I think I waited long enough to make my second visit to see how things have changed since my first visit... on the first visit, I recall waiting 40 minutes to get my food.. and I just hoped after that visit, they would have worked out all the little details, but it seems they still have lot of room for improvement. On my second visit, I went with pork banh-mi... I placed an order over the phone at 2pm on a Sunday.... told them I'd be there around 2:20... I didn't get there until 2:30pm and waited five minutes to talk to someone since they were busy... not a big issue... they were busy and helping other customers... When they asked me how they could help, I told them that I was here for a pick-up... they looked and turned back to me and said, "Oh, we will make you a new one since it's been a while"... they cashed me out and I was thankful that they were making me fresh one.... HOWEVER, it turned out that they never made my banh-mi that I ordered over the phone... they started making it five minutes after taking my order... so I had to wait another 10 minutes to get my banh-mi.... So, I placed an order 30 minutes in advance... waited 5 minutes to talk with someone and then waited another 10 minutes to get my order..... I just hope this is not a norm.... just hoping that this was one of those off days on a Sunday.... I'm just hoping.... As for the banh-mi... I think beef is a lot better then the pork... I'm not sure... but looks the the bread size has decreased since they first opened?? It just looks smaller... not sure.... they also changed the pho bowls... now they are using washable bowls.... not sure when my next visit will be, but for now, I'm reducing my rating down to 2 and lets see how things go on my third visit.... read more

[Ambience] Not much of an ambiance. It is a cute tiny hole in the wall. There is only outside seating offered and it seemed like a lot of people take food to-go because of that reason. [Food] Even with my loss of appetite during the challenge, I could not continue eating the ph after a few slurps. The soup was gone literally after the photo was taken(the noodle & the paper bowl absorbed it). The noodles were very uncooked, which made it hard to slurp. The meat was already cooked, which is not really what the authentic pho is supposed to be. The meat is supposed to be cooked along with the heat of the soup. The broth was not even hot and just tasted like lukewarm sweet water. Also, no one knows what the piece of stale baguette is for. For Spring rolls, I liked their spicy peanut sauce. It was thick and rich. The rolls were OK. as they put only 2 tiny shrimps, which I thought did not fit the $4.50 price tag. Usually you would get more shrimps so you can taste the same flavor with every bite. Also, the ingredients they put in was not traditional. Daikon and eggs in the spring rolls is unheard of as ingredients in spring rolls. Also, I think they need to invest in packaging. They definitely need a bigger plastic soup container and mini plastic box for the spring rolls. The broth was leaking everywhere and was absorbed by the paper bowl and noodles. The spring rolls was stuck on the paper tray and parts of paper ripped off with the rolls.  There was also no addition of beansprouts which is an integral ingredient in pho as it  provides a contrast to the soft noodles by adding a nice crunch. [Price& Service] For the portion size, the pho at Ginger Deli is over priced. Pho is supposed to be a big portioned fulfilling comfort food while being affordable. However, their pho was tiny. For the taste, the ph is over priced. I could tell how Ginger Deli was being stingy with their ingredients, which made me to feel like I am not getting my moneys worth. Their mini sized Mexican coke was also sold at a markup and cost as much as a larger sized one ($2). Not much to talk about service. One person takes the order and brings out the food to be picked up. 1/5 I tried taking some good photos but really, it was extremely disappointing. I gave one star because this is about the best pho you can get in the Ann Arbor. If you never have had pho in your life, you might think this tastes OKAY. If not, I would give zero stars. Great place for a quick bite! The banh mis are also perfect for on the go! I really enjoyed the chicken banh mi I had and am excited to try their pho and rolls. tl;dr macaron ice cream sandwiches are disappointing - there's a reason people only post photos of them before biting in :( The vegetarian banh mi ($6) has a good balance of flavors, but there was too much bread compared to the filling, and the bread was pretty dry throughout (not just a super crispy crust, but just generally really dry). They sometimes run out of bread during the day and you have to wait for the next batch, which means that it's baked fresh every day! I've usually heard China Gate recommended over Ginger Deli for pho, but I haven't tried it here. The ice cream sandwiches are pretty disappointing. They come a variety of creative flavors - I got Michigan cherry. They're stored in a freezer outside, and a staff member will retrieve one for you and hand it to you in wax paper. I wasn't able to see inside the freezer since I was paying, but when the ice cream sandwich was taken out the surface was wet and shiny, and there was a blue mark on it (probably from coming into contact with the sweet corn blueberry one?) so they definitely aren't individually wrapped. They look really nice on the outside, but when I bit in both of the shells were completely hollow on top. This doesn't only detract from the experience visually, but it also makes the ice cream sandwich more difficult to eat, and pieces of the shells kept falling off. The macaron shells didn't seem to be cherry flavored (but this wasn't advertised either). The ice cream was also very stiff and hard, so the texture wasn't the best when combined with the hollow macarons that were much softer and shattered easily. The ice cream itself was not remarkable, but I liked the cherries mixed in. One nice thing is that the $5 price includes tax (the receipt read $4.72 pre-tax) but this isn't true for the banh mi which is slightly confusing. read more

After reading all the great reviews on Yelp I was excited to try this place out but was honestly genuinely disappointed. I'm not sure if it was just an off day for them but here are my thoughts of their Banh mi sandwiches: 1) Bread was dry and stale tasting 2) Beef is very dry without much flavor 3) Panchetta had an authentic taste and flavor to it but the taste was ruined by the dry bread I will give them a second try and will try out their pho next time cause I really want to like this place. Yessss, this place is LEGIT! After years of being tormented by the many Ann Arbor establishments mislabeling menu items as "banh mi" (veritable travesties, I'm telling you), I can finally sleep at night knowing that there is a restaurant in A2 that knows what it's doing in regards to banh mi. Been in Ann Arbor for nearly 7 years, and NO place has gotten the pickled veggies (do chua) or bread right... until now! Crispy/crunchy on the outside, chewy on the inside... I can't tell you how happy I was after the first bite. The Vietnamese iced coffee tastes just like my daddy made it while I was growing up. I think some people would find it too sweet, but this is how the Vietnamese tend to make it. ^^; I would recommend the Thai iced tea if you are looking for a beverage that is not too sweet--it's also really good here! The fresh summer roll (goi cuon) and peanut sauce were also tasty and refreshing. I thought it had just the right amount of shrimp & pork slices, and the mango was a surprisingly pleasant addition. I left happy and full without putting a dent in my wallet. LOVING Ginger Deli so far and can't wait to come back to try the pho (which I hear they make the RIGHT way, without MSG, making the broth from scratch using a recipe that takes hours & hours--which is how it should be made!). Hm the beef pho (noodle soup) is pretty weak sauce. Last time I came a few months ago, it was pretty good - broth was flavorful, there was a good amt of meat... They must've changed things up. Because boy is it a totally different soup now! Vietnamese noodles with no bean sprouts is uh... sacrilege?!? When I asked for cilantro, she gave me 3 pieces of it and walked away before I could ask her for a few more. Never have I had pho with such meager greens. It was a sad, sad day. I didn't want to disturb her again because I already had to ask for the sriracha/spicy sauce and she did not have time for things like customer service. The beef pho is bare bones (with no bone broth though, unfortunately) with just noodles and Very Thinly sliced beef that was shimmery pink and green - ew gross, is that even edible for human consumption?! If you go bare bones on a noodle soup, the broth has to be good. Like flavorful and meaty. This tasted like it was made from an instant soup pack (think instant ramen noodles) and most likely was. Even when my brother made pho at home using a spice soup pack, he boiled it with meat and bones and the spices came together beautifully with the beef broth! No such luck here. I heard they fix it somehow for winter months. They have pretty good pho, little more on the deeper beef broth side for those who like that style. They give fresh veggies and all with homemade hoisin and sriracha sauce which were very delicious! They also have chicken pho available. They have something very similar to shave ice, try that its is done the right way. Trust me this isn't sno cones, they are awful and this is delicious. Ginger Deli is the most unassuming hole in the wall but it's wonderful! I went on a hot summer lunchtime and there was an (affiliated) ice cream macaron/popsicle cart right outside! ICE CREAM MACARONS PEOPLE! From what I know there is no other place in Ann Arbor that does ice cream macarons--these babies were big (slightly larger than a TeaHaus macaron if that help) and came in savvy flavors like cherry vanilla (which I got) and Samoa cookie. Highly recommend!! From the deli, I ordered a summer special, a ginger pork belly bahn mi. It was fairly hefty and tasted good, although the meat was quite a bit saltier than I prefer. Overall Ginger Deli is great! There aren't many Vietnamese places around Ann Arbor and this is a solid one. read more

Food - Bahn Mi sandwiches are made on decent tasting chewy bread, however the bread is consistent throughout and not like the ones I had been used to back in Seattle. I was hoping the bread had a crunchy shell with chewy insides. It was rather thin as well. The filling was meager and didn't overflow even with the sauce and thin bun. Pho is hard to mess up but don't expect to get a plate of bean sprout/basil leaves like you would at a normal sit down. Ambiance - This place is literally a hole in the wall type restaurant. The door slides open to a sort of three seasons enclosure and you give your order through a window. One sriracha and one hoisin sauce bottle are available to sauce up your order. Great place to visit during the summer when they have outdoor seating. I would warn against eating here in the winter though, since it's not a real building. Even with a space heater, it's freezing inside the plastic tent-like walls they put up. This is the only place on campus I've found with Vietnamese Spring Rolls, and I absolutely love them. So - this is literally a hole in the wall off a side street with some outdoor seating. You walk up to the window and there are no more than 5 menu options (Summer Rolls, Banh Mis, and Pho). There is also some shave ice- but that is for next time! I opted for a Pancetta Bahn Mi and a homemade soy milk. The homemade soy milk is average, but I really liked the Pancetta Bahn Mi. Just make sure you don't compare this to an authentic Banh Mi, the bread could be toasted more but the flavors were there with less daikons than usual. Ann Arbor has a lack of good pho. It's a fact. Or at least it was until I tried Ginger Deli. If you want the best, most flavorful pho in town, Ginger Deli has got you covered. If you're eating there, there aren't that many seats, maybe 10 or so, but the workers are very friendly and helpful! They address you by your name and are fairly quick with getting orders ready.I was with a friend the first time I went there, and we got the beef pho, an order of summer rolls, and a beef bahn mi. While the portion size of the pho is a smaller than that from the noodle bar across the street, it's beefy flavor is so good it doesn't need any hoisin or sriracha, and comes in an adorable takeout package! It's very comforting to eat when it's cold outside! The summer rolls are very good and the bahn mi is super authentic. Side note: One time when I was there, my friend and I each received a cup of Thai tea for free; the man who took our order was very nice! TL;DR? I'm obsessed with Ginger Deli. I live around the corner so my wallet isn't too pleased about my obsession. Vegetarian banh mi has so many different flavor in it, it's great. The garlic aioli is really good. The pho is also great - both beef and vegetarian. I like that the broth isn't overpowering. The noodles are cooked just right and they give you a lot of noodles too. It comes in a really cute take-out box too! I've also gotten the vegetarian summer roll. The spicy peanut sauce is delicious. They stuff the rolls with a good amount of vegetables. This is certainly the BEST Vietnamese cuisine in Ann Arbor! My friend introduced this place to me and telling me the sandwiches aka "banh mi" and the pho noodle soup are REALLY GOOD. Finally we have a place that offers pho in Ann Arbor! Pho is $8/bowl and the portions are quite small. I guess it is more expensive than usual because of the location and rent is more expensive? A bowl probably won't fill you up if you are hungry, but you can always order an appetizer on the side. The flavor is good and the noodles have a good texture to them. I think my favorite is the thai iced tea here - more flavorful and seems more authentic than all other restaurants in AA. It is a a great option for takeout as well because they have their customized containers that you can carry easily (soup and noodles in their separate containers). As several other people have mentioned, one of the downside to this place is the seating. There is limited seating inside and they have a couple tables for outdoor seating. I am not sure if they will install fans or AC for the inside because during the summer it can definitely get very stuffy/hot - especially eating a bowl of pho! The hours are very limited as well - only 11-5pm M-Saturday. So it seems like this would only be an option for lunch or an very early dinner. I got the beef vermicelli special and the fresh spring rolls with plum sauce. This was my first time coming here and my second Vietnamese "restaurant " experience. I love the outdoor seating and the service was very friendly. There is not public wifi, but that wasn't a big deal. The vermicelli was decent. But not extraordinary, it definitely was improved with some experimenting on my part with adding various sauces to it. The spring rolls were amazing and totally refreshing. This is the first time I've ever had pho and it was absolutely delicious! I am now craving it! Having finally tried it, I now understand why it has such a cult-like discipleship. The broth! That magical broth! I don't know how to describe the beautiful balance of sweet and savory in a beef broth, but boy will I be seeking out more opportunities to have pho in the future. My one note for the Ginger Deli is that the unique utensils they provide to eat the pho were incredibly awkward and the noodles kept sliding off. I would've actually preferred to use chop sticks. I feel like I should qualify this review by starting by saying with I'm Vietnamese American and am from California so I've had my share of great banh mi. This is just a review for the pancetta banh mi. By far the most authentic I've had in Ann Arbor (with the exception of Belly Deli which is now sadly closed). They actually use pate and the nice butter spread. Super tasty! Good bread - not a hard baguette like some other places. I will be back to give my verdict on the pho another time. read more

A MUST try in Ann Arbor! The menu is simple and short but every dish on there is worth trying. We got a smorgasbord of dishes our first time including: Vietnamese Sandwich with Pancetta, Beef Pho, and Shrimp Spring Rolls. The first two were our favorite. The bread was nice mix of soft and crispy and had great veggie and pancetta filling. Only downside was splitting it with my husband because I could have ate it all! The spring roll and peanut sauce was ok. We make those at home so it's hard to compete against that ;) Can't wait to come back and try the ice cream. Looked wonderful but we couldn't bare it when we were sitting outside in the freezing cold eating our lunch. Next time... We will be back!!!! read more

Visited ole Ginger Deli today and was finally able to get the veggie pho after having gone there the past two times and unfortunately having it sold out. The little shack was relatively warm, and clean and the Pho was spot on. The broth was nice and light, the portion was sufficient and the tofu (Although not a huge fan of the fried) was cooked well. I do wish they would offer thai basil. The pho, although tasty, had a lot of green onion and cilantro, which I like but I could see how it may be a little overboard for some. Overall, I really enjoyed it, and will be returning in the future. read more

I've passed by Ginger Deli so many times and have always wanted to eat there, but have never had the chance until today. I ordered the beef pho, and it was pretty quick (probably because I was also the only person there). You sit "outside" under a covering, so that might be a deterrent if it's cold. They have heating dishes though, and I sat right next to one to make sure I was toasty warm. The pho itself was pretty average -- not the best, sadly. It was ~$8.50, had several slices of beef, and was pretty flavorful, but the broth was so oily! The noodles were pretty well-cooked though, so no complaints there. Used to love this little deli at its former location. Stopped by on a Wednesday about 12:30 for a couple bahn mi. Nice space and friendly man at counter. Paid and was handed 2 premade sandwiches , which was odd. We took them to the diag to picnic. My veggie bahn mi was different than I remembered. Besides not being fresh, it had different ingredients. The sandwich was also somewhat flavorless compared previous visits. The other,a pork bahn mi was also substandard. Maybe the ingredients were altered so the sandwich could survive storage? Let me tell you guys about Ginger Deli, okay. It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon, but I wouldn't know anything about that because I was scheduled to work from 2PM - 10PM in the health system. I was sad, in despair even, because it seems that on ALL the nice days I'm stuck inside. It was lunch time, a self-imposed time when I'm hungry, and I decided to go down stairs. The health system does these marvelous restaurant visits, so even if you don't get a chance to frequent the town, you can still enjoy it's quaint charm, usually with limited, but decent, options and honestly, it works for me. I'm gluten-free, so it can be hard to find stuff that won't feel like it's going to kill me and so the Vietnamese bahn mi sandwiches, something that people typically love, especially back home in NYC metro can never be mine, at least not in the near future. To my great delight, however, they had Beef or Veggie Pho and man, was I happy. The happiest. A pleasant face gave me my options, smiled as I made my choice and told me that the drinks in front of me were what I thought they were, Thai Ice Tea. I've had Pho before in Tree City, not this restaurant, but something comparable and was not impressed. Gluten free rice noodles and beef, pffffffft, I would have settled for anything. The taste, however, was far from any "settling." The soup was amazing, perfectly cooked and the cilantro and beef tasted so very fresh, like I named the plant from which it grew. A dark, red hot sauce to accompany, and it was also delicious. They turned a day, which I anticipated would be the worst, to the best. It was such a pleasant surprise. This is a great example of a small place doing just a few things exactly right, and being golden. Definitely going on the "usual rotation" for me at lunchtime, and my companion also agreed. Ginger Deli is not a deli, but is a small noodle bar. There's seating for five, exactly five people at a small counter. Limited seating is why I dinged them one star. You order at a window in the wall and the food comes back out thru the window. There's not much to choose from. Two kinds of pho, two kinds of spring rolls, three sandwiches. However, it's authentic Vietnamese food. None of that crazy fusion interpretive dance that the other folks have. This is where you want to go to get pho the way your Vietnamese grandmother cooked it. I went with a co-worker and he got the beef pho, and I got the veggie pho. We shared an order of the veggie spring rolls, and each of us got the Thai iced tea. I made a joke about both of us belonging to #teamsriracha to the lady behind the counter and she put a big dollop of sriracha on the dipping sauce for the rolls. woo! The pho was perfect. We got it to-go and it comes in a cool little carrier that has the broth, sauces, noodles and parts in separate containers. The broth is super beefy in flavor and the pancetta banh mi very good. Albeit the baguette was very hard, and I normally like a cup of garlic fish sauce for dipping. I'm a big vietnamese fan, pho in particular so I like all the fixins (meatball, flank, rare beef, brisket, tendon, etc.) but I understand they keep it simple here. Update:This place used to be good...before it got all popular. I went back thinking I'd get the same delicious pho I had a long time ago... But it was disappointing. I got 3 pieces of meat, and the geasy soup base tasted weird. I miss the old ginger deli, wish they didn't start cutting corners :( read more

Sorry in advance for such a long post!! First off do not expect this place to be a sit down restaurant. There's a fancy closed canopy with a sliding door attached to the front of a house I believe. The canopies have a clear window all around it so you can still enjoy the sun or stay out of the rain. You go to the window, order, then pick a seat. They're all bar stool sitting so no tables or high tops for kids. Also due to the inclosed space there isn't a lot of room to put strollers and what not so if you have to bring the babies plan on getting to go or go in the morning on a weekend. I went first thing in the morning on a Saturday with the intention to cure my hang over. For me pho is the best thing and we heard Ginger Deli made great pho. They were running a bit late so we had to wait about 15 mins for our pho but that was okay because it was a beautiful day and we ordered fresh summer rolls to hold us over as we people watched for 15 mins. The girl at the cashier was very apologetic about the wait and for opening late; such a sweet girl. The summer rolls are amazing!! The pork and shrimp combo is a nice change from the usual just shrimp summer rolls. You get a choice of a few sauces, plum, peanut, or spicy peanut (I think). We opted for the peanut sauce since that's what we're familiar with that. Note: you can ask for it without shrimp or without pork, they make it to order. The beef broth pho was great! It was so flavorful, savory, and little to no sauce needed. Just the right amount of beef taste in the broth. The size is equivalent to a small or regular at a vietnamese restaurant. $8 is a bit pricey for this size pho but I don't really mind. If you like sriracha and hoisin sauce, ask for it (: The reason I give this place 4 stars and not 5 are for these reasons: 1. the description on the menu says there's bean sprouts and basil. Usually this comes on the side but ours did not come with it at all. 2. I asked for no cilantro but the owner decided to make it and put the cilantro in it then proceeded to explain that all the vegetables come pre mixed so he couldn't take it all out. At that point I would have preferred not to have any at all but he didn't care to ask before making it. He did offer to make it again if I wasn't happy with it but with a hangover at bay I was in no mood to wait any longer for food haha and I do not like sending food back unless I absolutely have to. 3. The meat was over cooked and dry as if it had been cooked previously then thrown in. The traditional way is to throw in raw meat right before serving it and let the burning hot soup cook it before you eat it. On that note the soup was not scalding hot which may be a good or bad thing depending on what you prefer. Lastly, I had no idea what to do with our bowls. There was a sign to put your trays in the trash can but no sign for bowls. It seems it would be cumbersome to clean up yourself if everyone left an unruly stack of bowls and trays in that area. But all in all I enjoyed this small delicious place. I will definitely be back to try their famous banh mi (Vietnamese sandwich)! read more

I just checked out Ginger Deli for the first time today and ordered the beef bahn mi--I was impressed to say the least. The meat was tender and flavorful, the bread was crisp yet soft, and the cucumber balanced nicely with the jalepenos. On one of the first nice days of the year, Ginger Deli truly hit the spot. Also worth mentioning: the whole in the wall atmosphere. On a warm weekday, this is ideal. It's quick, relatively inexpensive, and all the focus falls on the food. read more
