I just die when I think about eating lunch here! YEAH, GETA! Like everyone says, the tiniest little restaurant just off a side street of Piedmont Ave! This place is awesome. The rolls are probably 50% off of what you see at regular Japanese places. I like to order the salmon avo roll ($5.50) and the dragon roll ($7.50). The sashimi is soooo fresh, and you really feel like magic is happening in your mouth. The recommendations here are perfect. I ordered what people recommended, and I was super satisfied. They also have very delicious bento boxes for lunch as well. Literally everything is great about the restaurant (food, service, pricing, chefs) except for the fellow CUSTOMERS with you! Sometimes, you just don't even want people to go because the line will take forevs. I think there are like 25 total seats in this restaurant - eep, fight for your lives! I wouldn't recommend a big party (nothing over 4), and if you're alone, you should prepare for a "eat as fast as you can and leave before customers give you death stares" kind of sushi experience. :) I would recommend doing some research on the menu / what to order before going so that you can order right as you get there! Overall, I think Geta is a great value sushi restaurant. It satisfies my raw fish craving without breaking the bank. While the fish is no where near tsukiji level, I thought everything tasted very fresh. I like that two pieces of uni nigiri only costs $7 dollars (other nigiris run around $3-4 for two pieces). Their assortment is not that extensive but they have the basics -- salmon, tuna, ikura, tomago... The hot foods are also delicious! The portions are a bit small but you seriously can't beat the price. Try the katsu curry if you want something more filling. Two forces that I am too weak to overcome: 1. Cheap 2. Sashimi Geta combines those forces, and for that, I am grateful. I love their assorted sashimi plate- 13 pieces of happiness i.e. albacore, salmon, tuna, yellowtail, and shrimp- which is FRESH and BUTTERY and TENDER and properly sashimi-like. The rolls are hefty, stuffed and atopped with fresh ingredients and are all under $6-7. I have to admit that I've been disappointed in the past with the salmon skin roll (sadly, slightly black and charred) and the Philadephia roll (the chunk of cream cheese is overwhelming), but the dragon roll consistently offers plump pieces of eel and avocado. YUM. The wait staff is all smiles and sunshine. This past Halloween they passed out chocolate bars to all their distinctively non-costumed patrons (unless they dressed up as middle-aged adults and college students) as they walked out the door. It's the little details that show they care. Note: Geta is quite small so be prepared to feel thisfriendly with your neighbors and its probably good to leave the political talk/ intimate disclosure of your personal life for when you step outside. read more

I recently talked to a friend of mine, who was born and raised in japan, where she likes to go to get good authentic sushi in the Bay Area. She told me about Geta and that this is the only place (that's reasonably priced) that she goes to. I put the information away and forgot about it. Today, I finally remembered and since I was hungry and in the area, I stopped by. Got super lucky with a parking spot right in front of the restaurant, but was a bit intimidated when I saw at least 5 people standing in front of the door, obviously waiting. Turns out, this place is tiny, so many people just wait for take-out. I put my name down and since I was by myself, I was seated within 10 minutes. I shared a table with a friendly Japanese business man who was so absorbed by his cell phone that I was not able to talk to him much (damn, I would have loved to pick his brain!). Anyway, he seemed to have a standing order, since food was just put in front of him... his sashimi looked delicious. I saw they had Ankimo as a special, but didn't feel THAT adventurous, so I stayed with my faves: the sashimi salad (delicious dressing on the side) and one of my all time favorites: salmon skin roll. I got the lobster salad roll, which just reminded me of a California roll except with lobster. The spicy hamachi- avocado roll was fresh and yummy - they definitely don't skimp out on the fish! Rolls were not rice heavy, which is what I like, and the rice had the perfect amount of rice vinegar so the rice wasn't too mushy. Be forewarned though, the place is tinyyy! I have never had such LARGE slices of salmon on the sake nigiri I ordered...and it's cheaper than most places as it is! It's cheap, the sushi is yummy to my tummy, and the staff here are wonderful. The place is pretty cramped and small, but all is forgiven when the food comes. :) The Spider Roll is a must try. I usually stick to the Rainbow roll, spicy tuna, or unagi-don. The first time here, we were still eating as they were closing up and they didn't rush us or anything. They even gave us an ENTIRE pack of Hi-Chew in Green Apple! ..and there were only 2 of us! My first time here I loved it! The rolls were cheap and hella good! My boyfriend and I were so surprised. Yes, the wait is ridiculously long so be prepared to stand outside/wander around the area (which is what we ended up doing but it is a pretty cute area). We went for dinner so I think the wait was even longer. Seating is VERY limited and super cramped. When we finally did get seated, we (and by we, I mean me) were seated at the table next to the bathroom. Whatevs, as long as I get my raw fish, I'm a happy gal. I think we ordered the spicy tuna roll and the salmon skin roll. After my first bite, I totally fell in love with Geta because the sushi was so affordable and the quality was excellent. Since I was like a walking ambassador for Geta, I needed to go back. My second time, I went with my mama. We went for lunch and the wait was long but not too bad. I think we ordered the same rolls. Keep in mind that I've been raving about this place and my mom and I rarely get some quality mother-daughter bonding (aka not yelling) time so I was excited to take her to Geta. What we got was the complete opposite of my first experience. The flavor was ehhh and the presentation was not as nice as my first visit. Been a loyal customer here for years, about twice as long as Yelp's been around. We always phone in our order, take out, and enjoy the meal at home. The range of Japanese comfort foods here leaves me feeling really happy. And the honestly-made sushi is really darned good, especially at the prices they charge: It certainly beats the daylights out of the dubious pan-Asian-owned-jive-roll sushi places springing up all over town these days. Even when eating at some of the more renowned sushi restaurants in the Bay Area, we would often find ourselves looking at each other and whisper, "it's no better than Geta." I would put the simple negi-hama roll, amaebi, or the whole grilled squid up against any Bay Area restaurant. For sushi, be sure to take a look at the specials board. Tsubu-gai, Suzuki, and the aforementioned Amaebi are some of my favorites here. Chikara-san, seen behind the sushi counter, has been known to rig up the entire refrigerated case for catered events. Geta is a really small restaurant that only fits about 15 people at a time, so if you don't get there as soon as it opens, expect to be waiting a long time before being seated. The good news though is that service is incredibly quick, and we were able to finish our meal in less than 45 minutes, and we each ordered multiple items. Spider Roll: This roll has shrimp tempura and lettuce inside the roll and nothing on the top of the roll. I personally found the lettuce to be a little odd and the roll wasn't super tasty, so I wouldn't recommend this roll. Lion King Roll: This roll has crab meat inside the roll and salmon outside the roll with a flavorful sauce on top, and the whole roll is baked. The lion king roll is my favorite sushi roll to order, because I am a fan of baked rolls that are packed with flavor. This roll met my high expectations for what a great lion king roll tastes like because the salmon was fresh and the sauce was incredibly flavorful, having a Parmesan taste to it. I definitely want to come back to Geta to try out their other sushi rolls, but there are some aspects to the restaurant that need to be improved on. The place is incredibly small and cramped, and unless they think about expanding, this doesn't like look something that can be improved easily. However, the restaurant does not have a comprehensive menu, with many menu items taped on the walls or on the blackboard that has specials, and it makes you wonder if you may have missed something. I almost missed out on the Lion King roll because it was listed on one of the papers posted on the wall and not on the laminated menus -- consolidating the menu is an easy fix and one that would greatly benefit the restaurant. read more

Geta made my sister a plate of flowers out of fish for her birthday. It was such a lovely gesture. Every detail was perfect -- the red rose bud made out of tuna, the white rose bud made out ginger, the four other flower buds made out of a combination of shiso leaf, roe (pollen!), salmon for one flower, a white fish for another flower, rice balls for the round shape, and to top it off, wasabi leaves and one big shiso leaf as well. While the pace of the restaurant is quite upbeat, they're more than willing to allow you time to peruse the menu and ask questions. This is my go-to place for fresh simple sushi at the best price you can get. I don't go here for fancy rolls. The fact that it's a hole in the wall adds to the experience. And the staff is friendly. Recommendations: The red snapper. This is one of few places that serves real red snapper. Many other inexpensive sushi restaurants tend to serve tilapia instead. If you're unfamiliar of the distinction from the look and taste, easiest way to tell is that if the silvery de-scaled skin is still on, it's red snapper. Also the toro is great here (when they have it) and haven't seen it cheaper anywhere else. The only downside to this place is that it closes early. read more

I would give 5 stars for the sushi here and 3 stars for the salmon bento box, so that averages out to 4. We started off with the spicy tuna & avocado, which was excellent. Right off the bat you can tell that the fish is very fresh and the quality is there. Next, the bento boxes came. We both ordered the grilled salmon and got teriyaki sauce on the side. The salmon portion was generous and nicely crisp on the outside. However, the meat itself was very dry so I had to resort to dunking each bite into a sea of sauce to moisten is up. Although the second half of our meal didn't go as well, Geta sure knows how to close the deal at the end with a bag of free pocky. The bill also added up to be a lot lower than what we expected, which was a huge plus. We walked out pretty happy and will definitely be coming back to eat sushi here in the future. :) read more

There's little I could probably add that people haven't said about this place before. Even though I've read so many reviews on it, yes it is VERY small, maybe 15 people max. You wouldn't expect such a small hole-in-the-wall seeming place to be as popular as it is, but 1k+ Yelp reviews aren't wrong, it's definitely 5-stars! The sashimi is so fat and delicious, I literally have dreams about it when I'm away. I don't even remember what else I ate because all I could focus on was how do I get full while still savoring the thick delicious cuts of salmon and tuna. Definitely expect a bit of a wait, especially near dinner time but if you come with 2-3 people, it shouldn't be too bad! There's a paid parking lot next to it, but I suggest looking for street parking! Short: You get a lot higher quality than what you pay for. It's not the kind of place with the fancy Americanized rolls, but everything is simple and fresh. I have had spicy tuna rolls at so many places, but theirs is one of the best! The amount of spicy sauce was perfect, and the pieces of sashimi were giant. You definitely get your money's worth for any kind of roll with raw fish in it! The spider roll and spicy salmon roll were also amazing. The oyako don was tasty, and it came with a lot of really tender chicken. The sashimi plate was one of my favorites because the pieces of fish were so big. The quality of the fish is not sacrificed at all despite the low prices. The place is tiny, so we ended up eating in the car, but that didn't take away from any of the flavor at all! First off, I don't know why people complain about the size of the restaurant. Yes, it is small. Yes, it is cramped. It's a hole-in-the-wall. Maybe it's because I'm from SF and I'm familiar with the dorm room sized restaurant setting. The prices are extremely cheap for what you get, and if you think this is pricey then you have no business eating sushi. I order my usual: lobster roll, blue fin tuna nigiri, uni nigiri, amaebi, and cheese tonkatsu. The fish is always firm and vibrant in color, and the amaebi head is served hot and crispy. The uni is sweet and creamy. This is the first and only place I know of that serves cheese tonkatsu and they serve it to you piping hot and gooey. If your concern is about plating and presentation, take a look around and notice it's not a 5-star restaurant. The food is good and that's all that matters. My only gripe is that my uni was missing from my takeout order one night but I'm sure the quality of it was wonderful...wherever it is... PS. If you are hoping to get a table, I recommend arriving before 8pm because they will take their waiting list down if they know they can't seat you. Keep in mind, they close at 9pm. Takeout is still a good option. You don't have to worry about it getting cold or soggy. It's sushi. read more

Got seated immediately, (cuz it opens at 11.30). Just don't make a noob mistake like me and forget to look at the menu posted on the wall/window. There is so much more variety! We got a shrimp tempura udon and salmon, yellowtail, scallop, and striped bass nigiri. Tempura udon was decent, the broth is light and the veggie tempura is also good. The salmon nigiri is decent as well. A little firmer than normal which I liked. Yellowtail was awesome. Some of the better stuff I have had compared to other sushi places of similar cost. Scallop was fishy tasting, I wouldn't get it again. The striped bass was AWESOME. the mint they add on threw me off in the beginning, but after I tasted it I can't imagine eating striped bass without the mint. They complement each other so well! Geta is hands down my new favorite sushi place. Their prices are cheap and the sashimi is very fresh. You'll definitely get your money's worth here. I've been here a couple of times now and have had the sashimi salad, ama ebi, toro, tempura, and some rolls. Everything tasted great. I highly recommend the ama ebi for those that haven't had it before--it's sweet shrimp nigiri with fried shrimp head (on the side). The one downside to Geta is that the restaurant itself is very cramped and the wait list can be long. I've only been there towards the earlier side of dinner, around 6pm, and luckily the longest wait was only about half an hour. However, this place does do takeout so call in your order if you don't want to wait in line! That's definitely what I'll be doing come fall and winter. read more

I love that none of their roll is drowned in sauce. I mean I love those too but this is the place you go for simpler rolls. For tasting of the fish. We like hamachi Kama and usually order that but It was out by the time we ordered =[ I thought it was pretty early to run out of fish already but I def need to come back earlier to try this next time. we end up getting the salmon Kama to try. It's definitely better than I expected. It is also very fatty (which I love and am not complaining). We got a whole calamari. She gave us a few options but we opt for salt. It's not very flavorful so maybe we should try something else next time. We also got this crab nigiri. It's real crab but again not very flavorful. I would try anything on that menu honestly. I am always on the lookout for cheap, yet good quality sushi. And I think I may have found just the place here at Piedmont. Geta is the ultimate hole in the wall sushi restaurant that can only seat 22 customers (yes, I counted) so be prepared to wait if you come during peak hours. The biggest table can only seat 4 people so I wouldn't suggest coming with a party larger than that. I came here for lunch with my girlfriend and when we walked in, some tables were open but the waitress/hostess was adamant that we sit at the table right next to the restroom. I insisted otherwise. After a few minutes, we finally got a table closer to the door. The food takes about 10 minutes for it to come out after ordering which isn't too shabby considering that it started getting busy after we sat down. Orders from the 'special board' - ($5) Ankimo / monkfish liver: This was my first time trying it and I actually really enjoyed it. It has the consistency of the yolk of a boiled egg and it tastes a little fishy but not in the overwhelming kind of way. I can definitely say I am a fan and I will be getting this more. - ($3.5) Tsubugai / whelk nigiri: I didn't like this very much. The whelk was rubbery, tough to chew and there wasn't much flavor. Nothing about this stands out, it was just bland. - ($6.5) Uni / sea urchin: I don't even know where to begin with this one. I had uni before at Sushi Sam's Edomata. I didn't stop to think and say 'hey, you've had this before and you didn't like it. So don't order it!' I got it anyways because reviews on the uni persuaded me and now I know that sea urchin is just not for me. The order comes with two pieces and after the first one, I struggled to eat the second one. It has this weird after taste that just doesn't sit well on the tongue. But hey, to each their own. - ($5.5) Iwana / Arctic char: not the best. Sure it wasn't bad but I've had better. It tastes a lot like the salmon. Orders from the lunch menu: - ($3.95) Sake / salmon nigiri: as good as it can get. - ($3.95) Ikura / salmon roe: Probably one of my favorites from here. It served as a nice palate cleanser. It was fresh and the flavor was spot on. - ($6.5) Lobster salad roll: I couldn't really taste the lobster and it wasn't like eating a lobster salad like some people said but it wasn't bad. I'd say about a 3.5/5 - ($4.5) Salmon skin roll: I liked this more from the two rolls we ordered. I think the flavor is there and I really enjoyed eating it. - ($13.5) Sashimi combo - chef's choice: the order comes with rice and miso soup and the sashimi pieces are huge. It is really worth is. Our order came with 3 pcs salmon, 3 pcs tuna, 3 pcs yellowtail, 2 pcs white tuna and one cooked shrimp, Everything was fresh and delicious. Overall, you really do get more bang for your buck here. Super sloppy rolls. Doesn't even keep together when you pick it up. Spider roll was not freshly fried and had a soggy stale texture. Fish was decent although weirdly cut. Service was just ok. Cozy atmosphere. I like the drawings on the specials board. read more

Showing some love for one of my favorite restaurants in Oakland. I love how reliably delish Geta is. It is not as inexpensive as the decor of the place would lead you to believe, but the sushi is consistently great quality for this price segment. The business one time forgot to include a roll in take out that I ordered and they were very smooth and easy about ensuring that I got the roll the next time. Kind of a small joint, but there is usually a line out the door which helps back my opinion that this place is a great place to grab some Japanese food/sushi. I'm not a big fan of sushi, but I ordered some Ebi and Spicy Teryaki chicken. It was delicioius and flling. For $6.50 (at Lunch) I got Miso soup, salad, and my main course. If I wasn't such a glutton, I would have had some leftovers. I can't wait to get back here and try some more items!! read more

Geta - Feeling Japanese! - Japanese Near Me - Oakland, California

I've been coming to this place for 8 years now, and it's simply the best bang for your buck of any restaurant I've been. You can come here and spend under 10$ and eat like a king, which is why in recent years an unrelenting mob has formed out front from the time geta opens to the time it closes. I never eat here anymore and opt for takeout, so it is a treat to get a seat tonight with no wait. The guys here remember my name and make me feel like the only person eating their sushi in an insanely packed little restaurant, it's impressive to say the least, and the same guys do it every single night with a smile. I ordered my go to, the chicken teriyaki entree with tempura (for 9$), a spicy tuna roll (5$), a Cali roll full of tasty real crab (try finding this at any other spot for less than 6$), an order of Gyoza (3.5$). At any other restaurant I would be looking at a monstrous bill to fit the monstrous a mount of food I received... But I spend like 20 bucks at geta... This place is the best. I'm pretty sure someone at Geta can teleport because there's no other explanation for why the scallops here taste so FRESH. If you like scallops, you need to eat here, move here, live here, super glue yourself to a chair here (jk please don't - think of the rather large lot of hangry customers waiting outside)...THIS PLACE GIVES MY TASTEBUDS REASON TO LIVE. But come early (or order takeout) and give yourself time to wait because the place is small. Their service may feel rushed, but it's because they're trying to serve as many hungry bellies and clear as many tables for waiting hungry bellies as quickly as they can. I don't think I've ever seen anyone working here sit before. Long story short: This place needs to be on your bucket list. Hotate heaven. Hardworking employees (and one teleporter.) read more
