The baklava was sweet as it should be. The sweet syrup soaking the bottom of the nut and Pistachio crust was really light and tasty. The phyllo was very flaky and tasty. I ate in the shop so I got to enjoy the real ceramic mug, saucer, plate and metal flatware. Very nice touches to reward you for staying in the shop. The jazz music was a nice volume and pleasant. The staff was very nice. The barista suggested the latte and the other staff delivered the latte and pastry to me where I was seated. Also, a nice touch. Overall, excellent experience!

I understood they were having power issues and were operating on a generator. Their tablet system appeared to be working, as I could see my order while placing it. I was making a large order for my coworkers and needed an itemized receipt. When I asked for one, I was told they couldn't provide it due to the power outage. I then asked if they could pull up my order on the tablet so I could take a photo of it, and I was told "yes, one second." However, after my order was ready and I followed up, the staff member seemed irritated and repeated that they couldn't provide a receipt because of the power issue. I clarified that I only needed to take a picture of the order on the screen, which I thought we had already agreed on. I also didn't realize that every add-on they offer comes with an extra charge. For example, when asked what kind of milk I wanted, it wasn't mentioned that 2% milk (which is typically the default) had an upcharge. Additionally, when a soft top was offered for an iced drink, it wasn't disclosed that it was a $1.50 extra charge. This was frustrating, as these add-ons were suggested by staff without clarifying the additional cost. While the issue was eventually resolved, I left feeling unhappy with the overall experience. I did return once afterward, but between the inconsistent beverages and the lack of transparency around pricing, I don't think I'll be coming back.

The drink is gray before the espresso is added, and pretty much stays that way. I got it iced, and it tasted quite good--not too sweet. Charcoal does not change the flavor. I often get a sour stomach from drinking coffee later in the morning, as I did here, but did not experience that this time. Charcoal isn't known as an acid reducer, most people that use it do it to remove toxins before they reach the kidneys but the benefits are not clear. in any case, it's something that's not on the Starbucks menu! Service was friendly and enthusiastic. They have a wide variety of coffees, including cold brew and chemex as well as espresso. They have teas as well. The owner prepares the drink in front of you, which would be particularly fun with Chemex. But in all my years as a Houstonian, I never made it out to their 2400 Karbach location... until now. I've been meeting up with a good friend weekly for coffee mostly on weekends, and we decided to try for a Friday morning so my Yelp search pulled up Katz. I had just read an article about Avi Katz (I'm a huge fan) in the Spring Branch magazine, so it was like it was meant to be! Now keep in mind they don't open until 9 am so it's not a good caffeine pick-me-up option for early risers nor those who need to get to the office before 9 am, but if you can make it during their business hours, it's certainly worth it. I'll walk you through the experience. I arrived to an empty parking lot at 8:45 am and sat in my car. Note: the lot isn't too big with limited spaces, but spots constantly open up after the morning rush) I started seeing other cars pull into the lot so I got out and hovered near the front door. By the time they opened (exactly at 9 am), the line was 10 people deep, but I was in front. I decided to go easy with a morning brew drip coffee so I wouldn't hold up the line behind me. And if you've read the reviews or you're familiar with how Katz's works - the coffee was free! That's my favorite f word. I sat down, enjoyed the nice ambiance (lots of seating and pleasant decor), chatted with my friend, and the rest is history. Staff are super nice and we chatted for a bit as well. I truly appreciate what Katz Coffee means to the local community, and I'll continue purchasing their high quality coffee beans to support the business, but also because I just really like their coffee. And if you read their story on their website, it's actually really inspiring how Katz Coffee really gives back to the community with non-profits and other worthy organizations. Astounding and mind-blowing, actually. Parking is a bit limited here, which is a bit similar to the parking nearby at Karbach Brewery, but the parking here IS better than Karbach Brewing, and just a heads up, the gate in the back does open to those exiting the lot, so don't feel pressured to have to park in the front area - you can park along the side with the Katz trucks which is along a one-way road. One downside is the place opens at 9am, which perhaps doesn't lend itself to the pre-work, get-the-day-started crowd. Then again, it's free coffee, so this is so so understandable because the crowd would likely build to unfathomable levels if the place opened at, say, 6am. Plus, come on - the baristas are doing their part making free coffee for the customers, so obviously there is some grace here. It feels like the get-the-day-started-at-9am crowd for free coffee does tend to arrive the minute the place opens, so a line does tend to build for the first bit but then kind of dips back down again after the initial rush - something to keep in mind when planning your visit. The vibe is fantastic. So many tables, easy place to camp out and work or meet up with people. Really earthy interior design. The service is also top notch. Keep in mind these people are giving us free coffee, which Katz certainly doesn't HAVE to do. The baristas today during my visit were SO friendly and SO welcoming. I started with a drip coffee, which came blazing hot and fresh. Didn't add any creamers or sugar, and it was great. Then, for variety purposes, I tried their pumpkin chai latte. Delicious again. And again... FREE. It really doesn't get any better than this for bang for the buck, while also supporting community causes in Houston. So for those visiting, it is encouraged to perhaps buy a bag of coffee beans, whether it be for yourself or as a gift for others. The beans are obviously of great quality, given the taste. My thought is all of us should do our part to help ensure Katz Coffee is able to sustain their generous (and tasty) ways as much as we possibly can.

What impressed me was that the barista actually came out with notepads and asked my sister and me to write down our feedback while we ate. I thought that was a great way to get honest feedback from customers. When we came back, we tried the lavender and strawberry matchas, and both had a much stronger matcha flavor. They were really good. This last time, we tried their refreshers, and those were also delicious. The only thing I wasn't too happy with was the honeycomb bread. It was much thicker than it had been on our previous visits, so it wasn't as enjoyable this time. Beyond that, we've consistently enjoyed the drinks here. We mainly come to study, and I like that there's plenty of seating and they're open pretty late. The only downside is that it can get VERY loud depending on the day and time. Sometimes it feels like you're sitting in the middle of a family reunion. I'd definitely recommend coming on a weeknight if you're planning to study rather than on a busy weekend.
