There is truly no better sandwich spot in Ann Arbor than Maize N Blue. I visit often from Colorado because my daughter lives here and I never miss a stop or two at this place. The gluten free bread is better than any I have ever had and the sandwiches are spectacular. The sandwiches make Zingerman's look like a Subway sandwich. This time, I tried the roast beef sandwich -- it was super tasty and flavorful. Personally, I love my sandwiches warmed, so if I had known it would be served cold, I would've asked for it to be heated. It also came with chips, which was a nice touch. You can tell this place is well-loved and popular , the service is fast compared to the crowd, and there's a lovely outdoor seating area that's perfect for nice weather. It's a 3. Not untasty. Not what I'd call a delight though. I could get this corned beef at a grocery store deli. Real deli corned beef is messy. It's unctuous. It's not this flat thin slice uniform bullshit. It has texture. It can crumble. This ain't that. It made me sad. It did not taste fresh made in store sliced to order deli food. The pumpernickel bread was good. The slaw was rustic and choppy and worked. The melty cheese was nice.The pickle was nice and sour. The curly fries were OK. I can't get past the corned beef. Back again and got the Maize and Blue Awning this time at the recommendation of a friend who raved about the Honeycup mustard used in the sandwich. Hafta agree and say both the mustard and the entire sandwich was pretty darn tasty. Mind you nothing fancy, but half a sandwich was a hearty meal for me (though perhaps just right for a college student). Crisp toasted bread, a fair amount of sandwich fixins plus a dill pickle for $14. As usual service was friendly and pretty quick, I've never waited more than 10 minutes for the sandwich to be ready, either for take away or dine-in. Being graduation weekend in May, we just beat the rush on Saturday around 12 noon when we got there bc right afterwards we saw plenty of grads in caps and gowns come by and a steady line of about 5-6 small groups formed. Great food but I will never go back here after the service my friends and I received. We ordered on snackpass ahead of time to make sure we wouldn't have to wait too long. When we got there, the deli was pretty empty except for a couple people. On three different occasions, my friends and I walked up to the counter to ask if our food was ready, as it indicated on the app that it was. It also had been about 35-40 minutes in a fairly empty restaurant so we were hoping it would be done. The girl who worked at the front laughed the first time I asked, saying she'd let me know when it was ready. Finally, after the long waiting period, the girl said one of our friends names. Turns out, everyone else's food had been ready (including mine) for about 15 minutes just sitting there. This girl didn't apologize and FURTHERMORE got my order wrong. It had corned beef and pastrami, Swiss & jarlsberg cheese, Russian dressing and sauerkraut and a sourdough rye. All delicious ingredients creating this very delicious sandwich. I wouldn't mind coming here again. The only thing that was a let down was their price. $12 for a sandwich from a deli is just way overpriced. I totally agree with Liz W. its good, huge but just not special. Still overpriced in my opinion. $9 for a sandwhich with no sides is too much no matter how much meat is on there. Also from what the men said, the quality wasn't all that. The man had the triple treat, good, not great. The boy had the ham I am, and if a 8 year old boy can eat it and still be hungry I think the $9 are not really worth it. I had the greek salad, it was fine, again not special. The highlight we all agreed was the swiss they had, the bread was also pretty good.
