Friendly and attentive staff, quick service, feel a little deflated. Let me preface: At no point did I feel these guys were dishonest. I took my Porsche Cayenne in for a common coolant leak problem. Overall my experience with the staff was great- I initially called after hours and they immediately called me back and addressed all my questions and made me feel at ease. The experience was less stellar after I received my estimate, upon which my stomach fell straight through my butt. I got on the computer and searched for the parts quoted and found their markup was INSANE. Here's a few of the parts to give you an idea---These are for genuine Porsche parts: Water Pump: $514 /// Online @ FCPEuro for the same part: $383 Thermostat Kit: $355 /// Online @FCPEuro for the same part: $296 with Coolant Upon learning this I called and asked to provide my own parts. I was met with a higher per hour labor rate and no warranty even though the parts were genuine Porsche. I could literally hear my service guys face turn upside down through the phone at my gall to ask about it. So I bit the bullet. I think this may be standard with most shops, which sucks. A day later the car was done and I received the online invoice to pay. To my surprise another $290 TO INSTALL AN O RING was added without my permission or knowledge. I called and they took the charge off- which I appreciated. I understand these guys have a business to run, and I'm sure the work they did was top notch. But somehow I'm leaving feeling like I could have gotten a better deal somewhere else for the same quality of work. It's not often I feel like I should have had the dealership quote the work.. I imagine it wouldn't be far off. They charged an additional $180 in fees to use a credit card (this was stated upfront), $55 for overnight shipping with the dealership less than 7 miles away, and quoted me a hilarious $292 for an oil change which I promptly declined. I don't feel great. But my car is working as it should and it didn't take long to fix. Running a business is hard, and with a few tweaks they probably could have made a repeat customer out of me. Working with Hunter led me to a vehicle I could afford and fit my specs completely, and I felt great about my trade-in value too. I'm truly enjoying my 2023 Rivian which only had 1000 miles on it (smelled factory new and still had plastic on everything) but saved me $15,000. Somehow he found me financing at exactly what I'd been paying for a much older problematic G-Wagon (which his shop was fully equipped to fix) and I'm totally loving how cheap the Rivian is to drive. My former $200/trip to the cities is now $12.50 in electricity! read more

Brought my car in for a 40,000 mile check up. The cost was north of $1000. When I picked up the car, it was running Rough with warning lights on the dash. Brought it back, was told it would be costly for them to find out what the problem was. They suggested I bring it to the Porsche dealership as it was still under warranty. Mind you, They charged me for the 40,000 mile check up, which would've been covered under warranty, and stated to me that it's not their responsibility to let me know that it's still under warranty. I get it I should keep track of my own warranty, I just assumed an ethical Garage would check that before doing work, my bad, lesson learned .I took it to the Porsche dealership, they lifted the hood and noticed a line that was unattached during the service at GAW was not reattached. It provided oxygen back to the turbo. They reattached that , about two minutes, and the problem was resolved Overall, attention to detail was dramatically overlooked by GAW. My brother-in-law has had great success with them, unfortunately, I can't say the same. read more

My car battery completely died outside of my friend's house- I couldn't jump it or put it into neutral to be towed, so AAA came to install a new battery. To my understanding, AAA did not reset the computer or something, so my sensors were all screwed up. VW dealership couldn't get me in until next week, where they were going to charge me a premium just to inspect the car to determine the issue before even servicing it. German Auto Works fit me in for an appointment the day after I called, and fixed my car's issue within a matter of minutes. I highly recommend this business- the workers operate with integrity, efficiency, and kindness. I will definitely be coming back for future services and questions! read more

When I call them to tell them I need to bring my car in, half the time they just tell me over the phone how to fix it, and I don't know anything about cars. I trust them. I've taken an Audi and a VW there, and they know these cars. Straight shooters. I made an appointment to get a new battery installed in my BMW X1 I showed up on time and waited an hour and 15 minutes and an employee came out from the back and said "your estimate is finished" I was shocked since I had stopped in a few days before and asked "how much for a new battery."After about a half minute on his computer he gave me an estimate. I said I was expecting a new battery installed which is why I made the appointment and I just wasted over an hour for nothing. He said that I was being unreasonable. I have been going here for 5+ years now. Reliable and honest. Labor rates are slightly higher but lower than the dealer. They do good work, offer rides while your car is in the shop, call with estimates and a detailed list of what needs to be done why, what can wait, and actuals always come within 5% or so of estimates. And by the way, contrary to their counterparts, they take great care to explain the work they will do and answer all your questions thoroughly. Bonus, good mags to read if you need to wait, such as Newsweek, Time, National Geographic. read more

DO NOT PATRONIZE THIS BUSINESS! - ASK ME WHY? See below..... I took my BMW X5 in for a valve cover gasket service back in July 2015. German Auto Works was referred to me by a friend who knows the owner quite well and has used them for many years and also bought several cars over that period of time. I figured my cars would also be in great hands. I figured wrong. I'm usually a dealer guy but the valve cover gasket service is very straight forward and was most cost effective to have German Auto complete it. The repairs to my car went fine and were a couple of days late due to fault troubleshooting but they picked up the cost of my rental car which I appreciated (the dealer would have provided a loaner car for the duration of the repair so it was only fitting). Roll the clock forward to March 2016 - I received a call from my insurance company inquiring if I had been in a personal injury auto accident back in July 2015. After my initial shock I told them to get their facts straight and call me back - clearly I had not been in any sort of accident. I received a call back the next day indeed confirming that MY CAR had been in a personal injury auto accident on German Autoworks property. The service manager was backing my car out of their bay on their premises and ran over a customer/pedestrian who was standing in front of their shop on their property - the accident crushed his foot under my rear wheels and knocked him to the ground in the process. The police responded to the accident and my insurance information was given to the police officer without my consent. Further my name and insurance information were recorded on the police report without my consent and with NO NOTICE to me from those involved at German Autoworks that this accident occurred with my car!! German Autoworks never contacted me to advise of this accident taking place even months later. The only way I found out about it was the fact that German Autowork's insurance company contacted my insurance company asking for payment from my policy to cover this claim for the accident victim!!! Instead of German Autoworks taking care of this situation with their garagekeepers insurance - as one would think should take place especially after bringing your car in for a repair, writing them a check for over $2,000 - now my insurance is getting socked with a claim for the negligence of their employee and my driving record/insurability is forever impacted. All this for trusting them with my car. The owners of German Autoworks never reached out to me after I contacted them to offer any kind of resolution. They are now effectively leaving it in the hands of their insurance company to come after my insurance as the primary policy in the accident!? I also recently learned that the employee that was driving my car negligently causing this accident is no longer with German Autoworks. One has to make certain assumptions as to why... I wouldn't trust this shop with my lawnmower let alone my BMW's. If you do decide to do business with them make sure you take your insurance card out of your vehicle while they are servicing it and perhaps better if you can be on site during the repair to monitor their employees driving your car. Absolutely pathetic excuse for a way to do business. read more

I recently moved in Minneapolis and purchased a car and was unsure of my purchase. The dealership mechanics told me they looked over my car and it was fine. I still didn't feel confident because I could hear rattling. I took it to German Auto Works for a second opinion. I was helped by both Steve and Hunter the owners who immediately identified that the car had been in a fender bender and had some clips missing connecting two panels which was creating the noise I was hearing. I made an appointment to have them check the mechanics out, they gave me a loaner while my car was in the shop, and to my surprise, let me know there was nothing mechanically wrong with the car other than the panel clips missing. They provided a checklist of what was looked for my reference and the fee was pleasantly reasonable. These guys are professionals, honest with their assessments and fair with cost. read more

I needed some front-end work done on my 2004 MB with 104,000 miles on it. A couple of other places diagnosed the problem correctly, but I went with GAW because of location and excellent Yelp reviews. I was not disappointed. Nick in particular was helpful, cooperative, and service-oriented. A mysterious rattle appeared after the work was done, and they were all over the problem and fixed it immediately. I had shopped around, and their rates were competitive with other non-dealer operations, and about 30% less than the dealer. Bottom line: These guys are great. read more

My husband and I have been taking our Audi A4s here for at least 4 years. We have had great work done, and I believe these guys are honest and know their stuff. We had one incident where special order tires of ours came in and we weren't notified in a timely matter that they were waiting, but all of our other experiences have been great (like today when my car was done TWO DAYS earlier than expected). Been a customer since the 90's and always had a fantastic experience with Tom and Dave. Then a few years ago, German Auto Works changed owners and the quality of service started slipping. I've been looking for a new mechanic after several bad experiences over the last year, including finding a McDonald's wrapper on my passenger foot well, car usually returned with excess miles and the front seats adjusted like young adults were joyriding, grease and dirt smeared over the vehicle's carpets and interior, body damage from their tightly packed parking lot, poor communication, suspicious new problems immediately after they work on it, they overbook appointments and don't start working on your vehicle until sometimes DAYS after you drop it off, and the final straw was catching them in a lie about something my car needed during my last visit. I really want to recommend this place, but right now, I just can't. read more

Do not trust German auto works! They kept repairing the same thing over and over on my car but never fixed it. They said the same thing kept breaking...but 5 times in a row? They just never fixed it!! I took it to the dealer after spending several thousands at German auto works and the dealer came right out and told me I was ripped off by German auto works! The dealer fixed it for under $100 dollars and no problems since!!!! I have friends who said they have had similar problems here! Don't trust them! read more

Would not recommend this guys, this is my experience with them: Took my Audi there because it wouldn't start. They call me 2 hours later telling me all the things I had to change on my car (going to about 4000 dollars) but no mention on why my car would not start. When I brought it up they came up with some odd explanation. I declined half of the things they wanted to do on the car. Later I received another call, that now they figured out what was wrong and could fix it. They said my car would be done in 1-2 days. It took about a week but they never called me, I had to call every other day since they claimed they would call the following day and they wouldn't. Finally got my car, the wind chill fluid read low, I took it back, they told me the container was broken (was not when I took it there) and that "they will call me and fix it for me when they get the new part", they never called me, I had to take it to the dealer. Horrible experience, but it does not end there. About 3 months later, my car started making a very ugly noise on the left front wheel area. I took it to the dealer, after the wheel pretty much stopped working (had it towed there). They told me that my control arm was changed and not adjusted properly and they had to change it all (coincidentally the control arm was one of the things that German auto car "fixed" 3 months before). Really terrible, would recommend to stay away, at least if you have an Audi. read more

Took them 10 minutes to troubleshoot using a flashlight. Gave me a quote for about $2500 and suggested getting me on the schedule. I chose to get 3 additional opinions from surrounding auto repair shops who also specialize in German auto repair. ALL came in $800-1000 LESS in labor cost and ALL said if it were their car, there's no rush. I'm grateful for the lesson learned. read more

I took my BMW to German Autoworks because I received a coupon/flyer in the mail. Unfortunately the part required to fix my car could only come from the dealer, so no real savings there. I was happy to have the coupon though, as I was assessed $48 for "shop supplies" on my $600 service. I asked what that was and they said, rags, etc. I had a $750 bill at the BMW dealer and was charged only $7.50 for "shop supplies". The work was done as promised and it was handy to have a loaner, but next time I will ask for the "shop supply" as part of the quote - seems a bit high. read more

I had a weird noise going on with my Jetta, so I called German Autoworks to get an estimate on how much it would be to take a look at. The guy on the phone said he would look at it for no charge! So already, I was very happy with the customer service. They had my car for a couple days because they couldn't seem to figure out what the problem was, because there ended up not being one. I apologized for being paranoid and even though they kept my car a day longer, and took more time to search for the issue, they still didn't charge me! These guys were awesome and super friendly and whenever my car has a (real) problem again, I will definitely be bringing it back! read more
