George's is a first-class steak restaurant. The steaks are cooked good. If you haven't ordered there the steaks are cooked as described, unlike most places that tend to cook them too long. Seafood is good, too. To me, a good seasoned steak, cooked over hickory, doesn't need any steak sauce. George's don't. Thanks to a recommendation from people at work, we found our way to George's Steak Pit for dinner last night. While it is a little of a drive for us, we were very happy with our night out. We had calamari to start, followed by a filet for me and the ribeye butt for him. Mine was cooked perfectly, just a touch more than rare, and practically melted in my mouth. You can tell that they cook over real hickory, and the taste is amazing. As for my poor guy, his steak was a little overcooked, but still tasty. They also make their own dressings here (or, rather, some of their own dressings). We tried the roquefort dressing (fancy blue cheese) and it was fabulous. They have the dressings for sale to go as well, and I was tempted for sure. The service was attentive but not overbearing, and the ambiance was very nice. My two quibbles: the tables are really close together, so the noisy family behind us was a bit of a distraction for him, and I thought that the music was a bit too loud for a nice restaurant like George's. Overall, I thought it was fabulous, and will definitely go back. It's also a place that I would recommend to others and that I will take guests to. read more

Absolutely loved it! I had the filet mignon cooked medium and my boyfriend had the George special ribeye cooked medium well. Both were great but mine was better. The hostess was very friendly & gave good advice on food selection. I liked the topping for the oysters rockefeller but the oysters were tough. The food and service here was excellent! The pricing is average for a nice steakhouse with most steaks priced in the $35 range. We were seated promptly on a Friday night with no reservations. Our waitress, Carrie, was very attentive and friendly. The wine/ liquor selection was varied enough that anyone should be able to find something they like. read more

I'm not a big fan of dim lighting, but the environment is still really nice. This place serves one mean filet mignon. The waiters and waitresses are always on point. I'll never understand why this is the go-to place for steaks in the Shoals when there are places that are just as good and 1/3 or more cheaper. I get suckered into going there once a year for Christmas and have never enjoyed it. The outside is kind of dumpy, the parking lot filled with gravel and potholes making it hard for my wife in heels. It's too crowded. I don't think there is an entree less than $35 on the menu. I don't mind paying that for extraordinary choice steaks and the fixins but the fixins leave much to be desired. My steak was slightly undercooked. I requested medium but it was clearly medium rare. It was delicious, though. The broccoli was way overdone and mushy. The baked potato was small. The fried shrimp my wife ordered was unimaginative. I've had better at Red Lobster. The tables are jammed into each other so much that the server's elbow bumped the back of my head with her elbow twice -- hard -- while she was trying to serve the table behind us. That was infuriating. Craft beer: When I asked what ber was available, the server was completely unhelpful. She informed me that had all the regular items (Coors, Bud, Miller) but when I asked about craft beer selections, she replied: "Oh, we have an amber bock." I ordered that expecting something special: It was Michelob. No draught beer selection at all. Oh, they also have Sam Adams Boston Lager and Blue Moon. That's it! No tasty IPA or pale ale or any beer from our local brewery. The 10oz beer glasses (with a STEM -- beer glasses don't have stems except for some rare exceptions!) are too small to fit a whole beer. What's with that? In any case, a restaurant this "nice" ought to offer at least a minimal craft beer selection and serve from a proper beer glass. Also, wait staff should ask clients if they want to pour their own beer. It's bad enough to pay over $7 for a cheap beer and a too-small glass, but I ought to at least have a proper pour. The waitress didn't know how to pour a beer with proper head. I know that sounds pretentious for non-craft drinkers but this is important for craft beer lovers. I have had excellent service there in the past but last night was very much an exception. The servers generally seem to be professional and know their stuff. Our server (12-09-18, brown hair, had a tattoo on right arm) was somewhere between rude and just "not pleasant." She was clearly in a hurry. We were a party of 4 couples, each with separate checks. I understand "mandatory" gratuity for large single checks. Wait staff often get cheated. But for 4 separate checks? That is rubbish. When it came time to pay, she added 18% gratuity to the "gross" amount fo the check. I normally tip 20 to 30% of the "net" (before taxes) of a check. Since she was not pleasant and didn't keep my wife's water filled, I only tipped her 15% -- about 4 dollars less than what she demanded (and was actually 20% of the "net" amount). I paid cash. Well, she called me on it in front of my friends pointing out that the check was $89, not $85. Rather than making a scene or calling the manager, I paid the thing but I was certainly not happy about it because her service was, at best, average and that is being generous AND I still tipped her 20% of the net. So I'll probably get suckered into visiting again but it will be against my better judgement. read more

This is a Shoals staple. A great old-school steakhouse. I went with a friend without a reservation and even though they were pretty packed they accommodated us. The cocktails were perfect, the steak was perfect, everything else was perfect too. Had a wonderful knowledgeable waiter who steered my friend into a direction that she had not expected to go. Was overnight and looking for a good meal. Holy moly the food was Absolutely FANTASTIC. I ordered the Filet and Fish Combo. The steak had awesome flavor (is definitely cooked over wood fired grill). The bone-in ribeye I ate on 6/02/11 was among the best steaks I have eaten in a while. It had a nice hickory flavor that does not overpower the steak. I skipped desert, regrettably, and everyone else at my table enjoyed theirs. The wine list looked fine, but no craft beers were offered tonight. Otherwise--great! I've eaten at George's many times over the past 30 years and always experienced great food their. However my last visit was definitely below all previous visits. It was not bad. It was pretty good....but not to the level of George's of past experiences. I've always gotten the oysters Rockefeller and has always been consistent over the year. This time it came with a thick layer of cheese covering the oysters and the entire plate. The oysters have always been of good size. This time they were so small their were multiple little oysters in each cavern in the oyster plate. Don't think I even tasted any bits of bacon or spinach like in the past. It was nothing like all previous visits. In fact - if I get it again and it is like this time.... I will not get it again. It was very below par. I got the fillet and my steak was good, I would not say it was of the same quality as in past visits and it seems 20% smaller than all previous fillets I have gotten there. Salad was very good. For such a historically consistent steak house.....this was a surprise. Like I said above it was good....but totally not up to the bar George's has been over the years. I sure hope they are not trying to squeeze more profits out of the food....because this place is not cheap. But I had always felt the quality justified the price in the past. Now, I'm beginning to question that. Will make up my mind for sure on my next visit. read more

Georges is one of a few locally owned Steakhouse that has been in the same family for it's many years of operation. Their hickory smoked steaks are cooked over an open grill and have a most marvelous taste one of the best steaks, if not the best, found in the Florence, Muscle Shoals, Sheffield area. Their Seafood is also excellent with shrimp cooked fried and butterflied. Their French Onion soup is also a treat to try. I've never had a bad meal here and it's always on my list when I get ready for a good steak. read more
