Sadly, the skyline is tainted by a brown haze. The pollution is so blatantly obvious, looking North and South, the brown haze fades. I did not waste the data on a bad picture.

This was one of my friend's first time camping, and as such, we choose Gateway National Park (Floyd Bennett Field). Here is some information that we wish we had known before booking. Overall, it was good to get out of the city, but there are some downsides as described below. 1) Get some good bug spay cause there are lots of mosquitoes. A couple of trails were actually closed due to the mosquitoes in the area. However, once we lathered ourselves with insect repellent with 99.9% Deet, the bugs didn't mess with us too much. 2) The raccoons come out at night. We were informed that there was a raccoon problem, and that you should put all of your food before dark. The person was right. Make sure you bring something to store the food in (cooler or other locking container) and you will not have any problems. 3) The campsites are pretty much in an open field. Sites T14 and T15 have some privacy, but the rest are open for everyone to see. Also, the grey on the campsite map is a real depiction of the paved areas. The areas surrounding the campsites are old paved runways, so expect cars and motorcycles driving around the area. 4) Noise...what noise? Having previously participated in a couple of 5Ks at Floyd Bennett Field, I knew that there could be some activities there during the day. However, we were truly surprised at the incessant woman on the loudspeaker screaming "3..2..1..GOOO!", the guy practicing landing a helicopter from 2:00 - 8:00 PM, the jets flying over to land at JFK until 11:00 PM (not too bad, because the noise was mostly subdued by the woman on the loud speaker), and the jets taking off starting at 6:00 AM (this was a LOUD wake up call). 5) There are flushable and clean bathrooms by the camp store that are open from 8:00 AM to 7:30 PM. Also, you can purchase firewood at the camp store. The staff there are very friendly and can also provide tips on local food and entertainment.

It's magical if you like to be far from the maddening crowd, and can handle being far from a working toilet too. As you head further out, the beach has, thankfully, less garbage than by Fort Tilden, though you might find, as we did, when you stroll along the shore an occasional dead blowfish, jellyfish, a horseshoe crab. The music you hear will be surf, gently rolling in or hammering at the shore and the occasional screeches of birds. A top site for birding, this beach didn't disappoint and we didn't even visit at peak migrating times. Just be careful if you walk further up along the sands and watch for signs that tell you not to disturb the nesting areas. Nature's ecosystem is more fragile than you think. The beach is a trek from Fort Tilden. You do need a permit if you have a car as the rangers here do check. If you don't have a car, be prepared to hike, and hike, and hike from Fort Tilden. It's a shorter walk if you take the trails from Fort Tilden and might seem endless if you walk along the shore. For all those of you who post on your profile that you love beach walks, well, Breezy Point will offer you the chance to prove your words!

A buddy of mine has had a house on Breezy Point for years, its been with his family for about three generations. From Grandpa, the ole salty dog, too his parents, everyone within his family and amongst his friends -- everyone seemed so happy and light of heart. Beach living can do that for a person. Changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes. We fished off the docks, we swam in tbe water at sunlight, played music, danced and sang after the clam bakes at moonlight. Cracked a brew or two in the process. The strip of stores have minimal offerings, but with all the peaceful and easy feelings to swim within on land, the necessities can wait.

They are sparkly clean with a big reflection from the sun! It burned my eyes looking at them in the sun. One good thing about this park is the number of spider webs that you can climb onto besides the steps that you can go onto. This park also has clean sprinklers at the feet level and big sprinklers that come and go. Very clean and safe. Most important thing is the safety issue. I have a stroller with belongings and they were untouched the whole time I was in the park so that's a plus! Also this park is gated from the public and only families with toddlers and kids can go in. Very family oriented. Will definitely stop by more when I'm in this area.

The day I visited there were many Nannies with small children going in and out of the gate. It's a place I will not enter unless I'm with a friend that has small children. There's bucket and tire swings, an amphitheater spray feature, two granite slides set into a hill, a rustic net climber, and a sandbox and sand table. As I said I love this landscape with rustic structures and stone bridge. You need to visit and enjoy! By the way, no restroom!

I brought my 2 year old and I had to be with her at all times. She kept running around the sprinklers and the mini bridges in the sprinkler section were drenched with 2 to 3 feet water! It is like a mini water park! Just the bad thing about it is the crowd. Too many kids running around all over the place. I don't really like the brick steps they make for the bridges. They are very tiny and made out of bricks. Not good for 2 year olds or little toddlers. It is not that safe! This park is very big and has different children parks. Besides the brick tower and sprinklers, they got the sand area with slides that no one goes on because the slides are scorching hot! The slides in the sand area go very fast! I went on with my daughter and we both went zooming down like a rocket. We always ended up going so fast that is somewhat dangerous because we always ended up on the sand instead of the end of the slide! So scary and fun! The sand is very annoying too but then they have a lot of sprinklers with half a feet of water for us to wash the sand off! This is such a fun, big park for toddlers and children. They got many swings too! But my daughter did not like the swings though, probably because she is too young! Restrooms are very crowded especially when it comes to the women's restroom! There is always a line and it sucks so bad when you need to go really badly!
