Last year, my partner ordered a vegan strawberry cake for my birthday, from Shoshanah. It was the most stressful experience we received from a local baker. Some highlights: 1. Shoshanah kept rescheduling our cake pick-up. Initially it was meant to be picked up on Sunday morning. Then was rescheduled to Monday morning (my birthday day), then to Monday at noon, then Monday just before we told her we had to leave for our dinner reservation. She INSISTED on dropping the cake off even though we had planned to pick it up at her brick and mortar. We ended up having to wait around for her to stop by, which leads me to my next point... 2. Shoshanah left the cake on our front porch, without notifying us until AFTER she was in her car, and had left. Shoshanna told us that she would let us know when she was at our home so we could meet face to face. I guess she did not want to see our faces when we realized the state the cake was in. 3. Like I mentioned, we had a dinner reservation, so when we realized the cake had arrived, we had only a moment to look at the cake before needing to leave. Please see the attached images. All the pictures were taken within 5 minutes of Shoshanna dropping off the cake, us bringing it inside, briefly unboxing it, and leaving. The inspiration behind the cake was simple: classic birthday, like clowns and balloons and sprinkles. Nothing excessive! Somehow Shoshanah managed to make the most depressing vision of a birthday come to life. (Note: we gave her an image of an Online Ceramics clown as inspiration for the art style and vibe. We did not anticipate for her to literally copy the image, poorly, and cut it out, also poorly, and paste it on the cake, again, poorly.) Why did my cake have back rolls? It was slipping and sliding on a mild spring day. The frosting was split and the overall look was pitiful. By the way, we paid EXTRA for cake decorations, and we ended up with this. 4. We did half of the cake payment as a deposit, days before my birthday. Shoshanah demanded the other half of payment (total cost of $150) even after we expressed our deep concern and dissatisfaction, on my birthday. The cake was not cheap, even though it looked like something thrown together by a toddler (sorry, toddlers). It was a horrible experience communicating with Shoshanah. Somehow everything that was within her control as a baker, was not her fault! In fact, she called us bullies for telling her we were sad about my cake and this experience...totally reasonable logic (sarcasm). 5. Anyway, I am tiring myself thinking about this ordeal, but I haven't touched upon the most important aspect: the taste. It tasted bad. I apologize for having to admit this because calling someone's food "bad" feels deeply personal. But it was bad! The cake was dry and yet the crumb was gummy, the flavor was like sweet stale air, and the frosting left an oily residue in your mouth. We had one bite and could not continue. It was supposed to be a simple vegan strawberry cake. I am not sure if I agree with that but it was definitely something that was baked! Shoshanah ended up ghosting us when we asked her if this cake was an accurate representation of the work she is proud of. So, there's that. In truth, I was hoping not to write this review because my goal is to support small local businesses, but after having the owner essentially dodge contact with me, this turned from an issue of a poorly made cake to a total lack of accountability and professionalism. My mom sought out Getting Caked services for my wedding cake, so you can imagine my disappointment when my husband and I took our first bites only to be met with the bland taste of under sweetened and dense sponge described by my friend and father as "cornbread-like". The buttercream was overworked and the strawberry filling was also bland. Beyond the flavor were the sloppy and indistinct layers (see photo). The "strawberry layer" seemed like an afterthought squeezed into the center over uneven layers of bavarian cream which offered little distinction from the buttercream- that we didn't request in our original order. We were left with over 50% of the cake and several unfinished pieces. Now all of this would have been tolerable if the cake was not so expensive ($270), but the money we payed could have gone much further at another bakery and likely would have met or exceeded our expectations. I've attached images of my correspondence with the owner for transparency. We reached out on Monday after returning home. My mom left an email and I phoned and left a voicemail expressing our disappointment with the cake and requesting a refund. I heard nothing and tried again Wednesday with voicemail and text as I wanted this rectified by the end of the week. The owner finally got back on Thursday explaining that her hours are limited, but that I could bring in the cake for her to see. Upon showing her the cake and expressing my concerns, instead of being met with a resolution, I was met with excuse after excuse. "Well, I didn't know how long the cake would be in or out of the freezer." "If I hadn't put the strawberry filling in that way, it would have oozed out the sides of the cake." "Freezing cakes will always have an effect on flavors or textures." All the while I'm thinking to myself, "Then how are other bakeries or even store brands managing the task. Aren't the top tier of most wedding cakes traditionally frozen for a year only to retain their shape, texture, and taste?" I presented several solutions, 50% refund, partial refund/partial credit. She was resistent to all of them and presented none herself. I left her with the cake because she was in a hurry to leave (even though she was technically open that day) and time for her to "Think about it," but had her assure me she would be in touch by Friday. Friday comes and goes and SURPRISE- no word from the owner. I messaged her-no response. In my final message I told her I would give her until Monday to remedy the situation and then I would be writing my review of her services. Come Monday morning she decided to return to email correspondence with my mother. In her email she stated she felt my behavior was "bullying". I feel my behavior was tempered given I was continually dodged and when finally reaching her was treated like I was asking for something unreasonal. After all of that she offered us a credit, but based on her responses I don't trust she would make good and am calling it a loss. The difficulty is that because of the way this was handled by the owner, this cake will now become one of the things I will remember about my wedding, which was an otherwise perfect day. If she had even offered a heartfelt apology in the beginning and made a point to communicate this review probably could have been avoided. My goal is not to tear down her business, but I feel I should spare other Bixby Knolls community members their time and money (note she requests zelle payments, so you will have no recourse if you don't like your cake). As my mother put it in her final response to the owner, "What's much worse than your product, is your response-which consists of line by line excuse and blame. One that essentially blamed us for not 'understanding' your cakes and now for 'bullying' you." I recommend to whoever reads this review-go somewhere reputable and who understands that with business comes a responsibility to the customer if they are unhappy-especially when it comes to an event as important as their wedding day (Bake n' Broil, Sweet and Saucy are great places). Ultimately, the owner of Getting Caked may have retained payment (and the cake), but will not be receiving our business ever again. read more

I was looking for recommendations on Facebook for a cake artist and Shoshi from Getting Caked reached out. I am so glad she did and that I chose her to design my cake. I needed a cake that looked like a OC Bus. All I did was send her a few pictures of our buses and she replicated perfectly! Not only did it look like a bus, it was delicious! Everybody loved it! I have also used her for Cupcakes, they also were delicious! Prices are very reasonable. I have now used Getting Caked for my 50th Birthday cake and it turned out amazing! I ordered and paid for cupcakes with toppers for baby shower. What I got... is something I could have done better at home and I don't bake! I paid $132 for 2 dozen cupcakes!!! Cupcakes were crumbling apart and black and white topper printouts were placed on a number of the cupcakes!!! See picture attached! I messaged Getting Caked with feedback on their mediocre cupcakes and they replied "do you have pictures?!" The audacity of asking for pictures after they know what they gave me!!!! I have ordered a birthday cake and cupcakes on separate occasions. First cake was chocolate with buttercream frosting. Cake was absolutely delicious. It was moist (sorry had to use that word) and flavorful. She included q fresh smash cake. Second time I ordered from her I got red velvet cupcakes in the shape of 15. They were beautiful. Not only that, it was totally last minute. I think I contacted her the night before my daughter's birthday and she accommodated us. Wonderful baker, wonderful personality. We desperately needed a Super Mario Bros. cake for my son's 7th birthday. The other local bakeries had nothing creative to offer and if they did, they wanted a week + to order it. I found Sugar Mama from friends on FaceBook and saw some of their creations. I contacted them, discussed some ideas and swapped pictures online until we found a great idea. They apparently had never made a "Super Mari"o cake before. Well, they can't say that anymore! Even though she had an event this weekend, they still were able to put together a cake that made my son's face light up when he saw it. Oh and by the way...tasty!!!!! Thanks again Shoshi! I ordered a coconut cake with cream cheese frosting from Shoshonna for a very special birthday for my sister. I was expecting a spectacular cake after reading some of the reviews. Shoshonna said she usually does a buttercream frosting but was willing to do a cream cheese frosting for me. The cake was such a disappointment and almost inedible! The cake was so dry that the bottom half of the slices broke off into crumbs. It looked and tasted like a yellow box cake; there was NO coconut flavor in the cake. The frosting was an overly thick layer of buttercream (probably to hold the cake together because it was so dry). The frosting was so sweet that most of the guests at the party didn't eat it. I did ask her for a partial refund but she did not respond to my request. I will obviously never order another cake from Shoshonna - so disappointed! read more

If I could give Soshi zero stars, I would. Disorganized, sloppy, and expensive!!! The cake she made was horrendous and embarrassing. Three weeks (!) in advance, I asked Soshi to make a cake for my Mom's 70-th birthday. I even sent her a picture for inspiration. (Check out the pictures uploaded: the one on the left is the one I sent her, she made the one on the right.) She asked me if I want all the flowers. I said "as many as you can." She made three!!! The cake looked sad and hideous. It was not smoothed out and the decoration looked like it was done by a 4-year old. She asked $70!!!! And was paid $35 in advance as she requested. (money I have never seen again.) ANY vegan restaurant will charge you $60 for far bigger cake - and, more importantly, better looking. She said, well, I don't have a kitchen, can't make it like it is in the picture. Ok, then SAY SO BEFORE YOU TAKE MY MONEY!!!!! Be honest!!! But that was not enough. The day before I was supposed to pick the cake up (before I saw what it looked like), I asked where to pick it up. She gave me two street addresses. NO numbers. I can't stay in the middle of the street and wait for the cake! I asked again and again to be more specific. She would not reply. Eventually, the day of the pick up, she replied: "you can pick it up at this address - some odd address." 30 mins later, she changed the address again, giving me another phone number (not hers!) to text when I am ready to pick it up so that her "partner" can bring it. What?! Are you serious? My mom was supposed to celebrate her birthday in few hours and now you are sending me from place to place, from person to person to pick up the cake? Really? NEVER again will I order anything from her. She is a mess!! read more

We read about the opening of a new bakery in our Cal Heights neighborhood and were very excited that we would be in walking distance! Almost immediately after opening, the COVID 19 pandemic occurred and we like many others began isolating ourselves. She cancelled on me the night before my daughters 5 th birthday ! Not professional enough as far as communication! My efforts of trying to confirm this cake was gonna be completed was useless! She does not return calls for sure for emails you need to write at least a few to get one! Her cakes look beautiful but you need more to be a business! You need to be trusted first!
