I brought my Audi Q7 to Tomas Sport Tuning after a DIY transmission service because the transmission pan was slightly bent and leaking. They charged me to replace the transmission filter, gasket, and fluid, and stated on the invoice that the transmission service was completed and the pan was sealed. Immediately after picking up the car, it started shifting harshly and sometimes got stuck in 6th gear. Tomas Sport Tuning told me to take it to the dealer for diagnosis. A dealer-certified shop then told me I might need a new transmission. Instead of replacing the transmission, I removed the transmission myself and discovered that the transmission filter O-ring had never been installed. After correcting that issue, the transmission problems were resolved. I requested a refund and filed a complaint with the Bureau of Automotive Repair so the incident would be documented. Based on my experience, I would not trust this shop with transmission work. read more

I bought an engine from these people. They told me it ran and was fine. I asked them about the history of the engine and if it had any issues. They failed to disclose that it had suffered damage from a timing belt tensioner failing and the cam chain guide broke apart. I drained the oil and found metal flake in it. Then I pulled the connecting rod cap and found a heavily damaged bearing. These people are sloppy. Their quality control is unacceptable. They will lie to you to make a buck. If you have a Volkswagen or Audi beware. If they're willing to do this to me, they'll do it to you. Shops like this are the reason mechanics get a bad rap for being crooks. Take your car somewhere else. They are not to be trusted. read more

Fast, friendly, expert. Needed Tire Rack tires installed on my 2000 Audi TT. I expected to be sitting in their waiting lounge for 90 minutes (my estimate not theirs). That would have been fine, it was clean, comfortable, and had need VW / Audi displays, not too far from cafes. Ken was super friendly all the way through, as were the other mechanics I chatted with. Critical: Professionalism, Punctuality, Quality, Value At first, I thought these guys were top-notch from family recommendations. However, when they did repair work on my Subaru outback to replace the water pump, timing chain, radiator, and head gaskets. They charged me back double from what I would have paid at the shop my car was being serviced at in Portland for labor and parts and did not do all the work I asked them do perform. When I picked up my car a week later. It over heater on the way back to Oregon that evening. That caused me to have additional repairs to resolve the issues they did not resolve and caused by it overheating. They did not accept reasonable for my car overheating, nor did Tim discount the $200 oil change or $700 break job when I came back into the shop a month later. That was my last visit. I knew I was being ripped off then. 90,000 miles later, it's time to do all that work again. Come to find out they left broken bolts in my head which could ruined my motor. There was packing tape in my water pump. Matt the Subaru guy at the shop pretty much did everything wrong. Luckily for me, it only cracked my head and added a few hours of labor to my current bill... Called the shop two days ago to speak with the owner Tim. It has been over a week. Still have not gotten a call back. I had a few things -- oil change but also an A/C problem and a code. He looked up the code and I needed an O2 sensor, and also noticed my air filters were super dirty. All maintenance and upgrades to my 24v VR6 GTI have been done by TST and I've had no serious issues after 100K miles and 88K miles on the VF charger. Don't let the idea of a tuner shop scare people who just want general maintenence. It's a great place for everyone. I come all the way from San Leandro just to take my car to this shop when I need to. I rather take it when I don't need to because it means I can spend money on fun perfomance items for my car and be sure it gets installed right the first time. Also, I like the fact that Tim will tell you if your wasting your money and will offer great advice. I've been coming ever since they opened. On paper, the labor may be a bit high for some?, but it all works out because I don't get charged for BS things like other places. Oh, BTW one reason I bring my car here is also the fact that I'm tired of people screwing up my car especially the dealers. I even order my tires from Tire Rack, have them dropped shipped to the shop and have them install them. Because Wheel Works screwed up my alignment in the past. Another nice thing. Disclaimer - I haven't had work done here. But read on. My sister had a 2007 Passat that the local mechanic diagnosed with a bad AC compressor. I told her to get an estimate from a "real VW mechanic" and sent her here, based on their reputation on the VW forums. I saw the estimate they gave her - close to $3000. This was enough to convince her to sell the car and go lease a new VW. So why the 5 stars? Because they, in incredible detail, pinpointed every little possible problem going on with that car, including the unknown-to-me at the time cam lifter problem. My daughter's Audi A3 just had that problem, and had I known about it and proactively replaced the lifter, I wouldn't now be replacing a camshaft and high pressure fuel pump. So - these guys know their stuff. It may not be cheap, but they've got skills. read more

Tim & Matt built my mk4 r32 into an all motor monster. They are one of the only UM dealers on the west coast and have a 20 plus year relationship with Techtonic Tuning. Every tech is an enthusiast, so they don't miss small things, and they have been around longer than ANY current tuner in the Bay. When they did my timing chains, they basically replaced all the stuff that was gonna break in the next few years. My 2004 is super reliable because of them. They're not cheap, but they are the best around, fast, honest, and they have a 1 year warranty on all work. Ken, up front, is just as knowledgeable as any mechanic. Basically if you know about these guys, you don't need to be told. The owner/mechanic has had cars in VW performance a few times. At first, you think, OK, the place got 5 star and is a specialty for Volkswagon. Sounds good if you need a quick repair/service for your VW, right? Well, I just found out this place is A HORRIBLE RIP OFF. I had a flat tire. Pumped it up with a bike pump, drove it down to the shop. Asked them for an oil change and to put the spare on where the flat was. Was charged well over $100 for an oil change and for them to PUT A SPARE TIRE ON TO WHERE THE FLAT WAS. The apparent rate is $130/hour of labor. WOW. That is pushing CEO salary type-levels. For any substantial repairs, you might just buy a new car instead of paying what they'll charge. On top of that, they did not even attempt to fix/repair the flat tire that needed to be taken off. No comment about "oh, that is/is not a fixable tire." The information that would be highly useful, they seemed to overlook. They DID mention that all my brake lines were damaged and "need to be fully replaced". HA HA, I'm not falling for that crap. Later, I went to a different shop on San Pablo, they fixed the tire and put on the tire to where the spare was, in less than ten minutes, for a whopping charge of $10. Should have just went here in the first place. read more

Auto repair places are like salons, they all have high yelp ratings because everyone has their guy that they stick with and they assume they're getting the best service/deal/treatment... It's ok, I did too. I've been around the block trying out different auto places for my VW Jetta. Before Tomas, I thought XYZ was the best, and although they're 'aite, they can't compare to Tomas...So, to reiterate, unless you're going here you're not getting the best service/treatment/deal. I love them because: 1. I am absolutely 100% sure that they are honest. And I have NEVER been able to say that about any mechanic I've ever been to. 2. They don't make me wait long!!! yaaaayyy!!! I hate waiting! 3. They go above and beyond the call of duty. Outstanding customer service. When I asked for an oil change they automatically knew that my car burns oil without me having to tell them and ask for a good synthetic oil. They also rotated my tires and fixed on of my license plates lights for free. AND on top of that the mechanic (so sorry I didn't get his name) noticed that my mirror was broken and gave me a free one that had been hanging around the shop. All for $65. Yup I'll be back. (I have more examples if you still need convincing) 4. Their prices are VERY fair and reasonable This place is the sole reason I'd consider getting another VW. Recently became first time owner of a VW 08 EOS since this is my first new/used car I wanted to make sure everything was good as I want to keep it running good forever. I bought my car and took in to Tomas a couple of days later. The guys at Tomas looked everything over for me and everything in my car appeared standard but they did inform me that there was a part that appeared to be slightly worn (cam follower) I had it replaced apparently this part becomes worn over time in all EOS. They went enough to show me the part and show me the part that they would be putting in. I am very grateful for this because I rather have this replaced now as it was only slightly worn than to have a bigger problem with it in the future. My car only gets serviced at Tomas and I will only take it to Tomas. They have the best service ken is always very nice, honest and very informative you know they know what they are talking about and as a women this is what you want because you know you will get great service, they are very honest and you will not get ripped off which one thing I cannot say about any other mechanic shop I've been too. Recently did coilovers and had my car flashed! Big move for someone that doesn't know to much about cars but I am confident in any service recommend and done at Tomas and guess what? I love it you can defiantly feel the difference my car drives so much better and it responds quicker! I recently moved here to the Bay area from NYC and was so nervous as finding a good & honest mechanic can be a PIA. Most mechanics on the East coast I found were all about making that initial $ but never though of the long term or the power of word of mouth. Well I have found my promise land of mechanics! I have had anything from simple tune ups to suspension maintenance done. Their hearts lie in VW so I thought since Audi was part of the VAG (Volkswagen Audi Group) why not. I couldnt be more pleased. Honest, fast, and quality work. Pricing has always been fair and competetive. I recently purchased an 2004 BMW 3 series and low and behold, Tim use to work on BMW's. The only work I have had TOMAS do on this car was mount my autocross tires onto it. I will be going back soon to install a front sway bar and tweak my alignment. I was fortunate to experience the Tomas treatment a few days ago. I was in search of a specific size tyre and came across a set of Vredestein tyres on Craigslist. I emailed the seller and got a response the very next morning in a cheerful tone. It turned out it was at Tomas Sport Tuning. A price was negotiated and they also offered to install the tyres. I informed them that these were new, and very rare wheels - they assured me they would treat them right. We agreed to a time and an appointment was set. I think I spoke to Richard... but I might be wrong and apologize. Now, I have to mention that I drive a BMW and Tomas is primarily a VW and AUDI shop. I wasn't sure how this would all work out. I got to the shop on 4th and was immediately at ease. It likes one big family there and everyone has a sip of happy juice before work. Everyone was warm and friendly and not just to customer - but to each other. You could see it was a team that enjoyed working with each other. It was one of those rare times I did not hesitate to hand my keys off for someone else to drive my car into the shop - and with no fear. I checked out the tires and they were as described. Literally Brand New! And apparently, these are great tires too. Tim did the installation of the tires. I have to talked about this part. As soon as he looked my wheels, he commented on how nice they were and how he would need to be careful while installing the tires. I usually take comments like this with a pinch of salt as a lot of people "just say" that kind of stuff. Not Tim! Oh no man. He places rags on the tire machine so the inside of the wheels are not scratched - let alone the face of the wheels. And then he removes the old tire one inch at a time so as not to scar the lip of the wheel. When it came time to balance, he spent at least ten minutes on each wheel distributing the weights for optimum balance. I was so used to going to tire shops where they just roll the wheel,slap on some weights and send you on your merry way. Not here mate! During this whole process, Tim did not only clean the old spot where the weights were and the residue, he cleaned the whole inside of each wheel. Like WOW! To say I was impressed with their work would be an understatement. And to boot..... they are NOT a tire shop. Amazing! I wasn't sure how well the balancing would work. As anyone who drives a BMW knows, they can be very finicky cars when it comes to suspension and wheels. My car rode as smooth as glass. Thank You Tim! Thank You Guys! I kinda wish I had a VW or AUDI so I had a reason to go back to Tomas Sport Tuning. Who knows, I just might one day. Even if I don't go back there for work, I won't hesitate a second to recommended anyone to go there and get the cars repaired or worked on. These guys are A++++++++ Thank You! read more

These guys are super awesome, levelheaded, honest, quick and reasonably priced. Who knew that such a combination could exist in an auto shop?! I had taken my VW to the dealership because my emergency brake was slipping. They estimated replacing both e-brake cables at $400 (parts & labor). They also told me that parts had to be special ordered and wouldn't be in for 3-4 days. I thought this was a bit overpriced and so I decided to follow up on a friend's recommendation that I give these guys a try. I called them and got an estimate within 2 minutes, and an appointment in 3! When I showed up for my appointment two days later, the parts were there and ready, they got my car fixed up in under an hour, and made it all happen for only $180. They were relaxed, had a great sense of humor, and treated me with warmth and respect. I'm never taking my car anywhere else if I can help it. :) read more
