These guys are super awesome, levelheaded, honest, quick and reasonably priced. Who knew that such a combination could exist in an auto shop?! I had taken my VW to the dealership because my emergency brake was slipping. They estimated replacing both e-brake cables at $400 (parts & labor). They also told me that parts had to be special ordered and wouldn't be in for 3-4 days. I thought this was a bit overpriced and so I decided to follow up on a friend's recommendation that I give these guys a try. I called them and got an estimate within 2 minutes, and an appointment in 3! When I showed up for my appointment two days later, the parts were there and ready, they got my car fixed up in under an hour, and made it all happen for only $180. They were relaxed, had a great sense of humor, and treated me with warmth and respect. I'm never taking my car anywhere else if I can help it. :) read more

This is not your everyday, average car shop. TST specializes in VW's and Audi's, but I know that they can work on any kind of car. They can do anything: from performing regular maintenance, to building your dream performance car. Ok...ok....I don't want to sound like a commercial, so I will share my personal experience with TST. I recently had my timing chains rebuilt by Tomas as well as other performance/maintainance parts installed. This was a two day job; it was a big job. As always, when I drop of my car, I know that they will work on my car as if it was their own. At first glance, the labor rate at TST appears to be pricey, but they do not bill hours the same as other shops. I feel like I get the most for my money when I go here! The most important factor in choosing a shop is trust, and they have exceeded my expectations. In fact, there have been faulty/broken parts that have been discovered while they were working on my car, and they always notified me and, in certain situations, fixed the problem as part of the original job. The shop is moving to Berkeley in December so they will no longer be in my backyard, but I will continue to take my car here. I brought my mom's 2003 New Beetle in for a brake fluid flush, coolant flush, oil change, & general overall inspection. My mom doesn't drive much, as she only has 30k miles on her car, but dealership prices keep going up and $500+ for the aforementioned maintenance work cannot be justified on an 11 year old car. Calling for an appointment took 2 voicemail attempts, but by the end of the week my appointment was scheduled. The shop was clean, Ken was very courteous and attentive to my needs. The work was completed in good order, on time, at a fair price that was way less than any dealership quoted me, and without any issues. In 2014,Tomas Sport Tuning first showed me how capable they were when they told me NOT to buy an R32 that they had done a presale inspection on for me, and THEN pointed me toward a seller they knew who had announced his intention to sell his all-but-new 2004 R32 for only a few thou more. They have since been the only resource to whom I'll take the car for ANY service: oil change, new tire installation and balance, fault message corrections, all-fluids swaps, etc. They had done everything that the previous owner wanted, and his choices were ALL to the point. TT cams, coil-overs, rear interior brace, et al. And then Tim suggested that I consider a set of used forged BBS wheels that were in great shape and about a third of the price of retail. I said "yes," and he was SO right. They changed the character of the car in remarkable ways. Unsprung weight reductions can be remarkable. I absolutely love driving this car, whether at Sears Point HOD events, or just pulling onto I-280 on Sixth Street in San Francisco. Going to Tomas for my Passat is like spa day and buying a new oufit all at once. I love it here. Tim's been working on VWs since he was about 16, and you can tell he loves what he does. If you care about your VW, bring it here. Whatever you need, from performance tuning to regular maintenance, they do it all. Recommended: full synthetic oil change with a brand spanking new OEM filter. VWs get excellent care here-- it's great to hear about everyone's new project cars and check out the glossy magazine spreads featuring Tomas cars. My baby's more of a sleeper car (short shifter, 17s, coilovers, exhaust, chip, blowoff valve) and the only cosmetics she has are tint and a racing grill, but the guys here appreciate her all the same and give her TLC. I got my new suspension installed here and also have them do the 60k, 90k work. Although it's a trek, it's so worth it. By the way, their shop is in a gated area so you don't have to worry about your car being left out on the street overnight for longer jobs. read more

Let me begin by saying that I don't know shit about cars other than how to drive them. I was referred to Ken at Tomas by a fellow VW owner, but one who is a little more into the "sportiness" aspect than I am. I was a little nervous about going there at first, being a chick who knows nothing about cars, and has no interest in "tuning." My fears were completely unnecessary, as Ken and his team are purely professional, non-judgemental, and I know they aren't taking advantage of me and my ignorance--partly because of my trustworthy friend's referral, and partly because I can just tell. I thought that I reviewed them earlier...but maybe I didn't save it or something. They're a great company. I own a 1973 Super Beetle. I asked around and was referred to them. The person who referred them spoke highly of them and their honest business practices. I experienced it first hand. After dealing with them the one time that I did, I can honestly say that they're very fair and honest. They took me to the BART station after I dropped my car off and picked me up from the BART station when they were finished with my car. They're very busy and hard to get a hold of. Mad props to Ken though. He's very hard working and really nice. Although they're a great company, good luck with getting a hold of them by phone or e-mail. Your best bet would be to stop by and schedule an appointment if you can. I believe that they're popular because there seem to be more people in Berkeley who own older Beetles then any other place in the Bay Area and there are very few people who still work on them locally. This place is amazing! I found this place for my mom who needed work on her Audi. She had a great experience here. So when it was my turn to get work done on my Audi I did not hesitate about where to go. I called up TST and made an appointment to drop my car off that day. During the whole process I was kept up to date on the repairs being made. They would call if they had any questions or needed my permission to do anything. The people that work here are very professional and nice. They will answer any question you have no matter how simple it is. They are very honest as well, they will only charge you for the work that they do and wont force you to do repairs that may not be necessary right away. When I am not able to do the work or it is out of my ability, this is the only place I will take my car to. I will recommend this place to anybody with a VW or Audi. Great team I brought my 2001 Golf as the motor light was on. They are working with me to see what is the waranty covering, they are taking all the time investing the problem with no investigation fees. Even when they gave me a quote for the catalytic converter they gave me a quote 200 dollars less than another two VW mechanics. They gladly gave me a ride to my work this morning after i left the car. They are always available when you call them. Great customer experience. I will always do business with these folks. I have taken my Golf a couple of times to Tomas for tires and brake fluid change. Tim is an expert mechanic, he's fun to speak with, and he seems to be doing a lot of the work himself. He also very meticulous, which is a plus when you have a brand new car. He was extra careful not to scratch my wheels which is not something you see at your typical tire store, and the price to install the tires was the exact same. A while back I Had a problem with my AC thinking it was the lack of freon or possibly the compressor. Took my GTI to my local dealership and got a quote for 2k plus for parts and labor and they still weren't sure what the problem was. I've been wanting to get my car performances tune for a while now but financial constraints have limited me to just springs and rear sway bar. But I thrive best in cool air and o needed my AC fixed pronto, and at a decent price! I finally brought my car to TST and the staff was top notch. You can tell these guys bleed VW and that it's their passion. They had to keep my car a couple days but gave me updates and price quotes on the fly. 2000 Audi A6,V8 A/T: ZF 5HP-19FLA I think some people pick and choose on what kind of car they want to work on. And I'm ok with that. I do the same thing in my line of work. I know the Audi Automatic Transmission is probably one of the hardest transmissions to work on. Well the guys here at TomasSportsTuning where pretty good. Customer service (Ken) kept me informed on what was going on. With my car. They did some work. But didn't charge me for it. But I think I still owe them . One thing I wish I done is talk to the mechanic. Pretty soon I'm going to get new struts for my Audi and I will definitely have them do the job. About my transmission problem, I took it over to Wholesale Transmission in Berkeley. Again good people. Said it would take 6 weeks to get to my Audi. When I got in the shop, looked around, and saw some of the craziest modified VW's and Audi's I've ever seen, I wondered if I'd gone to the right place for a simple tire swap. My tin box, yes it really is a tin box (1980 Datsun 210) (yes I have the last Datsun on the planet, thanks for pointing that out) was in serious need of a radiator and water pump (still had its orig.) replaced. Tim is the man. Hes got the god hands of tuning. His speciality of VW's and Audi's is supreme. He laid his hand on the top of my 98 GTi's engine (with 95k miles), revved it a little, nodded a few times and tells me that at about every 100k for VR6 engines a plastic guide needs to be replaced. He could feel the timing chain bring loose but not at eminent danger of the guide breaking. He'll tell you straight up what is needed and what should be done and an approximate price of doing so. He doesn't add extra or give you bogus rates. Also if you want any tuner type gear for your VW or Audi he knows the best combinations that work well and aren't slapped together. read more

First off, these are awesome people, and they do a great job. They're really honest and down-to-earth folks and they seem to really know what they're doing. They don't make up fake problems that they then have to fix, like some other places do. Whne you find mechanics like this, you stick with them! I took half a star off because they NEVER answer the phone - like NEVER ever ever. I even got the receptionist Ken's cell number because he admitted they don't answer the phone, but he rarely answers that either. So, when I need work done, I roll on in and hope for a walk-up, but usually I'm told they're too busy and to come back later. If they do have time, they'll make the fix on the spot, which is nice. But it would be even nicer to be able to call and make an appointment so I don't waste time showing up, leaving, and coming back later every single time. My guess is it would help their business as well! The other half a star I took off because their prices for parts are retail and thus high. Yes, you can bring in your own parts, but who wants to go through that? Fix these two issues and this place would be perfect. read more

After getting burned at LaVere's in Concord ($800 later and my engine and epc lights were still on), I turned to Yelp to help me find the best VW repair shop in the bay and Tomas Sport tuning came up. The best way I can describe Tomas Sport Tuning is honest. I called on Wednesday afternoon and they were able to take me the following morning. They had the car ready by the end of the day. TST fixed five of the six engine codes hoping #6 was byproduct of the first 5 (and it did) in an effort to save me money. Unfortunately, the check engine light came back (#6 strikes again) and they had the part ordered, delivered, and replaced in a couple hours. On top of that they didn't even charge me for labor. When I went to pick it up I told them I was headed off to get it smogged. They warmed the car up and cleared all the engine checks so my car would pass. They even referred me to a great smog place where I'd get get their referral discount! These guys are a real class act and TST is the only place I'll be taking my VW. For the first time in over a year, my car has no engine lights and drives great all thanks to TST. read more

These guys are great! Very flexible, fast (usually able to pick up the car the next day), and they always give it to you straight. They will tell you all the things you _should_ fix, but don't pressure you into making any repairs you can't afford or aren't able to leave the car with them for the time it's going to require. Mind you, it's not the cheapest place you can find around here, but I never felt like they were overcharging me. When I first started going there, I even looked up the parts they replaced, and they never charged me above retail. There should be no doubts on how good these fellas are! I've taken my 08 GTI here twice this month, once for routine maintenance and another time for a repair for my coilovers. I have had nothing but a positive experience both visits. First visit, the car was only there for about an hour or less, they offered to take us to a local shopping plaza while we waited (took them up on the offer btw). Did the job right, even gave me their opinion on my noisy suspension. Went home knowing that it was money well spent. Second visit, I had them diagnose my front strut noise. This time, took a second vehicle in case I had to leave the car, but this was not the case. Took the car in, they had the front struts out in about an hour and half, got the call and gave them the okay to do the fix. They had the necessary parts ordered and delivered to the shop. They finished the car that afternoon (would have been much sooner since the parts took a while). Prices were more than fair and knowing the guys doing the work made it worth every penny.
