful. They also gave three big pieces! The rice was also well cooked and not too salty. We also ordered Griot with Bannan peze- it's a requirement if you're going to eat at any Haitian establishment. The woman dishing out food out said "this meat is a little dry. Sorry." We ordered it anyway and it turned out to be pretty good! The bannan was a little soggy, but really that's part of ordering takeout for certain food items. Lastly, we bought two bottles of their lemonade and it was delicious! A great balance of sweet and tangy! We would definitely come back!

However, my next two experiences were extremely frustrating. During my boyfriend's early-morning visit, he was initially told there was no food available--even though the restaurant had just opened. Only after insisting did they offer limited options. Most recently, I ordered through Uber Eats and spent about $70. The containers were small and arrived half-filled. When I called to address the issue, the manager explained that because they pay Uber Eats fees, they don't provide full portions for delivery orders. That is not something any customer wants to hear, nor was any solution (like a coupon or replacement) offered. The food at Akra Deli tastes great, but the lack of consistency, poor customer service, and reduced portions for online orders make it hard to recommend. If you do choose to order, I strongly suggest going in person, otherwise you will likely not receive the amount of food you paid for. Overpriced and poor customer service!
