Menu online says $11.95, yet woman working there charged me $21.00 for that hero sandwich and a 20 ounce soda. Shame on me for not asking the price before ordering, but an even bigger shame on them for having the audacity to charge what they did. They've lost a customer for life. Food is always very good tasting, limited selection available upon walk in depending on what or who's cooking I guess. Prices vary and can get crazy at times, as I ordered two egg sandwiches and a half of Stromboli this weekend and I paid $42 . Now it was some good Stromboli and very tasty egg sandwiches but yikes!!! So. Much. Yes. Walking into any mastic deli can be quite... questionable. In fact, we walked into two before stopping here before the beach and immediately had to walk out. While Giacolones was a bit dated and had a couple prehistoric flies buzzing about, we were quickly greeted upon walking in. The women told us about a few things and the meatballs that were just freshly made. After pondering for a while I just wanted pastrami, and spicy... so I asked her to make me pastrami on a hero with Swiss, Russian, coleslaw, and cherry peppers; my friend got a basic salad with chicken over the top. Add a big water and an big iced tea, it came to about $27-$28 Before I talk about the food, I was a little upset I spent this much on a sandwich and side salad, that's sorta absurd to be honest. Then again, the drinks and tax add up quick, three bux less and I wouldn't even think to mention the price. Moving on, the salad was super fresh, lettuce and cucumbers were crisp, grilled chicken was somehow divinely tender, red onion was fresh, and they gave a nice huge side of blue cheese which was needed for dressing junkies like us. The hero... whoa, I kno it's just a hero and sliced pastrami, but somehow this pastrami was just out of this world tasty, I'm sure it's just your normal awesome board head sliced and tacked onto a sandwich but this sandwich wasn't normal or ordinary in flavor, it was extraordinary. Wish I could comment on the food but as I walked through the unlocked door at 4:40pm I saw a man sitting at one of the tables then a grey-haired woman (I'm grey myself so that's not a dig) stuck her head out of the back and said they were closed. It was Thursday and I'd checked online before heading that way from visiting a relative nearby. Their hours were posted as 8am to 7pm so that uh...sucked. A shame too because after learning of the place from my cousin I was prepared to spend a decent amount of cash to bring some things back to the City and my wife for a Friday night get together with two other couples. A family owned and operated business. "Giacalone's Deli" is a butcher and deli nestled in the heart of Shirley for a long time. Surprisingly I never noticed this place. I was actually driving by today and saw it off to the side. I was doing a lot of running around, so I decided to get some breakfast. Inside, you can feel the love they give there family made meats. I liked that butcher feel and Italian vibe inside. They all talked as they worked and seemed very comfortable with each other. I walked up to the counter and asked for a wrap. I decided last second to change it to an Omelette and forget to ask for a side of sausage. No problem, right? I will just ask for one. I couldn't. They talked so much they didn't hear me asking. Finally it was to late, my omelette was ready. I asked if they take debit and the gentleman told me yes. That was a relief, because I had no cash as usual. What I wasn't told was that they charge .35 cent and it's called a customer service charge. No matter, I was hungry and I didn't want to complain. I ate the omelette and it wasn't to my liking. It lacked cheese and the meat and peppers were not heated up. It was almost thrown together. The free orange juice was nice, but not enough to make it special. I will be back, the meats look amazing, but I won't be getting breakfast anymore. The staff working there is family and I admire there unity. But when it comes to breakfast, they need to come together and work out a better way to make it. read more

I always make a stop at this Deli whenever I am in the neighborhood. I am never disappointed. I consistently purchase the Fresh Mozzarella, Rice Balls and the Stromboli (meat or eggplant). "All you calabraise-a do the mambo like a crazy" Besides the fact that I grew up with the Giacalone family (only from going there with my mom as a wee one need I mind you) this place is truly an institution in the Mastic - Mastic Beach - Shirley area. The family has created a sincere "hands-on" experience in this establishment since its induction into the town. Without getting too personal I shall continue my review. Favourite dishes: Homemade mozzarella (of course!), Homemade sausage, and homemade rice balls (which now they have conveniently created "mini" rice balls, Danger Will Robinson.) The ground meat (ground round) is perfect for a nice clean, burger (no chuck or grizzly bits) Obviously you can't miss the awesome selection of italian cheeses and dried sausages. Great place to stop before cruising down to the beach. Truly an Italian (er...half italian) boys dream come true. read more

I live in Westchester and visit my sister who lives in Shirley. I spend a few days when I go to visit her and on one visit went to Giacolones and ordered a decaf coffee, very light, with half & half and two sugars. I have never had to repeat the order again; when I come in they (all of them) know how to prepare my coffee. Whenever i go there they treat me like family, a big hello, a lot of joking, and they show a genuine interest in my life without prying. That's the human side of the place. The food is simply the best italian-American food this side of heaven. Everything is so fresh, I mean reeeeally fresh and made to order. No short cuts, no substitutes, no cutting corner. Just good old fashioned good food (I've had many dishes and sandwiches and have never been disappointed. If you have to wait a few minutes for your order, it's worth the wait as you listen to their banter and see the way that a loving family and Damien get along so well.
