This review is for the OUTSIDE of a house for rebuilding. I've been renting from the same large house for over 8 years. The entire place needed TLC, badly. Sprague did some of outside of the house that was large - it's a 3300sqft house, they fixed many parts including the south side of the house (sun facing) In multiple places on the south side, there were multiple bowing wood and 50+ loose screws, it looked like a tornado hit it. They took apart the entire wall within ONE day and had it built back up the next day, WOW!!! I rent, so I know my slumlord didn't ask for "better"- The South side of the house they just finished, looks so beautiful and it looks better than the rest of the of the house and I cannot even pinpoint WHY (besides it being new) but that's besides the facts - It's that good! They did a GREAT job and I hope they get a raise!! They are very nice and fast! Thank you! read more

I recently hired them to re-side my 24 year old Colonial, choosing a higher quality insulated siding , white trim, new front door unit, and job was done on time and extremely well. After that experience, I invited them back to then re-deck our back deck, and just like the first experience, we are 100% pleased. Terrible experience. Costs came in significantly above quote. And my downspouts still leak. I requested them to fix these and they refused saying "that's downspouts, not gutters" and "oh, you're a gutter expert now." I pointed out that their crew was there and could have told me they leak but apparently that's not their problem. I now have to hire someone else to finish the job because they wont come back. They also left tons of sharp nails around the full perimeter of my house that my kids almost stepped on and my car almost had a punctured tire. read more

We were looking for information on work that was done on our condo prior to our purchase. We were repeatedly told there was no record, despite their receptionist mentioning that photos existed. Once I found proof of the work with a processed check from our bank, they were able to locate their old invoice. I contacted G.F. Sprague for gutter installation. They set up a meeting, and the rep did not show. When I contacted the company, the rep only wanted to talk via text message. He thought that was the only way to do business. Ok, except he did not tell me he wasn't going to be at a meeting for which I set aside time. That was a lack of respect. He kept giving excuses to not meet at the property. Then, he would provide quotes that were inaccurate, costly to me, and would have left me with work that was a detriment to my property. I engaged G.F. Sprague for several days to get them to actually visit my property to see my needs. They, to be fair this rep, wouldn't. Based on that information, I did not go with them. No one else from the company reached out to me despite several emails and two phone calls. I spent several days giving them a fair shake. I have to say, waste your own time at your own risk. I cannot recommend this company to anyone. I wished hit had been better, but I have to be honest, the small unnamed company struggling to make it did install my gutters. tly bought a house in Wellesley MA and was told by the realtor that part of the roof had been done by GF Sprague 2 years prior and that the company had a guarantee that their work transferred even should you sell the house. Upon the inspection we saw some mold and thought, "well we will just call them and ask them to take a look". This is when the nightmare began. GF Sprague sent someone over, they said they had done the roof and would redo it since the workman ship was clearly lacking. There was no ridge vent, the soffits were covered up by insulation, and my favorite, they put a "vent" on the outside but didn't drill a whole and connect it to the outside. The employee said they would cut the ridge vent and drill a hole for the bathroom vent which had unfortunately lead to a pretty serious mold infestation over 2 years. I cant understand why a company would put a vent on the roof but then not cut a whole and connect it to the bathroom fan. They then put a pipe up to make it look as though there was some connection but it led nowhere. Weeks went by and I didn't hear from them. After several calls they sent their "Forman" out. He said, there was no way to tell if anything had been done to the roof after they had left. Which I found really strange, clearly someone else didn't do the roof again and not put in any ventilation. Eager to get out of there I asked okay so youre not going to stand by your warrantee? The forman deflected and said to redo all the mistakes in the roof they agreed they had done 2 years ago that it would cost 10,000. They left, never came back never heard a thing from them after that. I recently had my roof and gutters done and the total was significantly less than what GF Sprague said, even though they failed to provide me with an estimate in writing. I received an actual guarantee and am very happy with the service. Do NOT contact GF Sprague for any work on your house and DO NOT trust any garentee or warrentee they try to sell you on their website. Truly a horrible experience. read more

Cannot comment on their work. We had called just to get an estimate on a roof repair after the recent storms , and were told if we planned on putting an insurance claim it would be $1295 up front for them to adjust the claim. No mention of what would happen to that money if the insurance company denied a claim. We've always handled insurance claims ourselves and have a public adjuster we use when necessary. All we wanted was a simple estimate. We were so put off by the person we spoke with that we said forget about it and are contacting other roofing companies for estimates. read more

When I finally called and spoke to a live person, they claimed that they had sent me a quote. Clearly, they are too busy and don't want new jobs. I feel badly for anyone that actually hires them. I called for an estimate for a new roof. They scheduled the appointment and expected to come into my house w/o letting me know this would be necessary during COVID. Two other estimates did not expect or require this. Then, they told me they would not give me an estimate unless i convened all the "decisionmakers" for the roof estimate for a one hour meeting after which they would give me an estimate. I told them that i'd prefer to have an estimate and then follow-up if I had questions and they refused. I literally had to throw the two guys out of my house. Don't say you are offering a free estimate if, in fact, it's only a free estimate if you can convene an entire Board of Trustees to sit and listen to a one hour presentation. That is not "free." Very unprofessional. Also, I see I"m not the only person who has given a similar review to them. Disgraceful. read more

Don't waste your time, they play mind games! My dad recently reached out to get a quote for a new roof, since ours is aging. During the initial visit, my dad told the sales guy that he had two daughters, and suddenly the sales pitch changed to "we want to get the whole family involved!" Neither my sister nor I have any ownership in the house, and my sister doesn't even live in the same state. When my dad expressed his lack of interest in getting the family involved, since he's the sole homeowner and still the primary decision maker, they cancelled the next appointment to go over the proposal, and have now either forgotten the timing on the reschedule of that, or are playing games since they have asked my dad to reach out and "schedule a good time" when as far as he was concerned, it was already booked and confirmed! Also, their bid has come in 1.5 times higher than one of their competitors for the same work, and didn't even address the skylight on the house or the bathroom vent that only recently became a small issue, both of which the competition addressed without even being asked about either. read more

I wish I could give these guys zero stars. They are complete crooks and should be avoided at all costs. Here's our story: I am a trustee at a beautiful condo complex in Newton MA where we have a slate roof with copper valleys and gutters. We knew we had some leak issues and that work was needed on this old converted schoolhouse. Mark came out and took a look at the roof from the ground and said they'd need a lift to really analyze what was going on. He presented a proposal to us for over $9,000 that we believed was largely going to go toward repairs, but included an inspection as the first step. The deposit amount was $4,200 which we paid to them. We also signed a contract which said approx $5,000 would go toward repairs. They came out with a large lift and proceeded to damage our front lawn and walkway with it, which they then had to repair. The inspection crew of a few guys spent maybe 2 hours tops on our roof photographing issues. Then they left the lift there in our parking lot for several days and did no repairs, not even an agreed upon clean-out of a dryer vent, saying they would address that when they started the work. What happened next was unbelievable. We received no report for well over a week. The expensive-to-rent lift sat idly by until they hauled it away. Mark supposedly had Covid so we heard nothing until we received 32 photos with *no explanation* as to what any of them meant and a half-page proposal for almost $230,000.00 (more than our annual operating budget) to replace every bit of copper and some other items. The "proposal" basically dismissed our roof as needing everything and included a Google earth image of our roof with roughly scribbled lines where all the copper areas were noted as needing complete replacement. We told them that this seemed like an exorbitant amount and that we'd need to get other bids. It was at that moment that I realized we were out $4,200 for a joke of an inspection that should have been FREE. We had essentially paid for them to do a sales pitch. The efficiency we had hoped for by having a lift there to begin some repairs immediately vanished as quickly as their crew. When we asked why they couldn't have used a drone to accomplish the same task, we were told they needed to get in close to look at details. BUT HERE'S THE BIGGEST GOTCHA: Several other companies have now come out with drones and/or ladders and have provided detailed images with explanations, reports and proposals FOR FREE. No expensive lift, no weird contract with zero deliverables (yes, we were stupid to agree to this), no high pressure dissing of the entire structure. And guess what? Their proposals were far less than half of Sprague's with assessments that much of the roof is in "relatively good condition" with targeted repairs and restoration or replacement of selected copper areas. SO CAUTION TO ALL: Do not EVER agree to an inspection-based contract with these guys. You will be paying to have them give you a sales pitch. And expect that their proposal will be way higher than anyone else's, a thinly disguised way for them to redo lots of things that, in many cases, may not need to be replaced or that can be restored. read more

I needed a membrane roof to cover a newly-poured concrete roof on a 20' x 20' detached garage. It's a very straightforward job, as the detached building has no complicated edges where it abuts a house, for example. Two quotes came in a $4000. GF Sprague quoted $14000 for the same job! I chose Kostas roofing. Paul Kostas did an excellent job explaining all the details of the installation (which were the same as the GF Sprague quote) and did an excellent job. I requested a quote from them. When the guy came out to give a quote, he didn't have a ladder to get to the third floor, where the work needed to be done. When a follow up meeting was made for the work "proposal", the scheduler said both my spouse and I needed to be present for the consultation. This was their requirement even though I am the only home owner. The scheduler said "we are not the right company for you" and hung up. It is logical to have all the homeowners agree and consent to construction. However, requiring a non-homeowner spouse to be present during a consultation is nonsensical. read more

We have used GF Sprague for a couple of projects with varying results. The more recent was a new flat roof installation. They clearly did not pitch the roof correctly, the water pools and does not run off into the gutters they installed. At first they tried to say it's fine, then when I pushed, they said it's the build of my house and I should have asked for a pitched roof. Seriously, they expect the customer should tell the roofer how to do their job. This is just common sense and multiple other roofers have told me it was installed wrong! They will not admit it was done incorrectly because then they would have to pay to redo. While there is no water leaking right now, it's only a matter of time. Will never use again! PLEASE READ. RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN! I usually don't write reviews. This company must have bought all their positive Google reviews. They are not only very unprofessional but also a scam (I don't use this word lightly). As previous reviewers mentioned, GF Sprague forces you to review the "proposal" in person. I needed to have a leak in the roof of my very old home fixed, so I expected quite an investment. Their rep (I am sure this is not his preferred way of conducting business) presented me with a "good investment option" for $38k, a "better investment option" (they literally use these terms) for $70k as well as a "best investment option" for $77k. His illegible notes/proposal (that he only provided to me after I asked him four times, it felt that he would be punished if someone at HQ found out) had four words for option 1, six words for option 2 and eight words for "the best investment option". Even if he had been open to sharing the "proposal" with me, there would have been no way to even know what their repair plans were or to compare their "proposal" to other quotes. Their rep also asked me at least three times if I was the owner and decision maker, very disrespectful. After this painful experience, I proceeded to get quotes from two other companies: they both came in at around $20k and with plenty of detail. To summarize, the "proposal" from GF Sprague ended up being a three-tiered detailless highly overpriced attempt to extort a homeowner. Jerry Sprague, your business practices are outrageous. GF Sprague completed a huge and expensive roof job after a tree fall in 2021 and has been there ever since to support their excellent work, as copper gutters and downspouts were also damaged and needed to be replaced. In 2023 we noticed one downspout had become detached from the elbow just below the gutter, probably due to high winds after the fall gutter cleaning. Matt Delosa came right away to assess the situation and soon afterward sent one of his reps, Paul Elliot, to solve the problem. Paul climbed a 40 foot ladder during a windy day when freezing snow covered the ground, knocked the ice out of the base of the elbow, and reattached the downspout and elbow. We appreciate how responsive they were, especially as temperatures were about to plunge to single digits. read more

Many reasons I wouldn't use this company again to put on my roof, and not going into all of them here. The experience was and has been unpleasant, for all the reasons you are reading about. The roof doesn't leak but am having trouble with something and waiting for them to come out. Much quicker to come out for sales call than later problem. Most succinctly, they cost way more than everybody else but many others do a great job and are simple more genuine and more reasonably priced. It's not worth the extra money. I contracted for $12,000 with Sprague Roofing in the fall of 2010 for work to address ice dams that arose the previous winter at the rear of my house. The project was a total disaster and a complete waste of money as the ice dams and water damage the next winter were actually worse due to their poor design and improper installation. While I received a detailed quote, it immediately fell apart when their crew showed up to start work and started making project changes on-the-fly. Specifically: 1) The salesman - Mark V - assured me that there was adequate space to install soffit vents on the main part of the rear of my house but the project manager took one look and said that a product called Smart-Vent would be required. 2) The Smart Vent was installed in a manner that did not provide adequate cooling all the way to the eve, resulting in - you guessed it - ice dams. However, the problem was now compounded because when the water backed up, it spilled into the ventilation slot required by the Smart Vent installation. This meant that water was not seeping through shingles, but pouring straight into my attic through a hole they had cut into my roof. 3) They installed Smart Vent over a section of my house that has a cathedral ceiling (and therefore no attic). The Smart Vent works by allowing air to ventilate the attic through a hole cut into the roof. Only in this case, there was no attic so the cold outside air flowed into the rafter space between my ceiling and roof. Due to recessed lighting, this cold air immediately entered this room. I notified them problem of this before the project was complete and they removed the Smart Vent but refused to give me a credit for this section of the work. 4) Their Smart Vent installation protocol was to install the product several feet above the eve, resulting in a very noticeable and ugly line in the roof which was unacceptable in the front of the house. As a result, we agreed to eliminate the front half of the house from the project. However, when it came time to settle up, they offered less than a 15% discount to the contract price although they had not done any work to the front half of the house. Additional: Do not be take in by their high pressure sales tactics. My sales rep worked up a quote that seemed quite high. After I balked when presented with this quote, he immediately offered a $2,000 discount BUT ONLY IF I SIGNED THE CONTRACT THAT DAY. This SHOULD have been my first warning about their business tactics - shame on me. Epilogue - In the fall of 2011, I had another company remove and replace ALL of the work performed by Sprague. While I again used the Smart Vent product, this time the installation was done correctly and - although it has been a mild winter - I can tell that there will not be any future problems as all the ice and snow on the eves of my house immediately sloughs off. read more

I had been a previous customer with this company using them to remove ice dams, however this last time was completely unacceptable. I understand the longer than usual response time given the amount of snow that has fallen, however what is unacceptable is that once they did get back to a customer, they only promised to do a half assed job, rather than a complete job. Why not spend the extra time on a customer and charge them whatever cost you want to charge them to do a complete job, rather than what this company was doing, and doing only a preset amount of time and only do half of a job. The company will still continue to make the same amount of money, just sees fewer customers. Because of this stupid system of trying to see as many customers as possible and charging only a preset amount for a preset amount of money regardless of job completion, my roof was only partially completed, and of course, the side that was not completed still had an ice dam and started to leak, leaving for a very unsatisfied customer. I would have called them back, but I constantly received spam e-mails from them after the fact stating that they will no longer be accepting any more requests and basically, best of luck. My advice, find a company that will stand by their work for customers they get to. Everyone is overworked and there is a ton of snow, so if it takes a little bit longer to respond or make an appointment, people will understand. read more

I usually don't take the time to do this but I was so put off from my interactions with GF Sprague that sharing this might save others valuable time, Much of this is an echo of what others have written but here's my quick input - Don't use them. They use up way too much time in taking potential customers through a boring PowerPoint presentation, I asked for a roof repair estimate and they came back to me with a proposal that had removing my chimney, replacing a couple of widows, doing some pointing and of course, repairing the entire roof. After stripping out the services I didn't need, there quote ended up being 4 TIMES the amount of my other 3 quotes. I have a simple rubber roof that's 15' X 20' and have 3 other estimates between $9k (lowest) and $15k (highest). They presented me with a proposal for $45k!!! I showed their estimate to the company that I moved ahead with and they said they were charging "Brookline" pricing cause they thought they could get it. What's ironic is that one of their lousy PPT slides says they participate in "fair pricing"...yeah, right!! Just to make sure I wasn't loosing my mind, I quickly vetted my info on a couple of roofing calculators..all estimates were between $7k and $15k. There are plenty of other roofing companies out there. I had good luck with Bob from Recon Roofing. Hey Sprague. If you're reading this, here's some free business consulting at no charge: 1. Don't waste people's time making them sit through your lousy presentation. We already either know the info you're presenting by looking online or don't believe it (such as your testimonials and fair pricing participation) 2. Don't keep asking for both husband and wife to be present - people are busy these days...you're lucking enough to be in the door giving an estimate. This isn't the 1960s. 3. You're obviously setup for commercial pricing...so get out of the residential pricing market...you're embarrassing yourself. 4. Lastly, tell your estimators not to ask to use potential customer's bathrooms..it's weird and shows that they're not prepared. Hope this helps people out. read more

After spending 14k to have all of our gutters redone last year, I called GF Sprague because we had a tree come down on our house and damage the gutters the other day. Simply because I mentioned the word "insurance" I was told it was going to be $500 for them to come out and give me a quote. An existing customer, who had a tree come down during an already difficult time for people. You would think they would want the business. I told GF Sprague that I would be paying and they did not need to deal with insurance, I just needed a written quote to be reimbursed but no, still $500. If I had never mentioned insurance there would not be fee for a quote (which is normal for businesses - free estimates). I really could not believe my ears, particularly since we had already given this company business. I do not recommend a company who operates in this manner. The good the bad and the ugly - The flat roof above our screened in porch was leaking intermittently with heavy rain, the situation was complicated by the presence of a deck above The Good - Sprague was responsive and a Sales person quickly visited our home and said the only way to diagnose the issue was to disassemble the deck and inspect the roof to identify where the problem was - since this would required alot of labor the cost was $990 but would be credited to fixing the issue The Bad - the roofer came to house, removed a total of 3 boards and concluded that I needed a whole new roof - the sales person than visited us again to deliver the estimate for the work which was 13,000 which seem absurdly high. I pointed out that his people had not fully disassembled the deck as originally quoted and he agreed to settle for the $330 I had paid as a deposit The Ugly - I called three other roofers, all of which came out for free and said that they could not make a diagnosis with removing some clapboard to see if there were punctures or other breaches. I selected a roofer, who found that when the deck was built on top of the roof there were nail punctures in wall that could easily be fixed without fully disassembling the deck. The Happy Ending - The roof was repaired for $2000 and stood up with no leaks to the recent hurricane. While I can't comment on the quality of work from Sprague, I find their sales tactics and desire to overcharge highly objectionable and I would never recommend them. We hired G.F Sprague to install a new roof and gutter system to our home. We signed the contract freely based on recommendation without getting other quotes which we now regret. We would like to let other potential customers hear our experience before making a decision on using this company and suffering the "buyers regret" we are feeling now. Our roof tiles were coming off and our wooden gutters were rotting so we had G.F Sprague recommended by a neighbor. A salesperson came out and did a "full and thorough" review of our needs and a few days later we were shown a very professional presentation, including many closeup photos of our roof and gutter issues via a Zoom conference call. We were given three options and costs for our project and we decided to go with the full refurbishment of our roof and gutter. The Project Manager told us the work would take about two weeks and they started the project soon after. Within two days they had ripped off the wooden guttering. The facia board was part of the guttering (not picked up in their initial "detailed" estimate). We were told that to replace the facia boards would cost an additional 20% more than the original estimate and that they could not continue with the project until we signed the change order. This would have left us with a stripped down roof, no guttering and the side of the house open to the elements and wildlife. We felt we have no choice but to sign. We asked the Project Manager for a parts and labor breakdown of the additional cost which we never received. To this day we have had no cost breakdown of the original cost or 20% increase as a result of the change order. The project was completed in less than the two weeks so we are not sure how it cost an extra 20% for fascia boards. We did not notice that the contract said that changes could be charged on a "per job" basis, which seems disingenuous, but we did, foolishly, sign the contact. Two incidents happened on the project which we feel potential customers should know about. One of the contractors fell off a first floor roof, luckily onto grass and not a hard surface. He was working at about 12 feet from ground level with no safety harnesses. We witnessed the fall and checked in with the employee who did not want to talk about it. We reported this to the Project Manager who's response was "it's a dangerous job, that why we have insurance," showing no empathy for the contractor or for us having witnessed this. The Project Manager later said he had checked in with the employee and he was ok (he came back on the project) and the issue would be delt with internally. The second incident was also potentially very serious. While repairing the roof, the workers disconnected the dryer vent without letting us know that they had done so and telling us we should not use the dryer. Their reasoning was that it is normally only disconnected for a minute or two and we would not even notice. On this occasion, the worker somehow did not reconnect the vent hose and roofed over the vent itself without cutting a hole out for it.  We put on the dryer on that evening, causing the fire alarm to go off and the fire department to be called. The dryer had overheated due to no venting outlet, and the lint had caught fire. The third floor was full of smoke. The firefighters said we were extremely lucky that the house didn't catch fire. Luckily, there was not a lot of lint in the dryer or dryer hose and the fire put itself out in the dryer with no damage to the house. It was only when we got our dryer serviced a day or two later that we realized that it vented through the roof and asked the project manager if the incident could be as a result of something they had done, which he confirmed after talking to his team. We spoke to the project manager and production manager who were apologetic and, once again, they said they would deal with the incident internally, through training. By way of compensation for our distress, they offered us a meal out, which we felt was insulting and declined. We later asked them for a more substantial discount, which they immediately refused. They then became very insistent that their bills were paid on time, calling several times a day. When our final payment was one day late, because we were still hopeful they would be refunding us money after the fire incident, they instead gave us a $350 interest charge! To summarize: * It does not appear that the review of the job requirements was thorough if they missed such a major issue. * If we didn't sign the change order for an unsubstantiated $23k they would not complete the project and our house would be exposed, forcing our hand to sign. * 2 serious safety incidents happened which they said they would deal with "internally" * We believe you could get a comparable quality roof and gutter replacement for a lot less money and without a "surprise" and with much more professionalism and higher caliber customer service. read more
