This phenomenal husband wife team are incredibly kind, fair and conduct business with the highest integrity. Chris is the 3rd generation automobile aficionado in his family. He worked for and eventually left BMW because he had too much integrity to remain. He is extremely knowledgeable, very thorough and a very kind soul. My car honestly runs better than it has in the last 3 years under the care of the dealership. She drives like new again and I don't feel like I have been ripped off or ill advised as I unfortunately feel when I have taken it to the dealerships. By the way - oil changes every 15K miles is NOT good for any car including BMWs - despite what the dealerships tell you. Take care of your investment, even if BMW won't. I used to take my old 528 to German Auto Salvage where many of the same guys were working back in the day. I loved that car and I loved taking it to those guys. If anything, German Auto Sport is even better. No matter what you do, a BMW is going to be expensive to repair. Makes me wonder why I even own one. But Chris and Co managed to get my new (to me) bimmer back into shape and on the road for less than their estimate. They did fast work. Everything is tight and clean And there was no pressure to perform work that didn't need to get done (or that could be delayed) I can't even count the number of times he used the words "no charge" for little things that I normally get dinged for elsewhere. There's a reason every review here so far has been 5 stars. It boils down to this: If you want a place that will serve you a latte while you listen to classical music and watch a giant flat panel tv in the waiting room, go someplace else. I brought my BMW Z3 into the shop this morning, having made an appointment late yesterday. I'd met Chris several years ago in a drive-by and enjoyed his enthusiasm about my car, which continued unabated today as soon as I arrived. He cannot help himself from including you in his thinking process about what's up with the car, which I totally love. It's like pearls of long-time experience flowing in a river as he works, walks back and forth, when really I'm just there talking to the guy at the counter taking my info...so a couple of my problems are solved before I'm even signed in. The guy at the counter is very happy and relaxed, and also seems eager to hear what Chris is telling us, which is a great sign because I think shit rolls downhill and if the boss is a creep, the guys who work for him are not happy. So I get checked in, give them the details about what I know that's broken (a bunch of little stuff like the fan, the windshield washer sprayer and the odometer light). They have agreed to spend an hour with the car for $115 and do a total check-over and give me a price for fixing whatever's broke. The counter guy offers to give me a ride somewhere in the meantime and I decline and wander off a couple blocks away to Peet's and the great bookstore next door to wait. Chris calls me when he's ready for me to return. He has fixed the windshield sprayer, and charges me way less than we agreed for him just to check the car over and give me estimates. And then he shows me a couple things about the car, things that don't need fixing, just watching. I get the feeling that this guy cares about the car like it's a living being. He's not telling me stuff that he's gonna get paid to fix. He's chatting down about these Z3s in general, I'm talking about why I love driving mine. I love having a mechanic who is a car buff, who loves the kind of car I'm driving and knows a ton about it. He gives me contact info for his salvage guy so I can get my own parts if ever necessary. So, yeah, you can't eat off the floor of the shop, but I don't go there to eat, I go there to drink in the experience of the guys who know what makes my car amazing and what makes it run great and who even enjoy doing it. I am over all these car owners who buy BMWs and expect repair bills as that of a Hyundai. And yes, I am writing this review to refute those that aim to discredit Chris and the team at GAS. Why do I take my car here? Complete service. There are very few places like this around. You can take your car here and feel like you're talking to someone who knows BMWs inside and out and is after your best interest. no corporate drones here. Why am I wearing my loyalty on my sleeve? There's still humanity in business. I discovered Chris 5yrs. earlier (at the old address) as I was trying to find someone to reattach my rearview mirror. I arrived while they were closed and moving to the current location. I told Chris about my situation and instantly he told me how to do it myself. Since then I have received nothing but excellent service from this business. Regardless of the nature of my repairs: from simply cleaning battery contacts, to installing a new radiator or dash. Let's face it. 5yrs. Is a long time to remain loyal to a business. I design retail stores and deal with numerous contractors and material vendors. I only do business with the ones that fulfill their contract; I stay with GAS for the same reason. read more

Real talk! BEST AUTOSHOP I ever been too....Simple and honest.." they make fixing cars look like a sport". My 2008 MINI cooper was stalling a bit , I was so worried it was the transmission since word on the street is thats the first and most common part to go on a MINI. They are great. They didnt charge me for a storage fee while we waited for ever to deal with my warranty company. They warranty their work for 2 years. When i decided to do some work on the car myself they answered all my questions and gave me a step by step guide on how to finish something i was working on. And when i needed a part they hooked me up and got me out of a jam!!!!! When i needed a special tool to finish the job they found a guy who had it and i was able to get the tool right away and finish the job the same day! These guys saved me a ton of money on a repair that had been quoted by another indy at over $4000 to replace the steering rack. Turned out it was an issue with the front strut. I suppose you have to have been quoted $4000 before you can believe that an $800 repair is cheap, but it cured the issue and I have not had any problem since. Since then I take the ol' bimmer to GAS for whatever I can't do myself. My 10-year old 545 is full of electronic computer-controlled God Knows What so I was skeptical at first, but overall I would recommend GAS to anyone whose BMW baby is out of warranty. I moved here from Delaware in November of 2017. Prior to relocating to the Bay Area, I had always taken my vehicle to a local trusted automotive BMW specialty shop to conduct all of my vehicle's maintenance - from the routine oil changes to all major repair needs. I learned of German Auto Sport (GAS) through a Google search and after having read the many reviews of other BMW specialty shops I decided to take my vehicle to GAS in Berkeley, CA. Bottom line is that I have never felt like I was being taken advantage of - both Chris and Yar take great care in explaining things to me with regards to the mechanical work required and why. Customers are given a written quote and should the numbers change [from what was quoted], the final payment has always been less based on the maintenance work required. Chris is the kind of guy you would feel good about referring your mom, sister, anyone you really care about to. He is already very reasonably priced, so don't go in there thinking about low-balling him further, because you will be getting more than your money's worth at his stated prices. If you treat him right he will bend over backwards to reciprocate. Nobody does higher quality work at the prices he charges. If you want that "free carwash and interior vacuuming" you can pay $150 an hour at other places to get it. If you want dealer or better quality service and repairs at a price you can afford, go see Chris and his crew. He is passionate about BMWs and making sure you get the most out of yours. I first heard about German Auto Sport a few years ago after having the brake master cylinder replaced on my '86 e30 by a general mechanic who gave me a "good deal" as a favor to a mutual friend. I looked them up, read the reviews, and thought to myself, "No way. This kind of place only exists in the movies." I couldn't wait until my car needed something done so I could see for myself. Well, it wasn't long after that that I had the opportunity so I jumped at it. The first person I met was the owner, Chris; he and I spoke like old friends. It was obvious he loves Bimmers. I explained the symptoms, he named a few of the usual suspects as he thought aloud and told me he'd check it out and get back to me. Within a couple of hours I got the call, the work needed made sense so I went with it. When I went to pick it up, Sean greeted me warmly and Yar explained the repair to me in terms I could understand without making me feel like an absolute idiot. As we discussed the car, and BMWs in general, Gill chimed-in, adding useful info, followed by Chris. Again, it was obvious, these guys know and love BMWs. Out of curiosity, I asked how much they'd charge to replace the brake master. Sean gave me a quote (about the same as the general mechanic) and noted that the car doesn't need the work...a practice I'm not familiar with because typically shops will getcha for anything they can. Huge points in my book! Fast forward a couple of years, I've done business with all of the major BMW shops in the area and there is no doubt that Chris and his crew are top of the line. I have a "new" '88 e30 that needed a good deal of love which made it and me (I work 7 days a week) "ripe for the picking," if you know what I mean. I took it straight to Chris. His crew gave me the skinny on its condition and what it would take to get me safely and comfortably to Texas. Subsequently, he had my car more than I did for the first month or so that I owned her (Maribel). But now we are both riding happily along, all thanks to these guys. Now, truth be told, you won't wanna eat anything off of their floor, they don't have any discernable accents, and they're far from perfect, but for me, my money, and my BMW, German Auto Sport is THE place to go for honest and upfront service at a reasonable cost. read more

German Auto Sport is, without exception, the only BMW shop in the Bay Area (never mind the local dealerships!) that I trust to fix my car properly and, most importantly, to be HONEST in the process. Having relied on the liars and crooks that call themselves dealerships for a number of years, I consider myself lucky to have found Chris and his team of guys at the end of 2008. Since then, I've learned a few things about them and the kind of business Chris runs: First, these guys are absolute experts at what they do. What's more, they work with integrity and pride, i.e., they stand by their work and keep their word. That's pretty exceptional when it comes to Bay Area BMW shops. Second, these guys are honest. If they can get you a deal on a part, for example, even if it takes a bunch of extra calls to do so, they will. They'll explain to you exactly what the problem is, why you're having that problem, and how they arrived at the number they've quoted you in order to fix that problem. Third, these guys will go above and beyond to help you out. They're just like that; it's in their nature or something. I've stopped by the shop after hours, or without forewarning, numerous times over the past few years - including one time around 8:00 pm when I was driving nearby and realized I had a flat tire. Not only was someone there, he was nice enough to stop working on the car he was clearly there late to work on in order to change my tire for me. He easily could have told me to call AAA, but I could tell it didn't even occur to him. (In fact, he was incredibly good natured about it!) In short, these guys have your back. Chris has gone out of his way multiple times to help me out with my BMW, and he is a fountain of knowledge when it comes to all things BMW/Mini. I live right a block away from an independent BMW shop near downtown Oakland, but I still drive to Chris' shop for all my car needs because I completely trust him with it. And that is difficult to say nowadays, in a time when too many mechanics will try to squeeze the most money out of you while skimping on the quality of their work. I own 6 BMW automobiles and have had my share of bad experiences with shops. When you take your car to German Auto Sport, you get an honest opinion of what they believe to be the issue with your vehicle and a fair price to fix it. Period. I am adjusting my review since Yelp support thought some languague I used initially was not accroding to yelp guidelines: I feel like I narrowly escaped being taken advantage of. Don't let the nice sociable nature lull you into a false sense of honesty. It saddens me that I have to write a bad review on GAS as I've been recommending family and friends to them for years. Especially since I know these guys and we are part of the same local race and car community. Sorry Chris, I am no longer a fan of GAS and can't recommend you any further. Here is the story: I took my e30 M3 in for a diagnosis, got quoted two hours. After the two hours I get a call saying they were not able to detect the problem and wanted a book rate of 4 hours for further work, and btw the first diagnosis was only 1.5hours. I say go, a day later they call me back increasing my diagnosis time by 100%. This is a straight forward job and they miss quote by that much? I stopped work on everything and drove it to another shop. They ended up charging me 2 hours to check valve clearances 75% markup on parts and NOT tell me the problem is rod knock. This is text book strategy for a company looking to milk their customers. The next day: Wow, couldn't believe this, I just got a call from Chris, we had an unpleasant discussion with Chris calling me cheap and insulting me several times. The conversation ends like this: "Chris what is the objective of your call, what do you hope to achieve?" "I called to clown you over the yelp review" read more

The intimidation tactics by Chris of German Auto Sport continue: today I got a nasty voicemail from him (message me if you'd like a copy). Again, ask yourself, "How many negative reviews of G.A.S. went missing because of intimidation tactics and threats of lawsuits by Chris?" How many more would there be? Is this who you want to do business with? Everything I've written is truth and my views on what happened. No lies. California is an anti-SLAPP state, so I feel confident in writing about my experience, merely to help others avoid my fate. Continuing on my "previous review" (see below)... As if the verbal abuse and warranty contention weren't enough, I encountered VARIOUS OTHER PROBLEMS: * My car would be in the shop for days at a time while I waited for an assessment on the differential and other work. My phone calls, which were not excessive at all--I'm patient and don't use my car every day--were routinely not returned (Chris told me at one point that they were changing their phone system; really?) Days went by with no status update, and finally I had to physically go down there to see what was going on. * I caught Chris in what I think is an outright lie. Several times when I got my car back from G.A.S., the stuff I keep in the trunk was pushed all the way to the back of the trunk (toward the tail lights). After it happened a few times in a row (when I had brought the car in for various repairs in addition to the differential stuff), I asked Chris and he said (after hesitating), Oh, we had to get at the top of the struts in the trunk. False. During that time I had not brought the car in for any repairs that would require that, certainly not three trips in a row. Later, I asked one of the mechanics about it, who mentioned that Chris goes up a hill on the way home and had been taking my car home at night. I guess for the several days at a time that Chris kept my car in the shop, he'd use it to commute home, hot-rodding up the hill so hard that all the stuff in the trunk, like jumper cables, was slammed toward the tail lights. This happened at least a few times. (Chris might claim he had to have the car at home to test it when it was completely cold in the morning; not so--you can leave it at the shop and do that.) * One day when I was on my bike on the way to G.A.S. to pick up my car, I saw my car fly past on San Pablo Avenue with Chris at the wheel. When I arrived at the shop, Chris was also just arriving in my car. I stood there watching in amazement as he and one of his other customers stepped out of my car. He was using my car to shuttle this customer (and maybe others?) from BART. Would you like your car used as a taxi? Apparently you can do that at German Auto Sport! * My trunk was not closing tightly enough, so the trunk light was staying on, which repeatedly drained the battery. Chris found "a clip" in his shop that they could use to Jerry-rig the trunk latch (hello, freebie!!). A couple of years later, unbeknownst to me, the clip had slowly became loose, and the car battery kept draining until I had to replace it. My new shop, Bavarian Professionals, replaced the trunk latch, a $20 part, saying, Why would they (G.A.S.) skimp on such an inexpensive part that's so fast to replace (only to have you end up repeating the problem a few years down the road)? I think it was just sloppy work on the part of G.A.S.--a lack of organization. Or were they just trying to avoid the bother of ordering a part they couldn't make much money on? * At the very beginning, Chris didn't seem to want to put in writing the warranty for the used differential. I had to ask a couple of times, and the vibe I got was like, Hey, I'm your buddy, we're casual here, why be so uptight? Am I supposed to be foolish enough to take a verbal warranty? Are the G.A.S. customers happy only until this casual approach ends up in disaster (as it seems to have done so many times, based on the negative reviews)? Stay away from this shop. Check the negative reviews carefully. Consider the possibility that Chris has been using scare tactics like those he's used on me to scare others away from writing negative reviews. read more

You don't have to manage your expectations after reading these reviews because you won't be disappointed. Chris and his wife are awesome, I am so glad I found them, thanks to Yelp. My only fear now is if for whatever reason, they move out of the area!!! I have a 2002 BMW 330i. It has never had major issues (knock on wood) but since it is getting older, some of the warning lights came on and needed some TLC. The thought of having to go to a dealership just turned my stomach so thanks to the reviews on Yelp, I was elated to find German Auto Sport. I recently brought my wife's 2002 BMW 530i to German Auto Sport for brakes, and an oil change, after the in dash indicator light came on. This was the first time Chris, (the owner,) had seen this vehicle, as the factory warranty had recently expired. Until this point, this vehicle had only been serviced at the dealership, in Concord, Ca... Chris surprisingly went over the car, as a surgeon inspects a patient before surgery. He explained that he wanted to familiarize himself with the auto, and check on its past maintenance. Normally at other shops, this is a recipe for finding additional things wrong with the car, and using scare tactics to encourage additional repairs. Who actually takes the time to honestly evaluate your car, and explain in detail how well the car was maintained? Chris does! The only recommendation he made after his undercarriage, and engine compartment inspection was that we might want to replace the fuel filter. He was not trying to sell me a new filter, just letting me know what was going on with my wife's car. He even took the time to explain why you should change your oil every 7,500 miles, instead of the 15,000 recommended by BMW for the newer vehicles using synthetics. He didn't have to sell the service, because I was already requesting it. He explained, "shortly after 7,500 miles, the oil begins to break down, leaving sludge deposits on the inside of your engine." I had heard this before but no one had taken the time to show me the sludge buildup on an engine component he had removed earlier from another vehicle. Chris is a square shooting, plain talking, plethora of BMW information, and he shares his knowledge freely with his customers. He is not trying to rip you off, or hit you up for expensive diagnostics. He and his lead mechanic, Shahryar, are a dynamic duo. Oh yeah, the brake job was a thing of perfection, Shahryar cleaned the calipers and the rotor mounts with a wire brush, and lubricated all of the moving parts with anti-seize compound. I had never seen a brake job done with so much precision and pride. I returned home, and looked in the service manual only to find that BMW recommended that the fuel filter be replaced during the 100,000-mile inspection, and there was less than 70,000 miles on the car. I called Chris, who then took the time to explain that although BMW recommended changing the fuel filter, as well as the spark plugs at 100,000 miles, he had rarely seen plugs or fuel filters last beyond 70,000 - 80,000 miles. He went on to say, "basically the same plugs and filters that were installed in my wife's 530i, as well as my 2001 X5, were also installed in BMW's 1996 models. The difference was that in 1996 the manual suggested an inspection ll service at 70,000 miles." Chris told me that he has replaced numerous fuel pumps, for people that were trying to wait for the 100,000-mile inspection, and this could have been avoided had they simply done the 100,000-mile inspection, at 70,000 miles. He said, "The additional strain placed on the fuel pump by pumping gas through a clogged filter almost always causes a premature failure." He then added, "The filter is approximately $90.00, and the fuel pump is approximately $600.00." I'll sum it up by saying, Chris and Shahryar provide an experience that is rare indeed in this fast paced, take your money and run world of auto repair. If you are looking for honest, straight shooters, who know your late model and older BMWs inside and out, then look no further. These guys are the real deal. My advice to German Auto Sport is get ready to expand your shop, and hire mechanics - as the word gets out, you are going to be inundated. Just make sure you always make room for our cars :) read more

I have a lot of experience in automotive work as I used to build and work on my own autos and motorcycles (when the dinosaurs roamed) so I am a bit picky about my shops. I purchased an M5 from Weatherford motors, and they have pretty much done all the work for a decade. They have been excellent and always treated me well. No complaints. I started hearing a knock in the engine, and decided to bring it in to get checked out. The guys let me know the bad news, a rod knock on number 2. This was big, and since the car was 10 years old, I needed to find out if it was worth keeping. I needed a second opinion. I did try a local independent shop a while back, and was not satisfied. Yelp pointed me to German Auto Sport and Chris, so I called. I immediately felt I was part of the decision making process, and he was very accommodating to my requests. They tore down the bottom end, confirmed Weatherford's call, and allowed me to view the damaged parts and the crankshaft. We all agreed that I dodged a bullet, replaced all the rod bearings and she drives great with no noise. Additionally we spent an hour with the mechanic discussing the car and just shooting the breeze. Heaven for me. Also, the bill was at low end of the estimate. Additionally, they checked out the bottom of the car, and the torque on exposed bolts, related or not to the job. So here is the no BS review PROs 1. Professional and competent 2. Chris and his team are absolute best. I cannot believe have not reviewed his Yelp page yet. He is always fast and very helpful, and I love that they are just as meticulous as I am about my cars. It helps that the guys at GAS are true BMW enthusiasts so they really care about your car and enjoy what they do.
